Exploring the psychological effects of the Holocaust on the second generation: A phenomenological inquiry with children of Holocaust survivors and children of parents who served the Third ReichSchecker, Suzanne Brita 01 January 1996 (has links)
This dissertation presents the results of a study designed to explore the personal experience of being children of Holocaust survivors or children of parents who served the Third Reich. The clinical literature reveals some of the psychological problems reported by children of Holocaust survivors, but there is no information about the difficulties experienced by the children of perpetrators or by-standers of the Third Reich. Little is known about the strengths and resources used by this second generation to manage and make meaning out of this painful and difficult legacy. This study included a review of the literature on the historical, sociological, and psychological context of Nazi atrocities as well as a glimpse into current thinking in Holocaust studies. Qualitative research was conducted with eight participants, four children of Holocaust survivors, and four children of parents who served the Third Reich. Data from in-depth interviews were grouped into four themes that were common to all the participants; when and how the participants learned about the Holocaust, the effect of this legacy on their personal development during childhood, the impact of the legacy on the participants' chosen professions or work in the world, and the participants' current values and thoughts on spiritual and social issues. Thematic analysis of each category further defined the experience of the participants and offered a data base for emerging implications. The implications include: the need for further study of the effects of war and genocide on the second generation, the need for greater education, and the inclusion of the second generation in treatment of psychological trauma, the need to provide opportunities for the descendants of both sides to speak and have their stories heard in a safe and non-judgmental environment, and the greater concern about the long-term psychological damage of wars, genocide, and group violence on future generations.

廣西賀街鎮的地方宗教研究. / Local religion at Hejie, Guangxi / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / Guangxi Hejie Zhen de di fang zong jiao yan jiu.January 2010 (has links)
Based on the ample fieldwork studies, this thesis argues that the landscape of local religion changes simultaneously with the change of Chinese local society. And it is local religion, which was easily to be overlooked, that reflects the lifestyle and organizational style of ordinary Chinese people, and influences their logic of behavior. / By describing the above dimensions of local religion, this thesis explores the roles of local religion played in the construction of social order and its operational mechanism. It argues that the reason why Chinese local religion is able to revive after several political movements against it, and even survive nowadays in the process of modernization and urbanization, lies mainly in its flexibility. The cases involved in this thesis, for example, the transformation between temple and lineage hall, the different images of the same local deity according to different phases and groups of people, the alliance of religious ritual specialists in the name of 'performance group of art' and 'performance group of magic', etc., all together show the flexibility of local religion. And such flexibility allows local religion to offer various kinds of flexible self-organizational models to local society, according to different social needs. / This thesis discusses local religion at Hejie, Guangxi, during the period between 1858 and 2009, drawing on a variety of sources, including gazetteers, official documents, stele inscriptions, writing collections of local literati, oral historical materials, ritual performances, observations of temple festivals, etc. It concerns with multiple dimensions regarding with the landscape of local religion at Hejie, such as the organization of religious institutions, the construction of local deities, unities and diversities in temple festivals, ritual specialists (both Taoists and Mediums) and their contemporary alliance, etc. / 劉泳斯. / Adviser: Wai Lun Tam. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 73-03, Section: A, page: . / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2010. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 195-202). / Electronic reproduction. The present work aims particularly two very important questions in Caio Prado Jr. thought. On the one hand the colonization meaning category and the presentation made by the author, as well as the fundaments that guide this meaning overcoming, in other words the Brazilian revolution theory. We hope to point out how the author works with the category in his books, taking in account a historiographical way and the considerations made by specialized literature. Furthermore, indicate how the category is the guidance of all his interpretation about Brazil, conforming to the author the different social and cultural outspread relationship in the country. In relation to the Brazilian revolution aspects we point out the author vision historic precedents that contributes with the consolidation of some necessary elements to the country structure transformation from a political, social and economic point of view and how Caio Prado understands this conjuncture and suggests a specificity inside the economic field in order to overcomes the business meaning, or colonization, presented in the Brazilian social production relation. We hope to recapture the main theoretical questions that guided the debate with PCB and the author position in relation to the Brazilian fundaments theoretical revolution / Mestrado / Sociologia / Mestre em Sociologia

This research analyzes the sociological thought emergence in France through the intellectual production of Historical Institute of Paris (IHP) members, with support from manuscript documents and publications regarding this institute activities between 1834, its foundation year, and 1850. The IHP, founded by Eugène de Monglave, intended to exclusively stimulate historical research, but actually its statutes and activities indicate a strong closeness with social science. We support that this "sociological closeness" happened through the Buchezian school, leaded by Philippe Buchez, from a saint-simonian origin, who kept loyal to Saint-Simon's project of constituting a social science. Particularly, IHP undertook an attempt of social science definition and promoted sociologic research through discussions that happened at annual Historical Conferences organized by the society. The analysis of the ideas debated at IHP about the society moral re-organization demand, races theory, hygienism and statistic research elucidate some conditions of emerging, ambitions and concerns that featured sociology pre-disciplinary period / Doutorado / Doutor em Sociologia

Examining the Origins of Sociology: Continuities and Divergences Between Ibn Khaldun, Giambattista Vico, August Comte, Ludwig Gumplowicz, and Emile DurkheimSoyer, Mehmet 05 1900 (has links)
This thesis examines the extent to which Ibn Khaldun can legitimately be considered a founding father of sociology. To pursue this research, Khaldun's theoretical framework will be compared with four Western scholars: Auguste Comte, Emile Durkheim, Giambattista Vico, and Ludwig Gumplowicz. This paper begins with an Introduction (Chapter I), followed by a general overview of Khaldun's work (Chapter II). Next, Khaldun's work is compared to that of Auguste Comte (Chapter III), Emile Durkheim (Chapter IV), Ludwig Gumplowicz (Chapter V) and Giambattista Vico (Chapter VI). In each of these chapters, Khaldun is compared and contrasted to the other social theorist, illustrating their similarities and considering their differences. Finally, in Chapter VII, I put forth conclusions that consider the extent to which Khaldun can validly be considered a founding father of sociology.

Our study of the orientation of research in the social sciences and humanities is a response to Micheal Burawoy’s typology of knowledge production. The objective of this investigation is to identify and describe the social organisation of the meaning of research as scholars attempt to reach different audiences and as their investigations are routed towards particular cognitive aims. Having conducted twenty-five in-depth interviews with historians, sociologists and economists, we analysed their interpretations of research practices in relation to the social space of academia and in regards to the extension of academic activities towards other social spaces. This analysis is then mobilised to comment on Michael Burawoy’s typology of research as we attempt to correct some of the distinctions he makes between professional, critical, policy and public knowledge. Notably, we suggest that these “types” should be broken down into multiple postures understood in relation to a segmentation of academic discursive fields and a differentiation of extra-academic modes of intervention.

In this dissertation, the phrase 'Christian Citizen' refers to those Christians who possess a strong sense of identity, believing in Christianity and upholding the corresponding faith while fulfilling civic responsibility and loving one's country. Through gathering and investigating into the personal letters, works and reports and so on of Liu, this dissertation renders an in-depth exploration of Liu's analysis on national character, views on citizenship and his blueprint of the Civic Education Movement. More importantly, Liu did not resort to empty talk but walked the talk, integrating faith with daily life. Throughout his whole life, including, in the early days, the Career Guidance Movement and his work at the Y.M.C.A., his presidency at the University of Shanghai and fmally the righteous action in defending against Japanese invasion during the latter days, the quality of Liu, in being loyal to one's nation, displaying care and concern for the society, living out and walking one's faith whole-heartedly was evident. His life manifested the unification of the roles and functions of a Christian citizen of one's nation, with Christian citizenship vividly lived out. Special investigation would be made into a rarely noted work headed by Liu, Y.M.C.A.'s Civic Education Movement in the 1920s, under the slogan 'Saving Nation through Character'. The origins, effectiveness and characteristics of the Movement would be explored. This study concludes with revealing, through Liu's life, the characteristics of being a Christian citizen and examines the choice of the advocators of 'Saving Nation through Character'. / There is a saying: "One more Christian, one fewer Chinese". It implies a conflict between an Ascribed Identity (Chinese) and an Achieved Identity (Christian). The former is an inherited and irreversible blood relationship while the latter is acquired after birth, being a self-converted social role. Undeniably, conflict of identities brought about bewilderment and impact to Chinese Christians in late Qing and Early Republican eras, causing identity crisis. Role identification is a process of getting to know oneself in terms of cognition, attitude and behavior, affecting daily life and instilling meaning of life. Quite a number of researches in the past emphasized the mental struggle and torture suffered by Chinese Christians under the seemingly incompatibility of the two identities. However, identity crisis is by no means impossible to do away with or integrated. This research attempts to show that ascribed identity and achieved identity can be integrated harmoniously through identify negotiation. The case of Liu Zhan-en (1896--1938) clearly demonstrated roles of being a citizen on earth and that of heavenly kingdom need not be an either-or option. Christians are not only citizens of the eternal heavenly kingdom, but also contemporary citizens on earth. One can live in serving the Lord with piety while obeying legal requirements stipulated by the government. Devoted and sound citizenship could be harmoniously integrated to be 'Christian Citizen'. / 黃錦暉. / Adviser: Yuen Sang Leung. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 73-03, Section: A, page: . / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2010. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 221-252). / Electronic reproduction.
