Spiritual Art: evoking the numinous using a 3D computer game engine

Nelson, Christopher January 2007 (has links)
The Seven Valleys is an interactive 3D installation based artwork inspired by mystical writings of the Bahá'í Faith. Created as a modification of the firstperson shooter Unreal Tournament 2003 (Epic, 2003) it subverts the original paradigm of the game to create an experience of the numinous, which in spirit, is diametrically opposed to the original intent of the gameplay design. This artwork presents an exploration of, and allusion to, the often subtle and illusive concepts found in the sacred treatise The Seven Valleys (Bahá'u'lláh, 1991) in which the user engages in an experiential journey through the work. The user is faced with conditions and situations that provide motivation to question, explore and attempt to fathom the abstract sense of the numinous. Each of The Seven Valleys contains its own individual mysteries while at the same time contributing its part to the telling of a collective story. / Master of Arts

From Midden to Sieve: The Impact of Differential Recovery and Quantification Techniques on Interpretations of Shellfish Remains in Australian Coastal Archaeology

Jenkins, Robyn Unknown Date (has links)
Experimental mechanical sieving methods are applied to samples of shellfish remains from three sites in southeast Queensland, Seven Mile Creek Mound, Sandstone Point and One-Tree, to test the efficacy of various recovery and quantification procedures commonly applied to shellfish assemblages in Australia. There has been considerable debate regarding the most appropriate sieve sizes and quantification methods that should be applied in the recovery of vertebrate faunal remains. Few studies, however, have addressed the impact of recovery and quantification methods on the interpretation of invertebrates, specifically shellfish remains. In this study, five shellfish taxa representing four bivalves (Anadara trapezia, Trichomya hirsutus, Saccostrea glomerata, Donax deltoides) and one gastropod (Pyrazus ebeninus) common in eastern Australian midden assemblages are sieved through 10mm, 6.3mm and 3.15mm mesh. Results are quantified using MNI, NISP and weight. Analyses indicate that different structural properties and pre- and postdepositional factors affect recovery rates. Fragile taxa (T. hirsutus) or those with foliated structure (S. glomerata) tend to be overrepresented by NISP measures in smaller sieve fractions, while more robust taxa (A. trapezia and P. ebeninus) tend to be overrepresented by weight measures. Results demonstrate that for all quantification methods tested a 3mm sieve should be used on all sites to allow for regional comparability and to effectively collect all available information about the shellfish remains.

Χαμπέρη, Γεωργία 07 June 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is the construction of a passenger elevator in a small scale. The work was conducted in the Laboratory of Electromechanical Energy Conversion, in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Patras. The main aim is the study and the construction of the miniature of an elevator for transporting persons, whose function will be controlled through printed circuit boards. Initially, there is a brief overview of the history and the main parts of elevators, along with the various categories in which they are divided. Secondly, the construction of three-phase asynchronous motors, their types and the principle of their operation are described. In addition, there is a short description of the microprocessor which is used and its capabilities, in order to facilitate the study and design of the structure. Furthermore, the logic of the elevator, the elements which are necessary to implement the above logic and how to connect them to the pins of the two microcontrollers are given. For easier implementation of the logic which was adopted, two printed circuits were designed and manufactured. The first circuit controls all the elements that exist inside the cabin, and the second controls the call buttons on every floor, the proximity sensors and the relays which drive the motor. Moreover, there is a brief reference to the CAN network which is used for the communication of the microcontrollers. The full flow chart of the code and the schematics of the printed-circuit boards are also provided. Finally, the conclusions that derive from the construction and the operation of the elevator are presented and future improvements concerning the construction are proposed.

Propuesta de aplicación de conceptos de manufactura esbelta a una línea de producción de Costura de una empresa de confecciones de tejido de punto para exportación / Proposal to apply lean manufacturing concepts to a sewing production line in a knit-wear exporting business

Carvallo Munar, Edgardo Gabriel 19 August 2014 (has links)
This article presents a proposal for applying lean manufacturing concepts to a sewing production line from a typical apparel company that produces knit garments for export, in order to reduce lead time, in-process inventory and processing delays. Using value stream map and seven wastes approach, the paper presents and analyzes the current configuration of a typical sewing line, identifying the most important wastes throughout the process. It proposes a lean production system consisting of five elements, aimed at reducing the main factors of waste caused by the conventional production system: a) reducing the size of the line, b) implementation of a unit production system), c) implementation of a line-controlled load system (pull system), d) implementation of group incentives, and e) increasing delivery frequency of outgoing garments to finishing department. As a result, the proposed model is able to reduce lead time, cycle time, in-process inventory and unnecessary movements.

Mozart

Dalla Costa, Fábio Cirilo Santos January 2010 (has links)
The present work deals with the Concerto in C Major for Flute and Harp K299 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The main objective was the transcription of the Harp part of the concerto for a seven-string guitar. Through comparative analysis of transcriptions made by the composer himself, along with further reading, the necessary procedures to accomplish this transcription were identified and classified. They are: range compression, suppression of notes, change in the disposition of notes and the transference of accompaniment material from the harp part to the orchestra. Such procedures agree with an idiomatic and musical adaptation for the target instrument, while remaining accurate to the original work. It was concluded that the transcription of a work must be based on an applied methodology that define the guidelines and adapt the original compositional idiom to the personal choices of the transcriber.
