Schmidt, Anders Jensen January 2012 (has links)

The land crab, Ucides cordatus, is a keystone species for the mangrove, has an important socioeconomic role and their stocks have been reduced by mass mortalities. To support the management of this fisheries resource, the aim of the study was produce knowledge about its reproduction and recruitment. The occurrences of the so-called reproductive andadas (= “walk” in Portuguese), were recorded from 2006 to 2011. In 2008 and 2010, the abundance and behaviour of U. cordatus were also monitored. A total of 1441 crabs were observed, 80% exploring burrows. About 90% of exploring crabs were males searching for mates. We recorded 78 crabs climbing on trees and 78% of them were females extruding eggs. We used these movements for the critical assessment of unifying animal movement classifications. We conclude that a nomenclature allowing an unambiguous classification and a coherent grouping of movements across different taxa, according to their ultimate causes is still lacking. We found that andada occurred during the day and night and that the rhythm of mate searching was linked to the “syzygy tide inequality cycle” (STIC). In sync with this cycle, andada shifted between new and full moon, depending upon which moon phase had the higher amplitude tides. The likely ultimate cause of andada is increased larval survival after synchronous release at highest amplitude spring tides one month later. This knowledge will support the establishment of capture bans and reduce conflicts between fishers and regulatory agencies. To study the recruitment, juveniles were sampled monthly from April 2008 to May 2009. Of the 474 recruits found, 96% were associated with burrows of conspecifics, indicating ecological facilitation. Recruitment was higher in intermediate zones of the environmental gradient, with 18.5 cm of estimated flood height, avoiding high predation at the most inundated zone and the physical-chemical stress at the less flooded zone. Sampling in other 6 areas, with different zonation patterns, also showed higher recruitment in intermediate zones of arboreous mangrove near the transition to hinterland. Therefore it was emphasized the importance of conservation and of a proper nomenclature of this transition zone. It is suggested that the transition zone must be defined based on the herbaceous structure of its vegetation rather than measurements of salinity and inundation, which can vary in space and time and therefore be subjective. Knowledge about habitat-specific recruitment could indicate whether stock enhancement actions are really necessary for the recovery of U. cordatus stocks affected by mass mortalities.

Hassan, Maria, Hasan Ibrahim, Rosnani January 2016 (has links)
Today’s technology allows people to interact at a great distance that could not be imagined before. Through the technology, the media such as news channels and social media which allows people to interact as well as read and gather information from all over the world. For example, a person can gather information from the comfort of his own home, without having to experience it himself. The purpose of this paper is to examine how the media coverage affects and alters tourist’s attitudes and views of a tourist destination. The study has limited itself to the Greek Island of Lesvos and how its tourism has been affected by the media reports of the refugee movements. The authors of the study have applied a quantitative research method in the form of structured interviews. Secondary data have also been collected such as; news from social media, scientific articles, statistics, and facts from governmental organizations, in order to have a deeper understanding of the subject that is studied. The results of the structured interview showed that the majority of respondents gained their knowledge of the island Lesvos through media outlets.  Whilst the majority of those who participated expressed that they could not imagine traveling to the island of Lesvos in Greece for pleasure and relaxation. The study survey shows that the media coverage of the refugee tide and the island of Lesvos had a great influence among the respondents. Based on the information from the media outlet, the island was described as a refugee camp and the respondents traveling for relaxation and fun chose to avoid Lesvos as a tourist destination I conclusion; the study indicates that the majority of the Swedish tourists have a negative attitude and view towards Lesvos due to the coverage and information spread by the media. Furthermore, it is important to note that the attitudes and views of the tourists differ from each individual. This is because every individual receives and perceives the information differently, even though it may come from the same source.

Modélisation numérique de la circulation côtière : application au transport des méduses dans les Pertuis Charentais / Numerical modeling of coastal circulation : application to the jellyfish transport in the Pertuis Charentais

Chalumeau, Julien 28 January 2014 (has links)
The Pertuis Charentais are an interconnected ecosystems site where ocean currents play a key role. A high resolution tidal model was developed in this thesis in order to understand the main features of the hydrodynamic flows inside the Pertuis. Two topics were put forward in this study. First, a new tide model for the Pertuis Charentais was build up and validated by using different datasets: tide gauge records, measurements of currents by ADCP and satellite images. A new approach to model calibration was developed by comparing the observed position of the waterline, the boundary between land and water, with that predicted by the model. Secondly, the transport and bloom-like aggregation of the Rhizostoma jellyfish populations were simulated numerically. The jellyfish proliferation and stranding are a source of socio-economic problems. Two types of jellyfish behavior, active and passive were simulated. The tidal currents and typical meteorological forcing were taken into account. The results show that the individual behavior of swimming jellyfish is an adaptive response to abiotic factors for jellyfish survival.

Tidal Cycle Effects on the Occurrence of the Florida Manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) at the Port Everglades Power Plant

Rappucci, Gina 19 October 2009 (has links)
The seasonal distribution of the Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) is influenced predominantly by feeding locations in the summer and proximity to warm-water refuges during colder months. Due to their limited ability to tolerate cold water, when water temperatures drop below 20°C manatees congregate around natural and artificial warm-water refuges, such as warm-water springs or power plant outfalls. Distribution may further be influenced by the tidal cycle through its impact on manatee movement and foraging. Although the importance of tide on manatee distribution and habitat selection has been acknowledged, it has yet to be studied quantitatively in respect to the manatee population in southeast Florida. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the tidal cycle on manatee occurrence at the Florida Power & Light (FPL) Port Everglades Power Plant. Walking surveys were conducted in Port Everglades during manatee season, November 15 – March 31, between 2004 and 2008. During the surveys, the number of manatees in four established locations was noted and the animals categorized based on size as either calf, juvenile, or adult. Water temperature data were also collected at four permanent sample locations. Because many surveys yielded zero manatees observed, data were analyzed using the zero-inflated negative binomial model. Although the manatees at the Port Everglades Power Plant must forage away from the warm-water refuge, my findings show no correlation between tidal state and total manatee occurrence at the FPL Port Everglades Power Plant. The results do, however, suggest that the probability of observing a cow/calf pair is greater during high tide when compared to low and mid-tides (P < 0.05). Total manatee occurrence and the presence of cow/calf pairs were both significantly correlated with water temperature (P < 0.05).

A chemistry-inspired middleware for flexible execution of service based applications / Un middleware inspiré par la chimie pour l'exécution et l'adaptation flexible d'applications basées sur des services

Wang, Chen 28 May 2013 (has links)
With the advent of cloud computing and Software-as-a-Service, Service-Based Application (SBA) represents a new paradigm to build rapid, low-cost, interoperable and evolvable distributed applications. A new application is created by defining a workflow that coordinates a set of third-party Web services accessible over the Internet. In such distributed and loose coupling environment, the execution of SBA requires a high degree of flexibility. For example, suitable constituent services can be selected and integrated at runtime based on their Quality of Service (QoS); furthermore, the composition of service is required to be dynamically modified in response to unexpected runtime failures. In this context, the main objective of this dissertation is to design, to develop and to evaluate a service middleware for flexible execution of SBA by using chemical programming model. Using chemical metaphor, the service-based systems are modeled as distributed, selforganized and self-adaptive biochemical systems. Service discovery, selection, coordination and adaptation are expressed as a series of pervasive chemical reactions in the middleware, which are performed in a distributed, concurrent and autonomous way. Additionally, on the way to build flexible service based systems, we do not restrict our research only in investigating chemical-based solutions. In this context, the second objective of this thesis is to find out generic solutions, such as models and algorithms, to respond to some of the most challenging problems in flexible execution of SBAs. I have proposed a two-phase online prediction approach that is able to accurately make decisions to proactively execute adaptation plan before the failures actually occur.

Ill at ease in our translated world ecocriticism, language, and the natural environment in the fiction of Michael Ondaatje, Amitav Ghosh, David Malouf and Wilma Stockenström

Johnson, Eleanore January 2011 (has links)
This thesis explores the thematic desire to establish an ecological human bond with nature in four contemporary novels: The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje, The Hungry Tide by Amitav Ghosh, An Imaginary Life by David Malouf, and The Expedition to The Baobab Tree by Wilma Stockenström. These authors share a concern with the influence that language has on human perception, and one of the most significant ways they attempt to connect with the natural world is through somehow escaping, or transcending, what they perceive to be the divisive tendencies of language. They all suggest that human perception is not steered entirely by a disembodied mind, which constructs reality through linguistic and cultural lenses, but is equally influenced by physical circumstances and embodied experiences. They explore the potential of corporeal reciprocity and empathy as that which enables understanding across cultural barriers, and a sense of ecologically intertwined kinship with nature. They all struggle to reconcile their awareness of the potential danger of relating to nature exclusively through language, with a desire to speak for the natural world in literature. I have examined whether they succeed in doing so, or whether they contradict their thematic suspicion of language with their literary medium. I have prioritised a close ecocritical reading of the novels and loosely situated the authors’ approach to nature and language within the broad theoretical frameworks of radical ecology, structuralism and poststructuralism. I suggest that these novels are best analysed in the context of an ecocritical mediation between poststructuralist conceptions of nature as inaccessible cultural construct, and the naïve conception of unmediated, pre-reflective interaction with the natural world. I draw especially on the phenomenological theories of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, whose insistence that perception is always both embodied and culturally mediated truly renders culture and nature irreducible, intertwined categories. By challenging historical dualisms like mind/body and culture/nature, the selected novels suggest a more fluid and discursive understanding of the perceived conflict between language and nature, whilst problematizing the perception of language as merely a cultural artefact. Moreover, they are examples of the kind of literature that has the potential to positively influence our human conception of nature, and adapt us better to our ecological context on a planet struggling for survival.

Synthesis of a PbTx-2 photoaffinity and fluorescent probe and an alternative synthetic route to photoaffinity probes

Cassell, Ryan T 29 July 2014 (has links)
A natural phenomenon characterized by dense aggregations of unicellular photosynthetic marine organisms has been termed colloquially as red tides because of the vivid discoloration of the water. The dinoflagellate Karenia brevis is the cause of the Florida red tide bloom. K. brevis produces the brevetoxins, a potent suite of neurotoxins responsible for substantial amounts of marine mammal and fish mortalities. When consumed by humans, the toxin causes Neurotoxic Shellfish Poisoning (NSP). The native function of brevetoxin within the organism has remained mysterious since its discovery. There is a need to identify factors which contribute to and regulate toxin production within K. brevis. These toxins are produced and retained within the cell implicating a significant cellular role for their presence. Localization of brevetoxin and identification of a native receptor may provide insight into its native role as well as other polyether ladder type toxins such as the ciguatoxins, maitotoxins, and yessotoxins. In higher organisms these polyether ladder molecules bind to transmembrane proteins with high affinity. We anticipated the native brevetoxin receptor would also be a transmembrane protein. Photoaffinity labeling has become increasingly popular for identifying ligand receptors. By attaching ligands to these photophors, one is able to activate the molecule after the ligand binds to its receptor to obtain a permanent linkage between the two. Subsequent purification provides the protein with the ligand directly attached. A molecule that is capable of fluorescence is a fluorophore, which upon excitation is capable of re-emitting light. Fluorescent labeling uses fluorophores by attaching them covalently to biologically active compounds. The synthesis of a brevetoxin photoaffinity probe and its application in identifying a native brevetoxin receptor will be described. The preparation of a fluorescent derivative of brevetoxin will be described and its use in localizing the toxin to an organelle within K. brevis. In addition, the general utility of a synthesized photoaffinity label with other toxins having similar functionality will be described. An alternative synthetic approach to a general photoaffinity label will also be discussed whose goal was to accelerate the preparation and improve the overall synthetic yields of a multifunctional label.

A maré terrestre : aspectos teóricos e práticos /

Arana, Daniel. January 2020 (has links)
A hipótese adotada nesta pesquisa é que a consideração do parâmetro temporal junto à análise espectral possibilita isolar a maré terrestre e as sobrecargas. (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: There are Earth tide data from stations across the country that have been in operation in recent years. However, each collection region has one or more predominant geophysical effects, causing a heterogeneity of data and opening the possibility for several studies. The minimization of geophysical effects in gravimetric observations is a major challenge in the generation of terrestrial tide models. Thus, this research aims to study the methodologies for correcting atmospheric and ocean loading in different scenarios. The hypothesis adopted in this research is that the consideration of the temporal parameter together with the spectral analysis makes it possible to isolate the terrestrial tide and the overloads. The methodology in this work involves three stages: (1) the pre-processing, (2) the processing of the gravimetric observations and (3) the application of the tidal models. The study stations are PPTE and NEIA, located respectively in the cities of Presidente Prudente - SP and Cananeia - SP, chosen due to the different behavior of ocean loading in the two regions. The research is based on the decomposition by spherical harmonics and the use of wavelets in the gravimetric time series of the two stations. The pre-processing of the data was meticulously carried out, highlighting the detection of a temporal displacement in part of the PPTE gravimetric data, which were successfully corrected. In the processing stage, the impacts of atmospheric and oceanic corrections were anal... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

Tides, Rossby and Kelvin waves simulated with the COMMA-LIM Model

Fröhlich, Kristina, Pogoreltsev, Alexander, Jacobi, Christoph 18 January 2017 (has links)
A 48-layer version of the COMMA-LIM (Cologne Model of the Middle Atmosphere – Leipzig Institute for Meteorology) three-dimensional global mechanistic model of the Earth\''s atmosphere from 0 km to 135 km with logarithmic pressure height coordinates was developed. The model is capable of reproducing the global structures and propagation of different planetary waves in the middle atmosphere. The contribution of gravity waves, tides, Rossby and Kelvin waves into the zonally averaged momentum budget of the mesosphere / lower thermosphere region has been investigated.

Novotny, Kristin 05 April 2007 (has links)
The determination of sea level variations is a major topic of present geodetic research. The mean sea surface is a geometric boundary surface to describe the figure of the Earth. Its secular change has, for instance, to be considered in future coastal protection projects. However, the estimation of reliable values for these parameters from the relatively short altimeter observation time series is hampered by long- and short-term sea level variations. For the Baltic Sea, a processing scheme was developed that uses sea surface elevations taken from a high-resolution oceanographic model of the Baltic Sea to reduce these sea level variations in the observations. Thus, the standard deviation of the observed sea level heights was reduced from original values of about 15 to 25cm to final values of less than 10cm. A comparison of the modelled and the observed sea level variations was performed before the model was employed. From this, the accuracy of the modelled sea surface elevations was found to be in the order of 5 to 15cm. Moreover, the oceanographic model could be improved by the assimilation of tide gauge observations. The combination of the observations of different satellite altimeters requires also the homogenisation of the time series and the examination of their temporal stability. The comparison with tide gauge observations at the southern coast of the Baltic Sea allowed the determination of the absolute bias of each altimeter mission. Relative bias values were estimated by comparison of altimetric heights of different missions within the entire Baltic Sea. Finally, the time series of the corrected and reduced altimetric sea level heights formed the basis on which the mean sea surface of the Baltic Sea and its secular change were determined. The linear rate of the sea level rise in the Baltic Sea with respect to the geoid was estimated to (+1,2+-0,8)mm/year. This absolute rate was then combined with the relative sea level change observed at coastal tide gauges, allowing the estimation of the rates of the postglacial rebound in the vicinity of the gauges. The mean sea surface topography in the open Baltic was determined with an accuracy of about 3 to 10cm. A regional geoid model served as the reference surface. The presented procedure shows the potential of combining geodetic observations with the results of a precise model of the observed parameter. It can be regarded as a regional study that can be applied also to other regions where observational and modelled data are available.
