Rodrigues, Mylena Moreira 03 December 2015 (has links)
This master thesis aims to investigate from oral sources (interviews), where and by whom the country music social areas have been frequented as well as the experiences and way of life of these people who now live in the cities. So, it has the intention to survey the current songwritings taken as "hillbillies", especially those written people who lived in the countryside and now live in Uberlândia. We intend to investigate, how the practitioners of country music in the city see music nowadays, taking into account songs commercialization and what they have been "imposing" regarding the modernization of it. The investigation understand country music as a social practice. So, it is of great importance these hillbillies experiences of life to understand the continuities and / or breakages that country music has undergone over the past few years. The research starts from the idea of how "social practices," which carry meanings, feelings and values for people who practice it in the city, give shape and meaning to country music today.

The legacies of urban development on forest distribution, composition, and its relevance for improving equity

Lindsay Elaine Darling (17598195) 14 December 2023 (has links)

The distribution of people and infrastructure in North American cities is not random, nor is it equitable. Minoritized communities often have less access to trees and forests and to the benefits that they provide. This pattern has developed over centuries. North American cities were built on indigenous land, and the location of rivers, wetlands, forests, and prairies influenced where houses were built, factories erected, parks sited, and where natural areas were preserved. As people moved to cities, wealthier individuals could afford to buy homes in places that they found more desirable. These places often were near parks or lakes and often had more trees. Less wealthy people could only afford homes in places that had less green infrastructure and places that were nearer to environmental harms like polluting industries. Unfortunately, in the United States, wealth is associated with race, meaning that from an early time its cities were segregated. As cities expanded and migration from the Jim Crow South and immigration from Eastern Europe increased, these wealthier, whiter communities restricted non-white people from moving into them with racist covenants and through redlining, deepening segregation. In this dissertation, I explored how this ecological and social history affected the ecology of a metropolitan region’s forests, and how that related to who gets to experience them. I also showed how the associations between socio-demographic variables and tree canopy varied across an urban to exurban region. Finally, I identified barriers to requesting and planting trees that residents experience and strategies that may help governments and strategies that may help overcome them. I found that communities of color had less access to forests that have a higher capacity to provide ecosystem services; that while segregation existed in urban, suburban, and exurban communities, canopy inequity did not; and that managing existing trees and working with neighborhood associations is the best way to encourage planting and stewardship of trees that can reduce tree equity.

The current analysis was carried out from the historical conditions that characterize the asymmetric discourse about the dynamics of urbanization such as: origin, constitution and functioning, segregation, social inequality, poverty and the lack of land regularization in an emergent economy as the municipality of Rio Verde-GO. This study consists of an empirical, bibliographic and documental research, of quantitative nature, using personal direct interviews, involving dialogue reproductions with dwellers and external social actors. The structure of the study took as starting basis the complexity of production and the consecutive reproduction of space destined to poor people. Besides, to what degree globalization modifies the nature of urban agglomeration that promotes displacement and inequality in the urban soil occupation. Elements such as wealth production and distribution, social matters, social relationship vulnerability, and lack of public policies that would guarantee the right to citizenship may produce disparity in housing access, excluding the right to property of the community dwellers, causing social injustice and unbalance / A presente tese aborda, como debate sociológico, a desigualdade no acesso à cidade, objetivando conhecer a ocupação da Vila Ser-Pro no município de Rio Verde GO.
