From testing the water to riding the waves : new master of social work graduates' journey from student to professionalLarimer, Susan 23 July 2015 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Every year, more than 200 schools of social work graduate thousands of Master of Social Work (MSW) students. These graduates enter the world of work and continue on their journey toward becoming professional social workers. Surprisingly, very little is known in social work about the transition from student to professional, especially for MSW graduates. Related literature in nursing and education is reviewed in order to have a foundational knowledge of the transition process for similar professionals. The research questions for this study were: (a) What is the process of transition from student to employee like for new MSW graduates? (b) What are the factors that influence this transition during the first 18 months for MSW graduates? and (c) Are there critical junctures in the processes of transitioning from being a student through the first 18 months of MSW employment that are related to satisfaction and/or professional growth?
This dissertation used qualitative, constructivist grounded theory methodology in order to study this relatively unknown subject. The conceptual model that emerged in this study is called Riding the Waves, and illustrates the transition process for new graduates learning to become a professional social worker. There are five stages of this model: Testing the Waters, Jumping In, Sinking or Swimming, Treading Water, and Riding the Waves. In Testing the Waters, critical issues of finding a job, negotiating a salary and licensure are salient. In Jumping In, new graduates experience orientation, examine preparedness from school and encounter the real world of work as opposed to their expectations. In Sinking or Swimming, new graduates negotiate not knowing, supervision, dealing with emotions and difficult work situations. In Treading Water, new graduates explore finding a balance between self-care and compassion fatigue and articulate job and compassion satisfaction. In the last stage, Riding the Waves, new graduates are more stable, gain confidence, find their voice and discuss what is ahead for them. Implications for social work students, educators, and employers are discussed including better preparing students for the transition, improving orientation and supervision, and providing the support that these new professionals require and deserve.

Kan du, vill du, vågar du? : - En kvantitativ enkätstudie om gymnasieelevers kunskap om och attityder till skolkurativt arbete samt benägenhet att vända sig till skolkuratorn. / Can you, do you want to, do you dare? : - A quantitative survey about secondary students' knowledge and attitudes towards school curative work and the tendency to seek help from school counselor.Newman Hedin, Filippa, Johansson, Victoria January 2024 (has links)
Previous research has shown there is a lack of studies made about school counselors and their work with secondary school students, especially in a Swedish context. Although the research is limited, there are a few studies who can show that there is a distancing of students towards school counselors and students seeking help, but there also seems to be a lack of direction that makes school counselors work tasks to appear unclear. Previous research shows that there seem to be a few explanatory factors that may impact this behavior of students such as a lack of trust, a fear that confidentiality will be compromised as well as other people's opinions. The purpose of this study was to describe, analyze and find possible connections between secondary students' knowledge and attitudes towards school counselors and counselors' work tasks, and also secondary students' tendency to seek help. The study was carried out by a quantitative questionnaire study with focus on two different schools in two different municipalities. Empirical material was collected through google forms and participants were asked to fill out the survey online. We visited a few schools who were interested in participating in the questionnaire. The reason for this was because we had an idea of an increasing number of participants by visiting schools and informing them about this study and its purpose, and also to be able to answer any questions they might have. The results were analyzed through a univariate and a bivariate analysis and by using the Statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS). The results showed that students had a rather positive attitude towards school counselors, but still tend to not seek help if needed, which can be due to a lack of trust to the counselor.

Nationellt bedömningsstöd i matematik för anpassad grundskola : Dess påverkan på matematikutbildningen utifrån Bronfenbrenners systemteori / The national assessment support material in mathematics for compulsory school for pupils with intellectual disabilities : Its impact on mathematics education, based on Bronfenbrenner’s systems theoryChrysikou, Eirini January 2024 (has links)
This study investigates the impact of national (Swedish) assessment support in mathematics on the education of younger students in compulsory school for pupils with intellectual disabilities. Using qualitative content analysis, it investigates the preliminary teacher’s guide for implementing the described evaluation activity in first-grade classrooms, analysing a 24-page empirical material. The assessment support material, aligned with the Swedish curriculum and course syllabus for mathematics, is crucial in highlighting the relevance of the assessed knowledge. Theoretical frameworks, including Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory and the participation model, were used to explore the complexity of assessment for pupils with intellectual disabilities and how student learning is influenced by various aspects of the system. The participation model was additionally used to study the possibilities for students’ participation. The results of this study indicate that teachers’ didactical approaches are crucial in both assessment and mathematics education. While student participation is considered in the assessment support material, further adaptations by teachers are needed. The study also indicates the potential of national assessment support to improve school developing work.

Educator's knowledge of and opinions on child sexual abuseRatlhagane, Kgomotso J. 30 June 2002 (has links)
Sexual abuse of children occurs at a very high rate and most of the victims are young
children who have never been taught about the possibility of being abused. Victims of
abuse are not equipped with appropriate knowledge and vocabulary to enable them to
explain properly when they experience abuse. Acquisition of a vocabulary and
understanding of the concepts of sexuality would assist children in recognizing, resisting
and reporting sexual abuse. The young age at which abuse occurs makes the study at
primary school level important and relevant.
There is little literature on how child sexual abuse can be identified, addressed and
handled by schools or what unique role the school should play in the management of child
sexual abuse cases. Educators are in a position to identify sexually abused children
because of their close and ongoing contact with school-going children. Therefore, young
children place a great deal of trust in their teachers and look to them for protection when
they feel unsafe. Teachers are trained to observe changes in the appearance and
progress of individual children. Therefore, they can also assist in uncovering and reacting
appropriately to disclosures of abuse.
The study was conducted in poor, disadvantaged, rural primary schools in a part of the
North West Province. There is a limited access to social work services in rural areas and
therefore, educators are considered to be appropriate people to educate children about
sexual abuse issues because children spend most of their time at school. There is a
relationship between educators, parents and children which creates a proper channel of
communicating information about sexual abuse of children. That is, educators are in a
position not only to educate but also to reinforce what children have learnt at home.
Educators' role have been limited in the identification and dealing with sexual abuse cases
and therefore, there is a need to empower them with appropriate knowledge and skills to
enable them to handle sexual abuse cases at school level successfully. / Psychology / M. A. (Psychology)

Student evaluation of career readiness after completing the hospitality management curriculum at the International Hotel SchoolConradie, Ronette 02 1900 (has links)
The primary purpose of this study was to determine how the current hospitality
management curriculum at The International Hotel School contributes to students’
preparedness from their own perspectives.
Generic and curriculum specific skills that can be used for curriculum evaluation were
identified, a framework of curriculum variables to rate the level of student
preparedness was developed, the effectiveness of the hospitality management
curriculum from the perspectives of students’ perceptions of preparedness was
analysed, and the aspects that contribute most to student preparedness were
identified through a literature study and an empirical investigation.
The findings were summarised and it was recommended that The International Hotel
School needs to review the hotel and restaurant accounting course and the
experiential learning components. Furthermore, lecturers of The International Hotel
School should receive training on the implementation of more interactive course
content delivery methods. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Adult Education)

A psycho-educational perspective of parental bereavement in African adolescentsMabotja, Zolelwa Thobela 02 1900 (has links)
The study focuses on the emotional experiences of parental bereavement of African adolescents who live in a rural environment. Findings revealed that the loss of a parent is very devastating for African adolescents. The adolescents received inadequate assistance from family, peers, community members or educators. It is essential after this study to uncover ways in which these adolescents could be assisted to cope with the loss of a parent who had been providing love, care, financial and material support, as well as safety and security.
To gather data the researcher drew meaning from eight participants’ lived experiences from transcriptions of interviews with the participants. The participants, seven girls and one boy, were adolescents between the ages of twelve and fifteen years, who had lost their fathers.
This study recommended that educators be equipped to take a major role in dealing with children in bereavement, since there are no educational psychologists or other professionals based in the school or neighbourhood. The community needs to be made aware of the plight of bereaved adolescents and should be introduced into giving positive and constructive assistance to these young people. / Psychology of Education / M. Sexual activities at school : teenagers' experiences and social work supportMakhitha, Tshilidzi Stanley 02 1900 (has links)
This research study focuses on the sexual encounters of teenagers. Teenagers do not always have private intimate places of their own and tend to use school grounds, toilets and classrooms to engage in sexual activities. Recently, various newspapers published articles about teen pregnancy and sex on school grounds. The alarming rate of sexual activities at schools among South African teenagers became a driving force for the researcher to investigate this phenomenon. The goal was to develop in-depth understanding of the experiences of teenagers being engaged in sexual activities at school and social work support required.
A qualitative approach was employed following explorative, descriptive and contextual research designs. The study was conducted in the Gauteng province. Semi-structured interviews were employed to collect data. Purposive sampling was utilised. Analysis of data was conducted according to Tesch (cited in Smit, 2002) and Guba's model (cited in Shenton, 2004) was employed for data verification. / Social Work / M.A. (Social Science (Social Work))
