Tid för film : Introduktion av konceptet diegetisk tid genom en jämförande analys av filmerna The Magnificent Seven och The Wild Bunch. / Time for Film : Introduction of the concept of diegetic time through a comparative analysis of the films The Magnificent Seven and The Wild Bunch.

Askerfjord, Christer January 2016 (has links)

Parallelizable manifold compactifications of D=11 Supergravity

Goranci, Roberto January 2016 (has links)
In this thesis we present solutions of spontaneous compactifications of D=11, N=1 supergravity on parallelizable manifolds S^1, S^3 and S^7. In Freund-Rubin compactifications one usually obtains AdS vacua in 4D, these solutions usually sets the fermionic VEV's to zero. However giving them non zero VEV's allows us to define torsion given by the fermionic bilinears that essentially flattens the geometry giving us a vanishing cosmological constant on M_4. We further give an analysis of the consistent truncation of the bosonic sector of D=11 supergravity on a S^3 manifold and relate this to other known consistent truncation compactifications. We also consider the squashed S^7 where we check for surviving supersymmetries by analyzing the generalised holonomy, this compactification is of interest in phenomenology.

An Evaluation of the Short-Term Embryo-Larval and Seven-Day Larval Test Methods for Estimating Chronic Toxicity of Zinc to the Fathead Minnow (Pimephales promelas)

Stewart, Susan Michels 05 1900 (has links)
Chronic toxicity of zinc to Pimephales promelas was estimated by conducting replicate static and static-renewal short-term embryo-larval tests and static-renewal seven-day larval tests. The two test methods were highly reproducible. Daily renewal of test solutions had little effect on the toxicity of zinc, however, the stage of development at which exposure was initiated affected the sensitivity of the toxic endpoints measured. The most sensitive and reproducible endpoint in the embryo-larval tests was survival of viable (non-deformed) larvae and in the seven-day larval test was growth of the larvae, which was slightly more sensitive than the embryo-larval test endpoint. The estimated MATC of 0.18 and 0.15 mg/L mean total and mean soluble zinc, respectively, compared well with published results. Because of its advantages and similar sensitivity, the short-term embryo-larval test was recommended for estimating chronic toxicity.

Reinterpreting Hieronymus Bosch's Table Top of the Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Things through the Seven Day Prayers of the Devotio Moderna

Hwang, Eunyoung 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis examines Hieronymus Bosch's Table Top of the Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Things. Instead of using an iconographical analysis, the thesis investigates the relationship between Bosch's art and the Devotio Moderna, which has been speculated by many Bosch scholars. For this reason, a close study was done to examine the Devotio Moderna and its influence on Bosch's painting. Particular interest is paid to the seven day prayers of the Devotio Moderna, the subjects depicted in Bosch's painting, how Bosch's painting blesses its viewer during the time of one's prayer, and how the use of gaze ties all of these ideas together.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder's Apocalyptic Fortitude

Burris, Suzanne Lynn 12 1900 (has links)
This thesis examines Pieter Bruegel the Elder's Fortitude, 1560, a print from the Seven Virtues series. Fortitude stands out as an anomaly within the cycle because it contains several allusions to the Book of Revelation. The linkage of Fortitude to the writings of St. John is important because it challenges previous iconographic and iconological analyses of the composition. Analysis of Fortitude's compositional elements is provided, along with an examination of the virtue tradition. Additionally, an exploration of sixteenth-century apocalypticism is included, as well as an examination of the artistic influences that may have inspired Bruegel. This thesis concludes that Fortitude's apocalyptic allusions do not seem unusual for an artist familiar with St. John's prophecies, influenced by Hieronymus Bosch, and living in an age of apocalypticism.

This research intention specifically examines the voice of the character Manuela Paula Ferreira in The House of the Seven Women (2002), a contemporary historical novel creation by the brazilian Leticia Wierzchowski (1972). This analysis in the related novel is a way to meditate the transgressor´s position of the focus character, who in the context presents a muted and dissonante voice, that could mean the patriarcal system resistance in the XIX TH Century. Bakhtin´s (1988) discursive studies is the generic basis of this research, so essential theory for the survey to reveal Manoela´s state of prison feelings also in her perspectives from the social reflections, the rules , the politics until in the War and her thematic objective reminiscences in love with Giuseppe Garibaldi character. So the research seeks to carry out a detailed study toward the inward and critical diary in which the character Manoela wrote her confidences in order to understand herself own voice and her social behavior. For the analysis of this diary, this search also supports in the concepts of narration (GENETTE, 1979) and the memory (SPERBER, 2009), which allow to cover all the transgressive matter implied in it; in terms of civility, of the exclusion and social possible identities emphasizes (DELEUZE, 1995) like an answer of the authoritarian discourses. Finally, this cooperation intends to discuss the popular tradition "Bride of Garibaldi", which took shape after Giusepe Garibaldi dedicated to Manuela some lines of his memories. Then this research expectancy is also to contribute with the understanding of this historical figure and her role in the War of the Clutches/ Guerra dos Farrapos.

Corrosion of Post-Tensioning Strands in Ungrouted Ducts - Unstressed Condition

Hutchison, Michael John 01 January 2013 (has links)
Recent failures and severe corrosion distress of post-tensioned (PT) bridges in Florida have revealed corrosion of the 7-wire strands in tendons. Post-tensioned duct assemblies are fitted with multiple 7-wire steel strands and ducts are subsequently filled with grout. During construction, the length of time from the moment in which the strands have been inserted into the ducts, until the ducts are grouted, is referred to as the `ungrouted' period. During this phase, the steel strands are vulnerable to corrosion and consequently the length of this period is restricted (typically to 7 days) by construction guidelines. This investigation focuses on determining the extent of corrosion that may take place during that period, but limited to strands that were in the unstressed condition. Visual inspections and tensile testing were used to identify trends in corrosion development. Corrosion induced cracking mechanisms were also investigated via wire bending and metallographic cross section evaluation. Corrosion damage on unstressed strands during ungrouted periods of durations in the order of those otherwise currently prescribed did not appear to seriously degrade mechanical performance as measured by standardized tests. However the presence of stress in the ungrouted period, as is normally the case, may activate other mechanisms (e.g., EAC) that require further investigation. As expected in the unstressed condition, no evidence of transverse cracking was observed.

The invisible dance : persistence of the Turkish harem in Oscar Wilde's Salomé

Tarlaci, Fatma 29 November 2010 (has links)
Various representations of the figure of Salomé and the Biblical legend have been produced in the European, specifically in the English literature and arts throughout the nineteenth century. Oscar Wilde’s 1891 dramatic version of the legend in many ways epitomizes the full potential of the legend and capitalizes on the period’s fascination with the Orient. The climax of the orientalism of the play, the Dance of the Seven Veils, offers a unique reflection on European fantasies about the harem and invites a comparison to Ottoman representations of this same cultural space. This project seeks to analyze the relation between the Dance of the Seven Veils as presented by Wilde, and the figure of dancing woman in the harem of the Ottoman Empire. It is the slippage between the two which has informed various representations of the Oriental female figure in the West. The gap that emerges between the Western representations and the real practices in the harem, allows for a focused critique of Orientalist practices while recovering, in some ways, the actual experience of Muslim women. The vision of the harem that the Dance of the Seven Veils in Wilde’s Salomé offers is informed not by an actual encounter, but by the image of the harem as understood in nineteenth century English culture. At the same time, it participates in Victorian feminist debates on liberating the oppressed harem woman from her veils, her sexualization, and her objectification. Ultimately the dance functions as a reaffirmation of conventional gender roles as understood in Victorian society. / text

Swift and bold : the 60th Regiment and warfare in North America, 1755-1765

Marston, Daniel P. January 1997 (has links)
The 60th Royal American Regiment was raised in an attempt to combine the qualities of a frontiersman and a trained soldier. This paper presents an in-depth look at the conditions which revealed a need to meet the challenges of frontier warfare. The specialized training, outfitting, and tactical education of this regiment, its performance in battle situations, and its ensuing impact on training and tactics throughout the army are all considered. / The primary focus of this paper is the Royal American Regiment's performance in North America in the battles of the Seven Year's War, and above all its decisive involvement in the Pontiac Rebellion. Discussion of these engagements presents the thesis that the Royal American Regiment was at the forefront of a movement in training reform that helped add a new dimension to the British Army.
