True words are not beautiful : foreignising Ah Q to fulfil the skoposGartner, Bernd 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Afrikaans and Dutch))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis is an analysis of The True Story of Ah Q in English translation (in Chinese-English bilingual
format). By applying new translation theories, specifically those of Christiane Nord and Lawrence Venuti,
and by demonstrating their applicability it is hoped that this research project will contribute to these
theories becoming more accepted in China. The skopos theory and the concepts domestication and
foreignisation are the main translation theories utilised in this thesis.
The research was begun with the hypothesis that the translators domesticated the English target text,
based on Venuti’s belief that the majority of English translations domesticate the original.
The two main research questions are:
What is the dominant translation strategy utilised by the translators?
Does this strategy fulfil the skopos (i.e. the aims of the translation)?
The research will also give suggestions for an improved translation and a more effective translation
strategy in light of the skopos. In addition, the study will determine whether the bilingual format is suited
for the fulfilment of the current skopos. As pointed out in the publisher’s note, this Chinese-English
bilingual version of The True Story of Ah Q is intended to exhibit this modern Chinese classic as a great
piece of Chinese literature. The primary aim of the translation is to give readers a real experience of the
depth and the heights of Chinese culture. The secondary aims of the translation focus on language
learning as well as the function for translators (namely to use this translation as an example for future
translations). This research project will determine if the translation has fulfilled these aims.
The translation theories on which the analyses in this thesis are based are presented in the literature study
(chapter 2). This provides the foundation for the comparison between the Chinese ST and the English TT,
the evaluation of the translation, and subsequent conclusions. Chapters 3 and 4 present the application of
the theory, divided into an analysis of the macro and microstructures respectively. Translation decisions are analysed on these two levels within the theoretical insights presented in chapter 2. It will be these
chapters that provide the foundation for the research findings of this thesis. In cases where improvements
of the translation are proposed, suggestions will be made and motivated by theoretical insights.
The final chapter (chapter 5) will answer the research questions in detail, based on the individual analyses
made in chapters 3 and 4 and motivate these answers based mainly on the translation theories of Nord and
Venuti. These answers as well as the suggestions for an improved translation are the main contributions
that this thesis makes to translation studies. Lastly, suggestions for further research are made in order to
stimulate further research on English translations produced in China.
klassieke werk as ’n belangrike Chinese literêre teks daar te stel.

Thesis (MA (Afrikaans Language))--University of Stellenbosch, 1990. / 199 leaves single sided printed, preliminary pages and numbered pages 1-187. Includes bibliography. Digitized using a Bizhub 250 Scanner to pdf format (OCR). / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: An evaluation of semantic information in a dictionary must take into account all aspects of meaning of
lexical items. Therefore the different homonyms and polysemous senses of lexical items and the
underlying semantic relations between lexical items are accounted for.
A description should be given of the lexical items which form the macrostructure of HAT. These
lexical items include sublexical, multilexical and free lexical items. The treatment of multilexical items
in HAT is not satisfactory at present and suggestions are made for the improvement of the situation.
Possible solutions for distinguishing between homonymy and polysemy are given. Suggestions to
determine the possible polysemous senses of a lexical item are also made. The ordering of polysemous
senses and different homonyms are discussed. It is essential to make use of a synchronic criterion to
distinguish between homonymy and polysemy.
The HAT's treatment of semantic relations between lexical items is not always very succesfull. The
semantic relation which receives the most substantial treatment is that of semantic inclusion between
lexical items. The HAT's treatment of synonyms is not without problems. More attention should be
given to semantic linking and semantic opposition between lexical items.
An evaluation of the system of cross-references in HAT is given, with special reference to the function
of cross-references. Sometimes indistinct typographical conventions are used and they confuse the
user of the dictionary. The indistinct use of typographical conventions has a detrimental influence on
the transfer of information. The cross-reference system of HAT can be improved by an informative
explanation in the general introduction, focusing on ways and means to use it more specifically,
unambiguously and consistently.
A distinction is made between various types of definitions used to define lemmas. Well known
lexicographic definitions such as definitions per genus et differentia, synonymdefinitions, example
definitions, circular definitions and descriptive definitions are discussed. The usage definition and two
definitions which explicate a semantic plus value, the contrast and diminutive definitions, are identified.
Attention is also given to the role of the general introduction in a standard synchronic dictionary.
Suggestions are made to improve the general introduction of HAT. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Wanneer semantiese inligting in 'n woordeboek ondersoek word, word alle aspekte van leksikale items
se betekenis in ag geneem. Dit sluit homonimiese vorme en polisemiese onderskeidinge van leksikale
items in, asook die semantiese betrekkinge wat leksikale items onderling met mekaar aangaan.
Die leksikale items wat die makrostruktuur van die HAT vorm, word beskryf. Dit sluit subleksikale,
multileksikale en vrye leksikale items in. Verskillende tipes multileksikale en subleksikale items word
onderskei.
Verskillende tipes definisies waarmee leksikale items gedefinieer word, word onderskei. Bekende
leksikografiese definisies soos genus-differentia-definisies, sinoniemdefinisies, voorbeelddefinisies,

Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Kaaps is one of the oldest dialects of Afrikaans that originated in the Cape Colony during the seventeenth century and is still used today by the working class Coloured community of the Cape Peninsula. Although it is mainly used as a spoken dialect, it is also applied in the literature. It is especially the use of Kaaps in the literature by Adam Small that helped to establish Kaaps in the Afrikaans literature and to bring about a newfound interest in this dialect.
Kaaps has been undervalued for a long time due to the fact that it is associated with people of colour. For this reason Kaaps has been one of the most stigmatised dialects of Afrikaans. Today academics approach language variation differently by viewing all dialects of a language as equal. For this reason Kaaps is no longer seen as inferior to the standardized form of Afrikaans. Kaaps is also no longer restricted to a spoken dialect, but is also reflected in literature, theatre, music, television, radio and the printed media. The focus of this study is to investigate the use of Kaaps in the Afrikaans tabloid, Son. Son is the first Afrikaans tabloid that appeared in South Africa and is the first Afrikaans newspaper to make use of a dialect of Afrikaans that is not the standardized form, but an informal dialect that some refer to as Kaaps. The aim of the study is to investigate whether the language used in Son is representative of Kaaps and to what extent the written language correlates with the spoken Kaaps, as it is used by its speakers. This is done by a text analysis of Son-articles as well as a questionnaire that was filled in by Kaaps speaking teenagers. Furthermore the study investigated the correlation between language and identity and to what extent the respondents could identify with Kaaps as well as the language that is used in Son.
The conclusion of this study is that the language used in Son cannot be viewed as a true representation of Kaaps, but rather as an informal Afrikaans that use elements of Kaaps. Although the language in Son cannot be seen as a true reflection of Kaaps, the study concludes that the teenage speakers of Kaaps can identify with the language that is used in Son. The study also found that the negative perception of Kaaps still exists among the users of Kaaps. Regardless of this negative perception, this research showed that Kaaps can be used effectively in the media and that the success of Son can be attributed to the language used in its newspaper.

A critical evaluation of bilingual Chinese/English dictionaries for elementary and intermediate Mandarin learners at Stellenbosch UniversityWang, Mei 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The number of Chinese-learners in South Africa has increased rapidly in recent
years, but the quality of the dictionaries that are available for their use has not
improved much. The more students study Chinese, the more it becomes necessary to
create suitable dictionaries to facilitate their studies. In the hope of meeting this need,
this study selects two written dictionaries commonly used by students at Stellenbosch
University in South Africa, namely the Oxford Beginner's Chinese Dictionary and the
Concise English-Chinese Chinese-English Dictionary, to analyze, comment on and
compare in terms of structure and equivalence. Using the results of this analysis, this
study offers suggestions for improving the quality of future Mandarin learner’s
dictionaries.
This study takes into consideration the situation faced by students when learning
Chinese abroad, especially in South Africa, the development of pedagogical
lexicography in Chinese-learner’s dictionaries in China and abroad, the relationship
between online dictionaries and written dictionaries, and some special characteristics
of the Chinese language, all of which factors greatly influence the making of a
dictionary.
Theoretically and methodically, this study is based on Function Theory as
presented by Sven Tarp. According to Function Theory, before writing a dictionary,
lexicographers must analyze specific types of users in specific types of situations.
This study attempts to follow Tarp’s suggestion by analyzing a small group of
dictionary users with the help of a survey conducted by the author in an attempt to get
a general idea of how Mandarin learners at Stellenbosch University use dictionaries. The main focus of this study is the frame structure, microstructure,
macrostructure and dictionary equivalence in two dictionaries--Concise and
Beginner’s. After carefully analyzing these aspects of the dictionaries, the author
identifies the sections of these dictionaries which successfully present information in
a way that will be most beneficial for their intended audiences. The study goes on to pinpoint less-successful sections of the two dictionaries and provides suggestions for
improvement. In sum, this study focuses on using the principle of Function Theory to
determine what features should be included in Mandarin learner’s dictionaries to make
them more suitable for elementary and intermediate learners of Mandarin at
Stellenbosch University, in South Africa, and, by extension, in other parts of the world.
'n woordeboek spesifieke tipes gebruikers in spesifieke situasies analiseer. Hierdie

A skopos-based analysis of Breytenbach’s Titus AndronicusGreen, Benjamin Stephen 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Breyten Breytenbach's Afrikaans translation of William Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus is
a little known member of the corpus of Afrikaans Shakespeare plays. Published without
annotations in South Africa in 1970 and performed in Cape Town in the same year, it has
never been performed again and the text has attracted no academic review or led to any
subsequent editions. However, situated in 1970 in the heyday of the Apartheid regime, the
play's production broke attendance records in Cape Town and was accompanied by
substantial public controversy.
In this thesis, the author analyses Breytenbach's translation in order to determine whether
the translator had an ideological agenda in performing the translation. The analysis is
based on a preliminary discussion of culture and ideology in translation, and then uses the
Skopostheorie methodology of Hans J. Vermeer (as developed by Christiane Nord) to
assess the translation situation and the target text. The target text has been analysed on
both a socio-political and microstructural level.
The summary outcome of the analysis is that the translator may possibly have tried to
promote an anti-Apartheid ideology by translating the play. The outcome is based on
several contextual factors such as the socio-political situation in South Africa in which the
translated play was published and performed, the translator's stated opposition to the
Apartheid system, the choice of Titus Andronicus for translation and production, and to a
lesser extent the level of public controversy that accompanied the target text's production
in the theatre. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Breyten Breytenbach se Afrikaanse vertaling van William Shakespeare se Titus
Andronicus is 'n min bekende eksemplaar van die versameling Shakespeare toneelstukke
in Afrikaans. Dit is sonder enige annotasies in 1970 in Suid-Afrika uitgegee, en is dieselfde
jaar in Kaapstad opgevoer.
ontleed. Die doelteks is op sowel sosiaalpolitiese as mikrostrukturele vlak ontleed.
Die samevattende uitkoms van die ontleding is dat die vertaler moontlik 'n anti-Apartheid
ideologie probeer bevorder het deur hierdie toneelstuk te vertaal. Hierdie uitkoms is
gegrond op verskeie samehangende faktore, soos die sosiaalpolitiese omstandighede in
Suid-Afrika waarin die toneelstuk uitgegee en opgevoer is, die vertaler se vermelde
teenkanting teen die Apartheidstelsel, die keuse van Titus Andronicus vir vertaling en
opvoering, en tot 'n mindere mate die vlak van openbare omstredenheid wat gepaard
gegaan het met die doelteks se opvoering in die teater.

Kompleksiteit in taakgebaseerde onderrig en leer van Afrikaans as tweede taal binne universiteitskonteksAdendorff, Elbie Maria 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The implementation of a multilingual language policy for Higher Education in South Africa
(2002) requires the teaching and learning of different languages as a second or additional
language – also the teaching of Afrikaans for specific purposes to students as adult learners.
The teaching of Afrikaans for specific purposes to students as adult learners has not
received much attention in the South African context, especially research on the learning
and teaching of Afrikaans for specific purposes in a university context. This research on
Afrikaans as a second language has as framework the theory of Task-Based Language
Learning and Teaching. The research focuses on issues relating to complexity in task-based
challenges which await students in a multilingual university context and the way in which a
task-based teaching syllabus contributes to these needs and challenges.
The main focus of this study is to explore the possibilities of a multiperspective approach to
the analysis of complexity in the design of a task-based syllabus for university students. The
aim of such a multiperspective approach is to research the full spectrum of approaches
which is available to research task complexity. The adequacy of the different approaches lies
in the architecture of the compositionality and combination of the individual researchers’
frameworks, which each on its’ own has elements of incompleteness regarding the
development of students’ interlanguage. There can be argued that the multiperspective
approach to complexity in task-based syllabus design is beneficial to task design for an
Afrikaans task-based syllabus at university level because each approach promotes the
development of an interlanguage. The central purpose of this study is to investigate the nature and properties of
communication tasks employed in generic social and academic communication in Afrikaans
on a university campus in South Africa within the framework of task-based language learning
and teaching, as well as syllabus design. This study analyses the communication tasks in
accordance with the needs of second language learners of Afrikaans in the context of
campus communication. For the purpose of the research, a needs analysis was conducted
through the use of a questionnaire and interviews with university students. This needs
analysis shows that students whose first language is not Afrikaans, have the need to acquire
communicative skills in Afrikaans to communicate effectively with fellow students and
lecturers at the university. As a result of the needs analysis ten student-student-dialogues
and ten student-lecturer-dialogues were constructed to simulate campus communication. The study researches the various cognitive and linguistic taskelements. The purpose of this
research is to to examine the cognitive and structural properties in a task design which
address the communication needs of students and lecturers for learning generic Afrikaans
for communicating on campus. A framework for the analysis of complexity in the
development of a task-based syllabus for a teaching and learning program for the teaching
and learning of Afrikaans as a second language in the multilingual university context of a
South African university campus will be proposed. The study examines the different
components of tasks and the components of designing a syllabus, and how they influence
the teaching and learning of the second language. This study analyses various complexity
properties of the twenty Afrikaans dialogues in order to determine criteria for syllabus
designers on how tasks can be graded and sequenced within a task-based language
learning and teaching syllabus for second language learners of Afrikaans.
kommunikasietake in Afrikaans by ’n universiteitskampus in Suid-Afrika. Dit vind plaas binne
die konteks van hedendaagse tweedetaalteorieë oor taakgebaseerde taalleer en -onderrig,
sowel as sillabusontwerp. Hierdie studie analiseer die kommunikasietake aan die hand van
die behoeftes van tweedetaalstudente van Afrikaans binne die konteks van kampuskommunikasie.
Dié behoeftes is bepaal na aanleiding van behoefte-analises wat onder
universiteitstudente onderneem is.
leer van Afrikaans as ’n tweede taal. Voorts verskaf die studie ook ontledings met betrekking
tot die kompleksiteitskenmerke van die twintig dialoë in Afrikaans sodat kriteria vir sillabusontwerpers
geskep kan word waarvolgens hulle take binne die taakgebaseerde leer en
onderrig kan gradeer en orden om ’n sillabus vir tweedetaalstudente van Afrikaans te
ontwerp.

Metalexicographic criteria for a monolingual descriptive dictionary presenting the standard variety of YipunuTomba Moussavou, Fatima 12 1900 (has links)
Dissertation (DLitt)--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The dictionaries available in the Gabonese languages are all translation dictionaries biased towards
French and compiled by missionaries and colonial administrators. No proper monolingual dictionaries
exist in the Gabonese languages. There is therefore a need for monolingual dictionaries in the
Gabonese languages, particularly in Yipunu, one of the Bantu languages (B 43) spoken in the South of
Gabon. Yipunu is a regional vehicular language or a major or majority language. Yipunu is a
domestic language i.e spoken inside Bapunu communities or a mother tongue or first language and
Yipunu is also taught as subject in the national educational system.
As a response to this need, this dissertation proposes metalexicographic criteria for the compilation of a
standard descriptive monolingual dictionary with special reference to Yipunu. The proposed model
focuses primarily on the inclusion and the treatment of the standard variety of Yipunu and to a lesser
degree on the other varieties. Such a model is directed at a dictionary primarily dealing with the needs
of the average, educated members of the Yipunu speech community, the mother-tongue speakers, and
also designed for experienced and advanced learners of Yipunu and their teachers.
This study aims to point out how important standard descriptive monolingual dictionaries are in general
and specifically in the case of African Bantu languages. This study also aims to highlight the
importance for Gabonese lexicographers to adopt modern lexicographical principles in dictionary
compilation such as the user-driven dictionary and the corpus-based dictionary. This model, although
devised for Yipunu, will eventually serve as model for the design of standard descriptive dictionaries in
all Gabonese languages. This study provides information about the content and the structures of such a
dictionary and is structured as follows: Chapter 1 focuses on introducing and contextualising the research. It presents the linguistic situation
in Gabon with reference to the status of Yipunu. It also shows the importance and the relevance of the
research and gives the theoretical basis, methodology, hypotheses and objectives underlying the study.
Chapter 2 criticises the lexicographic works in Yipunu in order to improve the quality of future
Yipunu dictionaries and examines the major needs of Yipunu lexicography.
Chapter 3 envisages some aspects of the standardisation of Yipunu. It targets the discussion at the
level of the language analysis namely the phonology, the grammar, the dictionary and the orthography
of Yipunu.
Chapter 4 discusses the user perspective, which guides the dictionary compilation. It focuses on the
user profile, user typologies and dictionary functions. The intended dictionary has a multifunctional
character. Special attention is given to a pioneering survey of dictionary use among Gabonese students
and to the discussion of the teaching of dictionary use in Gabon.
Chapter 5 deals with the dictionary plan. Different aspects such as the style guide, the genuine
purpose, the dictionary basis, data collection, the data collection policy, data collection methods and the
corpus of the proposed dictionary are discussed
Chapter 6 elaborates on the macrostructure of the proposed dictionary. The dictionary gives priority to
a strict alphabetical macrostructure. Macrostructural elements, lemmatisation strategies, and types of
lemmas and articles to be included in the proposed dictionary are discussed.
Chapter 7 focuses on the microstructure of the proposed dictionary. The model suggests an obligatory
microstructure and an extended obligatory microstructure and discusses the variety of data to be
included in the articles of the proposed dictionary.
Chapter 8 deals with the outer text section and the guide structures of the proposed dictionary, which
includes front and back matter texts. Polyaccessibility, a system of cross-referencing, and lemmatic and
non-lemmatic addressings are characteristics of the proposed dictionary. Chapter 9 makes some concluding remarks by highlighting the focus point of each chapter of the
dissertation. It gives also some recommendations for the research.
word. Jipoenoe is 'n streeksvoertaal of 'n hoof- of meerderheidstaal.
woordeboekgebruik in Gaboen.
