Secretti, Tatiani January 2009 (has links)
Introduction: The number of deceases by homicides are high, numbers that are even higher mainly in big cities in Brazil. For the media and the public opinion, the homicides that are linked to the usage and commerce of drugs are the scariest and most apparent situation of urban violence. Objectives: In this context, this research had as a goal the analysis of the profile and standards of the distribution of the homicides victims in Porto Alegre in 2007, trying to identify the most sensitive areas, i. e., areas where the number of homicides were even higher, and to know the social and economic characteristics of those areas. Methods: Transversal study of the homicides cases that happened in Porto Alegre in 2007. A descriptive study and Kernel spatial analysis were done, to measure the distribution of the residences of the victims of homicides and to identify the population density. Observing the rates of homicides, the neighborhoods were grouped and compared according to their social and economic characteristics. Results: The majority of the victims were young male. The age group that was higher was the one from 20 to 29 years old (young adults). Concerning the basic causes of death, the fire weapon was the most used means to commit homicides. It was possible to identify environmentally sensitive areas, with a higher number of homicides, in regions where there are illegal settlements, with precarious conditions. It was verified the existence of an expansions homicides route in the direction of the north of the city. Besides, it was observed that the group of neighborhoods with the highest rates of homicides presented the worst social and economic conditions. Conclusions: It was identified sensitive violent regions in Porto Alegre, with a high concentration of homicides victims. A program for reduction and prevention of homicides could be thought for those areas. In this way, it is possible to point out the best places for public security support unities, so that the available resources and services can be evaluated and, so, having optimized investments. The population that live in those sensitive areas could be, in this way, benefited by a better and higher control and security.

The development and evolution of vertebrate oxygen-sensing cells

Hockman, Dorit January 2014 (has links)
Oxygen-sensing cells release neurotransmitters, including serotonin, in response to hypoxia in the blood or surrounding air/water. This stimulates the glossopharyngeal and/or vagal nerves, triggering increased ventilation via the respiratory reflex. In the adult, they are located in the carotid body (glomus cells) and lung epithelia (pulmonary neuroendocrine cells) of amniotes, and in the epithelia of the gills and orobranchial cavity (‘neuroepithelial cells’) of anamniotes. Despite their physiological importance, little is known about the molecular mechanisms of their development, while the evolutionary relationships between the various oxygen-sensing cell types are unknown. The chromaffin cells of the mammalian adrenal medulla are hypoxia-sensitive transiently during neonatal life. Both carotid body glomus cells and adrenal chromaffin cells arise from the neural crest and require the transcription factors Phox2b and Ascl1 for their development. Given these similarities, I aimed to test the hypothesis that the same molecular mechanisms underlie their development. Expression analysis of 13 sympathoadrenal pathway genes throughout chicken carotid body development revealed striking similarities with adrenal chromaffin cell development. Analysis of mouse mutants showed that the transcription factors Hand2, Sox4 and Sox11 are required for carotid body development. In addition, loss of the receptor tyrosine kinase Ret or the transcription factor AP-2β, which significantly affects sympathetic ganglion but not adrenal chromaffin cell development, has no effect on the carotid body. Adrenal chromaffin cells differentiate from neurons that migrate into the adrenal gland from ‘primary’ sympathetic ganglia at the dorsal aorta. Carotid body glomus cells were previously proposed to arise from neuronal “émigrés” from neighbouring ganglia: the superior cervical ganglion in mammals and the nodose ganglion in the chick. However, nodose neurons are considered to be nodose placode-derived. Using electroporation and grafting in the chick, I confirmed that the nodose placode does not contribute to the carotid body, identified a small population of autonomic neural crest-derived neurons in the nodose ganglion, and confirmed the existence of “bridges” of neurons between the nodose ganglion and the carotid body. My data suggest that, like adrenal chromaffin cells, carotid body glomus cells differentiate from autonomic neural crest-derived neurons in nearby ganglia, which migrate into the carotid body primordium and down-regulate neuronal markers. The proposed evolutionary relationship between the carotid body glomus cells and the serotonin-positive neuroepithelial cells of anamniote gills has never been tested. Using vital dye labelling, neural fold grafts, genetic lineage-tracing in zebrafish and analysis of zebrafish mutants lacking all neural crest cells, I found that serotonin-positive cells in the gills and orobranchial epithelia of lamprey (jawless fish), zebrafish (ray-finned bony fish) and frog (anamniote tetrapod) are not neural crest-derived, and hence are not homologous to carotid body glomus cells. Genetic lineage-tracing in mouse and neural fold grafts in chick also confirmed that serotonin-positive neuroendocrine cells in the lung are not neural crest- derived, hence must have an endodermal origin (since the lungs are out-pocketings of the gut). My results suggest that the neuroepithelial cells of anamniotes are not related to carotid body glomus cells, but rather are homologous to the oxygen-sensing cells of the lung. Consistent with this hypothesis, I found that many genes expressed during carotid body development are not expressed by the epithelia of either chick lungs or lamprey gills. Taken together, my data suggest that as air-breathing evolved, gut endoderm- derived cells that originally responded to hypoxia in water were maintained in the lungs to monitor oxygen levels in air, while a population of neural crest-derived chromaffin cells near the pharyngeal arch arteries was recruited to monitor oxygen levels in blood.

Locality Sensitive Indexing for Efficient High-Dimensional Query Answering in the Presence of Excluded Regions

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: Similarity search in high-dimensional spaces is popular for applications like image processing, time series, and genome data. In higher dimensions, the phenomenon of curse of dimensionality kills the effectiveness of most of the index structures, giving way to approximate methods like Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH), to answer similarity searches. In addition to range searches and k-nearest neighbor searches, there is a need to answer negative queries formed by excluded regions, in high-dimensional data. Though there have been a slew of variants of LSH to improve efficiency, reduce storage, and provide better accuracies, none of the techniques are capable of answering queries in the presence of excluded regions. This thesis provides a novel approach to handle such negative queries. This is achieved by creating a prefix based hierarchical index structure. First, the higher dimensional space is projected to a lower dimension space. Then, a one-dimensional ordering is developed, while retaining the hierarchical traits. The algorithm intelligently prunes the irrelevant candidates while answering queries in the presence of excluded regions. While naive LSH would need to filter out the negative query results from the main results, the new algorithm minimizes the need to fetch the redundant results in the first place. Experiment results show that this reduces post-processing cost thereby reducing the query processing time. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Computer Science 2016

The TV News, the main program of the broadcasting station, brings dialy the most important social, economic and politic news of Brazil and the world, under a syncretic discourse format, composed by the coupling of the sound, visual, verbal and gestual languages. Our hypothesis is that the TV News has a specific presence mode because of its syncretic enonciation, which articulates elements of the pragmatics and cognitive dimensions and especially the passional (or pathemics). This way, the TV News is a semiotic object that makes itself to be and to feel, sensorially and somatically, present to the TV watcher. Our corpus is the Jornal Nacional, main brazilian TV News broadcasted by Rede Globo. To study the syncretic enonciation and the meaning produced by it we will make use, at first, of the thesis the media is the message, according to McLuhan (1971), that will help us to evidence the TV affluents. Then, we will make use of the semiotic recent development, especially, the sensitive experiences semiotics, according to Landowski (2001).

For this purpose, several Works of the philosopher were consulted, highlighting the Phenomenology of Perception. Taking as a starting point the sensitive experience, structured by the relation between the body itself and the world, whose developments attest the carnal interconnection between them. This relationship is marked by an expressive fecundity which pulsates in each part of the carnal tissue and mobilizes the body in the invention of the ways of significations, by which the meaning of the sensitive experience is culturally conveyed. This expressive fecundity deflagrates an aesthetic logos, a knowledge, initially mute, which emerges in the sensitive experience and is uttered in the activity of the body itself. The ways of expression, in particular the language and the pictorial art , are prototypes of this dialectical exercise by which the meaning of the sensitive experience fecundates the activity of the various actors in the world of life.

The current study has been carried out in a maracatu percussive group in the city of Piracicaba, state of São Paulo. We work with a research as experience approach to make a cartography of the connections between the potencies of the body and the production of subjectivity in the fields of art and culture, as well as its unfoldings for a sensitive education. In this perspective, we assume that a sensible education goes through ethical, poetical and political issues and that these fluxes create modes of existence (DELEUZE, 2010). Such fluxes vibrate into the body-art of the brincantes of maracatu. The anthropophagy characteristic of the brazilian culture, bring us symbolic elements that invite us to think on educative experimentations that can produce cheerful encounters with the knowledge.

This Company was chosen intentionally to give us elements in their creations to interrogate the understanding of the body and sensitive. Thus, as we launch issues in this dissertation: that body dance in Grupo Corpo? And as we can see, a phenomenological approach, an understanding of the body and sensitive works in that company? Building on this, the works are to be questioned Benguel? (1998/2003), Lecuona (2004) and Onqot? (2005). It is intended, through these works, coreological approaching the discourse of philosophical discourse and give movement to phenomenological thought of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, in special the sensitive, flesh of the body, the investment in the sensory world as a merger, calling the know body and its power to take chances, to incorporate the world, language, culture, create and choose. Thus, these openings is where thought enters this research. This consistency, we used the phenomenological attitude of Maurice Merleau-Ponty as a methodological approach, since in their study the philosopher takes a look expressive on the body, forming a sensitive language that is expressed in the movements, which deepens the arguments of the Phenomenology a new arrangement for knowledge as a result of our experience in the lived world. The reflections presented here aim to take us to the amazement, the unthinking, whom many still impose epistemological challenges, including understanding the body of knowledge and sensitive / Nesta pesquisa, convidamos ? reflex?o por um olhar fenomenol?gico sobre o corpo, atrav?s da descri??o de algumas obras da Companhia brasileira de dan?a contempor?nea Grupo Corpo. Danças circulares sagradas : pedagogia da presença, do ritmo, da escuta e olhar sensíveis

Barcellos, Janete Teresinha da Silva January 2012 (has links)
This study seeks to give visibility to the being-together-dancing in the Sacred Circle Dances, meetings and meanings constructed by Dancing Bodies in the living of the group and outside it. Through interviews and speeches of nine Dancing group Sacred Circle Dances George Black Community Center of the Municipal Secretary of Sports Recreation and Leisure, participants in this study, we observed the exercise of looking and listening sensitive. In the practice of the presence and rhythm, the perception of error, definitely as a process inherent in dance-along in the circle. To form a reflective space in the group, used the Letters of Way, representing the emotions and feelings arising from this dynamic, complex and multidimensional contact Dancing Bodies with vitalism expressed by this being-together-dancing. However to achieve this way, it was necessary to dive into the tracks and masters of the Sacred Circle Dances, their relations with the Sacred, its Myths and Symbols, drawing a parallel with my personal history and the paths that led me to research. To do so, I sought the support of Maffesoli theoretically, from the perspective of a being-together-sensitive and supportive, in view of the complexity of Morin and designing its own body of Merleau-Ponty. Many others have contributed to the reflective density, but it was the testimony and statements of Dancing that allowed me to go further with a view to the sensitive pedagogy, where the pace, look and listen sensitive were present.
