Investigation of Simultaneous Effects of Surface Roughness, Porosity, and Magnetic Field of Rough Porous Microfin Under a Convective-Radiative Heat Transfer for Improved Microprocessor Cooling of Consumer Electronics

Oguntala, George A., Sobamowo, G., Eya, Nnabuike N., Abd-Alhameed, Raed 30 October 2018 (has links)
Yes / The ever-increasing demand for high-processing electronic systems has unequivocally called for improved microprocessor performance. However, increasing microprocessor performance requires increasing power and on-chip power density, both of which are associated with increased heat dissipation. Electronic cooling using fins have been identified as a reliable cooling approach. However, an investigation into the thermal behaviour of fin would help in the design of miniaturized, effective heatsinks for reliable microprocessor cooling. The aim of this paper is to investigates the simultaneous effects of surface roughness, porosity and magnetic field on the performance of a porous micro-fin under a convective-radiative heat transfer mechanism. The developed thermal model considers variable thermal properties according to linear, exponential and power laws, and are solved using Chebychev spectral collocation method. Parametric studies are carried using the numerical solutions to establish the influences of porosity, surface roughness, and magnetic field on the microfin thermal behaviour. Following the results of the simulation, it is established that the thermal efficiency of the micro-fin is significantly affected by the porosity, magnetic field, geometric ratio, nonlinear thermal conductivity parameter, thermogeometric parameter and the surface roughness of the micro-fin. However, the performance of the micro-fin decreases when it operates only in a convective environment. In addition, we establish that the fin efficiency ratio which is the ratio of the efficiency of the rough fin to the efficiency of the smooth fin is found to be greater than unity when the rough and smooth fins of equal geometrical, physical, thermal and material properties are subjected to the same operating condition. The investigation establishes that improved thermal management of electronic systems would be achieved using rough surface fins with porosity under the influences of the magnetic field. / Supported in part by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund of Federal Government of Nigeria, and the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement H2020-MSCA-ITN- 2016SECRET-722424.

Explorative study for stochastic failure analysis of a roughened bi-material interface: implementation of the size sensitivity based perturbation method

Fukasaku, Kotaro 24 May 2011 (has links)
In our age in which the use of electronic devices is expanding all over the world, their reliability and miniaturization have become very crucial. The thesis is based on the study of one of the most frequent failure mechanisms in semiconductor packages, the delamination of interface or the separation of two bonded materials, in order to improve their adhesion and a fortiori the reliability of microelectronic devices. It focuses on the metal (-oxide) / polymer interfaces because they cover 95% of all existing interfaces. Since several years, research activities at mesoscopic scale (1-10µm) have proved that the more roughened the surface of the interface, i.e., presenting sharp asperities, the better the adhesion between these two materials. Because roughness exhibits extremely complex shapes, it is difficult to find a description that can be used for reliability analysis of interfaces. In order to investigate quantitatively the effect of roughness variation on adhesion properties, studies have been carried out involving analytical fracture mechanics; then numerical studies were conducted with Finite Element Analysis. Both were done in a deterministic way by assuming an ideal profile which is repeated periodically. With the development of statistical and stochastic roughness representation on the one hand, and with the emergence of probabilistic fracture mechanics on the other, the present work adds a stochastic framework to the previous studies. In fact, one of the Stochastic Finite Element Methods, the Perturbation method is chosen for implementation, because it can investigate the effect of the geometric variations on the mechanical response such as displacement field. In addition, it can carry out at once what traditional Finite Element Analysis does with numerous simulations which require changing geometric parameters each time. This method is developed analytically, then numerically by implementing a module in a Finite Element package MSc. Marc/Mentat. In order to get acquainted and to validate the implementation, the Perturbation method is applied analytically and numerically to the 3 point bending test on a beam problem, because the input of the Perturbation method in terms of roughness parameters is still being studied. The capabilities and limitations of the implementation are outlined. Finally, recommendations for using the implementation and for furture work on roughness representation are discussed.

Absolute surface topography measurement with polarisation sensitive coherence scanning interferometry

Palodhi, Kanik January 2013 (has links)
Traditionally, surface topography measurement was in the domain of quality control of engineering parts. With the advancement of manufacturing technology and affordable computational costs, different types of surfaces are produced with varied shapes and surface textures. These pose significant measurement problems, therefore, surface topography research is gaining momentum to achieve a better control of the surface. Coherence scanning interferometry (CSI) is one of the most common techniques used for measurement of surface topography. It is preferred over tactile and other non-contact techniques since it provides fast and accurate measurement with high vertical (~ 1 nm) and lateral (~1 μm) resolutions over larger areas without any damage to the surface. Essentially, CSI is treated as one dimensional (1D) superposition of the light waves from an object and a reference that generates a three dimensional (3D) interferogram. Secondly, despite the advantages, there is no standard configuration of CSI that can provide absolute surface topography measurement of an engineering part with multiple materials. An effective solution to this problem will be particularly useful in the field of semiconductor and bio-related industries where chips and instruments are made of many materials. In this Thesis, first, the CSI technique is analysed in terms of a wider theoretical framework of 3D linear filtering technique which shows the similarities among other seemingly disparate techniques such as confocal and optical coherence tomography. Due consideration to the spectral characteristic of the source and the effect of numerical aperture are given and important parameters such as vertical and lateral resolutions are computed to compare this theory with standard analysis methods. Additionally, it is shown that the 3D fringe pattern can be considered to be a superposition of a reference field and the scattered field from the top foil-like layer on the top the object. The scattered field from this foil object is dependent on the normal Fresnel reflection coefficients. Therefore, it explains the phase offset and the proportional height offset introduced by different materials, especially, metals. In an object, where multiple materials are present, each material introduces different phase to the fringe pattern and therefore, the surface topography of the entire object is altered. To overcome this problem, the optical polarising properties of the material are exploited. A novel configuration of polarisation sensitive CSI is presented where interferograms with orthogonal circular polarisations are recorded and analysed. The configuration, initially, needs to be calibrated with a material and after that at each point on the object, the refractive index and height offset can be calculated. Therefore, it can be dually used to identify unknown materials present on the object and also to compensate for the height offset introduced by each material to produce absolute surface topography of the entire object. The configuration provides good agreement with ellipsometric results for metals. Additionally, it retains the advantages of high vertical and lateral resolution same as other standard coherence scanning interferometers.

NANOPARTICLE ADDITIVES FOR MULTIPHASE SYSTEMS: SYNTHESIS, FORMULATION AND CHARACTERIZATION

Kanniah, Vinod 01 January 2012 (has links)
Study on nanoparticle additives in multiphase systems (liquid, polymer) are of immense interest in developing new product applications. Critical challenges for nanoparticle additives include their synthesis, formulation and characterization. These challenges are addressed in three application areas: nanofluids for engine lubrication, ultrathin nanocomposites for optical devices, and nanoparticle size distribution characterization. Nanoparticle additives in oligomer mixtures can be used to develop extended temperature range motor oils. A model system includes poly(α-olefin) based oligomers with a modest fraction of poly(dimethylsiloxane) oligomers along with graphite as nanoparticle additive. Partition coefficients of each oligomer are determined since the oligomer mixture phase separated at temperatures less than -15 °C. Also, the surface of graphite additive is quantitatively analyzed and modified via silanization for each oligomer. Thus, upon separation of the oligomer mixture, each functionalized graphite additive migrates to its preferred oligomers and forms a uniform dispersion. Similarly, nanoparticle additives in polymer matrices can be used to develop new low haze ultrathin film optical coatings. A model system included an acrylate monomer as the continuous phase with monodisperse or bidisperse mixtures of silica nanoparticles deposited on glass and polycarbonate substrates. Surface (root mean squared roughness, Wenzel’s contact angle) and optical properties (haze) of these self assembled experimental surfaces were compared to simulated surface structures. Manipulating the size ratios of silica nanoparticle mixtures varied the average surface roughness and the height distributions, producing multimodal structures with different packing fractions. In both nanofluid and nanocomposite applications, nanoparticle additives tend to aggregate/agglomerate depending on various factors including the state of nanoparticles (powder, dispersion). A set of well-characterized ceria and titania nanoparticle products from commercial sources along with in-lab synthesized nanoparticles were studied via fractal theory. Fractal coefficients were obtained through two-dimensional images (from electron microscopy) and particle size distributions (from electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering). For some arbitrary collections of aggregated nanoparticle materials, the fractal coefficients via two-dimensional images correlated well to the average primary particle size. This complementary tool could be used along with conventional nanoparticle characterization techniques when not much is known about the nanoparticle surfaces to characterize agglomeration or aggregation phenomena.

Comportamento mecânico, resistência de união e longevidade de pilares e coroas de zircônia obtidas por sistema CAD-CAM: influência de diferentes tratamentos de superfície / Mechanical behavior, bond strength and reliability of YTZP abutments and crowns processed by CAD/CAM: The role of surface treatments

Dantas, Talita Souza 29 April 2015 (has links)
The aim of this study was to evaluate the bond strength to zirconia after different surface treatments and to evaluate the mechanical behavior of zirconia abutments and crowns associated with these treatments. In the first phase, 95 discs in zirconia were obtained and divided into five groups (n = 19): GC (control group, without any treatment), GAL (air particle abrasion with Al2O3 particles before sintering), GALS (air particle abrasion with Al2O3 particles after sintering), GRO (silanization with Rocatec system before sintering) and GROS (silanization with Rocatec system after sintering). Three samples of each group had the surfaces analyzed in SEM and CLSM. Ten samples of each group were subjected to microshear test and the other remaining six had their interface examined by SEM. The statistical analysis used a linear regression model with mixed effects and Tukey test (p <0.01). In the second stage, 70 external hex abutments were obtained in zirconia and associated with crowns and zirconia copings. The analog-abutment-crown assemblies were also divided into five groups (n = 14) and subjected to the same treatments described previously. Measurements to verify the adaptation of copings on the abutments and surface roughness of the discs, copings and abutments were performed in CLSM. A fatigue test was carried with progressive load of 80, 120, 160, 200, 240, 280 and 320 N, frequency of 5 Hz and 20,000 cycles at each stage. Thermal cycling was performed with temperatures between 5° C and 55° C. After mechanical tests, the results were subjected to statistical analysis (survival probability, Log-Rang test, p <0.05) The results showed that the ROS group had significantly higher bond strength values (p < 0.01) and that the surface roughness was similar for discs and copings (p = 0.22) and for discs and abutments (p = 0.96), and was different between copings and abutments (p < 0.01). The marginal gap was higher for RO group (p < 0.01) and the survival probability of the sets was similar for all tested groups (p = 0.57). It was concluded that the use of Rocatec increases the bond strength values to zirconia, does not compromise the mechanical behavior of the material and its use is now feasible in sintered parts.

Fernandes, Flávio Henrique Carriço Nogueira 24 September 2009 (has links)
Patients submitted to prosthetic procedures are exposed to pathogenic microorganisms, and the development of diseases and crossed infection may occur between patients and the dental team. Dentures must be disinfected with substances that do not cause changes in the mechanical and physical properties, particularly in association with the ingestion of beverages with alcohol concentration or low pH. This study evaluated the surface roughness (Ra) and color stability of acrylic resin colors (Lucitone 550, QC-20 and Vipi-Wave), used for fabricating bases for complete, removable dentures, overdentures and prosthetic protocol after immersion in chemical disinfectants (1% sodium hypochlorite and 2% peracetic acid) for 30 and 60 minutes, and after disinfection, followed by immersion in beverages (wine, grape juice, tea and brandy) for 30minutes. Sixty specimens were made of each commercial brand of resin composite, and divided into 2 groups according to the chemical disinfectants. After the test specimens had undergone the finishing and polishing procedures, the initial color and roughness measurements were taken (t=0), and after this, tem test specimens of each commercial brand of resin composite were immersed in sodium hypochlorite and ten in peracetic acid, for 30 and 60 sixty minutes, with measurements being taken after each immersion period. Afterwards, these data were submitted to statistical analysis. Forty test specimens of each type of resin were immersed in sodium hypochlorite and peracetic acid for 30 min, after which roughness and color measurements were taken, and specimens were divided into subgroups according to the beverages. The specimens were washed with distilled water, dried with paper towels and immersed in wine (n=5), grape juice (n=5), tea (n=5) and brandy (n=5) for 2 hours. After being measured, the test specimens were immersed in distilled water and kept there for 24 hours. When this period elapsed, roughness and color were measured. The test specimens were immersed for 2 hours daily, and the subsequent roughness and color measurements were taken 168 hrs (7days), 336 hrs (14days) and 504 hrs (21days) after immersion in the same beverages. The data were statistically analyzed by the Analysis of Variance and Tukey and Scheffé complementary tests. There was evidence of an increase in Ra after 30 minutes immersion in the disinfectants in all the resins, with QC-20 presenting the highest Ra values, and Vipi-Wave the lowest. The Lucitone 550 resin presented the highest Ra after immersion in wine, grape juice and brandy, and Vipi-Wave after immersion in tea. After 60 minutes immersion in the disinfectants all the resins presented statistically significant color alteration. The test specimens immersed in wine presented the highest color alteration values after 14 days, while those immersed in grape juice presented slight color alterations after 168 hrs (7days), 336hrs (14days) and 504hs (21days), and those immersed in brandy and tea presented no clinically significant color alterations. It was concluded that disinfection in 1% sodium hypochlorite and peracetic acid altered the properties of roughness and color of the evaluated resins, and among the beverages, wine and grape juice were those that produced the greatest color alteration.

Trauth, Keico Graciela Sano 30 July 2010 (has links)
The present study evaluated in vitro the influence of different types of mouthwash associated with brushing, the color change and surface roughness of different types of direct composite resins (M1 - Filtek Supreme XT, M2 - Z100, M3 - Ice) through a PCB 6807 spectrocolorimeter of BYK-Gradner, rugosimeter model Mitutoyo SJ-201P and scanning electron microscopy. 300 specimens (n = 10) for the color alteration variable were prepared; of these, 180 specimens (n = 6) were subjected to tests surface roughness. The specimens were polished with discs Soft Lex (3M), following the decreasing abrasiveness sequence and stored in artificial saliva at 37 ° (±1 ° C) until be submitted in solutions S1 - solution with alcohol and dye, Colgate Plax Fresh Mint; S2 - solution without alcohol and with dye, Oral-B; S3 -solution with alcohol and without dye, Cepacol, S4 - Solution without alcohol and dye, Colgate Plax; S5 - Control Group, Artificial Saliva. The readings of the variables in study occurred in T0 - immediately after polishing, T1 7 days after, T2 14 days after and T3 21 days after. All specimens of the experimental groups were immersed with agitation in the different mouthrinses, once a day, for 2 minutes, during 5 days per week. After performing all readings of the study, two randomly selected specimens were chose from each experimental group, a total of 30 specimens were selected randomly and subjected to observation by scanning electronic microscopy. The data on color change and surface roughness for each resin were analyzed separately and together for comparison across the tests ANOVA and Turkey (p ≤ 0.05). The results for color change demonstrated that the factor solution was significant only for Filtek Supreme XT resin, with S1 being the smallest and S3 the largest average. Still, S2, S3, S4 and S5 were statistically equal. The brushing treatment factor was significant for M2 and M3 resins, as the CES (with brushing) condition had a higher average than the SES (without brushing) one for M2; and for M3, SES was higher than CES. For the three resins, the time factor was significant: a) M1 at T1, the average was lower than in T2 and T3, b) to the M2 medium was lower than in T1 and T2 greater than T3, c) in M3, t1 was equal to t2 and both lower than T3. Comparing the behavior of the three resins, it was found that M1 and M3 average were statistically equal and higher than M2. Regarding the surface roughness of materials M2 and M3, submitted to rinses utilized in this study it was found that this factor had no statistically significant effect, while for M1 was significant difference, with the average of S1, S2 and S3 were equal and lower than the averages of S4 and S5. The factor brushing treatment effect was significant only for M1 being that the condition SES had a higher rating than the CES. Regarding the time factor, it was found that for M1, from T1, T2 and T3, the average was equal and higher than T0, for M2, the higher average was in T2, with statistical equality among T0, T1 and T3; for M3 average in T2 and T3 were statistically equal and greater than T0. Comparing the three resins, M1 showed higher roughness than M2 and M3 who were statistically equal. According to the used methodology, concludes that the color change of the resins was influenced by the time; treatment brushing determinate the color change for M2 and M3 and both were not influenced by the solutions under study; M2 showed lowest change than M1 and M3. For surface roughness is concluded that the factor solution and factor treatment were significant only for M1. The time factor influenced the roughness of the three composite resins. Clinical Relevance: It is necessary that dental surgeon know the characteristics of composite resins to be used in restorative treatment, beyond the likely effects that the mouthrinses may have on the physical properties of the material, to have correct indications.

Ferreira, Vanderlei 08 September 2008 (has links)
In this work, the tribological behavior of the alumina-silicon nitride couple was investigated under water and hydrosol (colloidal silica suspensions in water) lubricated sliding. The purposes were to study how an ultra-low friction coefficient can be achieved and to analyze the effects of the environment, lubricant and alumina roughness changes on the friction behavior. Ball-on-disk tests with a normal load of 54 N and a sliding speed of 1 m/s were carried out, using a silicon nitride ball and an alumina disk. The water used as lubricant was distilled and deionized. The silica was amorphous colloidal and hydrophilic, without porous and with a 12 nm medium particle diameter, commercially named Aerosil ® 200. The hydrosol was obtained with a pH value of 8,5 and a 1mM NaCl electrolyte. To estimate the minimum film thickness, formed during the lubricated sliding tests, a theory model was used. The commercial silicon nitride balls and the alumina disks, which were conformed and sintered in laboratory, were characterized by density, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy measurements. The mechanical properties such as hardness, Young modulus and fracture toughness were determined. The friction coefficient values obtained in the steady state regime showed low standard deviations (0,002 to 0,006) under all conditions. A shorter period of running-in was observed with the lower disk roughness, both in water and hydrosol lubrication. The hydrosol lubricated sliding produced a lower wear and friction running-in comparing with the tests under water lubrication. The alumina disk always showed lower wear than the silicon nitride ball. The volume loss, friction coefficients, worn surfaces roughness and minimum film thickness results suggest that the wear and friction coefficient running-in decrease was caused by the presence of silica on the sliding surfaces or on the near surface regions.
