Do Japão ao Brasil = trabalhadores japoneses em São Paulo (1908-1922) / From Japan to Brazil : japanese workers in São Paulo (1908-1922)

Almeida, Gustavo Henrique Gomes de, 1981- 20 August 2018 (has links)

This periodization refers to the period when part of the cost of passage was paid by the government, aiming to benefit immigrants who were coming to work in the coffee plantations. Considering the coming of the Japanese as part of the system to obtain a labor force (therefore, a history in which class and class struggle are essential concepts), English social history provides a theoretical basis for the analysis. Specifically, the objective was to investigate immigrant autonomy, the possible of actions and reactions, even when these initiatives occurred in a given social and political context. Therefore this thesis tried to point out how, even in a system in which the labor force was closely controlled, there was in some degree a possibility of immigrants seeking their own interests. To the Japanese, these kinds of actions could be expressed as open revolts or, in more discrete ways, in resistance through everyday actions, for example, going to work on other plantation, seeking better salaries and exchanging information. Those initiatives, more than daily activities, also represented a constant struggle and imposed barriers to the fazendeiros and the Sao Paulo ruling class, especially when multiplied by many immigrants. Workers leaving their jobs affected directly the main goal of the immigration; namely, flooding the labor market to promote lower wages and to undermine collective bargaining. Regarding this situation, the thesis investigates the relation between Japanese immigrants and the ruling class, focusing on acts of open defiance like strikes, and everyday forms of resistance, as the colonos moved away from their birthplaces and coffee plantations, seeking better opportunities and living conditions elsewhere / Mestrado / Historia Social / Mestre em História

Hospitalisations de patients en Bourgogne et dans neuf autres régions métropolitaines, analyse territoriale des flux interrégionaux à partir de la base nationale du PMSI-MCO / Hospitalizations of patients in Burgundy and in nine other french regions, spatial analysis of interregional flows from french hospital claims data

Roussot, Adrien 11 December 2015 (has links)
Introduction / presentation of the context : The creation of ARS (Regional Healthcare Agencies) was accompanied by the regionalized organization of healthcare. Even though the administrative procedures for dividing the country into areas for healthcare coverage are well known, we propose a geographic analysis of the reasons why patients attend one hospital rather than another, which seem to escape the logic used by the authorities. Methods employed and sources of data : Using the PMSI-MCO, we studied the flow of patients living in one region to hospitals in other regions according to ten reasons for visiting hospitals. The analysis was completed by a cartographic analysis, which related the flow to different geographical and historical divisions in Burgundy and in nine other test regions.Main results : The cartography of hospital flow in Burgundy and for each test region showed that the choices made by patients were often coherent with regard to the limits that we used. Our results indicate that regional administrative boundaries do not always create homogeneous territories. For each test region, invisible boundaries appear. They stem from historical sedimentation and were shaped by numerous geographic dynamics.Discussion/ConclusionGeography makes it easier to understand hospital flow, which escapes the logic of current regional administrative planning. Now, with the creation of new super-regions, geography appears to be an essential tool to establish more pragmatic healthcare coverage.

The Southern Altiplano of Bolivia in the boom time of quinoa

Vassas Toral, Anaïs 05 December 2011 (has links)
Responding to a new food market demand, the Southern Altiplano region of Bolivia has become the world’s largest exporterof quinoa, a traditional food of Andean populations, now consumed in many countries in the North. This thesis investigatesthe changes induced by the transition from subsistence agriculture to family‐based export agriculture, with a particular focus on the spatial mobility of the populations and its relation to the profound changes experienced by this region.Reconstruction through life narratives of the biographies of 170 people originating from 5 rural communities facilitated areframing of the quinoa boom in the context of the residential, professional and circulatory histories of the populations.Through study of the links between mobility, agricultural dynamics, and local resource management, this study demonstrates i) the great reactivity of the families and communities facing the demands of new production systems, ii) theemergence of multiple forms of social agreements, iii) the plasticity of the livelihood territories revealed by various practicesof mobility and pluriactivity based on a reticular socio‐spatial organization connecting the city and the countryside. However, in this region of fragile environment and harsh climate conditions, the resurgence of interest in agriculturalactivities, precipitating the return of many migrants and the emergence of multiple actors, is accompanied by hugepressures on land resources, social tensions and a risk of environmental degradation, calling into question the crucial issue of the sustainable management of the region.

Security and belonging: reconceptualising Aboriginal spatial mobilities in Yamatji country, Western Australia

Prout, Sarah January 2007 (has links)
"December 2006". / Thesis (PhD) -- Macquarie University, Division of Environmental and Life Sciences, Department of Human Geography, 2007. / Bibliography: p. 284-307. / Introduction -- Case-study area profile and methodology -- A walkabout race?: contemporary Aboriginal mobilities in Yamatji country -- State service provision and Aboriginal mobilities -- Security and belonging: re-conceptualising Aboriginal mobilities -- Security and belonging and the mainstream economy -- The ties that bind: negotiating security and belonging through family -- Conclusion. / This dissertation explores contemporary Aboriginal spatial practices in Yamatji country, Western Australia, within the context of rural service provision by the State government. The central themes with which it engages are a) historical and contemporary conceptualisations of Aboriginal spatialities; b) the lived experiences of Aboriginal mobilities in the region; and c) the dialectical, and often contentious, relationship between Aboriginal spatial practices and public health, housing, and education services. Drawing primarily on a range of field interviews, the thesis opens up a discursive space for examining the cultural content and hidden assumptions in constructions of 'appropriate' models of spatial mobility. In taking a policy-oriented focus, it argues that the appropriate provision of basic government services requires a shift away from overly simplistic assumptions and discourses of Aboriginal mobility. Until the often subtle practices of rendering particular Aboriginal mobilities as irrational, deviant, and/or mysterious are challenged and replaced, deep-colonising practices in rural and remote Australia will persist. --The thesis reconceptualises contemporary Aboriginal spatial practices in Yamatji country based upon an examination of dynamics and circumstances that undergird Aboriginal mobilities in the region. With this empirical focus, it argues that Aboriginal spatial practices are fashioned by the processes of procuring, cultivating and contesting a sense of security and belonging. Case study material presented suggests that two primary considerations inform these processes. A post-settlement history of contested alienation from family and country (both sources from which belonging and security were traditionally derived), and a changing engagement with mainstream social and economic institutions, have produced a context in which security and belonging are iteratively derived from a number of sources. Contemporary Aboriginal spatial practices therefore take a complex variety of forms. The thesis concludes that adopting the framework of security and belonging for interpreting contemporary Aboriginal mobilities provides a starting point for engaging more effectively and intentionally with dynamic Aboriginal spatial practices in service delivery policy and practice. / Mode of access: World Wide Web. / x, 320 p. ill., maps

Oliveira, Josiane Silva de January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this thesis was to discuss the relationship between everyday practices and emotions in organizational process of contemporary circus. For this purpose, a multisited ethnographic study in the context Brazil - Canada between the years 2011 in the Brazilian city of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, and 2013 was held in the Canadian city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec. In the first theoretical basis of this study, I realize a discussion about the political dimension of practices, ways of making social subjects, in everyday organizational processes highlighting (i)mobility of organizations in Organizational Studies. Indeed, consider the organizational routine as spaces of practices that constitute micro - politics of everyday life - in the midst of a normative management processes. The micro refer to the comparison of practical relations with logical action of certain historical and culturally; present a procedural nature, because the forms of organization are multiple and interconnected spaces in practice; produce effects in everyday life due to its relational character with normative spheres of society. Highlight the emotions like practices in organizational routine that to be articulated to other daily practices form the emotional political dimension of organizational processes. One of the identified effects of emotional politics in the everyday work of the circus was the production of multiple spatialities that despite, enable circuses by seeking recognition of their artistic legitimacy, produced counterpoints regarding the order established in the political field of the arts in the cities studied. Indeed, circuses could be understood as organizational heterotopic spaces, or spaces constituting the social order, but their practical relations established reverse forces. Thus, the thesis that I defend in this paper is that the relationship between everyday practices and emotions are emotional politics of organizational processes resulting in the production of heterotopias. The main results of this research highlight the importance of emotions in organizations showing how practical elements for the development of a Political Theory of Emotions in Organizational Studies. The methodological contribution that I present in this thesis is the appropriation of multisited ethnography as a research strategy for understanding organizations that are based on socio- spatial mobility and in different locations. In terms applied to management, the survey results highlight that the creative process of circus performers is centered on a collective dynamic, engaging in conversation as relevant to the transmission of knowledge of artistic production and the realization of creative residencies in different cultural contexts as a basis for technical training and social development of the circus. On the process of training of artists, highlight the need to incorporate studies on the collective dimension of organizing the training of circus performers in circus schools and the subject cultural producer as articulator of artistic practices to management practices.

This thesis treats of the means, manners and living conditions of rural households located at the base of the Brazilian social structure, i.e. those people classified as poor by the Brazilian Government. More specifically, it will be discussed the social reproduction strategies of poor rural families economically, residents in the municipality of Itinga, Jequitinhonha Valley, a mesoregion rather emblematic for performing on the national scene as a "pocket of misery", defined from the high incidence of poverty (economic) and because it was established as a kind of "migrant nursery”. For the most diverse regions of Brazil, the temporary displacement of migrants working in precarious situations , the final migration as part of families and individuals from there originated are elements which have been used as indicative in a deruralization process. This municipality is located in a social and economic environment known by its little socioeconomic dynamism, high levels of social and material deprivation, and the predominance of the rural population engaged in agricultural activities, manly for self-consumption. Based on qualitative methodologies in production of evidences, and having families residing in rural communities as the unit of analysis, the research begins of two hypothetical principles: I- even less dynamic rural regions of the country are not going through a process of the social, cultural, economic demographic and migration emptying, especially at precarious work, is part of the social reproduction strategies in order to stay in their own places of origin, and more broadly, element of the local culture; II- the social policies expansion in poor areas impact considerably the social and economic dynamics of rural peoples in poor areas, enabling improving the economy in family units, allowed for non-contributory income. Such income interfere with senses and meanings spatial mobility, including conditioning potential migrants in their home localities. / The aim of this thesis was to discuss the relationship between everyday practices and emotions in organizational process of contemporary circus.

In this thesis, I have carried out data-driven studies based on rich, large-scale combined data sets including social links between users (calls and SMS), their demographic parameters (age and gender), their mobility and their economic information such as income and spendings. These seven studies bring insights in network science but also in sociology, economy and geography. The questions asked are very diversified. How can one quantify the loss of temporal information caused by the aggregation of link streams into series of graphs? How can one infer mobility of a user from his or her localisations of calls? Is it possible to transmit SMS in a dense region by using the density of phones, the mobility of users and the locality of the messages? How can one quantify and prove empirically the social stratification of the society at a large population scale? I present, for this last question, a first socio-economic study with a data-driven approach. It has been possible to study, at a very large scale, the stratification of the society, the existence of "rich-clubs", the spatial segregation and purchase patterns for each social class. Beyond the variety of studies and their numerous applications, this thesis shows that the analysis of individual rich combined datasets at a large population scale gives the opportunity to answer long-standing hypotheses and to address novel questions. This work not only points out the potentiality of Big Data approach but also its complementarity to classical approaches (modelization, surveys, …). Particular attention was given in order to explain each steps that lead to results and to take into account biases which is too often neglected.

On the other hand, the same ones always were put in a secondary plan up against current policies. In relation to the object of study where it was developed this research, it is all right that the members of the Rural Black community Água Limpa builds an alternative territory linked to an identity territory around cultural nuances left their ancestries. The Água Limpa territory and the identity of the group is the result of responsibility of men and women that make possible the individual and collective statement composed by those ones. It is necessary also to say that space motion that has caused by the exit of several residents that migrate toward cities last years, hasn t been a determinate factor to characterize a motion away their traditions and cultural identity built in the community. It was noticed along of this research that habits of these people despite to be in cities, they didn t lose the link with their birth place. It means they keep a cultural identity that even with the several uses and functions that the cities present their way of human and cultural relationship get to have a continuation. This research has the objective to contribute for the current debate about the Cultural Geography mainly of quilombolas communities specially the Água Limpa one, discussing its cultural and territory identity, checking the new needs to think again the meaning of quilombola territory and its possibilities of development for the well-being of its residents. The ethnic differences as richness of human race present characteristics that are reproduced by the own group, that is, depict true identity and cultural devices.

Oliveira, Josiane Silva de January 2014 (has links)
