Hawk and Dove Stress Response Profiles in Humans

A recent evolutionary theory hypothesizes that there are two primary biobehavioral profiles of stress responding. Labeled "hawk" and "dove," each is characterized by divergent patterns of autonomic nervous system and neuroendocrine system activations in response to stress as well as distinct affective and behavioral tendencies. These profiles are prominent in a number of species, and it has been hypothesized that hawk-like and dovelike responses to stress may, in part, explain variability in stress-related health outcomes. This study is a preliminary investigation of hawk and dove biobehavioral profiles in humans. Participants included 73 Midwestern university students recruited from undergraduate-level psychology classes. Upon completion of a stressor task, participants answered questions regarding their psychological experiences during and immediately following the task and reported their emotions and health-related behaviors over the past several weeks. Physiological measures of cortisol and high frequency heart rate variability reactivity were used to identify relatively hawk-like and dove-like responders. Associations between patterns of physiological responding and emotional and behavioral responses were tested. The results showed mixed support for the existence of hawk and dove biobehavioral profiles in humans.

Organisms synthesize stress proteins in response to a variety of stressors. The 68/70-kDa proteins (synonymous to the 72/73-kDa proteins) have shown to be the most promising stress proteins, and have been proposed as a biomarker of general organismal stress. The 68/70-kDa proteins were used in an antigen/antibody based approach to determine the duration of the stress protein response of Pimephales promelas following an acute exposure to copper sulphate.

Factors related to stress in nursing students

The purpose of this review of literature was to explore and critically analyze relevant literature regarding stress factors and the consequences of stress in nursing students. Findings from this review of literature aimed to provide a better understanding of stress factors and the physical and psychological impact of stress on nursing students. Information was collected from the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, PsycINFO, and MEDLINE- EBSCOhost databases to explore what research has been conducted and to assess the current knowledge base. Analysis of the literature indicated that nursing students reported experiencing increased levels of stress during the academic year. Nursing students reported higher levels of stress in conjunction with elevated external stressors, including increased responsibilities and course requirements. Analysis of the findings suggested that factors related to stress in nursing students arose from clinical sources, academic sources, and personal sources. Further analysis indicated that experiencing elevated levels of stress had a negative impact on the student. Increased levels of stress, combined with poor coping mechanisms, may lead to poor academic performance and burn-out among nursing students. Future research may evaluate means to reduce stress levels and mitigate stress in nursing students through targeting specific causative factors. Findings from this review of literature aim to influence student management of stress.

Geometrically Nonlinear Stress Recovery in Composite Laminates

Composite laminates are increasingly being used as primary load bearing members in<br />structures.  However, because of the directional dependence of the properties of<br />composite materials, additional failure modes appear that are absent in<br />homogeneous, isotropic materials.  Therefore, a stress analysis of a composite<br />laminate is not complete without an accurate representation of the transverse<br />(out-of-plane) stresses.<br /><br />Stress recovery is a common method to estimate the transverse stresses from a<br />plate or shell analysis.  This dissertation extends stress recovery to problems<br />in which geometric nonlinearities, in the sense of von K\\\'rm\\\'{a}n,  are<br />important.  The current work presents a less complex formulation for the stress<br />recovery procedure for plate geometries, compared with other implementations,<br />and results in a post-processing procedure which can be applied to data from<br />any plate analyses; analytical or numerical methods, resulting in continuous or<br />discretized data.<br /><br />Recovered transverse stress results are presented for a variety of<br />geometrically nonlinear example problems: a semi-infinite plate subjected to<br />quasi-static transverse and shear loading, and a finite plate subjected to both<br />quasi-static and dynamic transverse loading.  For all cases, the corresponding<br />results from a fully three-dimensional stress analysis are shown alongside the<br />distributions from the stress recovery procedure.  Good agreement is observed<br />between the stresses obtained from each method for the cases considered.<br />Discussion is included regarding the applicability and accuracy of the<br />technique to varying plate geometries and varying degrees of nonlinearity, as<br />well as the viability of the procedure in replacing a three-dimensional<br />analysis in regard to the time required to obtain a solution.<br /><br />The proposed geometrically nonlinear stress recovery procedure results in<br />estimations for transverse stresses which show good correlation to the<br />three-dimensional finite element solutions.  The procedure is accurate for<br />quasi-static and dynamic loading cases and proves to be a viable replacement<br />for more computationally expensive analyses. / Ph. The purpose of this study was to examine the work-related stress among trainers and office workers through a survey that was constructed to address the research questions. Short-term stress can be explained as a primary physiological change in the body in form of secretion of adrenaline and norepinephrine, which enhances performances. There is also good evidence that physical activity can promote physical and mental health. If the body is exposed to short-term stress over a longer period, it has the opposite effect both mentally and physically. This study was built on a mixed method approach, with a mix of both quantitative and qualitative questions, which of most were quantitative. The survey was distributed to three different companies, with various work duties. Surveys were collected during two different times, with a significant amount the last time. It was thereby analyzed and coded into the program Excel (2016). Only considerable data was later presented to match the research questions. To conclude the results, 82 percent felt work-related stress, while 18 percent didn’t feel work-related stress. Many study participants often feel work-related stress, and more than half of the participants in the study do not know how to handle their work-related stress. The minority of participants however, feels a positive change in terms of achievement and well-being, which is the research area studied less between the negative and positive impact that stress may have. Work-related stress can further reflect today’s approach on stress and scientist have identified a need for further research on “eustress” (positive stress). / Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka den arbetsrelaterade stressen hos tränare och kontorsarbetare genom en enkätundersökning som konstruerades för att behandla forskningsfrågorna. Kortvarig stress kan förklaras som en primär fysiologisk förändring i kroppen i form av utsöndring av adrenalin och noradrenalin, vilket förbättrar prestationen. Det finns även god evidens på att fysisk aktivitet kan främja den fysiska och psykiska hälsan. Om kroppen utsätts för kortvarig stress under en längre period kan den ha motsatt effekt både mentalt och fysiskt. Studien byggde på ett ”mixed method” tillvägagångssätt, med en blandning av både kvantitativa och kvalitativa frågor, varav de flesta var kvantitativa. Enkätundersökningen distribuerades till tre olika företag, med olika arbetsuppgifter. Enkäterna samlades in under två olika tillfällen, och efter dessa två tillfällen fanns det tillräckligt med besvarade enkäter. Det analyserades och kodades efteråt i programmet Excel (2016). Endast betydande data presenterades för att besvara forskningsfrågorna. För att sammanfatta resultatet kände 82 procent arbetsrelaterad stress, medan 18 procent inte kände någon arbetsrelaterad stress. Många deltagare i enkätundersökningen kände ofta av arbetsrelaterad stress, och mer än hälften av deltagarna i studien visste inte hur de skulle hantera stressen. Minoriteten av deltagarna känner av en positiv förändring i fråga om prestation och välbefinnande, detta är forskningsområdet som studerats minst avseende den negativa och positiva inverkan som stress kan ha. Arbetsrelaterad stress kan ytterligare reflektera dagens synsätt på stress, och forskare har identifierat behovet av ytterligare undersökning på ”eustress” (positiv stress).

Due to employment equity legislation that opened up opportunities for women, women are under pressure to perform at work - something that may affect their occupational stress and impact on both the individual and the organisation. The respondents comprise six women managers in a market research organisastion. The respondents' perception of stress was supported by qualitative research methods and compared to the researcher's Organisational Stress Model. From the data it is evident that stressors at work such as workload, relationships, role overload and individual traits primarily affect the respondents' experience of stress. These stressors have an effect on respondents' perceptions of stress and impacts on their productivity and personal life. The respondents denoted a necessity for skills development in order to enhance themselves at work and on a personal level. The ecology of stress in work-related human systems

Individual distress in the work-place has been cited as the cause of enormous loss of productivity and income, and has therefore attracted much attention from researchers and therapists alike. However, an extensive literature study reveals that in the field of work-related distress and its management, there appears to be discontinuity, a diversity of opinion and even confusion with regard to definitions, causes and possible remedies for the problem. It is suggested that this situation has been brought about and is being perpetuated by the Newtonian/Cartesian epistemological foundation on which most thinking in the field is based. It is further suggested that an epistemology informed by ecosystemic, constructivist principles could facilitate a way of thinking which would be more useful in this context. A case study was done in accordance with the above-mentioned ideas, which served as an investigation of their usefulness in a situation of reported work-related stress. On the basis of the information which emerged from the study, it is concluded that an ecosystemic approach can indeed provide a useful basis for understanding such situations. Furthermore, it is suggested that there are certain commonalities between such situations which are primarily founded in contexts in which the individual finds himself faced with contradictory demands which are not acknowledged as such. Finally, the point is made that if, in accordance with a constructivist viewpoint, "stress" is understood to be a social construction rather than an absolute condition, then the traditional way of thinking provides us with descriptions of man, society and the relationship between them, which are negative and may also be reflexively destructive. However, since constructivism allows for a different construction to be brought forth, we may utilise ecosystemic thinking to provide a more optimistic view. / Psychology / D. Litt. et Phil. Etude de la protéine CIRP et sa fonction dans le métabolime de l'ARNm

La protéine CIRP (Cold Induced RNA binding Protein) est une petite protéine de liaison à l’ARN de 172 acides aminés, qui est constituée du côté amino-terminal d’un domaine de liaison à l’ARN de type RRM (RNA recognition motif), et d’une partie carboxy-terminale riche en glycine et arginine qui comprend plusieurs motifs RGG. Elle a été identifiée comme étant inductible par hypothermie mais aussi par irradiation aux UV et par hypoxie. Nous avons analysé son expression et sa localisation en réponse à différents stress cellulaires. Nous avons montré qu’un traitement à l’arsénite qui induit un stress oxydant n’altère pas l’expression de CIRP provoque sa localisation dans les granules de stress (SG). Les SG sont des structures ribonucléoprotéiques cytoplasmiques contenant des complexes de pré-initiation incompétents pour la traduction, et qui s’accumulent dans les cellules exposées à un stress. Ces structures constituent des sites de triages des ARNm, dans lesquels les ARNm sont soit stockés en attente d’une réinitiation de la traduction une fois le stress surmonté, soit destinés à être dégradés. La protéine CIRP se localise dans les SG que ce soit suite à un stress cytoplasmique ou du réticulum endoplasmique. Nous avons montré également que la localisation de la protéine CIRP dans les SG se déroule indépendamment de la présence de la protéine TIA-1 qui a été décrite comme responsable de l’assemblage des SG. De plus la surexpression de la protéine CIRP conduit à la formation de SG. Nous suggérons donc qu’il existe plusieurs voies qui mènent à l’assemblage de ces structures. En outre, nous avons analysé la localisation de mutants par délétion de la protéine CIRP et avons montré que le domaine RRM et le domaine RGG peuvent indépendamment localiser la protéine dans les SG. Par contre, la méthylation des résidus arginine du domaine RGG est une modification nécessaire à la localisation de CIRP dans les SG. Ensuite, nous avons étudié la fonction de la protéine CIRP dans le métabolisme des ARN messagers. Nous avons montré par une méthode d’adressage, que CIRP est un répresseur de la traduction des ARNm et que le domaine carboxy-terminal est nécessaire et suffisant à cette fonction.
