Amid otherworld stages

Zhang, Qingqing January 2018 (has links)
Where does the soul go after death? This question is based on my ‘fear of ghosts’ and became the starting point of my degree project, which most obviously stems from our fear of the unknown.   In the age of technology, many people claim that they are atheists and think that everything has or will have a physical explanation. But the fact is that definitions of reality are always provisional. We can only have an imaginary concept of this mysterious land and open up to all possibilities of the afterlife. This project include ideas from mesmerism and use substitutes to represent paranormal ectoplasm in order to materialise immaterial ghosts. The installation represents scientific experiments by including laboratory features. I intend to discuss contemporary attitudes to the afterlife.

Otherworldly Figures: Rhetoric, Representation, and the Public Performance of Femininity in Nineteenth-Century Spirit Mediums' Autobiographies

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: This dissertation theorizes nineteenth-century public performance of spiritual media as being inherent to the production of autobiography itself. Too often, dominant social discourses are cast as being singular cultural phenomena, but analyzing the rhetorical strategies of women attempting to access public spheres reveals fractures in what would otherwise appear to be a monolithic patriarchal discourse. These women's resistant performances reap the benefits of a fractured discourse to reveal a multiplicity of alternative discourses that can be accessed and leveraged to gain social power. By examining the phenomena of four nineteenth- century Spiritualists' mediumship from a rhetorical perspective, this study considers how female spirit mediums used their autobiographies to operate as discursive spaces mediating between private and public spheres; how female mediums constructed themselves in the public sphere as women and as spiritual authorities; how they negotiated entry into volatile and unpredictable publics; how they conceived of the vulnerability of the female body in the public sphere; and how they coped with complications inherent to Victorian era constructions of feminine corporeality. In conclusion, this dissertation offers a highly situated performative theory of subaltern publicity. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. English 2012

Finalmente... / From a consideration of the increasing importance of depressive states of mind today, and the finding of relative lack of consensus on this topic in the psychoanalytic milieu, this research proposes to recover the theoretical context that allowed the formulation of the melancholy’s theory presented in the article Melancholy and Mourning (FREUD, 1917[1915]). It is to analyze the foundations of Freud's theory of melancholia, in order to provide more accurate conceptual elements that contribute to clarify the problems that exist around the subject until today. The research methodology is based on reading and textual and conceptual analysis of the subject delimited in selected works from a bibliographical review. The study revealed that the foundations of Freud's theory of melancholia are set on a tripod formed by the etiological model of the transference neuroses, by applying this model to the narcissistic neuroses (through the formulation of the concept of narcissism and its derivatives), and by the dialogue between Freud and his followers, who have directly contributed to the construction of several elements that have shaped the Freudian propositions. Faced with this, it seems that the Freudian theory of melancholia lies at the intersection of a theoretical and clinical path that leads from transference neuroses to narcissistic neuroses, and culminating in the establishment of the second topical theory of the psychic apparatus. The results of this research show that the formulation of Mourning and Melancholia is due to the theoretical development of Freudian theory, and also resulted from the dialogues and exchanges between theoretical contributions coming from the psychoanalysts of his time, and the current controversies reflect the discussions that occurred during this period. Finally, it is expected that this research offers elements... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Almas enclausuradas : práticas de intervenção médica, representações culturais e cotidiano no Sanatório Espírita de Uberlândia (1932-1970) / Confined souls: medical intervention practice, daily and cultural representations in the Sanatório Espírita de Uberlândia (1932-1970)

Ribeiro, Raphael Alberto 30 August 2006 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The proposal of this work is to think about how madness and its institutionalization happened in Uberlândia. This discussion involving madness as the thematic still is current and intriguing for all that it represented and still represents in our society. Doubts have appeared intensely around the great unknown that involves the madness. Which are the indications that evidence madness? Or even, madness really exists? Many other investigations are placed, also questioning the medical speech, that before was presented as winning, as also its practices and curative techniques. On the other hand, today we can observe how much the debates of other society segments had been important, because, in a way or another, they had not accepted the imposition of psychiatric knowledge. This research was originated from a vast documentation found in the Sanatório Espírita de Uberlândia, institution established in 1942 and deactivated in middle 90´s. They are 29 books containing innumerable handbooks of the interns from 1942 to 1959. In this documentation we find information about the reason of the internment, report from the responsible for the sheltered, theirs diagnostics and the prognostics, therapeutical methods used, among other informations. Having in mind these documentation possibilities of analysis, the field of reflection used in this research has as premise to work with complex speeches that had been elaborated about the insanity present in Uberlândia and understand how it made possible the institutionalization practical.
