Jill Jackson: Pioneering in the Press Box

Perkins, Katherine C 16 December 2016 (has links)
Jill Jackson was one of the first female sports journalists and a pioneer voice for women in athletics. Although heretofore overlooked in the history of American sports journalism, the story of her career is an addition not only to the historiography of female sports journalists but also to the broader study of women in the mid-twentieth century. Jackson was admired, a hard worker, from a prominent New Orleans family, and well educated, yet she still was treated unequally in her primary workspace—the press box. Jackson left well-documented story to the Nadine Vorhoff Library and Special Collections at Newcomb College Institute in New Orleans. The collection, comprised of scrapbooks, photographs, letters, and newspaper articles, reveal the struggles and rewards of her impressive career.

Mediální obraz devíti mistrovství světa v ledním hokeji na československém a českém území v dobovém tisku / Media image of nine ice hockey world championships in the Czechoslovakia and Czech republic in the contemporary press

Velikovská, Tereza January 2015 (has links)
The thesis "Media image of nine ice hockey world championships in the Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic in the contemporary press" focuses on reporting on nine ice hockey world championships hosted by the Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic in media. This is done by qualitative analysis of articles in the contemporary press in both specialized sports daily or weekly papers and general papers. The goal of this thesis is to prove how the style of reporting changed since the first championship in 1933 through seven decades to the last one in 2004. Apart from analyzing the degree and target of critique and style of reporting, it also focuses on the influence of current political climate and propaganda in the period between world wars, after the World War II, 1968 Russian occupation and shortly after the Velvet revolution. The reporting period was set at one month before the start of each tournament and two weeks after it's end. In case of 1933 and 1938 championships, the thesis analyzes the following papers: Rudé právo, České slovo, Národní politika. In later years: Československý sport, Mladá fronta, Rudé právo, Svobodné slovo (all daily), Stadión and Gól (both weekly). After the Velvet revolution: Sport, Právo, MF Dnes (all daily). The analysis focuses mostly on the content of the reporting.

Úspěchy zlínského hokejového klubu ve vybraných médiích / Successes of the Zlín ice-hockey club as reported in chosen media

Jurák, Vojtěch January 2019 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the media presentation of three chosen successes the Zlín ice-hockey club has achieved since the 1990s. The practical part is constituted by a quantitative content analysis that studies three different types of newspaper and their online counterparts (a community paper the Zlínský deník, online at: zlinsky.denik.cz, a national paper with a developed regional supplement the Mladá fronta dnes, online at: idnes.cz and a national paper the Právo, online at: sport.cz) in three periods of time (the Czech ice-hockey league finals in 1995, 2004 and 2014). The analysis studied 873 media articles in total. In general, the extent of coverage increased strongly between the years 1995 and 2004. The coverage of the finals by the community media was the most detailed, just as supposed. Quite surprising was the extent of coverage by the Mladá fronta dnes that was larger than expected. The core of sports reporting didn't really change across time, titles or information channels. The news, stories and game evaluations comprised the biggest part of the coverage. But it was the form of reporting that kept changing. The most observable trends were the growth of visual content in time and the increasing position of the Internet. Especially in 2014, its usage was quite extensive.

This research deals with the new relationship between football clubs and traditional media outlets, after the mainstream media processes have been a part of society. You start with the assumption that, favoured by the new communication devices and by knowing how to handle this new kind of media, football clubs have assembled their press offices and started, themselves, to produce new content. The clubs have stopped being only sources of information and became active members of the communicational world. That change made the whole relationship with mainstream media different, which created a dispute bewtween the media field and the sports field. By field, we use the concept formulated by Bordieu (2004), in which he claims they're autonomous spaces, with their own laws, both integrating a macrocosmos. We believe that this shift in football clubs and their relation to the media, from being a reactive to an active agent, provoked what Fausto Neto (2008) has defined as "zones of affectation" among sectors of a mediated society. We understand, as José Luiz Braga (2012) does, that the targets in which we must point our researches are in this new relations with society. To study this new relationship way involving football clubs, specialized reporters and the affectations that they cause in the journalistic process, we looked onto the cases of Sport Club Internacional and the newspaper Zero Hora, both from Porto Alegre, using content analysis as the main study methodology, along with exploratory research and interviews. From observing the material published at the club's official website and at ColoradoZH, we understand that the alterations in the relations between source and reporter are shifting the sports coverage at the traditional media outlets, and puting at the media scene a new member: the offical media of the football clubs.

Guimarães, Carlos Gustavo Soeiro January 2018 (has links)
This research intends to analyze new practices of the sports commentators in the radio of Porto Alegre within the so called phase of convergence of the brazilian radio (FERRARETTO, 2012). It is considered as a theoretical parameter the political economy of communication, accounting for the predominance, in Rio Grande do Sul, of the radio as a company in search of profit, whose programation interferes in the society of Rio Grande do Sul (FERRARETTO, 2007). It starts from the hypothesis that there is a transformation in the modes of content production of sports commentators. Thereby, these practices are analyzed from the field of sports radiojour-nalism (ALCOBA LÓPEZ, 2005) and football (DAMATTA, 1982), within a convergence sce-nario (JENKINS, 2008) and the validity of a Multiplicity of Supply phase (BRITTOS, jul-dec.2002). With the assumption that radio is also transfigured by the influence of other media (FIDLER, 1998), it is understood that sports commentators act, in their contempority, under the prism of new professional practices, caused by convergence. With this, the fundamental pro-blem is proposed: how does this new model operate in Porto Alegre sports radio? The objective of this work is to analyze this new configuration in the model of the professional practices of sports commentators in Porto Alegre radio, since this type of content occupies a good part of the programming of the analyzed stations: Bandeirantes, Gaúcha, Grenal and Guaíba, the four radios that systematic coverage of football. Using the content analysis (BARDIN, 2016) as the main methodology, the focus is on four axes, proposed in an article that serves as the embryo of this study, produced by Guimarães and Ferraretto (2016). These are the characteristics pro-posed as fundamental for the contemporary commentary: creative audience, use of data for analysis, approximation with the field of sports and plurality of journalistic genres in the content of the commentary. From this analysis of content, a cross-examination with interviews with the professionals, through the methodology of oral history, is made. The result points to the exis-tence of these new practices and the presence of the characteristics in most of the professionals that serve as corpus of research. However, it is not yet a model that can be considered widely hegemonic.

Two cross-country skiers in the tabloids : - A study of the tabloids coverage of Charlotte Kalla and Marcus Hellner in the 2010 Olympics and the 2014 Olympics

Stenvall, Johan January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to examine how the two Swedish cross-country skiers, Charlotte Kalla and Marcus Hellner are portrayed in the tabloids Aftonbladet and Expressen. The study is based on theories of sports journalism, media- and gender studies. Within these theories there are beliefs that men and women are portrayed differently in sports journalism. Sports journalism is described as a subject where there is a hierarchy in which the man is often framed as dominant in relationship to the woman. This study was made in an attempt to examine whether this was the case in the Swedish tabloid magazines Aftonbladet and Expressens coverage of the winter Olympics. Articles published about Charlotte Kalla and Marcus Hellner in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, and the Olympic Games in Sochi in 2014 were analyzed by a quantitative content analysis. The two athletes were selected because they during the time of the study were prominent in their sport in which both achieved similar success. The results of the study showed that there were differences in Aftonbladet and Expressen’s media coverage of Charlotte Kalla and Marcus Hellner. Kalla appeared in more numbers of articles than Hellner but she was often described as weak and her physical appearance was often highlighted. Hellner was often described as strong and focused regardless of whether he had failed or was successful.

The following essay is based on a quantitative as well as a qualitative study with the aim ofmapping out the representation and depiction of different sports, with focus on equestriansports, in two of Sweden’s largest daily newspapers during a time period of four weeksin 2012. Berglund, Emil, Idemark, Oscar January 2013 (has links)
In this C-essay examines how football players Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Cristiano Ronaldo depicts in different countries media, especially newspapers and web sites. An investigation into fan identity among supporters of the English soccer premier league in Lusaka, Zambia

Komakoma, Leah January 2006 (has links)
This study investigates Zambians’ construction of identities based on their following of the English soccer premier league. The study seeks to understand how Zambian supporters of this league construct their identities based on their encounter with foreign teams/players and how they appropriate the meanings obtained through such viewing in their daily lives. The study is informed by the theories of fandom. Using an ethnographic critique of the media imperialism thesis, the study attempts to explore the meanings that the fans of the English soccer league in urban Lusaka make of the mediated soccer games, while in and outside the viewing spaces – the bars – where the games are ritually watched in groups. Based on the qualitative methods of focus group discussions, individual in-depth interviews and observations, the study probes the phenomenon of the consumption of English premier league football in countries abroad, focusing specifically on the experiences of fans in Lusaka, Zambia. Observation of this phenomenon in Lusaka reveals that fans find pleasure in the tactics that the teams in the league display, the professionalism of the players, goal scoring and self-empowerment for the few women supporters. This study probes these issues in greater depth. The foremost conclusion of the research is that it neither completely rejects nor accepts the media imperialism thesis. Instead, meanings should be understood within the context of the lived experience and reality of the fans.
