The Jumano in the first century of colonial contact : ethnohistoric and archaeological perspectives

Schroeder, Eric Austin 25 November 2013 (has links)
The Jumano Indians of Texas have long been an enigma in Texas history and archeology. Many researchers from both disciplines have sought to connect the historic accounts with those of archeological assemblages, but have largely been unsuccessful. Part of the problem has been that the records tend to present problematic issues and very little information in the way of material culture. Another problem has been the tendency among archaeologists in the state to continue to lump site assemblages into larger analytical units, which in effect acts to homogenize any variability that would lend a better understanding of behavioral aspects. Recent efforts in the area of identity and social fields have opened new possibilities. Along these lines this report uses the ethnohistoric data on the Jumano to construct a frame of reference to define the Jumano identity and social field. Using the variability embedded in the Cielo Complex as a model, several sites within the Jumano range were identified for further investigation. / text

Becoming South African' : Examining the Experiences of Caribbean Immigrants Living in Pretoria

Gilbert, Gilbert Marlon January 2019 (has links)
The problem this dissertation engages with is the role of state-defined pathways available for ‘legal’ Caribbean migrants to South Africa, to effectively become South African citizens through practices of assimilation; enabling them to claim citizenship, and thus belonging to a new national community. The concept of a singular, state-defined citizen, a conception that has dominated academic debates over the last hundreds of years, is today challenged by the activities and presence of migrants from everywhere in nearly every place. This new and contemporary dynamic is prompting scholars to conceptualise other images of belonging, images that transcend, move beyond, stretch and displace the centrality of national borders in defining citizenship. One view shifts the source of citizenship rights from the state to the individual, bringing to the fore a cosmopolitan or post-national citizenship. Conversations concerning the significance, or lack thereof, of the state in migration share a tendency to analyse migration from the macro-level that the state represents and interpret individual actions and outcomes from that point of view. In this dissertation I address the problem by investigating the lived experiences of immigrants, and analysing from the micro-level of individuals and their families, in order to understand their relationship to the meso- and macro-levels available within the wider society. In the process, I illuminate the pathways that are available to ‘legal’ Caribbean migrants as they seek to deepen their belonging to a new national community whilst retaining their connections to other national and transnational communities. / Dissertation (MSocSci)--University of Pretoria, 2019. / Anthropology and Archaeology / MSocSci / Unrestricted

Löfgren, Kent January 2002 (has links)
This study analyses differences between student groups at Umeå University, Sweden, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA. It analyses student study situations, students’ experience of the university environment, students’ exercise and sports activities, and connections between study and leisure-time activities. The study owes much to Bourdieu’s Homo Academicus (English edition 1988), and his theories of cultural reproduction, social structures and habitus, and focuses on students from the subject areas teacher education, natural sciences, humanities and sports. Attention is also given to family backgrounds and female/male variance. The data were collected in 1994-1995, with the aid of 782 questionnaires and 64 interviews. The results show differences between students at the two universities in terms of study time, parents’ education and leisure activities and part-time jobs. Students in the studied groups, differ in many respects. The groups have distinct characteristics in terms of, for example, age and sex ratios. The students’ family backgrounds are also divergent, depending on which discipline the student belongs to. These variations between disciplines are found at both universities. Physical activities (action sports) are popular activities, at both universities. Women and men exercise in different ways, although they might have a similar social situation. The scientific methodology of Bourdieu is also discussed in the study. In sum, the results indicate that there are sub-fields within the university. Individuals with different conditions and habitus, to use Bourdieu’s terminology, inhabit these sub-fields.

The main purpose of this research is to investigate the process of becoming a reader in a group of primary school teachers. The teachers work in a public school situated at the Condor quarter, in the periphery of Belém, State of Pará, Brazil. In the reading activities of these subjects, object of an ethnographic observation, it is difficult to recognize the local culture as an object of teaching, whether it is hibridizyded or not with legitimate knowledge, as authorized by the official curriculum, although this culture is part of the teachers' history of literacy. In order to analyze the teachers's reading acquisition process, we start from the approach known as New Literacy Studies, which take literacy as a situated social practice, and we complement it with Bourdieu's theory of practice, as refined by Bernard Lahire and Williams Hanks, in a interdisciplinary perspective of Applied Linguistics. Besides the ethnographic observation, the research methodology, uses interviews for the generation of written and oral narratives that focus on the teachers' reading formation process in the educational social fields of primary socialization - school and family, and secondary socialization - academy and school as work place. The scope of the study, with daily accompaniment of the school SN through collaborative interventions with teachers, made possible a reflection in practice, demonstrating the teachers' linguistic habitus through their perceptions and positionings in the educational social field. In objectiveterms, the research seeks to contribute to the understanding of the teachers' actions that involve school literacies in the Amazon area and to reflect about the teachers' reading formation processes / Doutorado / Lingua Materna / Doutor em Linguística Aplicada

The thesis proposes an analysis about the interaction between the scientific laboratory and its social context by focusing on the media processes that take place in the production of technological innovations. Due to the multiplicity of agents involved in the course of innovation, which are identified in the study case, this thesis intends to show that the invention process requires differentiated ways of communicational interactions so that the relocation from laboratory to society may transform the invention into innovation. Thus, it designs the social space of the technological innovation that comes from chemical and pharmacological researches, and which is permeated into cultural, political, symbolic and media aspects. Inspired by the wondering of how interactions take place in the dispute of innovation meanings and interests, the thesis intends to verify how media communication has acted in such space and what media aspects do to scientific invention. The analysis comes to the conclusion that the laborat

Nossa hipótese prenunciada confirma que essa tensão ocorre pelas especificidades das lógicas de cada campo em cena (BOURDIEU, / This research aims to present and understand the tension triggered between the political documentary propositions of the “Movimento Sem Terra – MST” (Movement of the Landless) on communication and operation of the “Rádio Terra Livre FM” (Radio Free Earth, MF [Modulated Frequency – MF]), demonstrating, in that case, evidence of the society in media coverage. Under the methodological model of participatory research, it also offers reflections on how the MST is dealing with the challenges from the growing social media coverage, with a view to their political idealizations of communication and their appropriation by militants who engage in the practice of communication. From the triad: (a) MST’s documents of communication, (b) Radio Free Land, MF, (c) Group of communicators - we are interested in knowing the causes of this inconsistency, delay/ difference or perhaps incompatibility and lack of articulation between the political formulations of MST on communication and operation of the Radio Free Land, MF. / ABSTRACT The thesis analyzes the relations between work and education and the vocational training in the contemporary Brazil by means of the description, in relational bases, of the social space where collective subjects develop practical‟s and relations relative to the qualification, being that such space constitutes, according to author, a bourdieusian social field, called, in the thesis, of field Qualification. The analysis is made by means of the description of the elements of the field –collective subjects, structure and strategies –and of the reconstitution, still provisory, of its social history and of its processes of (re) production. The analysis privileges the study of the mutations and the conflictuous trajectory of the field, as well as its interactions with three fields considered its “social slopes”: Production, Education and State. The emphasis was given to the understanding of the functioning of the field, in particular in its connections with the recent social transformations, either for the reflection of the questions most general of the society in its interior, and either for the surpassing of its limits, with the qualification contributing for the more general hegemonic legitimation. Also it was tried to understand the possibility of process against hegemonic, in terms of the construction of strategies of resistance and re elaboration, come back toward the emancipation, for not dominant social subjects. For in such a way, the theses presents scenes, from three greats processes that they intercross: the globalization, the productive restructuration and reform of the State and look for criticizing to use by means of the re elaboration and/or appropriation of ample conceptual bases, as the concept of hegemony and State of Antonio Gramsci, the concepts and notions developed for the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu, the geography of Milton Santos the pedagogy of Paulo Freire. The theses also introduces new operatory notions in the scope of the Theory of Social Field –“social slope”, “lines of force” and “tensors”and resignificant others – “terrain” and “‟pole”. As much how much the search of answers to the mentioned questions previously, configured an important objective of the carried through research to initiate the development of a methodology of field analysis. This in the direction to allow not only a fast and precise understanding the paper and the interests of the collective subjects and the established relations already, but, over all of the understanding of the dynamics of the field, allowing the posterior accompaniment of the development of its external and internal relations. At the same time such methodology will be able to potentially the possibilities of socialization of this knowledge for the subjects of the nothegemonic pole. However, if to reach the specific objectives of the research was feasible, they do not have doubt of that its more general objective is beyond the time and space of the doctorate. However, they pave a road for new research, to be trod for all that only understand the knowledge construction as a collective process and when it contributes to resolve concrete problems of the excluded ones and of the majority that-lives-of-the-work.
