The only-child adolescent's lived experience of parental divorce / Dayle Hayley DorfmanDorfman, Dayle Hayley January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this study was to explore and describe the experience of an only-child
adolescent’s lived experience of parental divorce. Gestalt field and
phenomenological theory in conjunction with current literature provided an overview
of the theoretical underpinnings pertaining to the study. A qualitative research
approach with a case study of an only-child adolescent dealing with parental divorce
was conducted in an ethical manner by means of two face to face, one-on-one, in
depth interviews.
Two main themes were identified. The first being experienced feelings associated
with grief and bereavement, which revealed feelings of anger in the notion that the
participant’s childhood was lost as a result of the divorce and being caught between
the parental conflicts. The participant seemed to take it upon herself to take care of
those significant to her in fear that she would lose them and that the loss would
continue to be repeated. It was further revealed that when the only-child adolescent
felt a loss of her own identity she in turn felt out of control. The second theme
identified was; experience pressure due to being an only-child. Pressure in being an
only-child was very significant surrounding the participant. The participant shared a
great deal of feelings pertaining to feeling lonely and longing for a sibling. As parents
in divorce situations seem to be focussed on their divorce often the child suffers from
stress and the unrealistic expectations parents often have surrounding their children.
In this study the only-child could not seem to cope with the pressure and in times of
despair made use of coping mechanisms, mainly that of cutting to compensate for
the emotional pain experienced.
The researcher is of the opinion that the study delivered new found awareness into
the only-child adolescent’s lived experience of parental divorce and is in hope that
the new found results are utilised as a platform for further studies about this
vulnerable population. / MSW (Play Therapy), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015

Impact of School-Based Sex Education on College Students’ Rape Myth Acceptance: An Exploratory AnalysisCarpenter, Erika 01 January 2017 (has links)
Research indicates nearly one-fourth of college women fall victim to sexual assault (Cantor et. al., 2015). Two predictors of high proclivity to rape are endorsement of rape myths and adherence to traditional gender norms (King & Roberts, 2011). Additionally, research shows school-based sex education in the United States presents gender and sexual norms in troubling ways that disproportionately harm women (Kendall, 2013). However, research on sexual assault and rape myths have not examined the impact school-based sex education has on rape supportive attitudes. This study aimed to bridge that gap by using original survey data from undergraduate students at a large public university. Analyses indicate sex education has an inconsistent impact on rape myth acceptance; additionally, seeking sexual health information online was found to significantly lower endorsement of rape myths. Study outcomes suggest that further research is needed to explore the relationship between sex education curricula and rape supportive attitudes.

January 2019 (has links)
Abstract: This academic work aimed to verify how the newspapers “Folha de S.Paulo” and “O Estado de S. Paulo” covered the home fans only policy in the São Paulo state, where the act came into force in April 2016. The work came from the hypothesis that the newspapers made a limited and unquestioning coverage about the subject. According to the act, football matches in which Palmeiras, Corinthians, São Paulo and Santos play against each other should only have supporters of the home teams in the stadium – later, Ponte Preta and Guarani were also reached. This dissertation tried to discuss concepts about football violence and home fans only policy, relating them to Brazil’s current context, seeked to set legal parameters about the issue and interviewed several people interested at the subject. Methodologically, content analysis proposed by Bardin (2016) was used to check how was the work made by “Folha” and “Estado”, in addition of the interviews. The newspapers went through both quantitative and qualitative analysis: it was examined how the newspapers reported, investigated and thought about home fans only policy along the first two years of validity. From the collected data, it was inferred that the newspapers made a correct and continuous coverage, but not so deep and questioning, partially confirming the initial hypothesis / Mestre

The aim of this study was to examine eventual differences in parental child-rearing practices related to only child and first born of two children families. Twenty two families participated in this study, 12 only-child families and 10 two-children families. Families were matched according to socioeconomic level, age and sex of only child and first born. Only children’s age ranged from 4,6 to 6,1 years (M=5,5; sd=0,51) and first borns were aged from 4,3 to 6,3 years (M=5,1; sd=0,78). Mothers and fathers of both groups were interviewed about parental child-rearing practices. Answers were content-analyzed. The hypothesis of the study was not supported. According to chi-square test marginally significant differences were obtained in maternal and paternal child-rearing practices related to only child. Results indicated agreement between mother’s and father’s childrearing practices in both groups. Issues described as determinants of childrearing practices are discussed considering the role of the family in child development.

Potentiation Effects of Half-Squats Performed in a Ballistic or Nonballistic MannerSuchomel, Timothy J., Sato, Kimitake, DeWeese, Brad H., Ebben, William P., Stone, Michael H. 01 June 2016 (has links)
This study examined and compared the acute effects of ballistic and nonballistic concentric-only half-squats (COHSs) on squat jump performance. Fifteen resistance-trained men performed a squat jump 2 minutes after a control protocol or 2 COHSs at 90% of their 1 repetition maximum (1RM) COHS performed in a ballistic or nonballistic manner. Jump height (JH), peak power (PP), and allometrically scaled peak power (PPa) were compared using three 3 × 2 repeated-measures analyses of variance. Statistically significant condition × time interaction effects existed for JH (p = 0.037), PP (p = 0.041), and PPa (p = 0.031). Post hoc analysis revealed that the ballistic condition produced statistically greater JH (p = 0.017 and p = 0.036), PP (p = 0.031 and p = 0.026), and PPa (p = 0.024 and p = 0.023) than the control and nonballistic conditions, respectively. Small effect sizes for JH, PP, and PPa existed during the ballistic condition (d = 0.28–0.44), whereas trivial effect sizes existed during the control (d = 0.0–0.18) and nonballistic (d = 0.0–0.17) conditions. Large statistically significant relationships existed between the JH potentiation response and the subject's relative back squat 1RM (r = 0.520; p = 0.047) and relative COHS 1RM (r = 0.569; p = 0.027) during the ballistic condition. In addition, large statistically significant relationship existed between JH potentiation response and the subject's relative back squat strength (r = 0.633; p = 0.011), whereas the moderate relationship with the subject's relative COHS strength trended toward significance (r = 0.483; p = 0.068). Ballistic COHS produced superior potentiation effects compared with COHS performed in a nonballistic manner. Relative strength may contribute to the elicited potentiation response after ballistic and nonballistic COHS.

The aim of this study was to examine how women’s exercising is formed in different types of gym settings due to the increasing popularity of women only gyms. The study used symbolic interactionism as theoretic reference since it problematizes the taken for granted, a common view when it comes to gender differences. Participating observation was used to gather data at two unisex gyms and one women only gym. The result showed that women’s exercising was restrained in both settings due to their framing which appeared to reflect social ideals. This was most obvious at the women only gym though it is important to note that this institution seems to represent a counter reaction against the male culture at unisex gyms. The conclusion is that unisex gyms pose obstacles for women’s exercising, however, an alternative that provides gender segregation in this case seems to delimit women’s opportunity to diverge ideals and thus seems to reproduce the problem.

Perception of Synthetic Speech by a Language-Trained Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes)Heimbauer, Lisa A. 10 July 2009 (has links)
Ability of human listeners to understand altered speech is argued as evidence of uniquely human processing abilities, but early auditory experience also may contribute to this capability. I tested the ability of Panzee, a language-trained chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), reared and spoken to from infancy by humans, to recognize synthesized words. Training and testing was conducted with different sets of English words in natural, “harmonics-only” (resynthesized using only voiced components), or “noise-vocoded” (based on amplitude-modulated noise bands) forms, with Panzee choosing from “lexigram” symbols that represented words. In Experiment 1 performance was equivalent with words in natural and harmonics-only form. In Experiment 2 performance with noise-vocoded words was significantly higher than chance but lower than with natural words. Results suggest specialized processing mechanisms are not necessary to speech perception in the absence of traditional acoustic cues, with the more important factor for speech-processing abilities being early immersion in a speech-rich environment.

Bearings Only TrackingBingol, Haluk Erdem 01 February 2011 (has links) (PDF)
The basic problem with angle-only or bearings-only tracking is to estimate the
trajectory of a target (i.e., position and velocity) by using noise corrupted sensor
angle data. In this thesis, the tracking platform is an Aerial Vehicle and the target
is simulated as another Aerial Vehicle. Therefore, the problem can be defined as
a single-sensor bearings only tracking. The state consists of relative position and
velocity between the target and the platform. In the case where both the target
and the platform travel at constant velocity, the angle measurements do not
provide any information about the range between the target and the platform. The
platform has to maneuver to be able to estimate the range of the target. Two
problems are investigated and tested on simulated data. The first problem is
tracking non-maneuvering targets. Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), Range
Parameterized Kalman Filter and particle filter are implemented in order to track
non-maneuvering targets. As the second problem, tracking maneuvering targets
are investigated. An interacting multiple model (IMM) filter and different particle
filter solutions are designed for this purpose. Kalman filter covariance matrix
initialization and regularization step of the regularized particle filter are discussed
in detail.
