Licht (1977-2003) de Karlheinz Stockhausen : aspects autobiographiques et intertextualité / Licht, Die sieben Tage der Woche (1977-2003) from Karlheinz Stockhausen : autobiographical aspects and intertextuality

Prynda, Maya 12 December 2015 (has links)
Licht. / Licht. Die sieben Tage der Woche (1977-2003) is a cycle of seven operas composed by Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928-2007) who also wrote the libretto. The main topic of the cycle is the cyclical fulfilment of the destiny of three spirits – Michael, Eva and Luzifer – whose destiny is related to the characteristics of each of the seven days of the week. A multitude of events will however be added to the main story, making the progress of the action sometimes difficult to understand. Our thesis, mainly focused on the libretto, aims at studying the autobiographical elements and the intertextual relationships throughout each opera in order to identify the elements of unity into the cycle. The first part of this thesis is dedicated to a general presentation of the Licht project and to the libretto and characters’ introduction. The cycle follows indeed in the footsteps of Stockhausen’s work, including parts based on the principle of a formula and those appealing an extra-musical theme. A study of the autobiographical dimension of the operas follows. In this part, we particularly establish the link between the desire to deliver a universal, cosmic and timeless message and the evocation of the composer’s memories, travels and influences. Finally, our work closes with an analysis of the religious, philosophical and esoteric dimensions of the cycle. Stockhausen has indeed been deeply influenced by the Asian cultures and religions, in particular from India and Japan. There are other influences like The Bible, but also esotericism and the significant influence of many new-Christian movements and books like the Urantia Book. Under the guise of focusing on the relationships between the three main characters, Licht becomes a summary of Stockhausen’s life and work.

An Examination of Two Significant Percussion Compositions: Karlheinz Stockhausen's Zyklus and Ingolf Dahl's Duettino Concertante, a Lecture Recital Together with Five Recitals of Selected Works of A. Ginastera, A. Wilder, W. Kraft, and Others

Carney, Michael R. (Michael Reed), 1952- 12 1900 (has links)
Zvklus (1959) by Karlheinz Stockhausen and Duettino Concertante (1966) by Ingolf Dahl represent two of the most significant percussion compositions that present the percussionist as soloist. The performer of these works, either unaccompanied or accompanied by a non-percussion instrument, is featured as executant, interpreter, and improvisor. They are regarded as classics in the medium of multiple percussion because of their frequency of performance and their profound effect on notation, musical composition, and the technical expectations of the percussionist. This paper examines these compositions and their historical significance to both percussion literature and the percussionist. Each of these compositions is analzyed by examining instrumentation, compositional procedures, and performance problems. Finally, the notational procedures and role of the performer in these compositions are compared. A discussion of the development of the percussion batterie, percussion ensemble, and the important early solo multiple percussion compositions provides historical perspective for these compositions. This perspective is enhanced by consideration of biography, influences, and stylistic development of each composer.

CuDAS : an interactive curriculum combining pedagogic composition with interactive software for the teaching of music technology

Leaman, Oliver January 2010 (has links)
Within the framework of education of Music Technology for 16-18 year olds there exists a lack of thorough teaching and learning resources sufficient for a broad understanding of the basics of audio and electronic synthesis. This PhD submission outlines the role of the composer in the classroom in addressing this fundamental issue through the development of a curriculum containing pedagogic composition and interactive software. There will be a discussion of the principles of pedagogic methodologies developed by various composers and of the current model of learning provided in Music Technology Alevel. The programming tools used to develop the software are investigated, as well as an exploration into the current learning psychology that informed the curriculum development. This submission consists of a written thesis that accompanies a set of compositions and a multimedia DVD, which includes the software for the CuDAS curriculum. Within this software is contained a presentation of a series of interactive tutorials alongside compositions in the form of scores, recordings and interactive exercises. There is also include written supporting documentation and sound files of techniques and recordings from contrasting genres of music history.

The work of Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928-2007) is contoured by several approaches that concern the range of the explorations of the very musical phenomena, and some others that permeate the musical discourse. Among them there is the relation between the serial procedures, as in the early works, and the procedures within a wider range of possibilities, where the first concepts are reviewed and extended. On these assertions, I propose a dialog that verse on the several implications on the organization of musical discourse in Stockhausen’s electronic music. I use Gesang der Jünglinge (1955-1956) and Hymnen (1966-1967) as main examples, but all the same I do some incursions in his instrumental works, as so as in his electronic studies. Thus I search for subsidies to a better understanding of the compositional procedures used along 1950 and 1966, through the compositional and aural aspects.

The objective of this thesis is to trace a historic overview about the evolution of the trumpet technique throughout a chronological line which starts at Monteverdi and reaches Stockhausen with a focus on composer/instrument/interpreter. Primarily, we present a short context of the initial period and appoint the importance of the work Orfeo by Monteverdi, because this is the first time that the instrument integrates the orchestra in what we can call by art music. The summit of this process is the work Michael`s Journey Round The Earth, by Karlheinz Stockhausen, a monumental work which explores the expanded technique and can be considered one of the most relevant work for trumpet solo in XX century

This thesis addresses the multiplicity inherent in the musical manifestation and result of their performance factors. After the observation of the openings as ambiguities inherent in any artistic message and the performance as the defining moment of a musical work, Klavierstück XI by Karlheinz Stockhausen has been chosen as the object of study, because it is a representative work of the aesthetics of open work, with emphasis in the variables and unpredictability of performance. The work was investigated from its compositional design taking in consideration the musical thought of Stockhausen which determined features of the multiplicity of performance related to the interests of the composer in new conceptions of form and musical time. From this research, Klavierstück XI is observed in the context of performance practices. The thesis also presents strategies for a technicalinstrumental work, with a view to providing an interpretative approach more in line with the complex set of routes and connections proposed by the score. Finally, we seek to conclusions about whether such works as Klavierstück XI inaugurate new interpretive multiplicities or explore and enhance features that are implicit in the music for a long time / Doutorado / Doutor em Música

How the Darmstadt Internationale Ferienkurse Für Neue Musik Cultivated Solo Multiple Percussion Repertoire Through Graphic Notation and Indeterminacy

Cross, Kevin, Cross, Kevin January 2017 (has links)
The Darmstadt Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik (IFNM) contributed to the rise of solo multiple percussion music and compositional techniques found in early repertoire, including graphic notation and indeterminacy. John Cage wrote the first solo multiple percussion work (27' 10.554" for a Percussionist) in 1956, two years before he became involved at the Darmstadt IFNM. Cage then delivered a lecture at the courses in 1958 about indeterminacy, and the next year (1959) Stockhausen composed the second work for solo multiple percussion—Nr. 9 Zyklus—for the IFNM. In the same year, Stockhausen also delivered a lecture about graphic notation. Seven years later in 1966, Helmut Lachenmann—who was active at the IFNM since 1957—composed Intérieur I für einen Schlagzeugsolisten which utilizes graphic notation and indeterminacy. The three pieces by Cage, Stockhausen and Lachenmann will be examined in regards to how they employ graphic notation and indeterminacy and similarities and differences in how these techniques are used will be cited.

Electronic music instrument practice and the mechanisms of influence between technical design, performance practice and composition

Williams, Sean Barry Kelly January 2012 (has links)
This thesis examines the practices and techniques involved with particular electronic instruments and proposes an archaeological approach to reconsider the ways in which noise can communicate various details of instrument design and practice to the listener. I present two case studies concerning electronic music practice using repurposed devices - stepped filters - and by combining a detailed material analysis of the instruments with interviews, video and other evidence, I document the practices involved with their use. By rebuilding these instruments, and designing and building other devices, I test my hypotheses through my own practice, and by doing so I refine my results and extend my composition, performance practice and technical design skills to include valuable lessons learned through this research. The portfolio engages with the three archaeological levels (Listening Situation, Reproduction Stage, Production Environment) and the three areas of the production continuum (Composition, Performance Practice, Technical Design) and through sound installations, crafted media, recorded performances, and the documentation of devices designed for these pieces, it supports the thesis through experimentation and incorporation of results through reflective practice.

The Devil and the Details: Negotiating Virtuosity, Agency, and Authenticity in Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Kathinkas Gesang als Luzifers Requiem for Solo Flute

Chambo, Wayla Joy Ewart 05 1900 (has links)
Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Kathinkas Gesang als Luzifers Requiem presents mental, physical, and musical challenges that go beyond the usual expectations of an instrumentalist, extending and redefining the traditional idea of virtuosity. Using firsthand performance experience, score and recording study, and flutist interviews, this document explores the effects of some of these heightened demands and argues that the particular performance situation presented by Kathinkas Gesang brings up critical questions about the performer’s role, the nature of performance and of the musical work, and the existence of an authoritatively “authentic” interpretation. Employing an expanded definition of virtuosity that includes interpretation and encompasses both choices and actions, the document discusses the extensions of virtuosity into two main areas: first, memory; and second, staging and movement, covering both practical suggestions and larger implications. Finally, it examines how the performer’s negotiation of these challenges relates to questions about authenticity and agency. Performance is defined here as a creative and collaborative act, not attempting to duplicate previous performances or recordings, but rather to give the best realization of the piece possible in the given circumstances, according to the individual’s interpretation of the score’s directions. There is no single “authentic” interpretation, but rather a rich multiplicity of possibilities, and the performer’s creative agency and personal authenticity are necessary for the full realization of the work.

Liedbegleitung und künstlerische Identität. Zur Zusammenarbeit Clara Schumanns mit Julius Stockhausen

Günther, Martin 30 October 2020 (has links)
Clara Schumann’s impact on the history of piano playing and the development of 19th century concert life can hardly be denied. But understanding her pianistic career in terms of the work of a modern soloist covers the fact that she actually spent a large amount of time on stage not alone but performing together with colleagues. Taking a closer look at Clara Schumann’s collaboration with the baritone Julius Stockhausen, this article provides special insight into this field of her professional life: In addition to uncovering the contexts of collective concert programming and its reception it sheds light on the evolution of the Lied accompanist’s artistic identity in general and Clara Schumann’s specific ideal of communicating through musical performance.
