A place to get it all back: the cultural landscape of cottagers in Nopiming Provincial Park

Zielinski, Anjanette 09 September 2008 (has links)
Second home use or cottaging is an increasingly desirable practice across Canada. In Manitoba, cottaging sub-divisions are generally situated along lakes and rivers in the province, many of which are situated on Crown land or in provincial parks. This study explored what is meaningful about cottaging to bring about a better understanding of the importance of cottaging as a culturally meaningful social practice. The objectives of the research were to identify what makes Flanders Lake and surrounding area of Nopiming Provincial Park a meaningful place for cottagers; determine if there are shared meanings among cottagers; and consider the implications of the cultural landscape of cottagers for natural resource management. The case study research considered the sense of place that is derived from cottagers’ experiences and what specifically contributes to the significance of cottage culture in the cottaging sub-division of Flanders Lake, Manitoba. A qualitative, interpretive research design was used for data collection. Photo-elicitation also known as resident employed photography was used, whereby cottagers were asked to photograph things, places or people that represented meaningful aspects about cottaging and the surrounding area. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with individual participants to validate and triangulate perspectives. Using NVivo 7 qualitative software to manage data and elicit themes, a cultural landscape framework of cottagers was developed. Cottagers cited recreational activities, connections with people, interactions with nature and the tonic-like effects of cottaging experiences, as the most meaningful aspects of cottaging. The study showed that it is possible to determine the most meaningful aspects of a place, and that many of those attributes are shared between community members. However, dissecting those meanings into constituent parts of a collective body of shared, interrelated and sometimes dependent meanings is complex, and not always possible. Further study on the cultural landscape of additional cottaging communities and of other area stakeholders is recommended given the increasing desirability and interest in cottaging, and potential for negotiating place meanings in multiple land use areas.

Subúrbios de veraneio: condicionantes históricas, sociais, econômicas e ambientais da urbanização às margens de represas no entorno do Rio Grande (SP/MG) / Summery houses: conditionants historical, socials, economics and environmental, of the urbanization, along the perimeter of the Rio Grande, inside São Paulo and Minas Gerais States

Sara Pugliesi Larrabure 26 August 2011 (has links)
This essay approches second home issues, which propagates like ranches around the diversity of reservoirs that were created despite the hydroeletric plants in the area of Rio Grande, north of Sao Paulo and south-east of Minas Gerais, more specifically between Volta Grande and Furnas plants. The main purpose was to establish an understanding of the significance of this kind of space consumption on appropriated and orderly ways for the studied region. For this, was soughed for analyzes the different vectors that contributed to the development of the region and formed, at the fringe of the Rio Grande, large suburban areas which are willing cities economically more powerful around the area, like Franca, Ribeirão Preto and Uberaba. To make a clearly comprehension of all occurrence, besides of bibliographic information given, was necessary some fieldworks inside the studied region. Was observed that this phenomenon caused space fragmentation, because of an elite and specialized use of regional territory part, according the occupation and privatization of protected areas. The occupation along the borders have been growing dramatically. New estates were built, and the areas in the riverside are the main focus of the constructors. This study allowed us to understand that emergence of summery houses is the main urbanization prompter, and exists a action system that encourages the proliferation of these suburbs, like the expansion of urban areas, creation of social interesting zones and no supervision around there

Viklund, Rebecca January 2020 (has links)
In Sweden, people can only be registered as a citizen in one municipality while at the same time, almost half of the Swedish population have accesses to a second home. Second home owners is therefore not visible in the public statistics which causes problems for municipalities when planning since this mobile population seems to be immobile. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of second home tourism on a municipal level and how these effects are handled by a municipal organization. The municipality of Tjörn, a municipality consisting of islands on the countryside on the Swedish west coast, is used as an example to illustrate this subject. The study is based on one group interview and one personal interview with municipal workers with different professions to examine which effects they identify from the second home tourism and how they handle this in their professions. The results shows that the second home tourism in the municipality of Tjörn concerns economical, ecological, physical and social aspects plus aspects concerning the identity of the place. This in turn demands a knowledge and information from the affected municipality to be able to handle the effects in a sustainable way.

A student’s belonging in the tourist town : A case study of university students’ place belonging and community in the tourist destination Visby, Gotland

Öberg, Eva January 2023 (has links)
Tourism is a worldwide phenomenon and an important industry. In recent years, however, questions have arisen surrounding whether tourism can be harmful to destinations when exceeding their capacities. Visby is a medieval seaside town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Gotland, a Swedish island. With 900 000 annual visitors, Visby is one of the most visited destinations in the country, and tourism is an important part of the island’s economy. With the heavy flow of tourists and second homeowners in Visby, especially during summer season, signs and effects of overtourism have become prevalent. Locals in Visby are struggling with housing issues, large seasonal pressure, et cetera, affecting their livelihoods and community. One of the root causes is believed to be unsustainable tourism patterns. This thesis looks at how overtourism could affect residents’ sense of place belonging and community. Local university students at Campus Gotland were chosen as the focus group and were asked about their views on their place belonging and community in relation to consequences brought by tourism via a survey. The results show indications that tourism-related seasonal differences and housing issues may be affecting the students’ sense of place belonging and community negatively.

In the Nordic countries, second homes are usually a way to meet this demand. This new movement of peoplebecame increasingly clear on rural islands with high accessibility. Thethesis’ overarching aim is to comprehend how the COVID-19 outbreak impacted thegentrification of rural islands. The study specifically looks at the rise in second homesas a means of examining the gentrification caused by tourism on Öland. This thesismakes use of rural spatial justice, a variant on spatial justice that seeks to explain howsociety and space interact in rural areas. Through a mixed methods approach, aquantitative spatial analysis on price development of second homes, income anddensity of second homes, is supplemented with 8 qualitative interviews. The resultsconfirm the impact of COVID-19 on tourism-driven gentrification in rural islandcommunities. Furthermore, it is evident that rural settlements within rural areas arecomposed of unusually large clusters of areas with high price development, highincome, and a high number of second homes. Second homes have social effects inaddition to an impact on housing prices and the supply of available housing.Inevitably, the second home-driven tourism-induced gentrification is in some way oranother transforming Öland's neighborhoods.

Entre o turismo e o imobiliário: velhos e novos usos das segundas residências sob o enfoque da multiterritorialidade - Camocim/CE / Between tourism and real estate: old and new uses of second homes with a focus on multiterritoriality - Camocim/CE

Assis, Lenilton Francisco de 12 March 2012 (has links)
The mobility increase has incorporated new uses of the second homes that old conceptual controversies become surpassed how the blurring between leisure domiciles and tourist accommodations. Today they shelter to both the local vacationer who enjoys the weekend leisure, much as the residential tourist who buys new home in another country, which behaves as a tourist and immigrant. With the increase in travel, multiple domains (material and symbolic) are fired between the first and second homes, producing new spatial dynamics that result in multiterritoriality. Different logics of territorialization, endogenous and exogenous, begin to live together and confront in the spaces appropriate by these domiciles that have their boom linked to the increasing fusion of tourism with the real estate industry. With reference to these changes taking place in the Brazilian Northeast, the research seeks to focus on the old and new uses of second homes in Camocim Municipality (State of Ceará, Brazil) in order to understand their different logics of territorialization, whether promote the solidarity or the socio-spatial segregation. From a qualitative approach, the study examines how the beaches of the Barreiras, Maceió and Tatajuba, in Camocim, transform themselves in multiple territories of coexistence and of conflict between natives and visitors.

A segunda residência como indutora da urbanização, na contemporaneidade, em Itapema SC / The second home as an inducer of urbanization, in contemporany times, in Itapema - SC

Luiz Henrique Sedrez Correa 18 May 2015 (has links)
The second home phenomenon has spatial implications that interfere with the production and consumption of geographical space. The second housing, seen against the practice of leisure and tourism activities increasingly practiced in contemporary society, implies interests, joints and conflicts in coastal urban space. The objective of this study is to characterize the second home as an inducer of the urbanization process, in contemporary times, in the city of Itapema in the north coast of Santa Catarina. The second residence is characterized as a tourist or private accommodation used temporarily for the purpose of recreation and use of free time. So we can see the character of the property, the purpose of temporality and the bond related to the home and place as criteria for determining a second residence. The peculiarities of the coast of Santa Catarina attracted the second-home housing for leisure and vacation activities, from the 1920s the city of Itapema is one example of this trend of occupation. One of the reasons why this phenomenon has occured is because the industrial bourgeoisie of cities of Vale do Itajaí started to keep their summer residence, identified as second homes, in the coastal area. In this context, the central question is how the phenomenon of second homes has contributed to the urbanization process and the production of space in Itapema? According to data from the Demographic Census of IBGE, in 1991 there were 6,408 residences occasional use in Itapema. In 2000 this number jumped to 11,142 homes. And finally in 2010 we reached the mark of 13,547 private households used as a second residence. In twenty years there has been an increase of 111% in the number of private residences of occasional use in the city of Itapema. This highlights an intense urbanization process supported by second residences which contributed to the vertical growth and the urban density in the downtown and Meia Praia. Changes in the urban dynamics in the city of Itapema are directly related to the urbanization caused by the second residence. This phenomenon is articulated and promoted by real estate agents associated with the state, and it has increased the supply of jobs and services in the city. As a result of that, there was a gradual increase of the resident population in recent decades (2000: 25869 inhabitants; 2010: 45797 inhab.). Summer seasons are still significantly changing the pace of the city. However, from the 2000s the city has trade and service activities throughout the year. Thus, there is intense pressure on urban infrastructure and legislation that regulates the growth of the city
