An Analysis of the Teaching Aids Provided for Sunday School Teachers in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Teaching is, and always has been, important in the work of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As one of the auxiliaries of the Church, the Sunday School has made an ongoing effort to provide effective teaching aids for its teachers in order to improve instruction in the Church. This work documents and examines change in principles of gospel teaching over the course of a century. By comparing teaching aids provided for Gospel Doctrine teachers in different time periods with guidelines found in the scriptures and words of modern prophets this work seeks to increase understanding of themes and fundamentals of inspired teaching in the Church.

Hierdie probleem moet deur die praktiese teologie aangespreek word, want kategetiese onderrig is 'n kommunikatiewe handeling in diens van die evangelie. Die praktiese teologie kan 'n bydrae lewer deur die polivorme en polivalente leefwereld van die jeugdige (as praxis) te beskryf en te verklaar, sodat tot groter insig in die geloofswereld van die jeugdige gekom kan word, maar ook wee verken waardeur die jeugdige effektief met die Evangelie bereik kan word. Onderhawige studie poog om langs beskrywend-analitiese weg ervaringsleer as aanbiedingswyse te ondersoek met die doel om te bepaal of ervaringsleer moontlikhede bied wat kan verseker dat skrifwaarhede effektief ontsluit word. Die vertrekpunt in die studie is die leerparadigmatiese en 'n konstruktivistiese benadering tot leer word gevolg. Die meriete van die benutting van ervaringsleer moet gesien word vanuit 'n prakties-teologiese vertrekpunt waar die praxis krities ondersoek is met die doel om kommunikatiewe handelinge tussen jeugwerker en jeugdige in diens van die evangelie te optimaliseer. / Indications are that youth, after twelve years of catechetical instruction, still have superficial knowledge, understanding and insight into biblical truths. This problem must be addressed within practical theology, because catechetical instruction is a communicative action in evangelical service. The practical theology can make a contribution by describing and interpreting the multifarious and multifaceted world of the youth (as praxis). In this way, greater insight can be gained into the spiritual life of the youth and ways can be explored to reach youth more effectively with the Word. This study, by means of a descriptive and analytical review of experiential learning, attempts to determine whether experiential learning could be used to effectively disclose biblical truths. The approach was based on the learning paradigm and a constructivistic view of learning. Representations of blackness in post-1994 black-centred films: an analysis of Conversations on a Sunday afternoon (2005), When we were black (2007) and State violence (2011)

A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in African Languages. Wits University, Johannesburg, 2015 / This report interrogates the representation of blackness in post-1994 black-centred films in South Africa. With a particular focus on Khalo Matabane’s films, I analyse Conversations on a Sunday Afternoon (2005), When We Were Black (2007) and State of Violence (2011) across a spectrum of themes. I also interrogate and introduce several critical concepts such as ‘blackness’, ‘the image of blackness’, ‘black identity’, ‘masculinity’, ‘femininity’, ‘the Gaze’ and ‘Otherness’. These concepts are interlinked in ways that bring about an understanding of the concept of black-centred films, which is central to the research report. Amidst the different interpretations of black-centred films, the vantage point from which the concept is used is interested in black-centred films as films that are made by a black filmmaker, whose content addresses issues of blackness and is targeted at a black audience. However, these three factors need not always resonate in a single film in order for it to be considered and analysed as a black-centred film. The lens through which Matabane holds the camera questions his representation of the black image and whether it is from an insider or outsider’s perspective. The view from which Matabane holds the camera is important in establishing whether he has purported to represent historically stereotypical images of blackness, or whether his endeavours in filmmaking are occupied by the relentless pursuit to present new images of blackness.

Through a case study involving the techniques of observation, two families were selected for a detailed study. The instruments used to develop this research was semi-structured interviews, the observation of the religious cult and the Sunday School practices development in the weekends, and the analysis of the pedagogical material used in the Sunday School. The objective was to observe the practices of literacy to which children and adults were exposed. The following hypothesis guided the research: the learning practices of the Sunday School and the family relationship, although based on the religion dogmas, involves literacy exercises that encourage the development of skills of writing in children. The study group was composed by two children in school age (between ten and thirteen years old) and their families. The reading and writing practices of the select families was analyzed through the concepts of habitus and cultural capital (Bourdieu, 2007) and family configuration (Lahire, 2004). It was observed that the investigated religious field has solid social values that contribute positively to the learning process of the younglings through the social practices development in the Sunday School. Thus, the embodiment of cultural capital as habitus and the ways of production of symbolic goods in the religious field has contribute to the development of writing, reading and interpretation skills of the select group / A pesquisa examinou a influência das práticas religiosas da Igreja Metodista e de sua escola dominical sobre o processo de letramento, durante o ano de 2008. Por meio de um estudo de caso que envolve as técnicas de observação, duas famílias foram selecionadas para um estudo aprofundado. Os instrumentos utilizados para empreender a pesquisa foram entrevistas semi-estruturadas, a observação das práticas desenvolvidas nos finais de semana durante o culto religioso, na escola dominical e a análise do material pedagógico utilizado na escola dominical. O objetivo era o de observar as práticas de letramento aos quais crianças e adultos eram expostos. A seguinte hipótese norteou a pesquisa: as práticas de aprendizagem na escola dominical e as relações familiares, embora fundamentados no dogma religioso, envolvem exercícios de letramento que favorecem a habilidade da escrita pelas crianças. O público alvo foi formado por duas crianças em idade escolar (entre dez e treze anos de idade) assim como as suas famílias. As práticas de leitura e escrita das famílias selecionadas foram analisadas a partir dos conceitos de habitus e capital cultural (Bourdieu, 2007) e de configurações familiares (Lahire, 2004). Observou-se que o ambiente religioso investigado possui sólidos valores sociais, os quais influenciam positivamente no processo de aprendizado dos jovens através de práticas sociais desenvolvidas na escola dominical. Sendo assim, a incorporação do capital cultural na forma de habitus e dos esquemas de reprodução de bens simbólicos existentes no ambiente religioso contribui para o desenvolvimento das habilidades de escrita, leitura e interpretação do grupo selecionado

However, it is often noticed that there is a separation among personal, social life and religion, affecting the way communities celebrate, where people's lives are not tied to the liturgy and the latter, in turn, is not tied to people´s lives The believer´s life and the history of the humanity are not understood as Passover connected to the Passover of Jesus. Therefore, by analyzing documents 43 and 52 of the Brazilian Bishops and some elements of the liturgical tradition, as well as in the Church General Magisterium about life in the celebration, the aim of this paper is to highlight elements that encourage the integration between life and liturgy, especially regarding the Sunday Celebration of God´s Word. Such search will also verify that the liturgy celebrates the Passover happening in people's lives and history without making use of its authenticity and that the Sunday Celebration of God‟s Word authenticity resides in celebrating life as a Paschal process, as a passage from death to life, thanks to the liberating intervention of God. As principais linhas teóricas utilizadas na interpretação da pesquisa tratam da formação do hábito de ver televisão, do contrato afetivo entre o fluxo da grade de programação e o telespectador e do Princípio da Razão Durante através da teoria do Metáporo. Texto multidisciplinar que reúne teóricos de Comunicação, Estudo de TV, Estudos Culturais, Sociologia, Filosofia para construir um corpo teórico que trata de entender estratégias utilizadas pelas emissoras para montar a grade de programação e de como a grade se torna um específico da TV, um produto audiovisual único e fluído e uma forma discursiva estratégica das empresas de comunicação. / Research in Communication within the Audiovisual Media Process area focused on the broadcast Sunday Brazilian TV programming strategies. It emphasizes the Sunday programming due to be the day with the largest number of viewers watching TV and due to one of the days that gets more visibility to the media products and production. The main theoretical lines used in the research are about the habit of watching TV, the emotional contract established between the programming flow and the TV viewer and also the Princípio da Razão Durante (Ongoing Principle) through the Metaporo´s theory. Multidisciplinary text gathering theories from Communication, TV Studies, Cultural Studies, Sociology and Philosophy to build a theoretic body of work to understand the strategies used by the TV stations and networks to form the programming grid and how the grid becomes TV´s specific language, one fluid and exclusive audiovisual product and also an strategic discursive form belonging to the communication enterprises.

Faith, Fiction, and Fame: Sowing Seeds in Danny and Anne of Green Gables

In 1908, two Canadian women published first novels that became instant best-sellers. Nellie McClung's Sowing Seeds in Danny initially outsold Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables, but by 1965 McClung's book had largely disappeared from Canadian consciousness. The popularity of Anne, on the other hand, has continued to the present, and Anne has received far more academic and critical attention, especially since 1985. It is only recently that Anne of Green Gables has been criticized for its ideology in the same manner as Sowing Seeds in Danny. The initial question that inspired this dissertation was why Sowing Seeds in Danny disappeared from public and critical awareness while Anne of Green Gables continued to sell well to the present day and to garner critical and popular attention into the twenty-first century. In light of the fact that both books have in recent years come under condemnation and stand charged with maternal feminism, imperial motherhood, eugenics, and racism, one must ask further why this has now happened to both Danny and Anne. What has changed? The hypothesis of the dissertation is that Danny's relatively speedy disappearance was partly due to a shift in Canadians' religious worldview over the twentieth century as church attendance and biblical literacy gradually declined. McClung's rhetorical strategies look back to the dominant Protestantism of the nineteenth century, in contrast to Montgomery's, which look forward to the twentieth-century's waning of religious faith. Although there is enough Christianity in Montgomery's novel to have made it acceptable to her largely Christian reading public at the beginning of the century, its presentation is subtle enough that it does not disturb or baffle a twenty-first-century reader in the way McClung's does. McClung's novel is so forthright in its presentation of Christianity, with its use of nineteenth-century tropes and conventions and with its moralising didacticism, that the delightful aspects of the novel were soon lost to an increasingly secular reading public. Likewise, the recent critical challenges to both novels spring from a worldview at odds with the predominantly Christian worldview of 1908. The goal of the dissertation has been to read Sowing Seeds in Danny and Anne of Green Gables within the religious contexts of a 1908 reader in order to avoid an unquestioning twenty-first-century censure of these novels, and to ascertain the reasons for their divergent popularity and recent critical condemnation.

Salvation from empire : the roots of Anishinabe Christianity in Upper Canada

This thesis examine the cultural interaction between Anishinabe people, who lived in what is now southern Ontario, and the Loyalists, Euroamerican settlers who moved north from the United States during and after the American Revolution. Starting with an analysis of Anishinabe cultural history before the settlement era the thesis argues that Anishinabe spirituality was not traditionalist. Rather it inclined its practitioners to search for new knowledge. Further, Anishinabe ethics in this period were determined corporately based on the immediate needs and expectations of individual communities. As such, Anishinabe ethics were quite separate from Anishinabe spiritual teachings. Between 1760 and 1815, the Anishinabe living north of the Great Lakes participated in pan-Native resistance movements to the south. The spiritual leaders of these movements, sometimes called nativists, taught that tradition was an important religious virtue and that cultural integration was dangerous and often immoral. These nativist teachings entered the northern Anishinabe cultural matrix and lived alongside earlier hierarchies of virtue that identified integration and change as virtues. When Loyalist Methodists presented their teachings to the Anishinabeg in the early nineteenth century their words filtered through both sets of teachings and found purchase in the minds of many influential leaders. Such leaders quickly convinced members of their communities to take up the Methodist practices and move to agricultural villages. For a few brief years in the 1830s these villages achieved financial success and the Anishinabe Methodist leaders achieved real social status in both Anishinabe and Euroamerican colonial society. By examining the first generation of Anishinabe Methodists who practiced between 1823 and 1840, I argue that many Anishinabe people adopted Christianity as new wisdom suitable for refitting their existing cultural traditions to a changed cultural environment. Chiefs such as Peter Jones (Kahkewahquonaby), and their followers, found that Methodist teachings cohered with major tenets of their own traditions, and also promoted bimadziwin, or health and long life, for their communities.
