Determination of Ion Number Density from Langmuir Probe Measurements in the Ionosphere of Titan

Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, presents a very interesting subject for study because of its atmosphere’s complex organic chemistry. Processes taking place there might shed some light on the origins of organic compounds on Earth in its early days. The international spacecraft Cassini-Huygens was launched to Saturn in 1997 for a detailed study of the gas giant and its moons, specifically Titan. The Swedish Institute of Space Physics in Uppsala has manufactured the Langmuir probe instrument for the Cassini spacecraft now orbiting Saturn, and is responsible for its operation and data analysis. This project concerns the analysis of Titan’s ionosphere measurements from this instrument, from all “deep” flybys of the moon (<1400km altitude) in the period October 2004 - April 2010. Using the Langmuir Probe analysis tools, the ion flux is derived by compensating for the atmospheric EUV extinction (that varies with the photoelectron current from the probe). The photoelectron current emitted from the probe also gives an artifact in the data that for this project needs to be deducted before analysis. This factor has already been modeled, while the extinction of Titan’s atmosphere has only been taken into account on event basis (not systematically). The EUV corrected ion flux data is then used to derive the ion number density in Titan’s atmosphere, by setting up an average ion mass altitude distribution (using the Ion Neutral Mass Spectrometer results for comparison) and deriving the spacecraft speed along the Cassini spacecraft trajectory through Titan’s ionosphere. The ion number density results proved to correlate very well with the theoretical ionospheric profiles on the day side of Titan (see graphical representation in the Results section). On the night side, a perturbation of the ion flux data was discovered by comparison with Ion Neutral Mass Spectrometer data, supporting earlier measurements of negative ions reported by Coates et al 2009. The project was carried out at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (Institutet för Rymdfysik, IRF) in Uppsala. / Saturnus största måne Titan är ett väldigt intressant forskningsobjekt på grund av dess atmosfärs komplexa organiska kemi. Denna faktor är redan bestämd, men extinktionen av Titans atmosfär har endast korrigerats för i enstaka fall. Det korrigerade datat används för att få fram jondensiteten i Titans atmosfär genom att en genomsnittlig jonmass/höjd fördelning antas (jämförs med resultat från INMS-instrumentet) och kombineras med den beräknade hastighet som Cassini håller i banan genom jonosfären. Projektet utfördes vid Institutet för Rymdfysik, Uppsala.

Detecting Leakages in the PneumaticSystem of Heavy Vehicles : Modelling Using Simulink

In this thesis an algorithm for detecting leakages in the pneumatic system of heavy vehicles is developed. Besides a description of this algorithm, the thesis includes a description of the pneumatic system of heavy vehicles, a review of some basic statistics and change detection analysis, and a description and analysis of some validation tests. Heavy vehicles use compressed air for various applications, including brakes and suspensions. Leakages in the pneumatic system are quite common and results in an increase in fuel usage, since more compressed air has to be produced. This is of course both environmentally and economically damaging. In order to avoid this damage, leakages need to be fixed. The first step is to notice the presence of leakages. The leakage detecting algorithm is based on a statistical deviation analysis. Inputs used are pressure measurements from the different compressed air circuits and some state variables regarding the compressed air users. All this information is communicated aboard on the vehicles’ controller area network (CAN). The algorithm has been validated using real data measurements from test drives, some of them including a vehicle suffering from leakages. The results indicate that the algorithm manages to identify leakages, but also that there are some problems regarding incorrectly interpreting other events as leakages. The results also indicate that the algorithm fail in the ambition to locate the leakages. If this algorithm should be implemented in a real time system to be used aboard, it is suggested that some improvements are made. These improvements mainly concern avoiding false alarms.

A field study in Kenya of insolation parameters to make water drinkable in the household water treatment unit SOLVATTEN

SOLVATTEN is a household water cleaning device that cleans water with solar energy using filtration, pasteurization and UV sterilization. A field study of the necessary amount of solar insolation that is required to make water drinkable has been carried out in Kenya using a new type of indicator developed by Solvatten AB.  This new indicator will complement the old one, which only registers the temperature, with new features to store information about temperature and insolation. The indicators have been calibrated for energy and temperature and a Matlab program has been developed to analyze the information registered by the indicators. The program handles the time shifting that occurs since the indicator only saves the data at some point during a quarter of an hour. It also handles temperature correction and does a suitable curve fitting using polyfit and spline. The experiments have been divided into two parts, one where the relationship between UV and total solar insolation has been studied and one where we have taken water samples and studied the limiting factors of temperature, UV and total insolation for drinkable water. Previous studies have showed that the water in SOLVATTEN gets clean at 55 C. To reach this temperature the required UV245-400 and UV190-570 insolation is 83.0 Wh/m2 and 307 Wh/m2 according to our tests. The required total insolation is 2680 Wh/m2. From our measurement it can be seen that it is possible for water to be clean at 53 °C. During our artificial tests where we pre-heated the water and thus decreased the total insolation, we never got below 8.2 Wh/indicator which correspond to 1940 Wh/m2 of total insolation at 55 °C. The limit for clean water shown from earlier tests by Solvatten AB is 8 Wh/indicator. Even when the temperature was lower than 55 °C and we got clean water, the insolation was never below this value. This means that it is the temperature that is the limiting factor; however the synergy effect with the insolation is essential for the cleaning process. When it is cloudy the amount of UV that SOLVATTEN receives will be lower compared to the total insolation. With more clouds the temperature will drop and rise many times, while the insolation continues to increase. This means that more clouds will give more total insolation. The shortest time it took to reach 55 °C was 1 hours and 45 minutes at an optimal angle to the sun. / SOLVATTEN är en vattenreningslösning för hushåll som kombinerar filtrering, uppvärmning samt UV-strålning för att döda bakterier. Det är en 11 liters plastdunk, där ena sidan är genomskinlig, och efter att den har exponerats i solen mellan 2- 6 timmar är vattnet rent. En fältstudie har genomförts i Kenya för att undersöka exakt hur mycket solinstrålning som krävs för att vattnet ska bli rent. Idag finns det en väl fungerande indikator som mäter vattnets temperatur men en ny indikator har tagits fram av Solvatten AB som även mäter solinstrålningen och kan lagra den tillsammans med vattentemperaturen. Indikatorerna har kalibrerats för att få rätt energi och temperatur och ett Matlab-program har utvecklats för att kunna analysera informationen. För att kunna ta fram exakta värden används funktionerna polyfit och spline för att kurvanpassa datan. Programmet tar även hänsyn och korrigerar för de fel som kan uppkomma då tiden sparas. Dessa tidsfel uppkommer då indikatorerna endast skriver informationen någon gång under en kvart. Fältstudien är uppdelad i två delar, en där relationen mellan UV och total instrålning har studerats och en där vattenprover har tagits för att undersöka vilken som är den begränsande faktorn för rent vatten; temperatur, UV eller total instrålning. Tidigare studier har visat att SOLVATTEN blir rent vid 55 C. För att lyckas uppnå denna temperatur har det i vår studie krävts 83.0 Wh/m2 av UV245-400 och 307 Wh/m2 av UV190-570. När det gäller den totala instrålningen har det behövts 2680 Wh/m2. Vi har sett att det är möjligt för vattnet att bli rent vid 53 °C. Under våra tester då vi förvärmde vattnet och på sätt fick mindre instrålning, lyckades vi aldrig få under 8.2 Wh/indikator vilket motsvarar 1940 Wh/m2 av totala instrålningen, detta vid 55 °C. Tidigare tester av Solvatten AB visar att det behövs 8 Wh/indikator för att uppnå rent vatten och då vi aldrig lyckades få in mindre instrålning än så tyder det på att det är temperaturen som är den begränsande faktorn. Dock är instrålningen nödvändig då det är synergieffekten mellan värme och instrålningen som uppnår rent vatten vid så låga temperaturer. Om det är mycket moln på himlen sjunker och ökar temperaturen många gånger medan solinstrålningen fortsätter att ackumuleras. Detta betyder att den instrålade energin som når SOLVATTEN blir högre då det krävs längre exponeringstid för att nå 55 °C. Dock har vi sett att mängden UV inte ökar lika mycket som den totala instrålningen men ett generellt förhållande av hur UV och total instrålning förändras vid molnigt väder är dock svårt att kunna få fram. Den kortaste tiden för att uppnå rent vatten är 1 timme och 45 minuter då SOLVATTEN har haft en optimal vinkel mot solen.

Study of Tin Whisker Growth and their Mechanical and Electrical Properties

The phenomenon of spontaneous growth of metallic filaments, known as whisker growth has been studied. Until now the problem that Sn whisker growth could cause in electronics by making shorts has been partially prohibited as Pb and Sn have been used together in solders and coating. Regulations restricting Pb use in electronics has made the need to understand Sn whisker growth more current. It is shown that whiskers are highly resilient towards vibrations and shocks. A Sn whisker is shown to withstand 55 mA. Results show that reflowing of the Sn plated surface does not prevent extensive whisker growth. Results show that intermetallic compound growth can not be the sole reason behind whisker growth. Nickel and silver underlayer have been shown not to prevent whisker growth, but perhaps restrain whisker growth. Heat treatment damped whisker growth considerably. It is judged that base material CuSn6 is less prone to show whisker growth than CuSn0.15 and E-Cu58.

<p>This report treats detection in IR-pictures taken from airplanes over the ground. The detection is divided in two parts. First there is a detection with filterkernels with the task to point on targets and objects that look like targets. The second part is a discriminator that demands more calculations and has the task to sort out the false alarms from the discriminator. Both the detector and the discriminator contain thresholds thats been trained from trainingsets of data. The results from the detector was better then expected hence it wasn’t possible to test the diskriminator properly.</p> / <p>Den här rapporten behandlar detektering i IR-bilder som är tagna från flygplan över marken. Detekteringen är i det här arbetet uppdelat i två delar. Först görs en detektering med filterkärnor som har till uppgift att peka ut mål och målliknande objekt. Den andra delen är en diskriminator som är något mer beräkningskrävande och har till uppgift att sortera bort de falskmål som detektorn fått med. Både detektorn och diskriminatorn innehåller trösklar som har tränats fram med träningsdata. Detektorn gav bättre resultat än väntat och diskriminatorn har därför inte kunnat testas ordentligt.</p>

Preparation and Characterization of Sputter Deposited Spectrally Selective Solar Absorbers

<p>The optical efficiency of a commercially available sputter deposited spectrally selective solar absorber was improved. The main purposes were to decrease the thermal emittance, increase the solar absorbtance of the absorber and to protect the substrate from degradation due to environmental influence. The adhesion properties between the corrosion-protecting barrier and the substrate were also studied. This project was focused on process improvements that are realistic to implement in industrial production.</p><p>The thermal emittance of the absorber was decreased from 0.12 to 0.06 by changing the material of the corrosion-protecting layer from nickel-chromium to copper-nickel. Copper-nickel was less sensitive to variations in the sputter parameters than nickel-chromium. A novel method that could simplify the search for alternative corrosion resistant materials with a low thermal emittance has been purposed. Since resistivity data usually exist or can easily be measured and infrared measurements require more sophisticated measurements, the Hagen-Rubens relation was investigated for copper-nickel and nickel-chromium alloys. The dc-resistivity was found to be related to the infrared emittance or the integrated thermal emittance for alloys in their solid soluble fcc phase.</p><p>The solar absorbtance was increased when a graded index absorbing coating was tailored for a crossover of the reflectance from low to high reflectance at about 2.5 µm. The solar absorber graded index coating was optimized for nickel metal content in nickel oxide and a solar absorptance of 0.89-0.91 was achieved. The solar absorptance was further increased to 0.97 when an antireflection coating was added on top of the absorbing layer.</p><p>Finally, extrapolation algorithms were developed to assure correct determination of the thermal emittance for coatings on glass since modern spectrometers that do not cover the complete wavelength interval required to calculate the thermal emittance of surfaces at room temperatures accurately. The error arising from the extrapolation algorithms were smaller than the noise from the optical measurements. Similar strategies can be used for other surfaces.</p>

Interface Defeat and Penetration: Two Modes of Interaction between Metallic Projectiles and Ceramic Targets

<p>Ceramics constitute an important group of low-density armour materials. Their high intrinsic strength makes it possible to design ceramic armour systems capable of defeating projectiles directly on the ceramic surface. This capability, named interface defeat, signifies that the projectile material is forced to flow radially outwards on the surface of the ceramic without penetrating significantly.</p><p>This thesis presents impact experiments between long-rod projectiles and ceramic targets. The projectile/target interaction was studied using flash X-ray technique. Transition velocities (the impact velocity at which interface defeat can no longer be maintained and penetration starts) were estimated for different combinations of metallic projectiles and ceramic targets and compared to critical velocities estimated on a theoretical basis. Replica scaling experiments were also performed in order to investigate the possible influence of scale.</p><p>All ceramic materials tested showed a distinct transition from interface defeat to penetration. Experiments with different silicon carbides showed that the transition velocity correlated better with the fracture toughness than with the hardness of the ceramic materials. For conical projectiles, penetration occurred along a conical surface crack and at a lower transition velocity than that observed for cylindrical projectiles. Experiments with unconfined alumina targets in different scales showed only a slight increase in dimensionless final penetration with length scale.</p><p>A unique transition velocity seems to exist for each combination of projectile, target material and target configuration. This velocity was found to depend on both the strength (hardness) and the brittleness (fracture toughness) of the ceramic. The lower transition velocity of conical projectiles compared with cylindrical ones is mainly due to the radially expanding load and the penetration of projectile material into surface cracks. The results of the experiments in different scales indicate that replica scaling is valid for penetration in ceramics.</p>

Silicon and Quartz Microengineering : Processing and Characterisation

<p>Microengineering has developed a broad range of production techniques to reduce size, increase throughput, and reduce cost of electrical and mechanical devices. The miniaturisation has also entailed entirely new opportunities.</p><p>In this work, a piezoresistive silicon sensor measuring mechanical deformation has been designed and fabricated with the help of microengineering. Due to the large variety of used processes, this device can serve as a survey of techniques in this field. Four basic process categories are recognised: additive, subtractive, modifying, and joining methods.</p><p>The last category, joining methods, has previously been the least investigated, especially when it comes to compatibility with the other categories. The adaptability of wet chemical etching to established silicon wafer bonding technique has been investigated. Further, phenomena related to oxygen plasma pre-treatment for direct bonding has been investigated by blister bond adhesion tests, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy.</p><p>Wafer bonding has been adapted to monocrystalline quartz. For wet chemical pre-treatment, characteristics specific for quartz raise obstacles. Problems with limited allowable annealing temperature, low permeability of water released in the bond at annealing, and electrostatic bonding of particles to the quartz surface, have been studied and overcome. The influence of internal bond interfaces on resonators has been investigated.</p><p>Chemical polishing of quartz by ammonium bifluoride has been experimentally investigated at high temperatures and concentrations. Chemometrical methods were used to search for optimum conditions giving the lowest surface roughness. These extreme conditions showed no extra advantages.</p><p>Adhesion quantification methods for wafer bonding have been comprehensively reviewed, and augmentations have been suggested. The improved techniques’ usefulness for three areas of use has been forecasted: general understanding, bonding scheme optimisation, and quality control. It was shown that the quality of measurements of all commonly used methods could be dramatically improved by small means.</p>

Investigations of Optical Properties and Photo-Alignment in Bistable Nematic Liquid Crystal Displays

<p>In recent years portable electronic devices, such as mobile phones and personal digital assistants, have increased the demand for high performance displays with low power consumption. An interesting candidate with the potential of fulfilling these demands is the reflective single-polarizer surface controlled bistable twisted nematic liquid crystal display. The main focus of this work involves the optical properties of displays based on these bistable structures. In the investigations, the display is considered as an integrated optical system, containing not only the liquid crystal cell, but also components such as polarizers and retardation films. The specific aim of the thesis was to derive new optical modes of the reflective single-polarizer bistable twisted nematic device using the Jones matrix method to study the interaction between the polarization of light and the optically anisotropic media. The electro-optical properties of the derived modes have been studied and evaluated both theoretically and experimentally. The modes possess excellent brightness and high contrast ratio. By introducing a quarter-wave retardation film into the optical configuration, the contrast ratio can be significantly increased by preventing spectral leakage of light in the dark state. To experimentally realize the derived optical modes, special layers for the alignment of the liquid crystal molecules on the cell substrate surface have been proved needed. Therefore, also the photo-alignment technology of nematic liquid crystals on novel alignment materials has been studied with the aim to control liquid crystal cell parameters such as pretilt angle and anchoring energy, both critical for the bistable switching. The results of this thesis will increase the understanding of the optical properties of the reflective single-polarizer bistable twisted nematic liquid crystal display and will be valuable when considering this type of device for practical applications.</p>

MHD Stability and Confinement of Plasmas in a Single Mirror Cell

<p>Thermonuclear fusion is a promising energy source for the future. If an economically efficient thermonuclear reactor would be built it has to be a cheap, safe, and highly productive electric power plant, or, a heating plant.</p><p>The emphasis of this thesis is on the single cell mirror trap with a marginally stable minimum B vacuum magnetic field, the straight field line mirror field, which provides MHD stability of the system, absence of the radial drift even to the first order in plasma β , and a reduced magnetic flux tube ellipticity. Strong density depletion at the mirrors is proposed as a mean to build up a strong potential barrier for the electrons and thereby increase the electron temperature. Conditions to obtain an energy gain factor Q>10 are briefly analyzed. Current coils which could generate the derived magnetic field are proposed. A sloshing ion distribution function is constructed for the three dimensional ‘straight line mirror field’. The gyro centre Clebsch coordinates are found to be a new pair of motional invariants for this magnetic field. The gyro centre Clebsch coordinate invariants can be used to obtain complete solutions of the Vlasov equation, including the diamagnetic drift. These solutions show that the equilibria satisfy the locally omniginuity criterion to the first order in β .</p><p>Contributions of the plasma diamagnetism to the magnetic flux tube ellipticity are studied for the straight field line mirror vacuum magnetic field and a sloshing ion distribution. Computations employing ray tracing have shown that there is a modest increase in the ellipticity, but the effect is small if β <0.2 .</p><p>Adiabatic charged particle motion in general field geometry has been studied. A set of four independent stationary invariants, the energy, the magnetic moment, the radial drift invariant, and the bounce average parallel velocity is proposed to describe adiabatic equilibria. </p>
