An analysis of the impact of learning environment factors on retention and attrition in adult Sunday School classes

Wilson, Darryl Haskel 01 May 2003 (has links)
This dissertation identified and analyzed the impact of learning environment factors on the retention and attrition of members of adult Sunday School classes in Kentucky Baptist Convention churches. The study was delimited to spiritual, physical, and social learning environment factors internal to adult classes meeting at church on Sunday led by the same teacher for the previous twelve months. The research questions focused on the strength and relationships of these factors and demographic data gathered. Precedent literature was investigated next. First, since adults in Sunday School study the Bible, an understanding of the impact of God and theological assumptions was presented. Then, adult learning assumptions, learning environment factors, and retention and attrition (assimilation) issues were applied to the context of adult Sunday School classes. Because limited literature was available addressing these issues in the church, resources from a diversity of fields were utilized, analyzed, and applied to this setting. The methodological design of the research involved creating and validating a research instrument, contacting and training church leaders, surveying classes on Sunday morning, and mailing instruments to no/low attenders. The random proportionally stratified sample included teachers and members of adult classes in nineteen KBC churches of the Long Run Baptist Association (Louisville area). The two instruments (teacher and member) contained seventy-two statements utilizing a Likert response scale along with twenty-two and sixteen demographic variables, respectively. Chronbach alpha reliability testing of the 762 instruments produced a score of .8801. In the analysis of findings, means, modes, medians, standard deviations, rankings, cross tabulations, percentages, and ANOVA data were provided to help answer the six research questions. The statements were combined into twenty-four triangulated learning environment factors in response to precedent literature. The strength of spiritual, physical, and social factors were examined along with the impact of retention (high/average attenders) and attrition (low/no attenders) and various demographic variables. Tables and figures helped to display findings in helpful ways. Conclusions drawn from the research findings were that spiritual and social learning environment factors did impact retention and attrition of the adult Sunday School classes in the sample. The impact of friends upon high/average attenders was evident, as was the impact of the teacher upon low/no attenders. Even though physical factors did not impact retention and attrition, several findings need application in the local church such as flexibility and physical arrangement. Several suggestions for further research were presented, including replication and utilization of the instrumentation and methodology in other locations and other denominations. Focusing on part of the learning environment factors could also produce helpful results. / This item is only available to students and faculty of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Entre borrões e cadáveres: os sermões de Dominga da Quaresma de Antônio Vieira / Among blots and cadavers: the sermons Sunday of Lent of Antonio Vieira

Pinto, Rodrigo Gomes de Oliveira 29 April 2009 (has links)
Sunday of Lent sermons by Father Antônio Vieira are of interest in conformity to their contemporary practices of production and reception. Historically, they had been composed to circulate in written form and to be published dispersed in the volumes of the editio princeps of the Sermões between 1679 and 1699. Nevertheless, from the moment they were printed they were direct to a reader who was, in a way, distant from the preaching, which is framed, even though circimstantially, in the pages. So as to discuss these Lent sermons, notions of ductus and eschematisménos lógos are fundamental. The former is read in Fortunatianus and Marcianus Capella, systematized by Heinrich Lausberg and debated by Vieiras readers. The latter aims to cast light on the lessons of these so-called rhetores latini minoris and also to give foundation to the readings of the sermons from excerpts of other texts, other doctrines, and Greek and Latin rhetoricians, as Quintilian, Demetrius, Hermogenes and, in the fifteenth century, George of Trebizond.

The phenomenon of Sunday newspapering in Namibia, with special focus on the Namibia Sunday Express

Adams, Kevin Oswin 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Sunday newspapering in Namibia is non-existent from a local perspective, save for the South African newspapers Rapport and Sunday Times, which have become like household products over the years. Sunday reporting in Namibia ceased in the mid 1990s when the tabloid Tempo closed down. A more recent attempt in the form of the Namibia Sunday Express lasted for little more than a year between May 2002 and August 2003. Changing its content to feature business news only (and subsequently changing its name to Business Express) proved less successful as the newspaper only appeared once in October 2003. This was also its final appearance. This study looks at the phenomenon of Sunday newspapering in general; why people read such newspapers; the pitfalls associated with Sunday publications; the possible reasons for failure of Namibian Sunday newspapering; the future of Sunday newspapers in a country such as Namibia; and more particularly looks at the Namibia Sunday Express as a ease study.
