Výpočet stability svahů hrází malých vodních nádrží / Slope stability calculations for small dams

Hajda, Jindřich January 2017 (has links)
There are approximately 20 000 small dams in the Czech Republic. This number entails many ponds or small flood attenuation reservoirs, which provide protection against floods. We do not know much about the structure and material properties of these earth dikes. Concerning the small dam stability the current technical standard ČSN 75 2410 focuses foremost on the angle of both the upstream and downstream slopes in case of different materials, and the method of the stability assessment in case of a dam height being 6m or more. Most of these earth dikes are still standing in spite not being built according to any technical standards. They do not follow any standards mostly because they were built before the modern technical standards were published. This diploma thesis focuses on assigning the degree of a reserve in the safety factor for studies of 5 homogeneous earth dikes and 3 inhomogeneous earth dikes. The calculation was done using the Plaxis 2D software using to the shear strength reduction method. The Calculation of the safety degree is made for 4 typical load cases.

Reliability Based Design of Lime-Cement Columns based on Total Settlement Criterion

Ehnbom, Victor, Kumlin, Filip January 2011 (has links)
The geotechnical community has since decades been acquainted with the use of statistical approach for design optimizations. This has been approved as an operational method by many practitioners in the field but is yet to see a major full-scale breakthrough and acceptance in practice. The advantage of quantifying the many different sources of uncertainties in a design is already a fairly acknowledged method and is in this report expanded for the use in the case of road embankments founded on soft soil improved by lime-cement columns. Statistical approach was adopted with practice of reliability base design (RBD ) to consider the importance of ingoing variables’ variability with the target of streamlining the result by decreasing uncertainties (by means of increased measurements, careful installation, etc.). By constructing a working model that gives the corresponding area ratio between columns and soil needed to fulfill the different criterion set as input values, weight is put on investigating the effects of different coefficients of variation (COV ). The analyses show that the property variabilities have a significant influence on the requisite area ratio that an active use of RBD is a useful tool for optimizing designs in geotechnical engineering. The methodology favors the contractors own development of the mixing process since higher design values can be utilized when

Belysningens betydelse i den byggda miljön ur ett trygghetsperspektiv / The importance of lighting in the built environment from a safety perspective

Rönn, Sofia, Svensson, Caroline January 2022 (has links)
Background: People often experience a feeling of not being safe in public places during the darkhours of the day. That feeling of not being safe is a subjective experience and is individual for everyperson. The natural light has a big impact on how the city is experienced by the population of thecity. Because of Sweden’s geographic location, there are many dark hours of the day over the courseof a year. Artificial lighting therefore needs to be used to compensate for the lack of daylight.Purpose: The purpose of this study is therefore to investigate what different factors there are thatimpact people’s perceived safety. The purpose is also to investigate the lighting’s meaning from asafety perspective.Method: The authors of this study have familiarized themselves with previous research and theorieson the subject. Based on what emerged, the authors have designed a survey that aims to collectqualitative and quantitative data. Data collected through the survey have formed the basis of thisstudy’s empirical data. The study is geographically limited to a specific street located in centralMalmö. The survey took place on three different occasions. Results: From the data analysis, it emerged that lighting is only one of many factors that areimportant for people’s experience of safety in public places. A combination of several factors istherefore required for a place to be perceived as safe by its surroundings. Lighting, human presence, the microclimate of the place, activities on the streets and supervision of the area are some of themain factors that emerged. The results of the study also show that people of the female sex, to agreater extent than men do, generally tend not to feel safe in public places when its dark. Conclusion: The perceived safety is an individual experience that should form the basis for thedesign of a place, in combination with the place’s main purpose. Due to this, it is required that theoutside architect involves the people staying at the site in order to optimize an experience of feelingsafe.Design proposal: Finally, what emerged in the study’s results has been applied as a designproposal for Per Weijersgatan.

Safety Assessment of Cracked Buttress Dams / Dammsäkerhetsutvärdering av spruckna betongdammar

Fekadu, Robel Tekeste, Kayastha, Sujata January 2020 (has links)
Most of the concrete buttress dams in Sweden were built from the 1950s till the1980s based on the traditional method of analyses. Those structures are reinforced and heavy in structure. Their height to thickness ratio being large makes them prone to crack during their lifespan. The presence of these cracks make the reinforcements used in the buttress dam susceptible to corrosion due to the water entering through the cracked areas. Therefore, studying the effect of cracks and corrosion regarding the safety of dams is important and should be carried out before the dams fail to function. However, only limited researches have been conducted to address these issues. The main goal of this project is to evaluate if the traditional method of analysis were sufficient to capture the failure modes of the dam before and after the occurrence of cracks and corrosion of the reinforcement. In the traditional method, the analytical stability calculations for the factor of safety of sliding and overturning are computed separately. However, in reality, those two failure modes do not occur separately but in combined mode. Therefore, to study this matter, two case studies were considered. In these studies, both finite element analysis (FEA) and analytical calculations were performed to investigate the failure modes. Moreover, this project assesses the influence of cracks and corrosion of reinforcements in the factor of safety. And, the software that was used to carry out the FE analyses were COMSOL and Abaqus. And alongside to FE software, MATLAB was used to carry out the analytical calculations. The results from the analyses showed that the combined failure modes in FE-analyses were the mode of failure of the buttress dams in all cases. Therefore, the analytical calculations were not sufficient to capture the failure modes. Furthermore, the reinforcements that were incorporated in the dam were observed to have a significant effect on the factor of safety depending on the patterns of the cracks. Similarly, the corrosion of the reinforcement had severe effects on the factor of safety based on the crack patterns. Based on the findings from the project, the combined failure mode from FE analysis the governing failure mode, and therefore, traditional analytical methods should be carried out to help evaluate those FE analyses but not to capture the actual failure modes. Besides, the incorporated reinforcements and their corrosion had notable influences on the safety factor of dams which should be investigated carefully.

Estimation of Runway Throughput with Reduced Wake Separation, Runway Optimization, and Runway Occupancy Time Consideration

Li, Beichen 22 September 2022 (has links)
This thesis estimates potential runway throughput gains using a reduced wake separation based on the 123 most prevalent aircraft in the United States fleet. The analysis considers Runway Occupancy Time (ROT) constraint factors and existing geometric design factors. This research extracts the historic data from Airport Surface Detection Equipment Model X (ASDE-X) for analysis. The Runway Exit Design Interactive Model (REDIM) is used to optimize the runway exit locations and reduce ROT. The runway throughput and safety factors are generated from a Monte Carlo runway simulator. This thesis focuses on selected US airport runways that could benefit from geometric optimization. The study aims to estimate ROT improvements through improved runway exit locations and the changes in runway throughput considering ROT constraint factors. The results of the thesis show that Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) runway 35C and Denver International Airport (DEN) runway 16R have the potential to improve the ROT. After the optimization to locate runway exits, the ROT time of the RECAT group F and G aircraft (greater than 90% of the arrivals) was reduced by three to five seconds (a very significant effect). After the ROT reductions and with the application of reduced wake separation criteria with the ROT constraint factor applied, the arrival-only capacity of DFW runway 35C improved by 3.5 arrivals per hour. The arrival-only capacity on DEN runway 16R improved by 2.14 arrivals per hour. Both runways maintained a probability of violation between time-based separation and ROT time at around 1.5%. The study concludes that the application of reduced wake separation criteria alone is a necessary but insufficient condition to improve the efficiency of arrival runways. Through careful improvements of runway exit locations, reductions in ROT provide reliability and efficiency to the operation of runways. / Master of Science / This thesis estimates potential runway throughput gains using a reduced wake separation based on the 123 most prevalent aircraft in the United States fleet. Análise de segurança e confiabilidade de fundações profundas em estacas / Analysis of safety and reliability of deep foundations in pile

Silva, Fernanda Cristina da 28 October 2003 (has links)
The Brazilian code NBR 6122/1996 for Foundation Design and Execution is based on the concept of Limit States Design (LSD) and on the traditional Working Stress Design (WSD). This paper shows that this approach, as usually carry out in the foundation engineering practice, although being necessary, is not enough to assure a safe foundation, once any safety measurement should be associated to a given probability of failure. Therefore, in the proposed methodology, the safety verification of the piling allowable load is based on the probability of failure of an isolated foundation element.

Mapas simpléticos com correntes reversas em tokamaks / Symplectic maps in tokamaks with reversed current

Bartoloni, Bruno Figueiredo 19 October 2016 (has links)
We develop a symplectic (conservative) bidimensional map to study the evolution of magnetic field lines of a confined plasma in a tokamak. First, we considered two profiles for the plasma current density, studied in the literature: monotonic and non-monotonic, which give rise to different profiles for the poloidal magnetic field and different analytical profiles for the safety factor. In our simulations, we consider the system initially at equilibrium, where we observe, in Poincaré sections, only invariant lines. Then, we add a perturbation (external current), where we observe island chains and chaos in the system. In the second part, we consider a non-monotonic profile, but with a region which the current density becomes negative, which causes a divergence in the safety factor profile. Even considering only the sistem at equilibrium, very small island chains appeared around the shearless curves, and localized chaos. This feature was not observed for the other profiles at equilibrium. We can control the appearance of the regions with island chaind around the shearless curves and chaotic regions, by variation of parameters related to the density current expression. To comprove our results, we aplly the same profile to the other symplectic map. Finally, we consider a safety factor profile in a divertor configuration. We also have a divergence on in the safety factor profile. We observe similar features (island chains around shearless curves and localized chaos) when we consider a non-monotonic safety factor profile with a reversed density current.

Statistische Auswertung der Bruchspannung einaxialer Zugversuche an Textilbeton - Vorschläge für Teilsicherheitsbeiwerte

Sickert, Jan-Uwe, Schwiteilo, Katrin, Jesse, Frank 02 December 2011 (has links) (PDF)
In the framework of a comprehensive experimental program the ultimate strength of textile reinforced concrete has been determined under consideration of uniaxial tensile load. In result varying data are available which indicate a non-deterministic (uncertain) strength. The experimental results provide a moderate basis for statistical evaluations and the quantification of uncertainty. Furthermore, manual calculation in structural design requires a certain safety distance. For this task, partial safety factors have been defined and incorporated in the design codes to ensure a predefined safety level. In this context, this paper gives suggestions for the definition of partial safety factors for textile reinforced concrete with AR glass and carbon reinforcement.

Enhanced classification approach with semi-supervised learning for reliability-based system design

Patel, Jiten 02 July 2012 (has links)
Traditionally design engineers have used the Factor of Safety method for ensuring that designs do not fail in the field. Access to advanced computational tools and resources have made this process obsolete and new methods to introduce higher levels of reliability in an engineering systems are currently being investigated. However, even though high computational resources are available the computational resources required by reliability analysis procedures leave much to be desired. Furthermore, the regression based surrogate modeling techniques fail when there is discontinuity in the design space, caused by failure mechanisms, when the design is required to perform under severe externalities. Hence, in this research we propose efficient Semi-Supervised Learning based surrogate modeling techniques that will enable accurate estimation of a system's response, even under discontinuity. These methods combine the available set of labeled dataset and unlabeled dataset and provide better models than using labeled data alone. Labeled data is expensive to obtain since the responses have to be evaluated whereas unlabeled data is available in plenty, during reliability estimation, since the PDF information of uncertain variables is assumed to be known. This superior performance is gained by combining the efficiency of Probabilistic Neural Networks (PNN) for classification and Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm for treating the unlabeled data as labeled data with hidden labels.
