Detta projekt drevs på uppdrag av Optikbutiken som behövde en tjänst där mankunde betala sin order med hjälp av kreditkort på deras aktuella hemsida. Det härprojektet gick ut på att integrera DIBS vilket är ett betalsystem för kreditkort.Utvecklingen skedde i Visual Studio miljö. De krav som ställdes upp för det härprojektet blev uppfyllda.

Intuition vs teknik? : Om metoder för vokalt uttryck vid studioinspelning

Under alla mina år som sångerska har jag alltid haft som största problem att beröra människor med mitt uttryck utanför scenen. Det vill säga när jag spelar in sång i studio och allt kroppsspråk samt all publikkontakt fattas i ekvationen. Jag har aktivt jobbat hårt med detta från ett sångarperspektiv i flera år och hittat olika vägar för att förstärka min kommunikation från studiorummet till högtalarna. Det jag ville göra med detta arbete var att isolera tre olika tekniker jag har provat på för att se om ett av dem är allra mest effektivt för att beröra lyssnaren. Jag har länge jobbat som sångproducent och tog steget till musikproducent för ett par år sedan. Följaktligen ville jag även jobba från ett producentperspektiv och ge både sångaren och producenten i mig utmaningen att generera ett så starkt uttryck som möjligt. Utmaningen ligger framförallt i att sångaren i mig ofta försöker låta fint medan producenten i mig har som huvuduppgift att vara objektiv och titta på vad som genererar mest uttryck. Jag har skrivit en låt specifikt till det här arbetet som jag spelat in 3 gånger; en helt intuitiv version, en sångtekniskt planerad version samt en manipulerad version. Den intuitiva är från ett sångarperspektiv, den sångtekniskt planerade är en kombination av sång och produktion och den manipulerade är helt baserad på producentval. Jag använde mig i slutskedet av en referensgrupp på 10 personer för att se om jag lyckades nå fram till dem som lyssnare så de berördes. Jag ställde frågan ”Blev du berörd av någon version?” rakt ut till dem och fick 10 stycken ”Ja” tillbaka. Mitt syfte med arbetet var att se om jag kunde konkretisera ett arbetssätt för att lättare hitta ett uttryck som berör. Utifrån referensernas svar och mina egna upplevelser kände jag att jag lyckades.

Collaborative computer music composition and the emergence of the computer music designer

This submission explores the development of collaborative computer music creation and the role of the Musical Assistant, or Computer Music Designer, or Live Electronics Designer, or RIM (Réalisateur en informatique musicale) and does so primarily through the consideration of a series of collaborations with composers over the last 18 years. The submission documents and evaluates a number of projects which exemplify my practice within collaborative computer music creation, whether in the form of live electronics, tape-based or fixed media work, as a live electronics performer, or working with composers and others to create original tools and music for artistic creations. A selection of works is presented to exemplify archetypes found within the relational structures of collaborative work. The relatively recent development of this activity as an independent metier is located within its historical context, a context in which my work has played a significant role. The submission evidences the innovative aspects of that work and, more generally, of the role of the Computer Music Designer through consideration of a number of Max patches and program examples especially created for the works under discussion. Finally, the validation of the role of the Computer Music Designer as a new entity within the world of music creation is explored in a range of contexts, demonstrating the ways in which Computer Music Designers not only collaborate in the creation of new work but also generate new resources for computer-based music and new creative paradigms.

This dissertation is the result of in interest in the progression of media-technologies within the urban context. Large media billboards scattered along major vehicular routes, also advertisements and information displayed on the facades of buildings have become synonymous with the urban fabric. The intent of this dissertation is to determine the relationship between media-technologies and the social organizations of the city. Can one consider these technologies as generators for social interaction and the broadening of the urban cultural content? Media-technologies are becoming increasingly popular in the use of public spaces, signifying the ability and opportunity for these systems to create an interactive relationship with the user. The theme of the discourse is the creation of a Music Television production centre in Prinshof, a neglected part of the Pretoria inner city. Establishing an entertainment based development in this already vibrant area, might contribute to the systematic rejuvenation of this lower to middle-income community. What is the relationship between creativity and conflict in a studio recording environment?

This research covers collaborations in a studio recording environment and the interrelations between conflict and creativity. The aim was to find what the relationship between creativity and conflict is in a studio recording environment and what different ways there are of managing conflict and the purpose of this was to further the understanding of these concepts and their place, for engineers, producers and musicians to make better use of moments of conflict. A literary review was made to outline and present the key elements of collaborations in studio recording, previous research on creativity and definitions of conflict and creativity. Examining this literary review brought forward a few concepts that then came to be the base on which this study lies. An ethnographic study was conducted with the band Baron’s Court. The band was observed while recording an album and later interviewed to share their experience of the recording session and their thoughts about this topic. There were trends and patterns found in the footage from the observation and in the interviews that allowed for elaborations on how different creative approaches can impact the kind of conflict that might occur and the different ways of managing conflict. The trends and patterns were compared to the findings in the literary review.

Orientador: João Antonio Pereira / Resumo: A indústria fonográfica com o advento dos equipamentos digitais de gravação sofreu grandes transformações nos últimos anos. A mudança mais marcante é a migração dos músicos que antes trabalhavam com grandes gravadoras e hoje trabalham de forma independente, com estúdios construídos ou adaptados em suas residências, os chamados home studios. Seja em um grande estúdio profissional de gravação, ou em um home studio, o estudo da acústica do local é imprescindível para se obter boa qualidade nas gravações. Uma das áreas aplicadas da acústica é a avaliação e desenvolvimento de ambientes utilizados para gravações de áudio. Essa área contempla diversas avaliações de grande valia, quando se trata da garantia da qualidade acústica das salas em um home studio. Reverberações, isolamento sonoro, entre outras variáveis de projeto definem parâmetros acústicos do ambiente. A obtenção destes parâmetros e adaptações do local para diferentes usos, entre outras características utilizadas para avaliação da qualidade sonora dos ambientes, podem ser dadas através do estudo e avaliação do modelo acústico do estúdio, visto que esses parâmetros estão diretamente relacionados com os materiais construtivos, dimensões e arquitetura do ambiente. Este trabalho teve como objetivo o estudo do efeito desses parâmetros na acústica dos ambientes e a criação de modelos numéricos representativos de predição acústica, a partir da análise e avaliação em dois estúdios diferentes. One of the applied areas of acoustics is the valuation and development of enviroments used for audio recordings. This front of study includes many evaluations of great worth when it comes to guaranteeing the acoustic quality in a home studio. For my BFA Capstone exhibition Preying For a Miracle I analyzed the Biblical book of Job found in the Old Testament in relation to my own life. My interest in the Book of Job stems from a human desire to understand suffering, especially suffering that is unprovoked. At the beginning of the book of Job, Job is described as “blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil”. (Job 1:1) As the first chapter of the book progresses, Satan comes to God and presents a wager. Satan insinuates that Job is only faithful to God because God has “put a hedge around him”. (Job 1:9) Satan proposes that he can make Job curse God’s name if he removes the abundant blessings he has received. God accepts this wager and declares that as long as Job’s life is spared Satan can do with him as he wants, which begins a series of brutal trials. I found myself asking how can such violence and human suffering be justified?

“I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues”: Considering the Music of Harold Arlen (1905-1986) for Use by Female Singers in the Classical Voice Studio

American musical theater and film composer Harold Arlen is largely overshadowed by his contemporaries, such as George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, and Cole Porter. However, his music serves as a viable alternative for singers of all skill level studying a classical technique. By studying the music of Harold Arlen, singers will utilize a wide range, legato line, negotiations of register, mood shifts, and varying tessituras. The following document considers the importance of Arlen’s music by analyzing eight of his songs from three prominent decades of compositional output. The eight songs examined are grouped by the decade of their composition: the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. Each song is evaluated by determining the musical benefits included in each song and also the skill level required of the singer.

Inspelning och musikproduktion av ”modern retro" : Att förstå den konstnärliga processen

I detta konstnärliga projekt har jag agerat producent och planerat för och genomfört en inspelning av två nyskrivna låtar med mitt band. I denna uppsats har jag undersökt hela den konstnärliga processen noggrant för att förstå vad som händer i den och hur man kommer fram till och kan påverka resultatet. Jag har även valt ut två musikaliska referenser och tagit reda på hur deras produktionsmetoder sett ut och jämfört dem med varandra, samt tagit inspiration därifrån till min egen process. Reflektionerna kring processen kretsar främst kring de tekniska och fysiska förutsättningarna inspelningen har haft och den beslutsfattande roll jag som producent har haft. Detta har resulterat i två grundmixar som ska produceras vidare. Låtarna är inspelade på ett sätt som kan mixas för att matcha flera olika ljudideal och kommer därmed med stor sannolikhet kunna uppfylla min vision av produktionen senare. I den avslutande diskussionen redogör jag mina insikter om att tid och pengar är stora faktorer för vilka förutsättningar man har, vikten av att vara förberedd för att kunna vara tidseffektiv i studion, samt att det mesta går att lösa ändå med hjälp av noga förberedelser och planering.
