Matematikängslan : En studie om främjande undervisning för elever i matematikängslan / Math anxiety : A study promoting teaching for students with math anxietyEkelöf, Malin, Filipiak, Boguslawa January 2022 (has links)
During our studies to becom special teachers in mathematics development, we have developed an interest in students who show resistance to the subject of matehmatics or mathematics teaching. The purpose of the study is to investigate teaching that promotes learning for pupils in mathematics anxiety, to distinguish any challenges that the teachers might encounter in teaching and to make visible future collaboration between the teachers and the special education teachers to support learning for pupils with mathematics anxiety. This has been done through semi-structured interviews and observations of primary and middle school teachers. The method used was inspired by grounded theory. The results were analyzed using sociocultural theory. The entire study rests on a relational perspective, which sees the student in difficulties and not with difficulties. The conclusion drawn from the study was that the teachers agreed with research in the field about which teaching methods are beneficial for students in mathematics anxiety. They also agreed with the research about the challenges that can arise in working with these students. Several different examples of collaboration between the teachers and the special education teachers emerged during the interviews. However, several challenges were identified which prevent teachers from implementing these methods in everyday teaching. A challenge in this may, for example, be that the special teachers in mathematics development are few in the schools. Another challenge can be that the teachers request pedagogical guidance where didactic issues can be raised, but that forum is missing in many schools.

Previous issue date: 2016-02-02 / This research brings considerations about the contributions deriving from a teacher development course for Cycle II (4th year of Elementary school) teachers, promoted by the Municipal Education Department of Campinas. The leading question was: what indications about the resignification of teaching and learning Mathematics can be found in the utterances of teachers inserted in this teacher development space??. Thus, the general purpose of this research was to investigate if and how this teacher development space influenced the knowledge and beliefs of Elementary school teachers. It was assumed that contributions would be made possible from the centering of the development course in the professional performance locus of those teachers; and the course aimed at promoting studies and research in Mathematics Education, as well as reflections on the pedagogical practices of those educators. The specific objectives of this research were: a) to identify the knowledge about Mathematics that the teachers-participants would reveal during the data compilation and if/how that knowledge would be altered during the course; b) to identify the knowledge of the teachers-participants about Mathematics learning ? how they themselves would learn and how they would identify their learning at the moment of
data compilation; and c) to identify the knowledge and beliefs of the teachersparticipants
about how to teach Mathematics ? how they envisaged their practices and how they started to identify their learning from the teachers development course at the moment of data compilation. This research, using a qualitative approach, counted on three teachers-participants of in-service continuing professional development and the data was obtained via three main sources:1) the life narratives of those professionals, from elementary school students themselves to starting their teaching careers; 2) the transcripts of the semi-structured interviews, one made at the end of the development course and another ten months after that; and 3) the transcripts of the oral narratives of the last meeting of the development course that were recorded in audio and video. Triangulation of the sources was used to configure and analyze the data. The results indicate that those teachers bring negative experiences in relation to Mathematics stemming from their initial education, and
also, that their beliefs about teaching and learning Math built during their own student history influence their pedagogical practice. In-service continuing teacher education, conducted in the teachers workplace, emerges as a space for professionalization, development, knowledge, assistance to the multiple situations pertaining teaching and learning of Mathematics and, also, for overcoming the challenges of change for the professional development of those teachers.

Eighth Grade Students' / Perceptions Related To Their Mathematics Teachers' / Interpersonal BehaviorsSimseker, Munire 01 March 2002 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to investigate eighth grade students&rsquo / perceptions of their mathematics teachers&rsquo / interpersonal behaviors. The study also investigated mathematics teachers&rsquo / perceptions of their own interpersonal behaviors as well as relationships among students&rsquo / perceptions of their teachers&rsquo / interpersonal behaviors, attitudes towards mathematics, mathematics achievements, student gender, teacher gender, and socio-economical background. Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction (QTI) scale and a mathematics attitude scale were used for data collection. Data were collected from a sample of 1317 eighth grade students in public elementary schools in the following provinces: istanbul, Ankara, izmir, Adana, Bursa, and Hatay.
Statistical analyses revealed that the Turkish version of QTI translated and adapted by the researcher had an acceptable degree of validity and reliability. Results showed that Turkish students perceive their mathematics teachers as displaying high levels of leadership, helpful/friendly, understanding, and displaying strict behaviors rather than uncertain, admonishing and dissatisfied behaviors. The results also indicated that students&rsquo / perceptions of their mathematics teachers&rsquo / interpersonal behaviors were associated with their attitudes towards mathematics and their mathematics achievement. While the leadership, helpful/friendly, and understanding behaviors had positive correlations with attitude scores of students, the uncertain, dissatisfied, admonishing and strict behaviors had negative correlations. Similarly, students who perceived their teacher as displaying leadership, helping/friendly and understanding behavior had higher achievement levels than the ones who perceive their teacher as strict, uncertain, admonishing and dissatisfied. Students with higher cultural and economical background perceived their teachers more favorably.
The MANOVA results indicated that girls generally perceived their mathematics teacher more cooperative than boys did. Also students perceived their male teachers display more leadership, helping/friendly, and strict behaviors than their female teachers. Results also indicated that teachers generally perceived themselves in a more favorably manner than their students did.

Previous issue date: 2016-10-20 / This study highlights the initial training of elementary school mathematics teachers (early years), in the course of degree in Pedagogy and aims at setting the necessary knowledge to university teachers (trainers). The research on the training needs of the trainer teacher must articulate the discussion on the teaching of mathematical content, as well as on the methodological approaches in the teaching of mathematics, considering the need of the intersection of specific mathematical content and didactic and pedagogical issues. In this context, such knowledge must be complementary, in that the teacher takes the decisions regarding what to teach and how to teach. The proposed research conducted a literature review of the history of the teaching of mathematics and didactics for Elementary Education, interfaced with the training of teachers. The field research provided data collection through a questionnaire and interviews, with the reference Szymanski (2002, 2004) and Franco (2003) for data analysis. In 2013 students data were collected from a course of the Greater ABC Paulista region of Education, through a questionnaire. In 2014 were collected mathematics teachers data of elementary school (early years and later years), undergraduate teachers in undergraduate courses in Education and Mathematics, students of undergraduate courses in Education and Mathematics, as well as educators who work the continued training of mathematics teachers of basic education. In order to contemplate the different views and perspectives that dialogue with the issue of training of mathematics teachers, in particular, the training of teachers who teach mathematics in the early years of elementary school, the discussion of the data it is anchored in the theoretical authors reference as Almeida and Pimenta (2011); Cunha (1989, 2014); Curi (2004, 2005, 2006); D'Ambrosio (1986, 1996, 2011); Freire (1977, 1996); Garcia, Alves and Libâneo (2012); Machado (2012); Megid (2013, 2015); Miguel and Miorim (2004); Ortega (2008, 2011, 2012); Pimenta (2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2010); Santos (2005, 2012, 2014); Schliemann and Carraher (2006); Smole and Diniz (2001); Tardif (2000, 2001, 2002); Utsumi (2003); Utsumi and Lima (2008); among other authors. The results indicate that teachers in training and at work graduates in mathematics also need to deepen the field of mathematical education content; both students of undergraduate courses in pedagogy as undergraduate courses in mathematics advertise their training gaps in terms of the need for greater access to and knowledge of methodological approaches guided by the current trends of the teaching of mathematics. In this sense, the analysis of the survey data confirms the need to consider the much-vaunted inseparability of content and form in the formation of undergraduate course of mathematics teachers in pedagogy and, as a result, the necessary relentless pursuit of Mathematics continuing education for the trainer of teachers of this course, on and from their own training needs in order to make possible the progressive and desired democratization of access to mathematical knowledge by pupils and students in the early years of elementary school.

Previous issue date: 2016 / Teacher education is an issue transversed by several dilemmas. Discussion and research on continuing teacher education have mobilized reflections on the dimensions of teacher professional development and different understandings have been presented. In our experience and discussions, we attempt to understand how teachers of Mathematics rebuilding their teaching practices from studies, interactions and educational monitoring. Broadening our studies, we found out the need for a continuing education design specific for math teacher of elementary school. Bringing together difficulties both in teachers´ practice and in math language, has given rise to think about organizing an education methodology that articulate theory and practice to improve teaching skills based on Fedathi Sequence to mediate the formation of concepts. From this initial idea, some questions guided the discussion: What are the pedagogical basis for a continuing education methodology for math teachers in-service? What lecture design is suited to such methodology considering the characteristics of the target audience? Which are the appropriate guidelines for the math teachers and students formation on theoretical and didactic concepts, based on Fedathi Sequence? This study sought for answers to these questions through the design of a pedagogical methodology for continuing math teacher education in-service at elementary school. This study is justified by the importance of investigating a continuing education model to work with the guidance of training of school mathematics teachers taking for granted his performance in service and its upgrade needs, reframing and exchange experiences with their natural peers entered a same community.

Truth games on the composition of a good mathematics teacher is a master dissertation which aims to discuss the relation between the mathematics students/trainee teachers and the pedagogical truths that constitute them as moral subjects. As research material, the students’ statements and writings from the teaching course in mathematics at UFRGS are analyzed, taken from Lenzi (2008) masters dissertation entitled "Practical learning in mathematics education: the constitution of the pedagogical practices of future math teachers." with a focus on teaching practice in the graduation course and that make evident the effects of the alliance between power and truth through pedagogical discourses in the constitution and regulation of pedagogical practices. The analysis of these statements and writings is made considering this subject as a discourse composition, through foucaultian clef, having the notion of truth games, over wittgensteinian concept of language games, as the main tool for a discourse analysis of the ways one says or sees him/herself as a good mathematics teacher in the university-school ambient and in the contemporary mathematical education. As compositional possibilities of an ethical mathematics teacher, it is discussed the ways in which prescriptions of moral character can be transformed in conducts of ethical character with esthetic effects in the way the math teacher to be can guide him/herself.

An Exploration of Teacher Perspectives of Mathematics Anxiety and Gender StereotypingBrowning, Jessica 01 May 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to identify the current perspective of grades three through twelve in-service teachers regarding mathematics anxiety, its causes, and its relation to gender stereotyping. A short online survey was conducted to gain insight into their classrooms and perspectives of the subject. The results showed that mathematics anxiety did exist in the classroom, and in-service teachers did report seeing a gender gap between the anxiety experienced by females and males. I believe that from these findings it is important to conduct further research on in-service teachers to see in depth what they think. This is important because their beliefs about the subject can have a lasting impact on their students and their feelings towards mathematics.

Extra anpassningar och särskilt stöd i matematik : Hur ser speciallärare i matematik på stödinsatser i matematikundervisningen?Jansson, Therése January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this study is to investigate special adjustments and special support in the mathematics education from a special education teacher in mathematics perspective. The study has a hermeneutical approach. Accordingly, semi-structured interviews with four special education teachers in mathematics from grade F-6 and grade 7-9 has been used to gain an understanding of how special education teachers in mathematics view the new directives in the school law regarding support measures. The analytical tools that has been used are the Swedish School Law, the curriculum (Lgr 11) , general advice from the Ministry of Education and perspectives on special education. The result of the study shows that three of the special education teachers in mathematics see the special adjustments as a path between the students’ needs and special support but the teachers doesn´t regard it as anything new. However, none of the special education teachers in mathematics notice any decrease in administrative burden in the work of special adjustments. Also noticeable from the results, is that the special education teachers in mathematics experience make no difference between the special adjustments and special support. Rather, it was the character of the special educational support that was definitive. The result also shows that the width, length and level of involvement are important indicators when measuring special support. In the study different perspective on special education can be noticed in the special education teachers in mathematics descriptions of the consequences for both the school's work as in the approach to students in need of support. So, if the new laws regarding special educational support will have the desired effect, it is necessary that the special education teachers in mathematics have the required level of competence to interpret what special adjustments and special support is and being able to guide teacher in mathematics to be able to guide students to achive the educational goals.
