The Sedimentology of Pecausett Pond: A Case Study for Sediment and Contaminants Sotrage in FloodPlain Tidal Ponds on the Lower Connecticut River

In this study I assess spatial and temporal patterns of sediment deposition in Pecausett Pond, located along the tidal extent of the Connecticut River, in order to assess the role of tides in the transport and storage of sediment and associated contaminants within floodplain tidal ponds. Findings reveal that tidal ponds have significantly higher rates of sedimentation compared to neighboring marshes due to the fact that these ponds have more accommodation space and receive uninterrupted tidal exchange with the main river. Tidal tie channels introduce a pulse of suspended sediment and contaminants from the main river into these ponds each flood tide, with sedimentation rates fast enough to allow settling before the subsequent ebb tide can transport these sediments back to the main river (i.e. tidal pumping). Some studies performed on the tidal floodplain of the Connecticut River show high deposition rates and have attributed periods of high accumulation to anomalously high river discharge events. However, this project shows that tides are more likely the major mechanism responsible for transporting and storing sediment and associated contaminants at backwater sites located along the tidal floodplain. Deposition rates in this 3-4 m deep pond exceed 2 cm/yr. These rates are far too high to maintain equilibrium morphology for much longer. However, ground penetrating radar surveys from the study site reveal truncated stratigraphy common to erosional unconformities, which suggest that mechanisms for sediment remobilization and removal may exist. Periods of episodic erosion therefore may be helping to maintain the morphology in this shallow environment, and allow for the high rates of short-term deposition. Further, a sudden increase in percent inorganic potentially associated with the opening or clearance of the tie-channel is observed at a sediment depth approximately between 1.9 to 2.2 m. A radiocarbon date obtained below this transition is consistent with a significant drop in sedimentation prior to this tie-channel development. High rates of sedimentation in Pecausett Pond are therefore likely relatively recent phenomena, transpiring over the last few centuries following early colonization.

Modeling and Data Analysis of Large Ring Laser Gyroscopes

Ringlaser dienen dazu, durch genaue inertiale Messungen Rotationen ohne Bezug auf ein externes Referenzsystem lokal und praktisch in Echtzeit zu bestimmen. Sie wurden in den 1970er Jahren insbesondere für die Navigation von Flugzeugen entwickelt. In den letzten Jahrzehnten wurden Ringlaser dann so weit verbessert, dass sie nun auch als eigenständige Messinstrumente in der Geodäsie Verwendung finden. Aufgrund der erreichbaren Genauigkeit ist es inzwischen möglich, Variationen in der Erdrotation mit der dafür erforderlichen Präzision zu detektieren. Der stabilste unter den Ringlasern, der so genannte Ringlaser "G" der geodätischen Fundamentalstation Wettzell, erreicht eine Sensitivität von 1.2 x 10 -11 nrad. Damit ist dieses Instrument in der Lage, Neigungen von bis zu 1 nrad (dies entspricht einem Signal von 0.2 mas in der Polbewegung, in Änderung der Rotationsgeschwindigkeit der Erde) im täglichen und halb-täglichen Frequenzband zu messen. Motivation dieser Arbeit ist es, der in den letzten Jahren erreichten Verbesserung des Auflösungsvermögens und der Sensorstabilität Rechnung zu tragen und die für die Auswertung von Ringlaserdaten benutzten geophysikalischen Modelle weiter zu verbessern, um dadurch die variable Rotation der Erde noch präziser vermessen zu können. Die dafür relevanten Effekte werden in den einzelnen Kapiteln dieser Arbeit separat behandelt. Nach einer Einführung werden in Kapitel 2 dieser Arbeit drei lokale, topozentrische Koordinatensysteme konstruiert, mit welchen sich das zu beobachtende Sagnac-Signal eines Ringlasers in der ersten post-Newtonischen Näherung der Allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie adäquat beschrieben lässt. In Kapitel 3 wird ein verbessertes Modell für die Orientierung des Ringlasers, basierend auf Ergebnissen von Dehant et al. (1999), entwickelt. Ein in den bislang benutzten Modellen vernachlässigter Neigungsterm konnte dabei identifiziert werden. Ein Modell für die retrograde tägliche Polbewegung der Erde wird in Kapitel 4 entwickelt. Ausgehend von den dynamischen Gleichungen für eine starre Erde werden diese um elastische Effekte und Einflüsse der Mehrschichtigkeit der Erde ergänzt und die entsprechenden Euler-Liouvilleschen Gleichungen und Transfer-Funktionen abgeleitet. Gezeiteneinflüsse des Ozeans, speziell die dadurch hervorgerufene sub-tägliche Variation der Erdrotation und ozeanische Auflasteffekte, werden in Kapitel 5 behandelt. Es wird gezeigt, dass die ozeanischen Signale größer als 10 -9 Δf0 (Δf0 348 Hz für den Ringlaser "G") sind und damit in den Messdaten des Ringlasers "G" nachweisbar sein sollten. Auf Grundlage der in dieser Arbeit entwickelten Modelle wurde eine 168 Tage (30. April 17. Oktober 2010) umfassenden Datenreihe des Ringlasers "G" in Kapitel 6 ausgewertet. Für die Auswertung wurde die Software ETERNA 3.40 genutzt und entsprechend angepasst. Die tägliche retrograde Polbewegung konnte dabei mit einer Genauigkeit von 0.15 mas bestimmt werden. Diese Auswertung beweist ein weiteres Mal die Existenz eines flüssigen Erdkerns. Des weiteren konnte gezeigt werden, dass bestimmte Gezeitenparameter des halb-täglichen Frequenzbandes durch lokale Effekte beeinflusst werden. Lokal gemessene Luftdruckdaten wurden benutzt, um den Einfluss atmosphärischer Auflasteffekte auf den Ringlaser "G" zu untersuchen. Die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit zeigen, dass sich für diese Effekte kein signifikanter Einfluss nachweisen lässt. Die Arbeit schließt mit einer Zusammenfassung der Resultate, einer Beschreibung der sich ergebenden Schlussfolgerungen und einem Ausblick auf zukünftige Arbeiten auf dem Gebiet der Ringlaseranalyse. / Ring laser gyroscopes measure inertial rotations locally and in real-time without the need for an external reference system. Initially, they were developed for aircraft navigation applications in the 1970s. With the improvement of ring laser technology during the last decades large ring laser gyroscopes (RLGs) are nowadays used as independent geodetic instruments. Due to the achievable accuracy more and more geophysical signals become observable in the data. The G-ring located at the Geodetic Observatory Wettzell is reckoned as the most stable one amongst the running large RLGs and reaches a sensitivity of 1.2 x 10 -11 nrad. Therefore, the instrument is able to detect a tilt signal of 1 nrad (equivalent to a signal of 0.2 mas in polar motion or 10 -9 Ω0 in variation of Earth rotation rate) in the diurnal and semi-diurnal band. This motivates us to improve previous geophysical models and estimate associated tilt and Earth rotation signals, which are the focuses of this Thesis. Firstly, we construct three local proper topocentric reference frames and interpret the Sagnac effect observed by large RLGs in the first post-Newtonian (PN) approximation of Einstein's theory of gravity. Secondly, in Chapter 3 we develop an improved orientation model for the Sagnac platform, based on the numerical results of Dehant et al. (1999). A missing tilt term in previous RLG tilt models is found. In Chapter 4, based on the Euler-Liouville equations or nutation transfer functions for a rigid Earth, a purely elastic Earth, a two-layered Earth and a three-layered Earth, five retrograde diurnal polar motion models are computed with the HW95 tidal potential catalogue. Thirdly, ocean tide effects (two aspects: effects on sub-daily variations of Earth rotation and loading effect on tilt) are considered in Chapter 5. We show that the Sagnac signals induced by ocean tides are larger than 10 -9 Δf0 (Δf0 348 Hz for the G-ring) and their influences are visible in the G-ring. Fourthly, based on the above-mentioned improved models and 168 days (from Apr.30 to Oct.17 in 2010) of G-ring data, in the diurnal band, we estimate the retrograde diurnal polar motion signal with an accuracy of 0.15 mas. The Earth tide software ETERNA 3.40 was adopted and modified to analyse this data. Our estimation provides one more evidence for the existence of the Earth's fluid outer core. Furthermore, we found that the tidal parameters for the G-ring are affected by the cavity and topographic effects in the semi-diurnal band. The local air pressure record is used in order to investigate the atmospheric loading effect on the G-ring by a simple regression model. Nevertheless, the preliminary result shows that no significant influence from atmospheric loading on our estimation is found. This Thesis closes with a summary of the obtained results, conclusions and suggestions how the analysis of ring laser data could be improved in future work.

The Contribution of Glacial Isostatic Adjustment to Past and Contemporary Relative Sea-Level Rise Along the Atlantic Coast of Europe

Contemporary and future relative sea-level (RSL) rise that can be attributed to anthropogenic climate change sees significant spatial variability as a result of the processes that underlie it. Some of the processes that contribute to RSL rise unrelated to anthropogenic climate change can and have had significant contributions. In this work, we examined the contributions of one of these processes, glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA), in the coastal regions of Atlantic Europe. These regions have seen significant RSL rise associated with a collapsing peripheral bulge throughout the Holocene and are expected to see more throughout the Anthropocene. Using the recently published paleo sea level database (García-Artola et al., 2018) which follows the HOLSEA RSL data assessment and reporting protocol (Khan et al., 2019) we determined optimal Earth model parameters for much of Atlantic Europe. These optimal parameters fit the data well and largely agree with values determined for previous works on peripheral bulges along the coasts of North America. We further used these results to perform a rudimentary sea-level budget analysis at 10 tide gauge stations, yielding results with high uncertainties and significant discrepancies between observed and projected rates of RSL change for half (5) of the tide gauge stations. Our results lead to the conclusion that GIA remains an important factor when predicting present and future RSL change.

Morphodynamics of a bedrock confined estuary and delta: The Skeena River Estuary

Bedrock islands add variation to the estuarine system that results in deviations from typical unconfined estuarine sediment transport patterns. Limited literature exists regarding the dynamics of seabed morphology, delta formation, sediment divergence patterns, and sedimentary facies classifications of non-fjordic bedrock confined systems. Such knowledge is critical to address coastal management concerns adequately. This research presents insights from the Skeena Estuary, a macrotidal estuary in northwestern Canada with a high fluvial sediment input (21.2-25.5 Mtyr-1). Descriptions on sub-environments, stratification, and sediment accumulation within the Skeena Estuary utilize HydroTrend model outputs of riverine sediment and discharge, Natural Resources Canada radiocarbon-dated sediment cores and grain size samples, and acoustic Doppler current profiler and conductivity-temperature-depth measurements from three field campaigns. Research findings delineate a fragmented delta structure with elongated mudflats and select areas of slope instability. Variations from well-mixed water circulation to lateral stratification, govern the slack tide flow transition and sediment transport pathways within seaward and landward passages of the estuary. Fostering a comprehensive understanding of bedrock confined estuary and delta systems has implications for the assessment of coastal management strategies, the productivity of ecological habitats, and the impacts of climate change within coastal areas. / Graduate

Dynamique des matières en suspension minérales des eaux de surface de la Manche observée par satellite et modélisée numériquement / Near surface mineral suspended particulate matter dynamics in the English Channel observed by satellite and numerically modelled

L'étude des matières en suspension (MES) minérales est essentielle pour comprendre le fonctionnement des écosystèmes en Manche : les MES influencent la pénétration de la lumière dans la colonne d'eau, paramètre clé pour la production biologique, et sont susceptibles de transporter des polluants et nutriments. Lors de ce travail, la dynamique des MES minérales de surface en Manche est étudiée à l'aide de deux méthodes complémentaires : l'observation par satellite et la modélisation numérique tridimensionnelle. Dans un premier temps, les images satellite MODIS et MERIS, traitées par l'algorithme semi-analytique développé par l'IFREMER et représentant les MES non-algales de surface, sont analysées afin d'élaborer trois modèles statistiques permettant d'estimer la MES de surface en fonction de variables basiques telles que le coefficient de marée, la hauteur significative des vagues et la concentration moyenne en chlorophylle-a. Dans un deuxième temps, le modèle hydrosédimentaire multiclasse tridimensionnel ROMS (Regional Ocean Modeling System) est implémenté en Manche. Il prend en considération le forçage par la marée aux frontières ouvertes, la contrainte exercée par le vent à la surface de la mer, l'interaction houle-courant en couche limite de fond et l’hétérogénéité spatiale réaliste du lit sédimentaire. Les résultats du modèle statistique le plus sophistiqué sont également utilisés pour forcer la concentration en MES aux frontières ouvertes du domaine de calcul. Des tests de sensibilité sur les conditions limites montrent l'importance de considérer de manière réaliste les sédiments entrant en Manche par les frontières ouvertes lors de la modélisation numérique. L'influence de la biologie sur les MES minérales est testée en utilisant une formulation de la vitesse de chute et de la contrainte critique d'érosion variant saisonnièrement.Grâce à ces deux outils associés, les influences respectives de la marée, de la houle et de la biologie sur les MES minérales sont mises en avant et localisées en Manche. Le modèle numérique prédit que les MES de surface sont composées principalement de silts (>70%). Les silts en suspension en surface proviennent majoritairement du lit sédimentaire près des côtes en Manche orientale et des frontières ouvertes du domaine de calcul à l'ouest de la presqu'île du Cotentin et au large en Manche centrale et orientale. Les variations des MES de surface sont ensuite étudiées aux échelles des cycles de marée semi-diurnes, vive-eau/morte-eau et autour d'un épisode de houles. Enfin, l'évolution de la concentration de sédiments dans la zone de forte turbidité autour de l'île de Wight peut être analysée suivant les conditions hydrodynamiques afin d'évaluer les rôles respectifs des processus locaux d'érosion/dépot et d'advection dans la génération de ces turbidités remarquables. / Study of mineral suspended particulate matter (SPM) is essential to understand ecosystem dynamics. SPM influences light penetration which is closely related to primary production and carries pollutants and nutrients within the water masses. This work aims to study near-surface mineral SPM dynamics in the English Channel using two complementary methods: remote-sensing by satellites and numerical modelling.Firstly, MODIS and MERIS satellite images processed by the IFREMER semi-analytical algorithm and describing non-algal SPM, are analysed to build three statistical models which are able to estimate near-surface SPM using simple variables, e.g., tidal coefficient, significant wave height and mean chlorophyll-a concentration. Secondly, the three-dimensional hydrosedimentary model ROMS (Regional Ocean Modeling System) is applied in the English Channel. It considers tidal forcing along open boundaries, wind stress at the sea-surface, wave-current interactions in the bottom boundary layer and realistic heterogeneous bottom sediments. Results of the more sophisticated statistical model is also used to impose SPM concentrations at open boundaries. Sensitivity tests on SPM boundary conditions show the importance of prescribing realistic sediment concentrations to improve the model predictions. Biological influences on mineral SPM are also tested using settling velocity and critical shear stress for erosion which vary with seasons.Both statistical and numerical models highlight and locate respective influences of tide, waves and biology on mineral SPM. Numerical predictions indicate that near-surface SPM is mainly composed of silts (>70%). Near-surface suspended silts come largely from seabed resuspension alongshore in the Eastern Channel and from the open boundaries of our limited-area coastal model at the West of Cotentin Peninsula and offshore. Near-surface SPM variations are investigated at semi-diurnal, neap-spring tidal cycle time scales and during a wave event. Finally, dynamics of sediments in the turbidity maximum zone around the Isle of Wight is examined depending on hydrodynamical conditions in order to distinguish the role played by advection and local erosion/settling processes in this area.

Este trabalho teve por finalidade simular a hidrodinâmica da Plataforma Continental Interna do Estado de São Paulo (PCISP) e da Plataforma Continental Média do Estado de São Paulo (PCMSP) no período de verão, em resposta às forçantes do gradiente de densidade, do vento climatológico e das marés, através da implementação do modelo numérico hidrodinâmico tridimensional Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS). Os experimentos realizados mostraram que os efeitos da distribuição de densidade sobre o comportamento geral da circulação na PCISP e PCMSP são secundários quando comparados à circulação induzida pela tensão de cisalhamento do vento. Os resultados apontam que na PCISP e na PCMSP a componente de velocidade paralela à costa é dominada por forçantes de frequência subinercial, como o vento climatológico e o gradiente de densidade, enquanto que a componente normal, na direção normal à costa, é fortemente influenciada pela forçante de maré. / The aim of this study was simulate the hydrodynamic of the Inner Continental Shelf of the State of São Paulo (PCISP) and of the Mid Continental Shelf of the State of São Paulo (PCMSP) during summer, in response to the density gradient forcing, to the climatological wind shear stress forcing and to the tide forcing, applying the tridimensional hydrodynamic numeric model Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS). The experiments performed showed the effects of the density distribution over the general circulation behavior in the PCISP and PCMSP are secondary compared with the induced climatological wind shear stress circulation. The results indicate that in the PCISP and in the PCMSP the component velocity parallel to the coast is dominated by subinertial frequencies forcing, as the climatological wind and the density gradient, while the component velocity perpendicular to the coast is strongly influenced by the tide forcing.
