"There's A Man With A Gun Over There": Cops And The Counterculture

Moellinger, Terry 12 1900 (has links)
By 1960, television advertisers recognized the economic potential of American youth, and producers were expected to develop programs to attract them, while still maintaining appeal for the older audience members. This task was to prove difficult as the decade wore on. While continuing to link the nation's cold war concerns to the portrayal of good and evil, some shows, like 77 Sunset Strip, and The Mod Squad, explored alternative lifestyles, but still accepted American values. As the 1960s developed, crime programs continued to promote American hegemony but became increasingly more open to alternative reading strategies. This study examines the strategies developed to draw a youth audience to 1960s crime programs, while also supporting the dominant ideology of American society.

Crisis and form in Ingeborg Bachmann's late verse and prose : an aesthetic examination of the poetic drafts of the 1960s

McMurtry, Aine January 2008 (has links)
This thesis demonstrates the aesthetic impact of crisis on Ingeborg Bachmann's late verse and prose. It examines poetic drafts written during a period of personal breakdown in the 1960s, which have largely been received as documents of personal suffering, and identifies these texts as a radical stage of writing that was to prove formally significant for Bachmann's development of the prose "Todesarten"-Projekt. This thesis draws on the new material made available with the publication of these poetic drafts to chart the genesis of Bachmann's acclaimed late oeuvre. By selecting and grouping lyric fragments, the thesis defines recurrent features in this verse and accounts for the texts as a body of writing that forms a radical, yet undocumented, part of this oeuvre. In terms of both their form and of their content, the fragmentary drafts are shown to reflect new engagement with aspects of experience conventionally excluded from High Art. In light of Bachmann's growing preoccupation with the need for aesthetic engagement in the post-war era, close readings reveal how she set about taking her subjective suffering as a basis for a critique of the social order. The thesis outlines how, during the 1960s, Bachmann pioneered a symptomatic expressive mode that - in the disrupted form of the writing - found an indirect means of manifesting the wider origins of subjective disturbance. The ambiguous aesthetic status of these poetic drafts, which were never finished by Bachmann, is related to an inability to establish structural distance from crisis in lyric form. Building on its readings of the poetic drafts, the thesis traces Bachmann's prose experimentation with the same motifs. It identifies how, ultimately, the prose medium enabled the author to resolve problems of aesthetic form raised in the verse. Parallels with the work of other writers and thinkers illuminate the development of a reflexive mode where sophisticated aesthetic strategies enable the oblique expression of cultural critique.

Putování novinářského psance dobou dekadence a zvrácenosti: Hunter S. Thompson v kontextu Ameriky 60. a raných 70. let. / An Outlaw Journalist's Journey through an Era Decadent and Depraved: Hunter S. Thompson in the context of America of the 1960s and early 1970s.

Stárek, Jiří January 2015 (has links)
The thesis aims to explore the artistic personality of Hunter S. Thompson, one of the most distinctive cultural figures of post-war America, and his genesis as an author, journalist, and a counterculture idol of the 1960s. The era is now widely regarded as a turning point in contemporary American history as its deep-rooted values and norms were, over the course of a decade, gradually transformed by the young generation of social and political activists toward allegedly a more tolerant and liberal kind of community. Crucial in such an endeavor was the role of the countercultural movement that produced some of the most capable intellectual minds of the time, including Thompson. The paper thus analyzes the role and nature of the alternative culture in America as perceived by one of its most observant participants. Also, the thesis focuses on the author's role in establishing a new genre called New Journalism which can be linked with the era's countercultural efforts as well. In general, Thompson, in his texts, examines various phenomena surrounding the counterculture and provides us with a distinctive portrayal of the era's zeitgeist. However, unlike some of his contemporaries, he also remembers to examine numerous flaws and fallacies existing within contemporary American society, the American Dream...

Reflexe historických událostí v chorvatském filmu 50. a 60. let / Reflection of Historical Events in Croatian Film in the 1950s and 1960s

Janečková, Veronika January 2011 (has links)
This thesis examines how the creators of Croatian Jadran film - especially in the 1960s - portrayed the events bound to known historical reality, how they artistically interpreted this reality, and which historical events in the surveyed period were in the focus of their interest. In my choice of films I followed mainly the production aspect, which is also the main criterion of Croatian film historiography for selection of films in the national cinematography. From the topical perspective, the predominant motives relate to the people's liberation war or the civilian stories taking place in the background of war events. The movie Nevesinjska puška, which treats more ancient historical events, is the only exception. The production can also be characterised by the manner of explicating a historical theme. It features film spectacle, lyrical parable, and film interpretation which can serve as a material for historical research and analysis, or for studying the mimetic period between a generally accepted and understood historical fact, and its artistic rendition. The last mentioned is often featured with pictures from the partizan milieu. Except for some rare cases, the pictures reflecting historical events limited by the end of the World War II are distinguished by a collective, vaguely-specified...

Zlatý máj - časopis o umění a literatuře pro děti a mládež a osobnost Z. K. Slabého / Zlatý máj, magazine about art and literature for children and youth and the personality of Z.K.Slabý

Šimůnková, Lucie January 2013 (has links)
Master thesis Zlatý máj - Magazine about Children's Literature and Art and the Personality of Z. K. Slabý follows foundation and history of Czechoslovak literary journal Zlatý máj. It has been published from September 1956 till December 1997, when 391 issues came out in forty one volumes. The magazine experienced its golden era in 1960s, when it participated not only in domestic, but also in international discussions about children and youth literature. But it also endured through the time of so called normalization (1969 - 1989), when most of literary or cultural magazines perished, and its final end was brought by lack of finance after formation of democratic Czech Republic. The name of writer and literary critic Zdeněk Karel Slabý has been tied to Zlatý máj for the most of its existence. He acted at first as the redactor, in two periods as editor in chief (1968 - 1971, 1990 - 1992) and at last as a member of board of editors. As a part of his job, but also because of his active and creative nature he shaped or co-shaped the image of Zlatý máj. His authorial signature is visible in his texts, his opinions and preferences formed the sections and content of the magazine. Master thesis analyses the work of Z. K. Slabý and defines its place and importance in context of the literary theory and critique.

Schenberg e as Bienais / Schenberg and the Biannials

Pismel, Ana Paula Cattai 28 August 2018 (has links)
This study had the objective of highlighting Mario Schenberg\'s action in the Sao Paulo\'s International Biennial organization while art critic, in the decades of 1960 and 1970. It was analysed the critic\'s involvement in the painter Alfredo Volpi\'s Special Room in the VI Biennial (1961), as well as his participation on the selection jury of the brazilian representation on the VIII, IX and X Biennials (1965, 1967, 1969). It was examined, still, Schenberg\'s participation on the round tables promoted by the International Association of Art Critics on the 1969 and 1971 (X e XI Biennials) editions. The investigation considered by primary sources the original critics of the Mario Schenberg\'s Center of Documentation Research in Art - ECA/USP written in the defined period, as well as the other books, articles and interviews from the critic; add to this material the interviews with artists, curators and scientists who lived with Mario Schenberg in these two decades. In addition to that, a documental survey was carried out in the Wanda Svevo\'s Historical Archive from the Biennials Foundation. The critic\'s presence in the field was due, in first place, by his proximity to the artists and his interest for the art and, in second place, for his capacility of bringing a new view to works of art, which could add the singularity of Mario Schenberg\'s figure to the Biennial\'s work of art. In understanding that it was the fields function to promote visibility to the new artists who were starting to develop their work and define new ways for the art, the critic took upon him the role of facilitator on the acceptance of new artists and tendencies on the brazilian representation of the Biennials.

Schroeder, Caroline Saut 12 September 2011 (has links)
This essay examine the 10th São Paulo Biennial, from 1969, investigating it within a cultural and socio-political situation marked by arbitrariness of a dictatorship, the collective manifestations against injustices, and the social consciousness taking by artists and art critics. By an extensive research of documents related to the subject accumulated at the Wanda Svevo Historical Archive - São Paulo Biennial Foundation, it was possible to collect a number of information that helped reconstructing the facts. Besides, to establish a critical analysis of the informational findings, it was restored the published press reports from that time and an updated bibliography of politics, sociology, history and art field. The research presents the different angles of vision and attitude that permeated the boycott and the 10th Biennial seething within the context of the late 1960s. The show was achieved marked by political and cultural challenges and reverberated inside the same conflicts and ideological contradictions of the macro-political scenario. This agitation had its origins in the utopian impulse looking for transformations of the conservative structures.

O Chile na obra de Chris Marker: um olhar para a Unidade Popular desde a França / The Chile in the Chris Markers work:a look at the Popular Unity government from France

Aguiar, Carolina Amaral de 07 June 2013 (has links)
This work analyses the Chris Markers films that inquired about the Popular Unity in the 1970s. Among the productions approached, two of them have been reassembled from other Chilean documentaries that had been made during the Salvador Allendes government: La première année (1973) and On vous parle du Chili: ce que disait Allende (1973). Furthermore, three other films by Chris Marker have analysed this subject: La Spirale (1976), The embassy (1974) and The grin without a cat (1977). By studying his filmography, this research could identify the narratives strategies that had been used by the director, as well as the political discourse elaborated by them. The reflections about the corpus allowed verify how the interest for this Chilean process, viewed from France, has emerged from an empty space left by the usual delusion given by an earlier reference that had motivated the French left during the 1960s, also gone from Latin-American: the Cuban Revolution. So, we chose to also include in the research the Markers productions came from the relationship between this director and the Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos (ICAIC): Cuba si (1961), La bataille des dix millions (1970), On vous parle du Brésil: tortures (1969) and On vous parle du Brésil: Carlos Marighela (1970). The analysis of the films-selected shows that, during the UPs years in the power, there was a wish to approach Chile and France by valorising the Chileans way to the socialism and pointing it as a possibility to the European New Left. However, after the coup détat in 1973, this attempt has been revised and the Chilean experience has been used to elaborate lectures that pointed a legacy and lessons from the follow of Popular Unity. In this sense, the Markers productions denounce the rights actions to overthrow Allende, as well as built a self-criticism vision to indicate the lefts mistakes that had collaborated to the defeat. This wish to show a legacy and lessons has dialogued with the expectations of a Frenchs left that had have a common government programme tightly inspired in the Chileans UP ones, but that has required a revision after the failure of its Latin-American reference. From this point of view, this thesis proposes a study based on the circulation of cultural and political ideas between Latin American and France that delegated to this continent a central role in this relationship during the 1960s and the 1970s, and assigned to Chris Marker the function of a cinematographic mediator.

Artistas mulheres na ditadura brasileira: os casos de Wanda Pimentel e Teresinha Soares / Women artists under the Brazilian dictatorship: the cases of Wanda Pimentel and Teresinha Soares

Cornish, Patricia Branco 26 June 2018 (has links)
This study investigates the artistic productions of Wanda Pimentel and Teresinha Soares in the mid - 1960s and early 1970s, with the objective of analysing the issue of gender and the construction of female subjectivity. The research seeks to analyse the aesthetic relations of the works of Pimentel and Soares in light of the influences of feminist theories that migrated from the United States to Brazil in the late 1960s. This highlights the theoretical relations between gender issues and the artistic practices of the Brazilian vanguard. In addition, this research looks at the circulation of the works of Pimentel and Soares given that both were part of the Brazilian art circuit in collective exhibitions and biennials in this period. This context of the circulation of art allows a critical view of the return of the work of these artists to international exhibitions in the last three years; a return driven by the revisionist policies of museums on issues of gender and artistic production in countries outside the canonical cultural centres. The study expands the academic knowledge about artistic productions made by women in the 1960s and 1970s, who adopted a feminist critique without reference to social movements, contributing to the debate about the supposed marginalisation of women in the Brazilian art circuit during the dictatorship military.
