Adding science to the mix of business and pleasure: an exploratory study of positive psychology interventions with teachers accessing employee assistance counsellingReinsch, Candace C. 10 January 2013 (has links)
This research project explores whether the delivery of positive psychology interventions in the workplace through an employee assistance program (EAP) can improve employees’ authentic happiness/flourishing as well as decrease symptoms of depression.
A small convenience sample of 13 Manitoba public school educators accessing employee assistance were recruited for a quasi-experimental research design. Nine participants were randomly assigned to the experimental group and the remaining participants assigned to the control. Experimental group members participated in a six session psychoeducational, experiential, and process-oriented positive psychotherapy group that met once a week over six weeks.
Experimental group participants’ scores on the authentic happiness/flourishing measure increased by a statistically significant 9% and depression scores decreased by a statistically significant 45% from pre-intervention to one month post-intervention. The study’s findings therefore provide promising confirmation that positive psychology interventions delivered through EAPs can make a meaningful difference as both secondary prevention and primary enhancement strategies in the workplace.

Die doel van die navorsingstudie is om die voorkoms en hantering van werksres by maatskaplike werkers in die Paarl-omgewing te ondersoek ten einde aanbevelings aan die bestuur van welsynsorganisasies te maak met die oog op die bevordering van effektiewe stresbestuur by maatskaplike werkers. Elf welsynsorganisasies in die Paarl-omgewing is in die ondersoek betrek en twintig maatskaplike werkers het aan die ondersoek deelgeneem. Na aanleiding van die empiriese ondersoek is daar tot die gevolgtrekking gekom dat maatskaplike werkers in die Paarl-omgewing wel werkstres ervaar en dat die meerderheid welsynsorganisasies in die Paarl-omgewing nie oor programme vir streshantering vir hul maatskaplike werkers beskik nie. Daar word onder meer aanbeveel dat beide die maatskaplike werker en die bestuur van die welsynsorganisasie mede-verantwoordelikheid moet neem vir die maatskaplike werker se effektiewe stresbestuur deur middel van individuele- en organisatoriese streshanteringstrategieë.
SUMMARY
The purpose of this research study is to investigate the occurrence and management of work stress by social workers in the Paarl-vicinity in order to make recommendations to the management of welfare organisations regarding the promotion of effective stress management of social workers. Eleven welfare organisations in the Paarl-vicinity were involved in the investigation while twenty social workers participated in the investigation. With reference to the empirical study, it was concluded that social workers in the Paarl-vicinity do experience work stress and that the majority of the welfare organisations in the Paarl-vicinity do not have programmes for stress management available for their social workers. Based on these conclusions it was recommended that both the social worker and the organisations must take co-responsibility for the social workers effective stress management by utilizing individual- and organisational stress management strategies. / Social work / M.Diac.

Tension between school principals and school governing bodies arises despite a clear demarcation in the South African Schools Act 84 of 1996 of the powers and responsibilities of school governing bodies.
The aim of this study was to devise tension management strategies that can be used to manage tension between the principal and school governing body in three selected schools in Nkomazi West Circuit. A qualitative research approach was followed, and a multiple case study research design was employed. Multiple data-collection methods, namely, a literature study, in-depth interviews, qualitative questionnaires, a focus group discussion and observations, were employed, to ensure validity of the data through triangulation. The findings of the study revealed that the main sources of tension are the overlapping roles of governance and management, role uncertainty and blurring of responsibilities and the perceived high “illiteracy” rate among parent governors. Tension management strategies, tailor-made to each school, were developed. Work-related teacher stress is indeed a major problem in schools. The main aim of this study was to investigate the role of the Head of Department in alleviating work-related teacher stress among primary schools in the Temba Circuit. The research problem was investigated by means of a literature study and an empirical investigation. The literature study identified the main causes of teacher related stress. A qualitative inquiry using semi-structured focus group interviews with teachers and semi-structured individual interviews with Heads of Department were conducted in order to find answers to the research questions. It was found that the main sources of teacher stress could be grouped into four main categories, namely, interpersonal, organisational, professional and personal stressors. Guidelines to be considered by Heads of Department to alleviate the stress that teachers under their auspices are encountering were developed on the basis of these four categories of teacher stressors. / Further Teacher Education / M. Educator stress is a major problem worldwide. This study focuses on the role of the principal in the secondary school in providing support and assisting educators manage work-related stress, with particular reference to schools in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. The problem was investigated by means of a literature study and empirical investigation. The literature identified perspectives on educators' stress, the stress process of the educator and the principal, causes of work-related stress in educators and coping strategies. Furthermore, principals' leadership styles, theories of motivation and causes of principals' stress were discussed. A qualitative inquiry using focus group interviews was undertaken with a small sample of secondary school educators selected by purposeful sampling. Findings suggested that educator stress was caused by a lack of learner discipline; deterioration in educational standards; workload; policy changes; promotion procedures and the principal's leadership style. Stress, burnout and salutogenic functioning amongst community service doctors in Kwazulu-Natal hospitalsDhaniram, Nirasha 28 February 2003 (has links)
This research worked toward a general aim of analysing the role of salutogenic functioning as moderator variable in coping and noncoping. A sample of forty-one community service doctors (N = 41) employed in KwaZulu-Natal hospitals was obtained.
According to the literature, salutogenic properties are expected to act as generalised resistance resources. Based on this assertion, it was assumed that:
degree of salutogenic functioning = degree of coping = degree of stress and burnout.
The results demonstrated high levels of stress and depersonalisation burnout. Salutogenic functioning tended to be low, especially for sense of coherence. The results indicated, no significant relationship between stress/burnout and salutogenic functioning. Salutogenic functioning was unable to differentiate between copers and noncopers.
These results contradicted the literature assertion that high scores on salutogenic functioning correlate with low scores on stress/burnout. evangelischer Gemeindepfarrer der Region Karlsruhe (Deutschland). Zuerst werden an
Hand der Literatur Möglichkeiten der Stressbewältigung in Forschung und Beratung sowie
im Pfarrberuf reflektiert. Es folgt die Erfassung der empirischen Situation mit Hilfe teilstrukturierter
Interviews und deren Bewertung in Anlehnung an Mayrings Qualitativer Inhaltsanalyse.
Abschließend werden aus der theoretischen Reflexion und der empirischen
Forschung konkrete Handlungsempfehlungen abgeleitet.
Im Zentrum der Untersuchung steht die persönliche Praxis der Stressbewältigung
im Rahmen der Predigtvorbereitung und des Predigtvortrages, wobei die Einbindung des
geistlichen Lebens des Pfarrers interessiert. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung geben Anlass,
insgesamt von einer stressreduzierenden Wirkung der Predigtarbeit auszugehen. Die
berufsbedingt meditative Beschäftigung mit dem Predigttext fördert die Spiritualität. In
Kombination mit autodidaktisch erworbenen Stressbewältigungskompetenzen ergibt sich
daraus ein erstaunlich effektives Stressmanagement.
Die Studie ist im Fachbereich der Praktischen Theologie verortet, steht aber interdisziplinär

The importance of stress management is emphasized throughout this study as well as the need to cater stress management programmes to the unique needs of individuals. The possibility of introducing an animal-assisted stress management programme into the work environment is explored by means of a qualitative study in order to test out the feasibility of such an intervention. The positive physical and psychological effects animals have on humans has been extensively researched and reported. Eleven participants were randomly chosen from within the same department by means of purposive sampling. Semi-structured interviews were held with each participant and thematic analysis was used to analyse the transcribed interviews. Various themes were identified and explored with the most prominent highlighting the need for privacy, respect and connection. Although animals do have positive effects on some employees, there are individual differences that need to be considered. stress has negative effect on professional nurses ’rendering of patient care. They
should thus be able to manage their stress successfully in order to render quality
nursing care to the customers. The purpose of the study was to identify and describe
factors contributing to stressors among professional nurses, the effects of stressors on
the wellbeing of professional nurses and the management of stress by professional
nurses.
METHOD:
A quantitative, exploratory, descriptive design was utilised. The target population of this
research study comprised of all professional nurses who were at work the day the
researcher visited the sampled hospitals. The questionnaires were used to collect data
from the sampled professional nurses, and descriptive statistic was used to analyse the
data.
RESULTS:
The findings revealed that 45% of the professional nurses experienced pressure of work
without rest, whereas 75% viewed changes at work as challenging and 15% mostly
experienced accidents while on duty. Most of them indicated that they had previously

experienced anxiety and that they did not engage in exercise. The finding further
revealed that EAP is not facilitated in most institutions and that 97.4% of the
professional nurses like to have more knowledge on management of stress. The results
of this study may be useful to the entire population of health professionals, policy
