"Frozen Tears" : A Study of Representaions of Masculinity in Three Egyptian Movies

Hewidy, Nesma January 2023 (has links)
This thesis examines representations of masculinity in the following Egyptian movies: El Badla (2018), Welad Rizk 2 (2019) and Taymour w Shafika (2007). Each movie is from a different genre to further explore how this may influence the constructed representation of masculinity. The genres are comedy, action and romance. Additionally, both El Badla and Welad Rizk 2 are among the top ten highest grossing movies in the history of Egyptian cinema. Whilst Taymour w Shafika is considered one of the most iconic romance movies in its era. Thus, it is inevitable that all these movies have been watched (and will be watched) by a large audience, hence it is crucial to study the constructed values within them as arguably they influence the society. The thesis studies Egyptian masculinity using two different methods: film analysis and interviews with Egyptian men. The main theories this paper applies are: active audience encoding/decoding theory, social role theory and social identity and self- categorization theories. All three movies were found to represent masculinity through traditional traits e.g. emotionless, family provider. Egyptian men reflected on some of the scenes and had varied perspectives on the matter. Men who did not agree with certain values in those representations did mention that they still have to follow them as it is the way they have been brought up. The results of this study cannot be generalized but it is a step forward in the research on representation of masculinities in Egyptian cinema, which is extremely under researched in comparison to the size of the film industry in Egypt.

Johansen, Suzie, Jurcevic, Kristina January 2015 (has links)
Abstract The purpose of this paper is to highlight children’s thoughts regarding issues of society and politics. Our paper is qualitative and we´ve used both a focus group and several individual interviews. We were inspired by previous research in which children, as citizens, are in focus. We also used UNCRC article 12 in order to increase the legitimacy of our study. The thesis has been based on political theory, socialization, gender and other-directed. We have received results from groups and individuals perspective that strengthen children as thinking individuals without legal capacity. Although children do not use adult speech, they have opinions and are influenced by the society they live in. The group of children we listened to didn´t know much about political parties, they did, however, know about poverty, Ebola and charity. They had problems naming the leaders of political parties, but could tell us how they perceived the school-environment and suggested improvements while we interviewed them. We´ve tried to capture the essence of the childrens words in their perspective.

Direktörer i diadem : En studie kring hur genusroller och stereotyper påverkarkarriärvägar och ledarskap inom företagsvärlden

Brommels, Vilma, Bäcklund, Josephine January 2024 (has links)
Title: Directors in Diadems - A Study on How Gender Roles and Stereotypes Affect Career Paths and Leadership in the Corporate World Level: Student thesis, Final Assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration Authors: Vilma Brommels and Josephine Bäcklund Supervisor: Monika Wallmon Date: 2023 - January Aim: The aim of this study is to explore perceptions and expectations placed on men and women in leading positions within the corporate world, with a particular focus on how these perceptions and expectations are rooted in and influenced by gender roles according to Social role theory and Edgar Schein's career anchor theory. Method: Mixed method approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative techniques, with an emphasis on the qualitative part. A mixed-method approach has been employed, and the empirical data have been collected through both surveys and interviews with tenindividuals holding leadership positions. Results and conclusions: The study emphasizes that women, to a greater extent than men, feel the need to assert themselves and fight harder in the workplace. This confirms how social expectations and stereotypes create an environment where women feel compelled to overperform to achieve the same level of recognition as men. The study highlights how homosociality (the tendency to choose individuals similar to oneself) plays a significant role in the recruitment process. This phenomenon contributes to men being more often chosen for leadership positions, reinforcing gender differences in leadership. The study addresses that women generally need to demand higher salaries and not shy away from negotiations. Gender pay gaps are unmotivated and unfair since womenare offered a lower salary for the same work. It was found that women tend to gravitate towards the career anchor "sense of service," while men lean towards "lifestyle". This may reflect and reinforce traditional gender-specific expectations that influence career choices and development The study provides an in-depth analysis of how gender roles and stereotypes affect careerpaths and leadership within the corporate world, with special focus on gender-related expectations, wage disparities, recruitment biases, and the impact of career anchors. These insights are critical for understanding and challenging the prevailing norms that contribute to gender differences in leadership and professional development. Contribution of the thesis: Provides a theoretical contribution by combining Edgar Schein´s career anchor theory with Social role theory, offering a deeper understanding of the interplay between gender roles and motivations in career development. Practically, the study contributes insights for leadership and personnel development, by demonstrating how organizations can create more inclusive work environments that consider the impact of gender roles on career choices, which in turn can lead to increased job satisfaction and productivity. Suggestions for future research: Recommends exploring the differences and similarities in career choices between managers and employees through a more extensive selection. Such a study could provide deeper insight into how career anchors affect gender distribution in leadership positions. The existing research design, which combines career anchor theory with Social role theory, is robust and well-suited for continued testing in larger studies. Also suggests exploring the interaction between the principles of care ethics and leadership as well as career development. A continued study could include a theoretical basis around "Ethics of Care," which emphasizes relational and situationally adapted approaches. Particular focus should be placed on how ethics of care can impact career advancement and gender dynamics within various professional contexts, which would enrich understanding and contribute to the development of more inclusive work environments.

Sex-based differences in adolescents’ accuracy in perceiving and acceptance of parental socialisation values

Rebello, Steven Paul 11 1900 (has links)
The current study examined whether there are sex-based differences in adolescents’ accuracy in perceiving and acceptance of parental socialisation values. Together with their parents, a total of 134 adolescents (aged 13 to 18) from private Christian schools in Johannesburg, South Africa participated in the study. After creating the measures of overall accuracy, overall acceptance, specific accuracy and specific acceptance, a series of mixed-design ANOVAs were conducted in order to evaluate the six research hypotheses. The results illustrated that there may be sex-based differences in adolescents’ accuracy in perceiving the importance that their mothers and fathers place on the value of power as a socialisation value. However, the overall results suggested that the focus on the effect of adolescent sex on adolescents’ accuracy in perceiving and acceptance of parental socialisation values was too narrow because various parent sex and adolescent sex interaction effects were found. Furthermore, there is no clear pattern indicating how sex influences adolescents’ accuracy in perceiving and acceptance of parental socialisation values, thus suggesting that the influence of sex is value-specific. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology: Research Consultation)

Breaking the Bank : A study of career barriers among women in the commercial banking sector.

Jonsson, Matilda, Jangren, Wilma January 2022 (has links)
Background - Women are underrepresented in top management positions all over the globe. This also applies to Sweden, despite the country's long progressive and high material prosperity. This situation is particularly evident in the banking sector, where women represent approximately half of the workforce. However, in the four largest banks in Sweden, women only occupy 33,25 percent in the highest management teams and 34,5 percent on the boards. This phenomenon is often referred to as “the glass ceiling,” a set of barriers that hinder women’s accessibility to top management positions. This underrepresentation is, in turn, likely to result in a loss of potential human resources due to organizations not searching for competent candidates in approximately half of the population. Further, banks are associated with a lot of power in the society, where they have a significant impact, with a critical role in the economy, contributing to financial growth. Initiatives by for instance the EU Commission to increase gender diversity are on the high agenda. Consequently, the subject of understanding and overcoming these barriers stands high on the agenda of both politicians and researchers. Purpose - The purpose of this study is to identify barriers among women toward reaching top management positions in the commercial banking sector, as well as how women in top management positions have overcome them. By investigating the barriers and how women overcome them, we will contribute with a deeper understanding and meaningful insights to political and managerial practitioners on how they can identify and help women overcome the barriers. The foundation of the theoretical framework in this study will be based on Becker’s (1957) theory of discrimination, Social role theory, and System justification theory will lay the foundation of the theoretical framework in this study. Method - This study is based on qualitative research with a multiple case study in the banking sector in Sweden. Conclusion - We conclude that the most common barriers are based on stereotypical beliefs, the balance between private life and work, biases and discrimination, and organizational culture and structure. How to overcome these barriers is built on supporting organizations, an equal private life situation, and specifically identified personality traits.

“You play like a girl” : An investigation of the gender-typing of Esports as well as the effect of gender stereotypes on player performances / "Du spelar som en tjej" : En undersökning av könsstereotypningen av Esport samt effekterna av könsstereotyper på spelarprestationer

Shaw, Kevin January 2021 (has links)
Purpose and research questions: The purpose of this study has been to critically examine Esports through a gender perspective. The study therefore investigated the gender-typing of Esports and if these stereotypes affect players’ performance. The research questions were: Do players gender-type Esports to be a neutral, feminine, or masculine sport? Do gender stereotypes in Esports affect female players’ performance? Do gender stereotypes in Esports affect male players’ performance? Method: A quantitative research design was used, and two different surveys were sent out to respondents. Both surveys contained the exact same information and questions on the first page. These were aimed at answering questions regarding gender-typing (i.e. if the respondents perceived Esports to be a neutral, feminine or masculine activity and how appropriate they perceived Esports to be for women respectively men). The survey’s second page had identical questions on both surveys, however the respondents got to see different texts of information (stereotypes) depending on which survey they participated in. The first survey (Group 1) included two different conditions groups (women = stereotype threat; men = stereotype lift) and primed the respondents with the stereotype that “women are inferior to men in Esports”. The second survey (Group 2) also included two different condition groups (men = stereotype threat; women = stereotype boost) and primed the respondents with the alternative stereotype manipulation that “women are equally as good as men in Esports”. After participating in the surveys, the respondents played three games of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive that were then analyzed against the respondents’ three most recent matches before partaking in the study. As such, the players’ performance could be evaluated and a result could be determined (i.e. either an improvement or impairment in performance). A control group (Group 3) that did not partake in the surveys was used as a reference group and to evaluate the participants’ performances. As a total, 290 persons participated in the study, of which 50 were women and 240 men. Results: The results showed that the players perceived Esports to be more of a masculine sport. For the stereotype effects on players’ performance, an ANOVA of the results showed that stereotype threat had a statistically significant effect on female players’ performance (p = .008), whereas stereotype boost did not. For the men, the results showed that neither stereotype threat nor lift had any statistically significant effect on male players’ performance. Conclusion: The findings suggest that players gender-type different aspects of Esports in different ways. The participants perceived Esports to be more of a masculine activity but on the other hand to be almost equally as appropriate for women and men. As a whole, the respondents perceived Esports to be more of a masculine sport than neutral or feminine. The findings from this study also suggest that women in Esports are more affected by gender stereotypes than men are, and that negative gender stereotypes about women’s ability may impair female players’ performance. Finally, the findings suggest that the awareness as well as the occurrence of gender stereotypes in Esports are widespread among players. However, players in Esports consider themselves to not fully endorse these stereotypes but believe that other players do, especially the negative stereotypes about women’s ability in Esports. This finding generates an interesting area for further research and investigation.
