Conflict and Coercion in Southern France

Blair, Judith Jane 17 May 2006 (has links)
This paper endeavors to examine the mechanisms by which the crown of France was able to subsume the region of Languedoc in the wake of the Albigensian Crusade in the thirteenth century. The systematic use of Catholic doctrine and an inquisition run by the Dominican Order of Preachers allowed France to dominate the populace of the region and destroy any indigenous social, economic, and political structures.

In the Name of God

McCusker, Sharon 22 April 2009 (has links)
This exhibition is a direct response to my own religious upbringing. I chose to explore the oppression upon women, gays and people of color by religious intolerance. The Church dictates social and political mores that affect our society and culture and the way we are treated and governed. The use of the bible and conservative belief structures to defend the ill manner in which we are treated should not be ordained in today’s social construct. In the Name of god addresses issues from the Inquisition to the current war for control over women’s bodies and our reproductive systems. By revisiting the past and illustrating earlier evidence of religious corruption, I intend to demonstrate this countries lack of understanding of anything other.

Running Chanzas: Slave-State Interactions in Cartagena de Indias 1580 to 1713

Salazar Rey, Ricardo Raul January 2014 (has links)
My dissertation examines the transmission and establishment of the institution of slavery from medieval Iberia into the expanding Spanish Empire and its subsequent development. This involves understanding the dynamic interactions between the law, imperial institutions, slave owners, and the enslaved. I embarked upon this subject in response to a lacuna of historical knowledge of the transition and development of slavery as it moved between the Iberian Kingdoms and took root in the expanding Atlantic Empires. Without understanding the medieval background of imperial law it is impossible to understand the particular development of the institution of slavery in Spanish America. / History

Laurendeau, Danielle January 2008 (has links) (PDF)

SACRED, SUSPECT, FORBIDDEN: THE USE OF SPACE IN EARLY MODERN VENICE

Fox, Julie D 01 January 2013 (has links)
This dissertation argues that Venetian space in the sixteenth century was embedded with various boundaries that individuals challenged and that communities and Venetian secular and ecclesiastical authorities reinforced. The development of Venetian urban space played an essential role in the formation of Venetian civic identity, which in turn was predicated upon the myth of Venice. The time period examined includes the re-establishment of the Roman Inquisition, and the early period of the Inquisition in Venice, which were concomitant with a time of religious and social disruption. Documents of the Venetian government and contemporary diarists offer contextual evidence; however, trials before the Holy Office in Venice, particularly cases involving those accused of witchcraft, inform the greatest portion of this study. Drawing on such evidence, this dissertation challenges the argument that “Venetian” society was cohesive and well balanced. By repurposing common and sacred items to invoke supernatural entities and perform heterodox practices, those accused of witchcraft challenged the Venetian secular and ecclesiastical authorities as they created a competing vision regarding the definition of domestic sacred space. Examination of the neighborhood as a social space reveals boundaries, both real and imagined, and the challenges to the boundaries that those living on the margins of society displayed through the creation of their own communities. Finally, inhabitants’ use of public space and their movement throughout these spaces offers evidence of challenges to boundaries as well as the measures authorities took in re-establishing these boundaries. Ultimately, competing desires for belonging and legitimacy, as well as disagreements over physical, ideological, and social boundaries set Venetian inhabitants and authorities in opposition.

Muslim And Jewish

Turkcelik, Evrim 01 January 2003 (has links) (PDF)
In 1492, the Catholic Monarchs Isabel and Ferdinand conquered Granada, the last Muslim Kingdom in Spain, issued the edict of expulsion of Jews and charged Christopher Columbus to find out a western route to Indies who by coincidence discovered America. These three momentous events led to construction of Spanish national unity and of the Spanish world empire. In this study, what we are looking for is the impact of the first two events, the conquest of Granada and the expulsion of the Jews, on the formation of the Spanish national unity and the Spanish nationhood vis-&agrave / -vis Jews and Muslims in its historical context. In this study, the concept of nation-building would be employed not in economic but in political, religious and cultural terms. This study, by using the historical analysis method, found that centuries-long Muslim and Jewish presence in Spain and the Spaniards&rsquo / fight for exterminating this religious, cultural and political pluralism led to the formation of unitary Catholic state and society in Spain in the period under consideration.

Obras do Diabinho da Mão Furada is a controversial text, because it seems that, under a catholic and doctrinal shape, it transmits a message against that same doctrine and against its practices. The story was written in Portugal, in the beginning of the XVIIIth century, but it was published in Brazil in 1861-1862. Its authorship is imputed to Antonio José da Silva (1705-1739), an author known by his puppet plays, which he used to satirize the institutions, the moral and the social values of his age. Antonio José, better known as The Jew, was arrested and tortured in 1726, because of jewish practices. After that, he began to write and perform his plays, as a disguised form of agression and resistence to the Inquisition, and done it until his last imprisonment and death (1739). The motion of this present work is an investigation of the disguised message of the story Obras do Diabinho da Mão Furada, in order to decode the assaults against the Inquisition - assaults textually disguised beneath an eulogy of the catholic doctrine.

But those linguistic structures say a lot more than what we see on the surface. The words contain information beyond its linguistic constitution. Thus, because we know that there is information that we intend to analyze the text discursively O Santo Inquérito, the writer Dias Gomes, that, in general, tells the story of Branca Dias, a New Christian (former Jew), tried, convicted and killed in the fire of the Holy Inquisition. We intend to fundamentally identify the brands of power and misogyny contained in this work. However, we would not reach our goal if not for the valuable contribution of the assumptions of discourse analysis, which, as a method of interpretation, the approach of the countless ways that make up the narrative. Throughout the work, and present considerations discussed by various authors on subjects that are related to our object of study, including: Novinsky (2007) and Niskier (2006), who study the issue of the New Christians in Brazil; Muraro (1991) and Beuavoir (2009), who study gender and misogyny, and Pecheux (1995) and Bakhtin (2003), that support the discussions of Discourse Analysis.
