Enhancing Training Outcomes in the Context of e-Learning: The Impact of Objective Learner Control, Training Content Complexity, Cognitive Load, Learning Goal Orientation, and Metacognitive Strategies

Granger, Benjamin P. 01 January 2012 (has links)
Learner-controlled e-learning has become a preferred medium for the delivery of organizational training. While e-learning offers organizations and trainees many advantages, it also comes with several potential disadvantages. The aim of this study was to explore the relative efficacy of learner- and program-controlled e-learning for content that differs in its complexity. This study also explored cognitive load as a differential mediator of the interaction between learner control and training content complexity for predicting cognitive and behavioral learning outcomes. Finally, learning goal orientation was explored as a motivational individual difference that helps learners cope with complex, learner-controlled e-learning environments. Results suggest that while there is little difference between learners in learner- and program-controlled e-learning environments for content that is relatively simple in nature, complex, learner-controlled e-learning environments are detrimental to cognitive learning relative to complex, program-controlled environments. Moreover, the results suggest that this interaction is differentially mediated by cognitive load, suggesting that complex, learner-controlled environments induce high cognitive demands onto learners which ultimately inhibit cognitive learning. Finally, learning goal orientation was identified as more facilitative individual difference in learner-controlled e-learning environments relative to program-controlled and simple training environments. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings are also discussed.

Behandlingseffekt av kognitiv beteendeterapi avseende hälsorelaterad livskvalitet : En utvärdering av terapi utförd av terapeutkandidater / Effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy on health-related quality of life : An evaluation of therapies provided by trainee therapists

Henriksson, Sophie January 2015 (has links)

Platon, Amanda, Urtel, Frida January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine social worker's experiences of the relationship between education and work. This was done by analyzing how social work students during a trainee program meet job-specific tasks. To answer the study's purpose, we have set up four issues: "What skills will be visible in the transition from education to working life?", "What experiences are characterized in the social worker’s practical work?", “How do the social workers adjust their knowledge from education to work” and “Which support for learning does the trainee program give?". The study is based on qualitative semi-structured interviews. We interviewed five social workers who are participating or have participated the trainee program. The material has been analyzed based on our chosen theories of situated learning. The results show that what social workers have done within the framework of the trainee program forms a distinct relationship between education and work. What the social workers have experienced as important in the trainee program is talking with others at the workplace, observation of experienced colleagues and participation in practical sessions.

Trainee Clinical Psychologists' experiences of personal therapy and its relationship to development across training : a grounded theory study

Malpass, Elizabeth January 2017 (has links)
Although it is not a professional requirement, research shows that some Trainee Clinical Psychologists (CPs) access PT (PT) whilst training (Nel, Pezzolesi & Stott, 2012). CPs' practice is moving towards the Reflective-Scientist-Practitioner Model, therefore identifying ways that CPs may develop reflective skills is required. Most other therapeutic trainings have PT as a requirement (Malikiosi-Loizos 2013), which is suggested as a method of developing reflective skills (Lavender, 2003; Wigg Cushway & Neal, 2011). Little research has investigated the use of PT by Trainee CPs. The current study explored processes by which 12 Trainee CPs experienced their own (PT), and how these processes related to their development whilst training. Participants were interviewed using single, semi-structured interviews. Data was analysed using Constructivist Grounded Theory (Charmaz, 2014). Two models were constructed, these described participants' decision to access PT mediated by anticipating or experiencing distress and learning about the self through PT. Participants seemed to develop and learn about themselves in three domains; 1) Learning about me: Personally; 2) Learning about me: Professionally; and 3) Learning about me: Being a client. I understand this development occurred through the continuous process of participants taking a dilemma to PT, reflecting upon the dilemma, and thereby acquiring a different understanding of themselves. These experiences apparently permit participants to integrate personal attributes into their professional identities and to model positive experiences from their own therapy in their practice. The results support PT as a method of developing competencies required within the Reflective Practitioner Model, implying that the use of PT for Trainee CPs should be considered within professional training. Furthermore, participants described emotional struggles during training which they perceived, according to professional discourses, to be unacceptable. This implies that evaluating formal and informal support systems for Trainee CPs is essential.

Programas trainee como forma de inserção no mercado de trabalho e construção de carreira

Bitencourt, Betina Magalhães January 2011 (has links)
Trainee Programs are one of the forms of insertion of young graduates in the labor market and have contributed with their imaginary, hoping with such opportunity a differentiated way to start the construction of their professional career. From the frame on the labor market, young people and job, career, and Trainee Programs, and to assess whether the trainees have their expectations met when finalizing the Trainee Program, this study addressed through analysis of discursive practices (SPINK, 2004), how they have been seen now in the labor market by its various actors, as representatives of companies, young trainee applicants, trainees and ex-trainees, totalizing 40 interviewed people. It was noted that although few vacancies are available, they are very crowded and there is difficulty in distinguishing the various types of Trainee Programs offered by companies, some of these programs represent a differentiated way of joining in large companies, in which apparently the young have more conditions to receive investment in training taking a closer contact with the leaders of business, opportunity, thus greater chances of career growth. It was noted that there is a kind of career that seems common for most young trainees, multidirectional, and career expectations about this, the trainees stated they see themselves able to grow in organizations where they work and want to use that potential to its fullest to accomplish their goals. However, it is evidenced that the level of expectation generated in offers of the PGTs does not always correspond to their hope, causing frustration, making some of them modify their trajectory of career, searching other possibilities in the labor market.

An exploration of trainee counselling psychologists' experiences of undertaking a doctoral thesis in the United Kingdom

Santira Kesu, Sabita January 2015 (has links)
Background and objectives: A thesis is a requirement of the doctoral counselling psychology programme and plays an important role in forming an identity as a trainee counselling psychologist. While extensive research exists for doctorate experiences in general, less is known about the experiences of trainee counselling psychologists undertaking a thesis in the United Kingdom. The rationale behind this study is therefore to explore how trainee counselling psychologists perceive and make meaning of their experiences and how they go about writing their doctoral thesis. Method and analysis: A qualitative design was employed to answer the research question. Semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted with twenty trainee counselling psychologists who were either starting to write their thesis or at the stage of almost completing it. A grounded theory analysis was used in this study, which aims to generate a theory based on categories that have been discovered from the data. Several strategies were employed in this study to demonstrate the rigour and trustworthiness in a qualitative design. Findings: The results of this study show that two categories emerged from the data: (1) obstacles in completing a thesis and (2) positive perspective towards undertaking a thesis. The theory that emerged from this study shows that trainee counselling psychologists have both positive and negative experiences which appear to fluctuate during the process of undertaking a thesis and vary from person to person due to individual circumstances. It is vital not to envisage a dichotomy between the positive and negative experiences, which form a natural and necessary journey for all doctoral students. Conclusions: The trainee counselling psychologists' experiences of undertaking a thesis can be viewed as an emotional and multifaceted journey. Overall, the shared experiences of trainee counselling psychologists undertaking a doctoral thesis was a valuable contribution to this study. The paper discusses avenues for further research alongside some practical recommendations that might be useful for trainee counselling psychologists undertaking a doctoral thesis.

Intersections of diversity and trainee competence problems: Faculty perspectives from context to "colorblindness"

Miller, David Scott 09 1900 (has links)
xvi, 283 p. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / The dual roles of educators and gatekeepers (Laliotis & Grayson, 1985; Vacha-Haase, Davenport, & Kerewsky, 2004) require faculty to identify and work with students who are identified as having problems of professional competence (TIPPC). Although a number of researchers (e.g., Forrest, Elman, Gizara & Vacha-Haase, 1999; Huprich & Rudd, 2004; Vacha-Haase et al.) have found that on average, at least one student per program is identified as having professional competence problems every three to five years, few have explored trainers' experiences working with colleagues and TIPPCs on trainee remediation or dismissal. Even fewer have explored trainers' processes for working at intersections of diversity with TIPPC, leading some researchers (Forrest et al., 1999) to suggest that programs' mechanisms for identifying and remediating problems of professional competence in training have not adequately addressed intersections with diversity. The omission of these variables is particularly troubling as it may pose threats to the retention of diverse cohorts. Using a Grounded Theory approach, interviews with 22 training directors (TDs) and faculty members were analyzed to explore processes for conceptualizing and addressing intersections of diversity with TIPPC. A model emerged in which participants described dilemmas, examined apparent problems, reached decisions and acted on what they had learned. Processes for conceptualizing and addressing these intersections were embedded in contexts of (a) espoused ideologies and (b) program variables that impacted conversations about intersections of diversity with TIPPC. Participants who espoused a context-attentive approach demonstrated less consistency than participants who espoused a colorblind approach, sometimes losing or discontinuing attention to context during their analyses. Possible reasons for this discrepancy, as well as training, research, and political implications are discussed. / Adviser: Linda Forrest
