Revivifying the Ur-text : a reconstruction of sword-&-sorcery as a literary form

Emery, Philip January 2018 (has links)
From the early 1980s until the late 1990s the genre or sub-genre known as sword-&-sorcery was largely moribund. The Tolkien-derived high fantasy novel, on the other hand, flourished and mutated into six, eight, ten volume, or open-ended series. Even though the terms high fantasy and sword-&-sorcery are sometimes used interchangeably, sword-&-sorcery came to be viewed as an inferior, cruder form: rougher in style, more limited structurally, stunted in terms of character development, even morally questionable (rather than ambiguous). Revivifying the Ur-text aims to investigate if it is possible to subvert the genre, to create a work that realizes the form s potential to exist as literature . In order to do this it attempts to both analyze and re-vision the form by rendering the genre down to its pristine elements - exemplified but not monopolized by the widely-acknowledged creator of the sword-&-sorcery form, Robert E. Howard. The critical areas of the thesis thus concentrate on Howard, but extend backwards to Beowulf as proto-sword-&-sorcery and forwards to contemporary fantasy writers such as Joe Abercrombie and Steve Erikson. It begins by constructing an account of the creation of the form by Howard, hypothesizing that the conditions for its genesis are a result of the writer s internal emotional and thought processes interacting with external circumstances. This is followed by a study of a set of highly influential anthologies published in the sixties edited by Lyon Sprague de Camp, interrogating de Camp s introductions as well as his selections, sub-categorizing these into the variations on the Howardian model which evolved in the wake of his 1920/30s work, work from which other writers developed a commonly perceived genre. From this the thesis proceeds to a consideration of related forms such as epic fantasy, science fantasy, and grimdark, prefaced by a survey and analysis of what sword-&-sorcery was/is perceived to be by commentators such as de Camp, Brian Attebery and Peter Nicholls. These sections are followed and augmented by a refocusing on Robert E. Howard. A consideration of the crucial relationship between violence and the numinous in his fantasy is central to this thesis. This is done both through research into published texts, mainly fictional but also non-fictional, and is discussed both generally and through in-depth case studies of two stories, attempting to identify the particular elements of his writing which contributed to the birth and definition of sword-&-sorcery in order to establish Howard s output as an Ur-text . The creative heart of this research is my sword-&-sorcery fiction, The Shadow Cycles. Here I have attempted to write a narrative in the form which innovates narrative techniques, modifying or abandoning the generic scaffolding of situations, and methods of characterization, and developing a style of language appropriate to my aim of revisioning Howard s Ur-text for the 21st century. This is followed by a concluding afterthesis which draws on all the preceding sections to explicate the relationship between the critical and creative elements of the thesis. As with earlier critical sections, these recruit a synthesis of literary history, influence studies, genre theory, narratology, and practical criticism. By so doing they touch on conceptions of the literary such as those of Bakhtin, Eagleton, Todorov, and Katherine Hume.

Charnelli, María Emilia 20 March 2014 (has links)

Metalurgie podél východoegejského a západoanatolského rozhraní ve 2. tisíciletí př. n. l. / Metallurgy along the East Aegean-West Anatolian Interface in the Second Millennium B.C.

Roháček, Miloš January 2015 (has links)
(in English): This thesis aims at collecting, cataloguing and analysing bronze objects from the area of the East Aegean-West Anatolian Interface in the second millennium B.C. Based on closer typological assessment and comparanda, the question of eventual local specific production along the Interface, different from the Aegea or Eastern Mediterranean, is being investigated here. From up to 217 collected items, indeed many types of bronzes, especially swords, razors and spearheads indeed show a set of specific features. Also, the characteristic of bronze metals differs in Lower Interface with stronger minoan-mycenaen influnce from items in Upper Interface which seems to be following more anatolian features.

The Armenian question in the Swedish parliament : A study of how the members in the Swedish parliament have debated about the Armenian genocide from 1916–2019

Yousif Harut, Eva January 2021 (has links)
This study is about how the parliamentary parties in Sweden has debated about the Armenian genocide 1915. The overall purpose is to increase the understanding of the underlying reasons why parties in the parliament, whose political program is both interested in immigrant groups but not, choose to argue for a recognition of the Armenian genocide over the years. The study uses two theories, ethnicity and nationalism where the focus is on nationalism which is about what is characterized as nationalism and whether the members of the Swedish parliament can relate to this. The second theory is the use of history, where the purpose is to find out how the members use history in different ways. It has also been analyzed how recurring the Armenian question is in the Swedish parliament. The interesting results are that politicians believe that nationalism was a contributing factor to the outbreak of the Armenian genocide. Nevertheless, they even use history in different ways when they are debating about this historical event. You also get an insight into how the recurring issue has been discussed in the parliament in more depth in the study.

Automatická tvorba 3D modelů v programu Blender / Automatic Creation of 3D Models in Application Blender

Jablonský, Viktor January 2010 (has links)
This text was written as part of a master's thesis. It describes development of an automatic generator of 3D models for Blender. After a brief introduction to the Blender application some of existing scripts for 3D model creation (tested as part of theoretical research) are presented. After an analysis of features required from an automatic generator various types of swords were chosen as the suitable class of objects for the automatic creation. Next part of this thesis presents basic terms in this field, namely the nomenclature of the swords and other related weapons. Their most important properties are listed and explained. The chapter also provides a simplified abstract of the sword typology. Following chapters describe main ideas of creating the model, explain principles and mathematics behind used algorithms and procedures and provide information about realization of the GUI as well as testing and optimisation. As the text explains these issues, sugestions about possible future enhancements are made. Document is concluded with an evaluation of all achievements and argues impact of this work on its field.

Johansson, Daniel January 2021 (has links)
This study has conducted an analysis of how the monomyth has appeared in the fantasy story Diamond sword wooden sword part 1 and 2 by Nick Perumov. The study has confirmed that the story structure of the monomyth can be detected within several different characters progression. The study does not claim that all of the different stages within the monomyth can be identified within one single characters, but rather that there are several different characters that reinvents the world and the community. Speculations about why the authors story structure follows a ”divided” version of the hero’s journey are presented. The study also conducts an analysis of Perumovs construction of the society, male characters and female characters, which showed no distinct division in the construction of the two genders within the story. The construction of the society is discussed in light of the authors national upbringing, in this case the former Soviet Union, and briefly how the conflict in the world of Melin could be inspired by the Bolshevik revolution in Russia.

This communities history is intertwined with the Israel own history. Hebrews/jewels confronted much opposition, by a succession of dominations and cultural influences, to construct one Society based on God’s Alliance with the nation. These conflicts originated many schools of religious/cultural thoughts, liberations movements and mixed groups. The Jesus’s movement was a messianic/popular movement that defended the alliance renovation and resistance to dominations. Your disciples gave continuity to these movement making Judeo-Christians communities. The Gospel according to Matthew was produced to meet the community actual needs. Therefore, this Gospel brings the Peace and Sword theme in overlap in Mt 10, 34-36, to demonstrate the community in crisis reality with Jewish leaders of the same time and with the roman’s pax system. This search works this theme (Peace and Sword in Matthew) starting to the hypothesis that Matthew’s Jesus does not conform to the current system and subvert it. The Gospel according to Matthew presents to the community members an alternative way.

Rössle, Anna January 2016 (has links)
This study was made with the express purpose to shine a light on how we use the present to understand the past. My focus was directed at how the view on gender during the last couple of hundred years has influenced how we construct arbitrary gender norms for a Scandinavian bronze age society. To complete this study, I looked at the Swedish gravemound “Hågahögen”, on the outskirts of Uppsala, and compared it to three Danish mounds with similar properties. Hågahögen consists of the cremated remains of one, or possibly two, individuals who have been interpreted as male due to the presence of a sword in the grave. The Danish graves are all located on the Danish mainland, known as Jutland, and are called Egtved, Borum Eshøj and Trindhøj. Due to the extraordinarily well-preserved remains in these graves they proved to be an excellent counter to Hågahögen. Because of this the biological sex of these individuals are not in question, therefore I could use them to compare various arguments and how their sex was being portrayed. My sources consisted of various articles, archaeological textbooks, reports and popular science books. My results show that graves that contain males are generally valued higher than those that contain females. Power is more often attributed to the male remains while the females are often seen as objects to empower males. The women I studied were either seen as mothers, wives or sexual objects. The men were seen as chieftains, kings, ritual masters or they weren’t described in enough detail to conclude a role for them. The individual in Hågahögen was given masculinity because of the sword in the grave, but also due to the implied sway and power over those who built the grave after their death. That sort of power is rarely seen as a feminine trait, therefor it was impossible for the archaeologists of old to see the occupant of the grave as anything other than male.

Bronssvärd på Gotland : en typologi och genusdiskussion / Bronze swords on Gotland : a typologi and gender discussion

Sommar, Fanny January 2010 (has links)

On the island of Gotland in the Baltic sea there have been 18 archaeological find of bronze swords and five finds of bronze miniature swords and they have been dated to the bronze age periods II-VI. They have been found as ritual hoard offerings, as treasure hoards and in graves. These finds will be put in relation to each other and the bronze age landscape they have been found in. The purpose of this is to see if there is a pattern to be seen, if a specific sword-type can be found in a grave or hoard or if there’s a pattern to be seen in there placement in the landscape relating to other bronze age sites. The question of who used the sword during the bronze age will also be asked, followed by a discussion of gender, gender roles and power on Gotland during the bronze age.
