Forsake Thy Art, Forsake Thyself : A Lacanian Reading of Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray

This essay argues, with the help of Lacanian psychoanalysis, that Dorian Gray, the protagonist in Oscar Wilde’s novel, fails to abide by the rules governed by the culture of society. It is argued that Lacan’s theories about the mirror stage develop Dorian’s character and his realizations of his true self as part of the culture which shapes him. The mirror is represented by the four characters Basil Hallward, Lord Henry Wotton, Sibyl Vane, and Sibyl’s brother James. Basil, Henry, and Sibyl are all representations of different aspects of the mirror explained by Lacan’s theories, and these three characters help Dorian realize his true identity and self.

Los textos de CineScrúpulos son elaborados por los alumnos, profesores y colaboradores de la Facultad de Comunicaciones de la UPC. Las imágenes utilizadas son de distintas páginas web. El uso de las mismas se inscribe en lo estrictamente académico y divulgativo. / se ha convertido en un referente cinematográfico por derecho propio. La figura que se aleja como danzando, dueña de su propio futuro incierto, es una de las odas más hermosas al optimismo y a la sonrisa permanente, a pesar de las adversidades que afronta. Porque no debemos olvidar que Charlot es pobre pero digno, a pesar de que Chaplin, el personaje de carne y hueso, estuvo rodeado de una serie de polémicas por sus aparentes constructos ideológicos y por su conocido interés por las féminas. Pero eso no opaca un corpus fílmico que alumbró piezas que hoy son consideradas clásicos indiscutibles de la historia del cine. Por ello, en aras de saldar una cuenta pendiente, hemos decidido dedicar la presente edición de CineScrúpulos al genio de Chaplin. Pero no es lo único. Como suele suceder en cada ciclo académico, este número viene sazonado con algunos artículos interesantes. Nuevamente ingresamos al terreno de la tecnología para indagar si el universo de futuro que plantea la serie Black mirror tiene algún punto de conexión con el imaginario que despliega James Cameron en sus películas. De más está decir que el autor de Terminator (James Cameron, 1984) es un visionario y enfrenta en cada una de sus obras una serie de retos a nivel técnico pero también narrativo. Lástima que el presente texto haya sido elaborado antes del estreno de ese laberinto de discurso que es Black mirror: Bandersnatch (David Slade, 2018), pero prometemos en el futuro una indagación al respecto. Los dibujos animados también tienen su espacio en CineScrúpulos. Por supuesto, estamos hablando de los ejemplos más descabellados, surrealistas y transgresores que uno puede tener a mano. ¿Dragon Ball Z? No te pases. El universo de Chuck Jones está plagado de delicias que se disfrutan mejor a medida que pasan los años. Y Space jam (Joe Pytka, 1996) fue un producto altamente disfrutable en la década de los noventa. La gran interrogante que se plantea es si maneja el mismo tipo de comedia o toma otros referentes. Leer para creer. Y ya que hablamos de risotadas, el tercer artículo de fondo intenta establecer similitudes y diferencias entre un puñado de películas marca Tondero y otras que establecen nuevos derroteros en el cine de género en el Perú y que tiene que ver con el desenfreno. Es bueno hacer industria, pero las voces disidentes merecen ser escuchadas. Como puedes ver, esta edición está plagada de sonrisas.

A quest for selfhood : deconstructing and reconstructing female identity in Doris Lessing's early fiction / La quête de soi : déconstruire et reconstruire l'identité féminine dans les premiers romans de Doris Lessing

Écrivaine prolifique, anticonformiste, rebelle et provocatrice, Doris Lessing est considérée par la critique comme ayant été à l'avant-garde du féminisme, du communisme, de l'anticolonialisme et de la lutte contre l'apartheid. En lui accordant le prix Nobel de littérature en 2007, l'académie suédoise récompensait une « conteuse épique de l'expérience féminine, qui avec scepticisme, ardeur et une force visionnaire, scrute une civilisation divisée ». Cependant, ne retenir de Doris Lessing que des combats politiques d'ordre public, c'est oublier un thème essentiel et omniprésent dans ses écrits, celui de la quête de soi et du désir de connaissance de soi qui anime le sujet féminin. Pour atteindre ce but et au bout du compte se reconstruire, celui-ci passe d'abord par la déconstruction. C'est pourquoi ce travail se propose d'analyser l'approche déconstructionniste de Doris Lessing vis-à-vis de la question de l'identité féminine. Cette déconstruction ne doit pas être comprise au sens strictement derridien du terme, mais dans une perspective plus large qui est celle de la vision universelle et prophétique de l'auteure. En effet, Doris Lessing tente de déconstruire une conception essentialiste qui renverrait à une conception universaliste de l'identité féminine. Elle nie toute pensée logocentrique et remet en cause l'unité et le fixisme identitaire, et partant la généralité de la quête. Ceci révèle le nomadisme d'une pensée qui doit s'entendre, dans le sens deleuzien, comme une conception de l'identité de la femme comme fluide, changeante, sans frontières, ouverte à de nouvelles possibilités et avec un grand potentiel pour se re-désigner et se re-définir. / A prolific, anti-conformist, rebellious and provocative writer, Doris Lessing has been considered by critics as the forerunner of feminism, communism, anti-colonialism and anti-aparteid. By attributing to her the Nobel Price for Literature in 2007, the Swedish Academy rewarded an « epicist of the female experience, who, with skepticism, fire and visionary power subjected a divided civilization to scrutiny ». Reducing her work, however, to political issues means overlooking a crucial and omnipotent theme related to the quest for selfhood and the desire for self-knowledge animating the female subject, In order to gain this goal, it is first important to go through the experience of deconstruction. This is why this work will analyse Doris Lessing's deconstructive approach to the female identity. This deconstruction is not to be understood in the strict Derridian sense but in a broader persepective residing in the writer's universal and prophetic vision. In fact, Doris Lessing endeavors to deconstruct an essentialist conception which would lead to a universal apprehension of the female identity. She denies all logocentric thinking and questions fixed and unified identities, and by the same token, the universality of the quest. This reveals a nomadic thought, which in Deleuzian sense, entails that the female identity is fluid, changing, without frontiers, open to all possibilities and with a great potential to re-construct and re-define itself.

Självmedvetande hos djur och metoder för att mäta detta : en litteraturstudie / Self-awareness in animals and methods of measurement for this : a literature study

Self-awareness is a complex of abilities where empathy, theory of mind (ToM) and episodic memory are attributed to a higher level. Developed for demonstrating mirror self-recognition (MSR) in chimpanzees, mirror mark test has later been commonly used to demonstrate self-awareness in animals. Self-awareness is vital in issues about animal welfare, therefore examining methods of measurement for self-awareness is relevant for improving our understanding of this welfare. Pigs make suitable candidates by representing a species of great economic importance and because knowledge about how animals experience their life and their welfare has great ethical relevance. Consequently, the aim of this study is to illustrate self-awareness in animals and methods of measurement for this, using pigs as an illustrative example. To accomplish this research was conducted using Web of Science. When mirror mark test was applied on cleaner wrasse it was concluded that it passed the test but its relation to self-awareness and ToM was denied. In Pigs knowledge about the MSR is lacking, however they have showed more complex abilities like episodic-like memory and tactical deception, the latter being related to ToM. Cleaner wrasse here represents a species possessing a morphological disability in the mirror mark test, contributing to interpretation difficulties of its demonstrated behavior. Consequently, using the test as a standardized test for self-awareness is being questioned. A gradual perspective on self-awareness can entail better knowledge about which cognitive abilities are shared among species and possibly contribute to more justifiable assessments concerning the welfare of pigs and other farm animals.

Avatar Selection in the Metaverse : How users choose their digital persona in VRChat

1 Abstract Current endeavors in the tech-industry to create the first true metaverse, alongside other things, sparked the emergence of interest around virtual avatars, namely in the NFT community. Given the complexity of design-challenges associated with creating an immersive metaverse, its avatars and the systems they evolve around, this paper aims to understand user desires and motivational patterns for avatar selection in VRChat, a game that resembles much of what a future metaverse could look like. Therefore, nine qualitative interviews with a random sample of VRChat users were conducted. The number of participants was limited due to time constraints, and the results hence might be skewed towards a certain perspective; also, with the risk of users not answering truthfully, et cetera. In a broad sense, the key results validated Lin & Wang’s (2014) four motivational patterns of avatar creation (Virtual Exploration, Social Navigation, Identity Representation and Contextual Adaptation), however with significant differences and nuances within those, indicating important subtypes for each category. Preceding research however did not take into account the effects that apply to users employing advanced VR equipment. Statements from such participants in fact suggest the existence of a fifth dimension (Physical Sensation - the “feeling” of an avatar), possibly caused by a heightened sense of presence (due to using said equipment). On this note, the widespread implementation of mirrors in VRChat worlds, along with the discovery of what players described as “mirror-dwelling”, might also have a serious impact on this phenomenon. Furthermore, the results matched concepts such as the Proteus Effect and Deindividuation theory.

Polarization of Nonlinear Thomson Scattering from a High Intensity Laser Focus

Thomson scattering from free electrons in a high-intensity laser focus has been widely studied analytically, but not many measurements of this scattering have been made. We measure polarization-resolved nonlinear Thomson scattering from electrons in a high-intensity laser focus using a parabolic mirror. The weak scattering signal is distinguished from background noise using single-photon detectors and nanosecond time-resolution to distinguish a prompt scattering signal from noise photons. The azimuthal and longitudinal components of the fundamental, second, and third harmonics were measured. Our measurements reasonably match theoretical results, but also show some asymmetry in the emission patterns.

Mirror Symmetry for K3 Surfaces with Non-symplectic Automorphism

Mirror symmetry is the phenomenon, originally discovered by physicists, that Calabi-Yau manifolds come in dual pairs, with each member of the pair producing the same physics. Mathematicians studying enumerative geometry became interested in mirror symmetry around 1990, and since then, mirror symmetry has become a major research topic in pure mathematics. One important problem in mirror symmetry is that there may be several ways to construct a mirror dual for a Calabi-Yau manifold. Hence it is a natural question to ask: when two different mirror symmetry constructions apply, do they agree?We specifically consider two mirror symmetry constructions for K3 surfaces known as BHK and LPK3 mirror symmetry. BHK mirror symmetry was inspired by the LandauGinzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence, while LPK3 mirror symmetry is more classical. In particular, for algebraic K3 surfaces with a purely non-symplectic automorphism of order n, we ask if these two constructions agree. Results of Artebani Boissi`ere-Sarti originally showed that they agree when n = 2, and more recently Comparin-Lyon-Priddis-Suggs showed that they agree when n is prime. However, the n being composite case required more sophisticated methods. Whenever n is not divisible by four (or n = 16), this problem was solved by Comparin and Priddis by studying the associated lattice theory more carefully. In this thesis, we complete the remaining case of the problem when n is divisible by four by finding new isomorphisms and deformations of the K3 surfaces in question, develop new computational methods, and use these results to complete the investigation, thereby showing that the BHK and LPK3 mirror symmetry constructions also agree when n is composite.

Emotional and Physiological Responses of Fluent Listeners While Watching the Speech of Adults Who Stutter

Background: People who stutter produce speech that is characterized by intermittent, involuntary part-word repetitions and prolongations. In addition to these signature acoustic manifestations, those who stutter often display repetitive and fixated behaviours outside the speech producing mechanism (e.g. in the head, arm, fingers, nares, etc.). Previous research has examined the attitudes and perceptions of those who stutter and people who frequently interact with them (e.g. relatives, parents, employers). Results have shown an unequivocal, powerful and robust negative stereotype despite a lack of defined differences in personality structure between people who stutter and normally fluent individuals. However, physiological investigations of listener responses during moments of stuttering are limited. There is a need for data that simultaneously examine physiological responses (e.g. heart rate and galvanic skin conductance) and subjective behavioural responses to stuttering. The pairing of these objective and subjective data may provide information that casts light on the genesis of negative stereotypes associated with stuttering, the development of compensatory mechanisms in those who stutter, and the true impact of stuttering on senders and receivers alike. Aims: To compare the emotional and physiological responses of fluent speakers while listening and observing fluent and severe stuttered speech samples. Methods & Procedures: Twenty adult participants (mean age = 24.15 years, standard deviation = 3.40) observed speech samples of two fluent speakers and two speakers who stutter reading aloud. Participants' skin conductance and heart rate changes were measured as physiological responses to stuttered or fluent speech samples. Participants' subjective responses on arousal (excited-calm) and valence (happy-unhappy) dimensions were assessed via the Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM) rating scale with an additional questionnaire comprised of a set of nine bipolar adjectives. Outcomes & Results: Results showed significantly increased skin conductance and lower mean heart rate during the presentation of stuttered speech relative to the presentation of fluent speech samples (p<0.05). Listeners also self-rated themselves as being more aroused, unhappy, nervous, uncomfortable, sad, tensed, unpleasant, avoiding, embarrassed, and annoyed while viewing stuttered speech relative to the fluent speech. Conclusions: These data support the notion that stutter-filled speech can elicit physiological and emotional responses in listeners. Clinicians who treat stuttering should be aware that listeners show involuntary physiological responses to moderate-severe stuttering that probably remain salient over time and contribute to the evolution of negative stereotypes of people who stutter. With this in mind, it is hoped that clinicians can work with people who stutter to develop appropriate coping strategies. The role of amygdala and mirror neural mechanism in physiological and subjective responses to stuttering is discussed.

Near-single-cycle laser for driving relativistic plasma mirrors at kHz repetition rate - development and application / Génération d'impulsions laser proches du cycle optique pour le pilotage de miroirs plasma relativistes au kHz

Les impulsions laser ultrabrèves nous permettent de suivre en temps réel les phénomènes ultrarapides au sein de la matière à l’échelle microscopique. C’est précisément pour l’invention de la chimie à l’échelle femtoseconde, ou femtochimie, qu’Ahmed Zewail se vit décerner le prix Nobel de chimie en 1999. Depuis les utilisateurs du laser cherchent à augmenter la résolution temporelle, c’est-à-dire réduire la durée des impulsions laser. Aujourd’hui, nous savons générer des flashs lumineux à l’échelle attoseconde dans le domaine spectral de l’extrême ultraviolet (XUV) mais l’efficacité de génération reste faible et le développement de sources laser attosecondes intenses constitue un sujet de recherche très actif sur le plan international.Notre groupe au LOA se concentre sur la génération d’impulsions attoseconde sur miroir plasma en régime relativiste. Pour cela, il cherche à développer une source d’impulsions femtosecondes à forte cadence et fort contraste et suffisamment énergétiques pour atteindre des intensités relativistes (>> 10^18W/cm2) lorsqu’elles sont fortement focalisées sur un plasma surdense. Un plasma surdense réfléchit la lumière incidente et par conséquent agit comme un miroir qui se déplaçant à vitesse relativiste et qui comprime l’impulsion incidente, produisant ainsi un flash attoseconde par cycle optique. En utilisant des impulsions proches d’un cycle optique, il est donc envisageable de générer une seule impulsion attoseconde intense pendant l’interaction.Dans la première partie de mon travail de thèse, j’ai réalisé un compresseur nonlinéaire pour réduire la durée des impulsions issues d’une chaîne à double dérive de fréquence (10mJ, 25fs, 1kHz) à phase enveloppe-porteuse (CEP) stabilisée. En propageant les impulsions du laser à haute intensité dans une fibre creuse remplie de gaz rare, j’ai réussi à générer des impulsions de 1.3 cycle optique avec une puissance crête autour de 1TW avec une CEP stabilisée. Dans un deuxième temps, j’ai mis en forme spatialement et temporellement les impulsions issues du compresseur à fibre pour générer à la fois des impulsions attosecondes intenses et des faisceaux d’électrons énergétiques sur un miroir plasma à gradient de densité contrôlé. Ces expériences nous permis, pour la première fois, de mettre en évidence la production d’impulsions attosecondes isolées dans l’XUV, l’émission corrélée de faisceaux d’électrons énergétiques en régime relativiste ainsi qu’un nouveau régime d’accélération d’électrons à très long gradient plasma. / Very short light pulses allow us to resolve ultrafast processes in molecules, atoms and condensed matter. This started with the advent of Femtochemistry, for which Ahmed Zewail received the Novel Prize in Chemistry in 1999. Ever since, researcher have been trying to push the temporal resolution further and we have now reached attosecond pulse durations. Their generation, however, remains very challenging and various different generation mechanisms are the topic of heated research around the world.Our group focuses on attosecond pulse generation and ultrashort electron bunch acceleration on solid targets. In particular, this thesis deals with the upgrade of a high intensity, high contrast, kHz, femtosecond laser chain to reach the relativistic interaction regime on solid targets. Few cycle driving laser pulses should allow the generation of intense isolated attosecond pulses. A requirement to perform true attosecond pump-probe exeriments.To achive this, a HCF postcompression scheme has been conceived and implemented to shorten the duration of a traditional laser amplifier. With this a peak intensity of 1TW was achieved with near-single-cycle pulse duration. For controlled experiments, a vacuum beamline was developed and implemented to accurately control the laser and plasma conditions on target.During the second part of this thesis, this laser chain was put in action to drive relativistic harmonic generation on solid targets. It was the first time ever that this has been achieved at 1 kHz. By CEP gating the few-cycle-pulses, single attosecond pulses were generated. This conclusion has been supported by numerical simulations. Additionally a new regime to accelerate electron bunches on soft gradients has been detected.
