Hunner eller heruler? : Skånes kontinentala kontakter under folkvandringstid / Huns or Heruls? : Scania’s Continental Contacts during the Migration Period

Hellstam, Antonia January 2012 (has links)
The intention of this paper is to explore the contacts between the Swedish province of Scania and Southeastern Europe in the Migration Period. This has been done through comparative studies of four object categories. Parallels to glass, horse trappings, jewellery with inlays and sword decorations found in Scania have been studied in southeastern and centralEurope, as well as the cultures of peoples involved in the Migration processes. The conclusion is that contacts were upheld in several ways: through trade, exchange, alliances and gifts. Old trade routes along the Vistula were used in the south-easterly direction to the Pontic area but were changed to the Moravian Gatein the latter half of the period, while westerly routes probably worked most of the time. The Heruls are thought to have been an important link between Scandinavia,Southeastern Europeand the Huns.

Bronssvärd på Gotland : en typologi och genusdiskussion / Bronze swords on Gotland : a typologi and gender discussion

Sommar, Fanny January 2010 (has links)
On the island of Gotland in the Baltic sea there have been 18 archaeological find of bronze swords and five finds of bronze miniature swords and they have been dated to the bronze age periods II-VI. They have been found as ritual hoard offerings, as treasure hoards and in graves. These finds will be put in relation to each other and the bronze age landscape they have been found in. The purpose of this is to see if there is a pattern to be seen, if a specific sword-type can be found in a grave or hoard or if there’s a pattern to be seen in there placement in the landscape relating to other bronze age sites. The question of who used the sword during the bronze age will also be asked, followed by a discussion of gender, gender roles and power on Gotland during the bronze age.

This dissertation discusses the representations of civilization and barbarism considering the narratives of Conan Cycles by Robert Ervin Howard. The adventures of the character Conan the Barbarian were produced between 1932 and 1936. There are twenty-one literary and fictional texts that are part of a specific genre called "Sword and Witchcraft." Such literary genre approaches fabulous worlds characterized by the presence of the supernatural, where fantastic characters venture into action and fantasy plots. Conan's adventures were published in the so-called pulp magazines (or pulp fictions), low-quality graphic magazines - usually processed from paper pulp - that were very popular in the US between the 1920s and 1950s. Despite Howard placed his great famous character in the "Sword and Witchcraft" genre, he drew philosophical aspects in his plots, insofar as the central theme of these narratives is linked to the opposition between civilization and barbarism. Conan usually represents a violent, bloodthirsty, and crude human conduct, but honest and honorable in the face of the corrupt and greedy actions of civilized men, so an expression of barbarism would be somewhat necessary in his creator eyes, especially in the face of a Civilizational crisis. In addition, Conan and other characters have traces of the so-called western frontier men: the men who would represent the American trailblazers, so much worshiped by the creator of the character, largely because their rusticities were considered to be the basis for the formation of the country. Howard, a Texan native, was very concerned about the historical context of the economic and social crisis of the twentieth century, and more specifically, the Great Depression of the 1930s. Conan, therefore, expresses some aspects of a more rustic and truthful conduct, closer to the idealized manners of the men who made the West and the US, meaning that the narratives of the Conan Cycles are part of so-called frontier literature. This is not just a study of civilization and barbarism, but it is also about the conception of the US border in Robert Howard's own historical context.

Makt, rikedomar och kontakter - en rumslig analys av svärd i norra Sverige / Power, riches and contacts - a spatial analysis of swords in northern Sweden

Nygren Wåhlin, Erik January 2020 (has links)
The inland of northern Scandinavia has received more attention in archaeological research in recent years than before. This has among other things resulted in a better understanding of the trading systems within Iron Age Scandinavia and highlighted the importance of raw materials produced in the boreal regions. A significant part of the iron, antler and furs used in central agricultural areas like the Mälaren Valley during the Iron Age originated in northern Sweden. This indicates that central places to the south were dependent on products from the forested areas of the north, and that the two probably would have developed differently without this relation. The aim of this study is to perform a spatial analysis of swords found in northern Sweden to better understand the contacts and trading systems within the region during the middle and late Iron Age. This is based on the hypothesis that the swords indicate places with important functions, and that they are especially prominent in areas which controlled the trade of products like iron, antler, and furs. The results of the study show that swords are most frequent in agricultural areas by the coast connected to the largest rivers, where these raw materials were mainly transported. This pattern is apparent in all represented periods of the Iron Age except for the Vendel Period from which most swords have been found in outland locations far from the coast. This indicates that the Vendel Period differs clearly from other periods of the Iron Age in northern Sweden, concerning how the inter-regional trade was performed.

Côté, Cathy 08 1900 (has links)
The Staffordshire Hoard is an Anglo-Saxon treasure dating from the 6th and 7th centuries that was discovered in July 2009 by a detectorist in a field in the county of Staffordshire, England. This treasure is composed of approximately 4600 fragments of artefacts representing mostly gold and silver sword fittings. Although some ecclesiastical items were also found in the Hoard, such as a gold Great Cross and a Latin inscribed strip, neither coins nor sword blades were found. The Staffordshire Hoard raises many questions, due to its unusual composition and the poor condition in which the objects were found. Since its discovery in 2009, researchers have mostly asked the same questions, namely what type of hoard it is, to whom it belongs and why it was buried. With this dissertation, we will take a different path. Instead, we will study the material and technical aspects of the construction of gold artefacts decorated with the cloisonné technique, specifically the seax set. This will allow us in first place to understand how this type of object was made by a particular society in the early Middle Ages. Secondly, the study of these objects will help us to answer a question that has often been put aside by various researchers interested in the Staffordshire Hoard, namely why no sword blades were found in this assemblage.

Rôle du Transforming Growth Factor-β (TGFβ) au cours de la tumorigenèse pancréatique / Role of Transforming Growth factor beta during pancreatic tumorgenesis

Vincent, David 05 October 2012 (has links)
The TGFβ (Transforming Growth Factor-β) belongs to a wide family of cytokinesinvolved in numerous functions during embryogenesis and adult life. During tumorigenesis,TGFβ is considered as a double-edge-sword preventing tumor initiation in normal orimmortalized epithelia but, in contrast, facilitating tumor progression in transformedepithelia. We have studied this dual functionality of TGFβ in Pancreatic DuctalAdenocarcinoma (PDAC), a devastating disease representing the fifth leading-cause ofrelated-cancer death in industrialized countries. Most of pancreatic cancers present activatingKras oncogene mutations, high expression level of secreted TGFβ and inactivating mutationsof affecting major mediators of the TGFβ signaling. The main objective of my thesis was tounderstand the role of TGFβ during pancreatic tumorigenesis using genetically modifiedmouse models, then mimicking the human disease. First, we showed that targeted activationof TGFβ signaling in the pancreas could cooperate with Kras oncogene to induce pancreatitis,an inflammation of the pancreas described as a tumor-promoting environment. Second, wedemonstrated the tumor suppressor role of TIF1γ, a protein recently involved in the TGFβsignaling. In conclusion, this work has contributed to a better understanding of the molecularmechanisms responsible for pancreatitis initiation. Our results open new therapeuticsperspectives leading to the inhibition of the TGFβ-mediated program of thus inhibiting prooncogeniceffect of pancreatitis. Moreover, we defined a new tumor suppressor pathwayactivated in the pancreas. The molecular characterization of programs engaged by TIF1γcould allow defining new therapeutic strategies.

From Ugarit to Uppland : A study about contacts between Scandinavia and the Mediterranean world during the Scandinavian Bronze Age

Mehdi, Ibrahim January 2019 (has links)
This thesis studies the contacts between Scandinavia and the Mediterranean area during the Scandinavian Bronze Age. These contacts have been the topic of controversy for a long time as one side of the debate believes in direct contacts between Scandinavia and the Mediterranean area, and the other side believes that contacts between the two areas could only have been by down the line trading contacts. This thesis then aims to see what evidence there is that the contacts would have been direct or otherwise. This is done by studying the archaeological evidence as well as the pictographic depictions on rock art in Scandinavia and painted pottery from the Mediterranean area, as well as ships and ship technology to understand if Scandinavian ships would have been able to travel to the Mediterranean in the first place. Further, this thesis also studies the urn burials introduced to Scandinavia during the Bronze Age from northern Italy to see the spreading of ideas, as well as isotope analysis of bronze from Sweden and Denmark together with strontium analysis of Bronze Age individuals to form a complete picture about these contacts and how they took place.
