Estabilidade das vitaminas antioxidantes em amostras de pólen apícola / Stability of antioxidants vitamins in bee pollen sample

Illana Louise Pereira de Melo 18 September 2008 (has links)
Bee pollen contains high percentages of nutrients and it can be used as a nutritional supplement for human feeding. The aim of this work was to evaluate the stability the antioxidant vitamins (vitamin C, E and &#946;-carotene) in bee pollen during one year of storage. Six batches of fresh and dried bee pollen pellets were acquired in 2007 March and April from bee products warehouses. The three vitamins were quantified and then stored under three forms in packages supplied by the producer: in room temperature, in room temperature protected from light and frozen. Vitamin C was quantified by potentiometric titration. The open column chromatography was used for &#946;-carotene analyses in the zero time and the high performance liquid chromatography after 6 and 12 months storage. This last one was used for the vitamin E analyses. The centesimal composition and botanical characterization of the bee pollen were obtained. Vitamin content in fresh samples varied between 14&#177;0.25 and 119&#177;1.96&#181;g/g for vitamin C; 19.43&#177;1.70 and 45.00&#177;3.61&#181;g/g for vitamin E and 3.77&#177;0.10 and 99.27&#177;2.45&#181;g/g for &#946;-carotene. After the drying process a significant alteration 67.1 % for more in the vitamin C (p<0.05), a losses of 18.7% for vitamin E and 15.6% for &#946;-carotene were observed. The provitamin A value was between 0.26 and 6.48&#181;g/g. The proximal composition of the samples studied presented results which were ali accordance to the specifications established for the Brazilian regulation (Normative Instruction N° 3, 19/01/2001). A great variability of the pollen types was found in the samples and some of them were strongly correlated with the vitamin C (Myrtaceae), &#946;-carotene (Arecaceae, Cecropia and Fabaceae) and lipids (Arecaceae and Fabaceae). Other ones were negatively correlated, such as Mimosa caesalpineafolia and Poaceae types with &#946;-carotene, Arecaceae type with proteins and Mimosa caesalpineafolia type with lipids. Storage in freezer was more efficient to keep the vitamins and the losses at room temperature storage when exposed to light and in the dark were similar. Vitamin E was more preserved during the storage when compared to vitamin C and &#946;-carotene. However, only vitamin C presented significant statistical losses (p<0.05) in ali of the studied conditions when compared to its initial content.

Feature-based Mini Unmanned Air Vehicle Video Euclidean Stabilization with Local Mosaics

Gerhardt, Damon Dyck 01 February 2007 (has links) (PDF)
Video acquired using a camera mounted on a mini Unmanned Air Vehicle (mUAV) may be very helpful in Wilderness Search and Rescue and many other applications but is commonly plagued with limited spatial and temporal field of views, distractive jittery motions, disorienting rotations, and noisy and distorted images. These problems collectively make it very difficult for human viewers to identify objects of interest as well as infer correct orientations throughout the video. In order to expand the temporal and spatial field of view, stabilize, and better orient users of noisy and distorted mUAV video, a method is proposed of estimating in software and in real time the relative motions of each frame to the next by tracking a small subset of features within each frame to the next. Using these relative motions, a local Euclidean mosaic of the video can be created and a curve can be fit to the video's accumulative motion path to stabilize the presentations of both the video and the local Euclidean mosaic. The increase in users' abilities to perform common search-and-rescue tasks of identifying objects of interest throughout the stabilized and locally mosaiced mUAV video is then evaluated. Finally, a discussion of remaining limitations is presented along with some possibilities for future work.

In situ remediation of Pb/Zn contaminated materials: field- and molecular-scale investigations

Baker, Lucas R. January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Agronomy / Gary M. Pierzynski / The bioavailability of Pb and Zn is linked to the solubility of solid phases and other soil chemical characteristics, which is associated with their environmental risk, suggesting that in situ stabilization of these elements can be accomplished by influencing their chemistry. However, more research is needed to investigate the effectiveness of different soil amendments on reducing Pb and Zn bioavailability. A lab study was conducted to evaluate the effects of five different P amendments and time on Pb/Zn speciation in a contaminated soil using synchrotron-based techniques, while a field investigation studied the effects of composted beef manure on plant biomass production and the influence on microbial function, size, and community shifts. In the lab study, the Pb-phosphate mineral plumbogummite was found as an intermediate phase of pyromorphite formation, which has not been documented until now. Additionally, all fluid and granular P sources were able to induce Pb-phosphate formation, but fluid phosphoric acid (PA) was the most effective with time and distance from the treatment. However, acidity from PA increased the prescence of soluble Zn species, which can have negative environmental consequences. Granular phosphate rock (PR) and triple super phosphate (TSP) reacted to generate both Pb- and Zn-phosphates, with TSP being more effective at greater distances than PR. In the field study, compost additions of 269 Mg ha[superscript]1 significantly decreased bioavailable Zn, while increasing estimated available water, plant nutrients, and plant biomass as compared to a contaminated control and low addition of compost (45 Mg ha[superscript]1) over three years. Additionally, compost additions of 269 Mg ha[superscript]1 significantly increased microbial enzyme activities, nitrification, and microbial biomass over the contaminated control through the duration of the study. Increases in microbial activity and biomass are related to increases in total C, available water, and extractable P, while negative relationships were found with electrical conductivity and with bioavailable Zn. The addition of lime or lime plus bentonite with compost did not further reduce metal availability, increase plant biomass, or improve the size or function of microbial communities. High compost additions caused a slight shift in microbial community structure according to phospholipids fatty acid analysis. Increases in the mole percents of both Gram-positive (Gm[superscript]+) and Gram negative (Gm[superscript]-) bacteria were found depending on site. Microbial biomass of Gm[superscript]+, Gm[superscript]-, and fungi were also increased by high compost additions. Results indicate that large additions of compost are needed to increase microbial biomass, improve microbial activity, and re-establish a healthy vegetative community. This study proposes that organic matter and P amendments can be used to stabilize and reduce the bioavailability of heavy metals in soils and mine waste materials, but must be managed carefully and intelligently.

The impact of visually demanding near work on neck/shoulder discomfort and trapezius muscle activity : Laboratory studies

Zetterberg, Camilla January 2016 (has links)
Introduction: Musculoskeletal discomfort in the neck and shoulders is common among workers performing visually demanding near work, e.g., on a computer screen, and sustained low-level muscle activity during such work can lead to work-related pain. The relationships between visual demands and muscle activity and discomfort in the neck/shoulder region are at present unclear. Aim: The aims of this thesis were to determine whether neck/shoulder discomfort and trapezius muscle activity increases during visually demanding experimental near work, and to investigate whether eye-lens accommodation is a mediating mechanism behind increased trapezius muscle activity. Methods: The four papers included are based on two experiments with different visually demanding near work tasks (duration 5 and 7 min). Trial lenses of different diopters were used to manipulate the visual demands (i.e., induce more or less accommodation) and thereby create different viewing conditions. Monocular viewing, which does not require active convergence, was used to examine the isolated effect of accommodation. Eye-lens accommodation and trapezius muscle activity were measured continuously during the visual tasks, and in one experiment the participants rated their eye and neck/shoulder discomfort at baseline and after each visual task. Results: Neck/shoulder discomfort and trapezius muscle activity increased during the visually demanding near work and participants experiencing a greater increase in eye discomfort (compared with baseline) also developed more neck/shoulder discomfort with time. There were no significant differences in muscle activity among the viewing conditions, and no effect of isolated accommodation response within the monocular viewing conditions. Conclusion: These findings indicate that accommodation per se is unlikely to mediate trapezius muscle activity. Instead, the increase in trapezius muscle activity observed here may be due to a combination of high visual attention and enhanced requirement for eye-neck (head) stabilisation. Since these results suggest that neck/shoulder discomfort may aggravate with time when the visual demands are high, it is important to provide good visual conditions in connection with visually demanding occupations.

Laboratory accelerated curing protocol for bitumen stabilized materials

Moloto, Percy Kgothatso 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng (Civil Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The research conducted in this study forms part of the Phase II process of the Bitumen Stabilized Materials (BSMs) Guideline improvement initiative. The initiative aims to address areas of concern in the cold mix design procedures for BSMs. Current road rehabilitation using the bitumen stabilization process requires testing of representative specimens as means to evaluate pavement performance over time. In order to adequately acquire specimens representative of field conditions, it is necessary to condition the materials in a process called curing. Although curing procedures have been standard in many countries on different continents, the protocols are varied and an acceptable procedure is currently not available. In order to develop an acceptable curing protocol for BSMs, both field and laboratory environments were investigated. Considering that curing takes time in the field, production of representative samples intended for laboratory testing must undergo accelerated curing in the laboratory. Given the complexities involved in achieving close correlations between field and laboratory environments, the research strived to reconcile field and laboratory material behaviour. In particular, the main objective of the research was to unify the curing protocol for BSMs, with the standardization of the curing protocol being top priority. In this study, laboratory results have confirmed that the different natures of curing mechanisms inherent in a BSM-foam and BSM-emulsion contribute to irreconcilable material behaviour(s). Results have confirmed that curing of BSM-foam is largely a function of water repulsion, with the addition of active filler dominating material performance almost immediately. Unlike BSM-foam, curing of BSM-emulsion is both a function of the breaking of emulsion during the initial phase and the gradual release of moisture with time. In this instance, BSM-emulsion material performance resembled active filler influences past the breaking of the emulsion cycle. Consequently, given the observed differences regarding material behaviour(s), the unification of the curing protocol for BSMs has not been successful. In terms of accommodation of active filler in the final curing protocol for BSMs, findings in this research have revealed that active filler’s tendency to absorb moisture in the initial stages requires longer curing time to help extract the absorbed moisture during the curing process. Although the use of active filler has an impact on curing, its inclusion in a BSM does not justify its extension in the curing time as cementation is not one of the desired properties of these materials. BSMs are primarily desirable for their flexibility in pavement structures. For this reason, active filler was omitted in the final curing protocol due to reasons of simplifying the mix design process. In conclusion, different curing protocols were tested and developed to help produce reconcilable material behaviour in both the field and laboratory environments. Through the reconciliation of key material properties such as the resilient modulus, long term equilibrium moisture conditions and shear parameters, an acceptable standardized curing protocol for BSM-foam and BSMemulsion intended for application in industrial laboratories across South Africa was successfully developed.

Kemisk stabilisering av gruvavfall från Ljusnarsbergsfältet med mesakalk och avloppsslam / Chemical stabilization of mine waste with sewage sludge and calcium carbonate residues

Höckert, Linda January 2007 (has links)
<p>Mine waste from Ljusnarsbergsfältet in Kopparberg, Sweden, is considered to constitute a great risk for human health and the surrounding environment. Some of the waste rock consists of sulphide minerals. When sulphide minerals come into contact with dissolved oxygen and precipitation, oxidation may occur resulting in acid mine drainage (AMD) and the release of heavy metals. The purpose of this study has been to characterise the waste material and try to chemically stabilize the waste rock with a mixture of sewage sludge and calcium carbonate. The drawback of using organic matter is the risk that dissolved organic matter can act as a complexing agent for heavy metals and in this way increase their mobility. An additional study to examine this risk has therefore also been performed.</p><p>The project started with a pilot study in order to identify the material fraction that was suitable for the experiment. When suitable material had been chosen, a column test was carried out for the purpose of studying the slurry’s influence on the mobility of metals along with the production of acidity. To clarify the organic material’s potential for complexation a pH-stat batch test was used. Drainage water samples, from the columns, were regularly taken during the experiment. These samples were analysed for pH, electrical conductivity, alkalinity, redox potential, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), sulphate and leaching metals. The effluent from the pH-stat-test were only analysed on a few occasions and only for metal content and change in DOC concentration.</p><p>The results from the laboratory experiments showed that the waste rock from Ljusnarsberg easily leached large amounts of metals. The stabilization of the waste rock succeeded in maintaining a near neutral pH in the rock waste leachate, compared to a pH 3 leachate from untreated rock waste The average concentration of copper and zinc in the leachate from untreated waste rock exceeded 100 and 1000 mg/l respectively, while these metals were detected at concentrations around 0.1 and 1 mg/l, respectively, in the leachate from the treated wastes. Examined metals had concentrations between 40 to 4000 times lower in the leachate from treated waste rock, which implies that the stabilisation with reactive amendments succeeded. The long term effects are, however, not determined. The added sludge contributed to immobilise metals at neutral pH despite a small increase in DOC concentration. The problem with adding sludge is that if pH decreases with time there is a risk of increased metal leaching.</p> / <p>Gruvavfallet från Ljusnarsbergsfältet i Kopparberg anses utgöra en stor risk för människors hälsa och den omgivande miljön.

Arsenic stabilization in step-wise amended soil / Pakopinė arseno stabilizacija užterštame dirvožemyje

Vaičikauskaitė, Alfreda 01 June 2011 (has links)
This master thesis was performed in order to investigate arsenic stabilization in step-wise amended soil. Object of the work - soil which taken from the former wood impregnation industrial site in Forsmo, Sweden. It is contaminated with chromate-zinc-arsenate (CZA). Method of the work - three different amendments were used: zerovalent iron (Fe), fly-ash (FA) and peat (P). The test was performed in three weeks. During the first week, four mixtures (with each single additive and with all together) and blank soil was observed. During the second and third weeks test was performed step-wise adding amendments to soil+Fe mixture. Moisture was kept constant all the time. After each week extractions were made and later investigated by doing electrical conductivity, redox potential and pH tests. For elemental composition ICP-OES analysis was performed. The results of the work - the best result to stabilize arsenic were achieved by adding single iron. Stabilisation using iron, fly-ashes and peat elevated As leaching compared to non-amended soil. Step-wise amendment did not have a significant difference from single amelioration neither to arsenic, nor to other heavy metals investigated.
