Reducing the wear costs of Ericsson’s test equipment: 2 cases

This thesis has attempted to reduce costs associated with wear parts in test equipment at Ericsson’s master and industrialization center (MIC) in Kista. Two different cases have been pursued, and each has been designed to follow a, for the purpose, adapted version of the design research methodology (DRM). The adapted model was presented and its use in both cases was additionally evaluated. Both cases were based on products that already have been launched and are used in production. In order to avoid expensive changes to surrounding equipment, incremental product development was chosen in both cases. The first case focused on test equipment used in the production of digital units for radio base stations. After the wear parts of this test equipment were examined, it was found that a plastic detail was manufactured through milling and as a result was quite expensive. The plastic detail was redesigned so that it could be manufactured using the injection molding process instead. This resulted in an estimated cost reduction of 48 %. The second case focused on wear parts of test fixtures used in the production of radio filters, also used in Ericsson’s radio base stations. A more process-oriented view was adopted in this case and parameters believed to be causing added wear such as positional and angular misalignment were examined further. Tolerance chains for each wear part in the assembled test fixture were calculated to determine the degrees of possible misalignment. The resulting data did however not correlate with each wear part’s individual wear interval, and no concrete cost reductive improvements could be delivered. Instead suggestions which can lead to further cost reductions in the long term were presented. The model used to develop improvements for these two cases was found to have helped the process in both cases, however further research of this model is recommended in order to determine if it is suitable for these types of projects in general

Impact of moisture on long term performance of insulating products based on stone wool

<p>Demands for energy have been increasing in the whole world. According to higher consumption, the price of energy rises yearly too. This evokes usage of insulating products in a wider range. By adding insulation, we lower the amount of energy needed to heat our homes, resulting in fewer associated greenhouse gas emissions and a lower monthly heating bill. Savings depend on insulation thicknesses and on conditions, in which the insulant is kept. Mineral insulation based on stone wool is also a member of building insulants that defends buildings and constructions against temperature changes of the ambient. However, even when we use modern technologies and building techniques to reduce high energy losses, we can never provide unimpeachable protection of stone wool from damage. During a construction process on a building site or at fast climate changes, it often happens that stone wool is exposed to rain precipitaions or other climate effets. This brings water to the insulating structure. Besides the loss of insulating qualities, the stone wool is left permanently wet. Even the fibres of stone wool are inorganic, they still can be attacked by degradation processes due to organic agents fixing fibres together. This diploma thesis deals with design and implementation of software for control of manufacturing tests of pneumatic proportional valve Festo MPYE. The single-purpose testing device consists of a DAQ device, a pressure sensor and of electrically operated pneumatic valves. In the introduction of this thesis are outlined aims of thesis followed by introduction to single-purpose assemblies commonly used in practice. The main part of this thesis deals with analysis and with solving the issues of assigned product testing. The designed and implemented modular software for control of manufacturing tests of assigned product is presented as an outcome and this software is easily adjustable for tests of a different product. In the conclusion are assessed achieved aims.

Concurrent Validity, Inra-unit, and Inter-unit Reliability of the Vmaxpro for Measuring Velocity

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the concurrent validity, intra-unit, and interunit reliability of the IMU Vmaxpro for measuring velocity for VBT purposes. Two protocols were constructed to cover velocities seen in the practical environment. Utilizing the 1080 Quantum the first protocol collected data without the use of subjects. For the second protocol, six well-trained men (age: 25.7 ± 4.2 years, standing height: 185.8 ± 10.6 cm, bodyweight: 87.3 ± 9.1 kg) performed loaded countermovement jumps. Two Vmaxpros and a 1080 Quantum simultaneously recorded repetitions for mean and peak velocity. Linear regression, RMSE, Bland-Altman, TE, and SDC were used to evaluate the concurrent validity, intra-unit, and inter-unit reliability. A strong relationship was found for MV and PV (R2 = 0.991– 0.997, RMSE = 0.044 – 0.05), p &lt; 0.05) as well as a strong agreement on both protocols (bias: -0.039 – 0.072 on Protocol 1 and bias: 0.155 – - 0.005 on Protocol 2). The Vmaxpro showed strong reliability scores for within (MV: TE = 0.013 – 0.021; PV: TE = 0.017 – 0.023), and between sessions (MV: TE = 0.014 – 0.020; PV: TE = 0.019 – 0.027). Inter-unit reliability was acceptable to strong for both MV (TE = 0.012 – 0.034) and PV (TE = 0.021 – 0.057). The Vmaxpro can provide valid and reliable measurements for VBT purposes when using a single sensor. However, the inter-unit reliability showed a magnitude of variance which suggests practitioners not to use multiple devices interchangeably, and if so, it should be done with caution.

All manufacturing requires some form of quality control to be able to ensure that a product will meet the customers requirements. Volvo Construction Equipment AB has a TDI station, Test Delivery Inspection, for transmissions. They experience a lack of insight and knowledge of the tests that has been done and therefore the purpose of this project is to investigate and improve Volvo CE's test equipment for transmissions and its reliability. The aim is to provide improvement proposals to the organization as well as a plan for the implementation, follow-up and control of the process. The study is an improvement project and therefore the methodology Six Sigma and parts of the work process DMAIC are used to accomplish the study. The method is adapted for improvement projects and is primarily used by larger producing companies. For data collection, both quantitative and qualitative methods are used. These methods are; the use of existing data from the organization, brainstorming and two different MSA tests aimed at examining the machine and the human's influence on the process. Several quality tools were helpful when analyzing the results and the two factors that has the biggest impact on the test equipment's results is the impact from the human and the test equipment itself such as the variation of the test equipment. An initial approach to reducing the impact of these factors and thereby making the test equipment more reliable is to make sure that all routines are followed and ensure that the method for extracting data from the test equipment is right. The conclusions are that the tolerance limits needs to be checked again just because they are based on personal experience and the process can be controlled with statistical process control. To follow up on the results, the same tests can be performed repeatedly and compared with this project. The project can be described as a standardized working method for similar improvement projects and can also be applied to other processes. / I all tillverkning krävs någon form av kvalitetskontroll för att kunna säkerställa att en produkt infriar kundernas krav. Syftet med detta projekt är att undersöka och förbättra Volvo CE:s testutrustning för transmissioner och dess tillförlitlighet med målet att ge förbättringsförslag till organisationen samt en plan för genomförande, uppföljning och styrning av processen. Projektet är ett förbättringsprojekt och därför används metodiken Six Sigma och delar av arbetssättet DMAIC för att genomföra studien. Ett första angreppssätt för att minska dessa faktorers påverkan och på så sätt göra testutrustningen mer tillförlitlig är att se till att alla rutiner följs samt att säkerställa metoden för att ta ut värden från testutrustningen. Processen kan styras med hjälp av statistisk processtyrning där resultatet även visar på att toleransgränserna bör ses över då de är satta utifrån erfarenhet. För att följa upp resultatet kan samma tester genomföras upprepade gånger och jämföras med detta projekt. Projektet kan berskrivas som ett standardiserat arbetssätt eller en metod för genomförande av liknande förbättringsprojekt och kan appliceras på andra processer.

Methods for Extending High-Performance Automated Test Equipment (ATE) using Multi-Gigahertz FPGA Technologies Ashraf M. Majid 264 Pages Directed by Dr. David Keezer This thesis presents methods for developing multi-function, multi-GHz, FPGAbased test modules designed to enhance the performance capabilities of automated test equipment (ATE). The methods are used to develop a design approach that utilizes a test module structure in two blocks. A core logic block is designed using a multi-GHz FPGA that provides control functions. Another block called the â application specificâ logic block includes components required for specific test functions. Six test functions are demonstrated in this research: high-speed signal multiplexing, loopback testing, jitter injection, amplitude adjustment, and timing adjustment. Furthermore, the test module is designed to be compatible with existing ATE infrastructure, thus retaining full ATE capabilities for standard tests. Experimental results produced by this research provide evidence that the methods are sufficiently capable of enhancing the multi-GHz testing capabilities of ATE and are extendable into future ATE development. The modular approach employed by the methods in this thesis allow for flexibility and future upgradability to even higher frequencies. Therefore the contributions made in this thesis have the potential to be used into the foreseeable future for enhancements to semiconductor test capabilities.

Functional test automation framework for domain experts

Functional Test of any given system is used to verify that the top level system is performing according to the specifications and all of the sub systems, i.e., hardware, software, inputs, outputs and sensors are operating properly. The term System is used here in context of any device or equipment consisting of hardware, software, sensors, virtual sensors and inputs / outputs. One of the examples of such a system is a semiconductor fabrication equipment. There have only been a few approaches that are used to perform the functional test of a system. Engineers typically develop custom test equipment to interface with the system under test and determine proper functioning of all the sub systems and behavior of overall system. In another method, domain experts, utilize the software of the system under test, and manually actuate / stimulate sub systems and then observe and record outcomes to determine whether the system exhibited correct behavior. A novel solution of a reusable functional test automation framework is developed. The framework interfaces with the system under test via the exposed API, and allow domain experts with minimal or no programming background to create test suites to methodically test overall functionality of the system. / text
