roofless

Unknown Date (has links)
Here, the natural world is consumed - a physical reality and an internal one. It is walled, but roofless - a contained space. Elements are absorbed, same energies interacting within us that work around us - the natural forces of gravitation and electromagnetism, fire and water, growth, and time. Fundamental interactions in nature, forces that hold the universe together are treated as symbolic of the human experience. The sense of rooflessness is an essential theme to my thesis. There is a constant return to the sky. The shifting clouds, the stages of the sun and the moon mimic a traveling through time, a constant change. There is a given feeling of freedom and confinement. There is a vulnerability, a destitution, and a lack of shelter. The open sky, always out of reach, is a tease to be free. Though it also hints at a feeling of oneness, a symbolic relation between the divine and the human. The open, uninterrupted path for direct prayer. Roofless indicates a continuous linkage between the ground and the sky, between rain and dirt, between nature and humankind. . / by Sahar Rehman. / Thesis (M.F.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2011. / Electronic reproduction. \'A vida será literaturizada\': a escrita epistolar de Italo Svevo / Life will be literaturized: Italo Svevo\'s epistolary writing

Thaís Helena de Barros Neves Cavalcanti 15 August 2017 (has links)
Italo Svevo\'s epistolary, first published in 1966, offers itself to the critic as a tangle of problems that can be interpreted using multiple approaches: historical, linguistic, literary etc. After recognizing in the letters of the Triestino writer a series of themes also developed in his literary works, we proposed the hypothesis that the letters became for him a writing laboratory. He could exercise his language, his literary procedures and still construct for an image of himself as an artist. In order to demonstrate the validity of our hypothesis, we investigated the epistolary personae constructed throughout the correspondence of the writer and how they contributed both to the creation of literary characters and to the elaboration of an authorial scenography. After that we did a comparative analysis between some of Italo Svevo\'s letters to his wife and some excerpts from his novel Zeno\'s Conscience, verifying to what extent the themes were reproduced or transformed within the novel structure. At the end of this dissertation, we present the annotated translation of some letters of the writer as a complement to the observations developed here.

Stress Cr?nico e temas de vida: uma proposta cognitivo-comportamental para conceitualiza??o / Chronic stress and lives themes: a cognitive-behavioral purpose for conceptualization

Benzoni, Paulo Eduardo 13 February 2008 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Paulo Eduardo Benzoni.pdf: 990162 bytes, checksum: 2c656c2ab7fb5cf260410fddc0640b12 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-02-13 / The stress field has been studied so much where data have demonstrated that in average, more than half of the population of big cities present stress. Stress comes from inner factors (vulnerabilities) and outer ones (environment demands), however, when it is worked on the treatment area itself, it has been observed that some individuals present a sort of persistent behavior which take them to be involved in stressful situations. It is regarded as Lipp nominated: Lives Themes. It is presented on this term a purpose of diagnosis and enlargement of the concept on Lives Themes, grounded on the cognitivebehavioral approach. It was also developed a theorist model of cognitive basis that could explain the problematic of lives themes on chronic stress, such model purposes the individual once attracted by a discriminative stimulus, he activates a scheme which figures out the reality, stirring a sort of inappropriate behavior that takes him to get involved in a stressful situation once there is no appropriate audience of coping , it comes up stress and everything is explained by a belief. Nine participants were evaluated, all of them on chronic stress, where there were five from a physiotherapy clinic-school and others from a psychotherapy private office, all of them under physical and psychological illnesses. They were evaluated through a semi-structured interview, Inventory on Stress Symptoms for adults by Lipp, Inventory of Life and Questionnaires of Schemes by Young. It was made from the purposed theorist model, a model of conceptualization on the Lives Themes, from which all the cases were studied and evaluated. The group s analysis let us to identify the self-sacrifice schemes and inflexible standards as the strongest (hardest) ones and the failure scheme as the weakest one, what enabled to infer that people under chronic stress tend to turn to others, with top-high goals and do not accept failures. It was also observed the presence of factors of behavior and parenthood practices on the development of maladaptative initial schemes which seem to fit the retraced standards of stress, and furthermore, it was also identified the broken (inappropriate) learning of strategies of coping , which turns more difficult the individual under Lives Themes, get rid of this stressful situation, as well as the presence of a discriminative stimulus which stirs the retraced standards of behavior that takes the individual to stressful situations. Finally, it was confirmed the presence of dysfunctional belief that justifies for the individual his situation of being involved constantly in the same stressful situation. The results pointed for the maintenance of the initial hypothesis purposed on the Lives Themes, as well as corroborated for the theorist model purposed.

Responsabilidade civil e a transfusão de sangue / Civil responsibility and blood transfusion

Nunes, Helena Ferreira 04 August 2010 (has links)
The standardization of homoterapy under the legislation led to a integration of Medicine and Law. With the ease of access to the judicial system, a lot of lawsuits were filed against hospitals and medicine professionals involved in the blood transfusion process seeking reparation of losses due to the activity. On one side are the medicine professionals that sometimes have a lack of knowledge of their partial or full obligations under the law, and on the other side we have the judicial system and its obligation to seek repair for the patients involved. This work`s main objective is to analyze the impacts and interfaces between the homoterapic activity and the legal implications for civil liability under the brazilian law. For this work we analyzed: current brazilian law and regulations applied for the transfusion process; specific blood transfusion literature; statutes, regulations and ethical codes for health professionals who are involved in the process; yearbooks, articles and regulations manuals of haemovigilance organizations; and, especifically the Standardization for the usage of blood and blood products established by \"Hospital das Clinicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo\" \"Comissão de Avaliação e Controle em Medicina Transfusional (CACTM)\". Although no one can deny that blood transfusion is a efficient therapy that has been extensively applied in modern medicine, complications may occur during or after the process. The World Health Organization, the Heath Ministry and the medical literature recognize the inherent risks in the process. The most critical moment in blood transfusion therapy is the transfusion decision wich must be based on technical criteria and on the patient clynical conditions, since this is the occasion when the professional will have to make the decision to expose the patient to all the risks involved. This evaluation has to be based on technical knowledge since this knowledge will be needed to prescribe and administrate the blood components. Brazilian Civil Code regulates that damages related to risk activities be repared by objective responsability, however, it also estipulates that area professionals that cause damage to a third party will be legally responsible for their act. The same understanding is also very clear under the consumer defense code wich also mentions the situations involving blood transfusion procedures. The knowledge of the transfusional procedure and the rules related to the activity allows us to establish the guidelines relating to the individual responsabilities of the process. In this case, doctors, nurses and all professionals involved in the transfusion procedure will be eventually responsible for damages only if imprudence, malpractice or negligence is found to be the case. On the other hand, all hemotherapic services, hospitals and any other institutions involved in process will also be liable for damages caused to a third party.

Laylá Ba‘albakī and feminism throughout her fiction

Igbaria, Khaled January 2015 (has links)
A number of Lebanese women writers of the period of 1950s and 1960s have received considerable attention by scholars. This is not the case, however, for Laylá Ba‘albakī, whom the field has failed to address in any substantive manner. In not paying sufficient attention to Laylá Ba‘albakī, the field has failed to appreciate the distinctly feminist dimension of her work. To date, most scholars have only repeated commonly held views about her and her fiction. By addressing Ba‘albakī’s biography and fiction, this thesis hopes to contribute to a fuller understanding of Lebanese women writers of 1950s and 1960s. It shows that Ba‘albakī joined the group Shi‘r, but none of the Lebanese or Syrian political parties; and that she faced conflict not only with her parents, community and the state, but also, unexpectedly, with the Lebanese women’s groups. This study discusses the reasons why Ba‘albakī was brought before the courts, supporting the view that the underlying reason was political, not moral; and it further explores the reasons why the writer ceased publishing. It now seems probable that she will soon release a new work, after a long hiatus, which may be controversial within Muslim and Arab society. Moreover, this thesis shows that throughout her novels and short stories there is diversity in styles and techniques, and the use of poetic and figurative language which displays the influence of several Arab and Western poets (including her father’s own zajal poetry). Furthermore, the study focuses in particular on feminist themes in her work, and the various literary devices she employs for advancing her feminist agenda. The study of these devices further supports the claim that the court case against her was motivated by politics, not ethics. This thesis opens the doors for new discussions such as the impacts of her being Shiite as and when sources become available.

Title tunes and the branding of music in Hollywood film franchises

Codsi, Marie-Claude January 2018 (has links)
The use of leitmotifs in films has often been critiqued. Theodor Adorno and Hanns Eisler went as far as to claim in 1947 that "The whole form language of current cinema music derives from advertising" and that leitmotifs were in part to blame. While I take a more neutral stance, I argue that Eisler and Adorno's critique is partly correct, especially in regards to film series produced from the 1960s onwards. The analytical work undertaken for this research suggests that multiple franchises use elements of their scores as branding tools. I argue that these melodies, which have often been referred to as leitmotifs in film music scholarship, should be described as something else: title tunes. It seems that over time, they come to represent not just one or two movies, but entire franchises. They also appear to possess a marketing value not necessarily present in leitmotifs. As such, I would argue these title tunes resemble much more sonic logos as described in the sonic branding world than leitmotifs. This thesis is an exploration of title tunes. My thesis focuses primarily on mainstream Hollywood film franchises from the 1960s onwards. Various case studies from different time periods and different movie genres are analysed to describe and understand this new category of promotional film music. This thesis first takes a historical look at the concept of title tunes, explaining how other sonic branding practices used in radio, television and cinema appear to have influenced the creation of title tunes. From the sample of films analysed for this thesis, I argue that title tunes share commonalities, yet the commonalities seem to vary slightly across movie genres. The analyses undertaken also suggest that title tunes are dynamic entities, that some title tunes are more complex than others (featuring multiple components), and that some franchises can feature more than one title tune. My interpretation of the data also suggests that these title tunes are used as emotional and nostalgic tools and that specific orchestrations and arrangements might carry additional emotional power. While the majority of this thesis explores the use of title tunes in films, their use in trailers and other commodities is discussed. Finally, I suggest how title tunes might change in the future and why certain franchises have omitted using such recurring motifs.

School-Based Sexual Violence Prevention: An Analysis of the 2015 Ontario Curriculum in Light of Themes Present in the Literature and the Social Norm Approach

Sathianathan, Sarmatha 24 October 2019 (has links)
Sexual violence is experienced by a number of North American women who, after being victimized, can develop a series of physical, psychological and financial consequences. As such, it is necessary to develop policies and programs that can better prevent this type of violence. This study aims to determine if the contents of the 2015 Ontario Health and Physical Education Curriculum at the 9th grade level includes central themes and components that are detailed in the literature to be needed to deter sexual violence perpetration. Through the development and application of a theoretical framework of knowledge, this research project conducted a deductive qualitative content analysis on the 2015 Ontario Health and Physical Education Curriculum. Information used to evaluate the Curriculum includes central themes identified in the literature as being pertinent to the prevention of sexual violence and the use of the social norms theory. Overall, it was determined that while the 2015 Ontario Curriculum addresses most literature themes associated with sexual violence perpetration and school-based programming, it contains certain limitations that will likely make it a less effective program.

Common Themes Associated with Teacher-Identified Obstacles to Implementing Change in Mathematics Instruction Attributable to Participation in Mathematics Professional Development

Twitchell, Ronald A. 01 May 2014 (has links)
This study had three purposes: first, explore any common phenomenon of secondary mathematics teachers’ experience in secondary mathematics professional development (MPD); second, determine if there were positive changes in teacher attitudes after completing secondary MPD; and finally, if a positive change in teacher attitude was identified, describe the shared experiences in secondary MPD to in a way that cannot be revealed through ordinary observations. It was the intent of this study to identify positive changes in teacher attitudes not to measure their magnitude. This study implemented a mixed methods design using descriptive statistics and categorical analysis on data from pre- and post-surveys to search for any positive change in teacher attitudes and data analysis from in-depth interviews of participants of a MPD experience. The study had two research questions. The first research question was, “Can teachers with initially poor attitudes about MPD gain positive attitudes in one or more of the four areas of MPD through mandated participation in MPD?” The second was, “If a change in teacher attitude is identified, can phenomena associated with that change be categorized within one or more of the four areas of MPD?” Three instruments were used: electronic versions of the Local Systematic Change Through Teacher Enhancement Mathematics 6-12 Survey referred to as Survey 1 and a self-report survey referred to as Survey 2, as well as multiple in-depth interviews of select participants of a common MPD. Analysis of data from Survey 1 identified eight participants as possible candidates to participate in the interview process of which six were supported by data from Survey 2. Four of the six candidates accepted an invitation to participate in two in-depth interviews each. There was evidence that teachers with initially poor attitudes about MPD can gain positive attitudes in one or more of the four domains of MPD after participating in mandated MPD. However, the answer to the second research question remained unanswered because results from data analysis were inconclusive. Three recurring themes surfaced from the interviews: (a) the need for explicit learning targets, (b) need for professional treatment of participants, and (c) obstacles to the four domains of MPD.
