The Project “Animated Physics” is a proposal that uses the stop motion animation technique to teach concepts of kinematics in an active and fun way for high school students. This technique consists on the creation of motion frame by frame and there are several well-known animated movies as examples of its application. In this work, three steps were proposed for the project implementation: (i) Creation of characters in putty; (ii) Recording videos with constant and variable speed motion; (iii) Analysis of movements in the video to confront the mental model with Newtonian mechanics models. The research was conducted in a public school focused on youth and adult education (CEJA in Portuguese, Education Center for Youth and Adults) and during the year 2014 a short course was applied several times to different students. The project was performed through two free softwares: MUAN, for the creation of videos, and Tracker, for kinematic analysis. Both have an intuitive and friendly interface, which allows the use as a teaching tool. During the implementation of the project, diagnostic tests were performed with students before and after a short course of four lessons. In addition, questionnaires were applied to all participants and interviews were conducted with those who volunteered to record their impressions on the activity. The aim of this project was to make students understand concepts of displacement, position, speed and acceleration, to develop graphics, tables, and vector interpretation skills, and also to relate kinematics graphics with motion. The validity of the project in order to increase the interest and motivation of students learning topics in kinematics and mechanics was also assessed.

Contribution à la modélisation et au contrôle de trajectoire de Trackers photovoltaïques à haute concentration (HCPV) / Contribution to the modeling and control of high concentrated Photovoltaic tracker (hcpv)

Sahnoun, Mohamed Aymen 18 December 2015 (has links)
This work focuses on improving the accuracy and on reducing the cost of the tracker generating trajectory strategy, in order to maximize the production and to reduce the installation and the maintenance cost of a solar tracker orienting high concentrated photovoltaic modules (HCPV). Initially, we propose a behavioral modeling of the HCPV module mounted on a dual axis tracker in order to study the influence of the tracking performance on the module power production. Then, this simulator can be used to test control strategies and to compare their performance. Firstly, a classical control strategy is implemented in the simulator. It is based on a hybrid control operating an astronomical calculation to follow the sun path, and a sun sensor to correct the tracking error. A sensorless strategy is proposed in this work to reduce the cost of the HCPV tracker control. This strategy is based on a gradient optimization algorithm to generate the tracker trajectory and to catch the sun path. Tested on the simulator, this strategy presents the same accuracy as the classical strategy while being less costly. The last study proposed in this thesis work concerns maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms, in order to respond to a given problem relating to the practical implementation of gradient algorithm. In this context, we propose an original optimization of the P&O MPPT control with a neural network algorithm leading to a significant reduction of the computational cost required to train it. This approach, which is ensuring a good compromise between accuracy and complexity is sufficiently fast to not affect the quality of the evaluation of the gradient.

Optimization of Aircraft Tracker Parameters / Optimization of Aircraft Tracker Parameters

Samek, Michal January 2015 (has links)

See if your dog has been a Good Boy through glanceable feedback : A design research to implement glancable feedback in activity trackers for dogs

Klaar, Sandra, Klasson, Malin January 2021 (has links)
Resultatet är aktivitetsenheten Good Boy. / The purpose of this study is to investigate how glanceable feedback can be implemented in activity units for dogs to create a better user experience and reduce the technological disruption in human-dog communication. Previous studies show that the development of activity units for dogs is far from as successful as activity units for humans (Ramokapane, van der Linden & Zamansky, 2019; Väätäjä et al. 2018; Zamansky et al. 2019). Väätäjä, et al. (2018) have pointed out the importance of the technology behind the activity, such as the mobile phone, unit not coming between the dog owner and the dog. It must not act as a disturbance that distances communication or interaction between dog and human (Väätäjä et al. 2018). This is inevitable in today's activity units for dogs as the user is completely dependent on the mobile phone's associated application (Väätäjä et al. 2018).  The question (How can glanceable feedback be applied in an activity unit for dogs to give the dog owner direct information on the dog's activity?) Investigates how glanceable feedback can be applied in activity units for dogs and avoid that communication between dog and owner is disturbed by technology. The result is the Good Boy activity unit. The unit is equipped with a display and a mechanical wheel that switches between the different categories distance / step, pulse / body temperature, info /contact information and LED/lamp.

Usability challenges of upgrading a word processor user interface

Moeti, L., De Wet, L., Beelders, T. January 2010 (has links)
Published Article / This study evaluated the difficulty, in terms of usability, of upgrading from one version of a word processor user interface (Microsoft Word 2003) to another (2007). Laboratory-based usability testing involving 23 participants, who had never used Microsoft Word 2007 before, was conducted. All participants used the two versions in a repeated-measures experimental design. A Tobii 1750 Eye Tracker was used for screen recordings during testing. Participants were also required to fill in user satisfaction questionnaires. Results from the usability test showed that, in terms of usability, migrating from an original interface to a completely changed user interface is not easy.

Kjellsson, Lisa, Magnusson, Charlotte January 2016 (has links)

Electro-Optic Hybrid Rotary Joint (EOHRJ)

Xu, Guoda, Bartha, John, Zhang, Sean, Qiu, Wei, Lin, Freddie, McNamee, Stuart, Rheaume, Larry 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 23-26, 2000 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California / An advanced electro-optic hybrid rotary joint (EOHRJ) has been developed in Phase II of an AF SBIR effort with Physical Optics Corporation (POC) to replace cable wrap structure for multi-channel rotation-to-fixed (RTF) signal transmission. The EOHRJ meets AFFTC and other range special needs with a generic, high performance, rotary joint solution. At the moment, we have successfully installed and tested the EOHRJ on our KTM tracker system with the following capabilities: 1) able to accommodate hundreds of transmission channels, including electrical power, control, feedback, and low-speed signals; 2) able to accommodate multiple channel, high data rate (over gigabits per second), and bi-directional signal transmission; 3) able to be reliable for harsh environmental operation, adaptive to stringent sized requirement, and accommodating existing electrical and mechanical interfaces. The completed EOHRJ contains three uniquely integrated functional rings. The first and the outmost one is power ring, which provides RTF transmission channels for over 50 high voltage and high current channels. The second and the middle one is low speed electrical signal ring, which provides RTF transmission for over hundred control, feedback, and low speed data signals. The third and the inmost one is optical fiber slip ring, which, incorporating with current advanced signal multiplexing technologies (either time division or wavelength division multiplexing ) is able to provide multiple channel, high data rate, and bi-directional signal transmission. At the moment, the prototype module of the tree-layer EOHRJ has been successfully assembled in Air Force’s tracker system, and is providing a satisfactory performance. This paper presents our joint work on this project.

Track quality monitoring for the compact muon solenoid silicon strip tracker

Goitom, Israel January 2009 (has links)
The CMS Tracker is an all silicon detector and it is the biggest of its kind to be built. The system consists of over 15,000 individual detector modules giving rise to readout through almost 107 channels. The data generated by the Tracker system is close to 650 MB at 40 MHz. This has created a challenge for the CMS collaborators in terms of data storage for analysis. To store only the interesting physics data the readout rate has to be reduced to 100 Hz where the data has to be ltered through a monitoring system for quality checks. The Tracker being the closest part of the detector to the interaction point of the CMS creates yet another challenge that needs the data quality monitoring system. As it operates in a very hostile environment the silicon detectors used to detect the particles will be degraded. It is very important to monitor the changes in the sensor behaviour with time so that to calibrate the sensors to compensate for the erroneous readings. This thesis discusses the development of a monitoring system that will enable the checking of data generated by the tracker to address the issues discussed above. The system has two parts, one dealing with the data used to monitor the Tracker and a second one that deals with statistical methods used to check the quality of the data.

PySciDON: a Python scientific framework for development of ocean network applications

Vandenberg, Nathan 04 January 2017 (has links)
The Salish Sea is a ecologically important coastal region located on the southwest part of British Columbia. Optical measurements were taken using a set of hyperspectral radiometers, the SAS Solar Tracker developed by Satlantic. This sensor is installed on the Queen of Oak Bay ferry, that runs between Nanaimo and Vancouver, as part of the Ferry Ocean Colour Observation Systems (FOCOS) project. We developed a computer program to process the raw sensor data and generate remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) values. This performs similar functions to Prosoft, Satlantic’s own software to process the data. However, we added new features such as an additional preprocessing step to filter the data based on longitude, and new meteorological flag testing and wind speed calculations. The system was tested using Pearson correlation to compare our output with the output from Satlantic Prosoft. Testing helped us identify a few issues, such as adding longitude flags to remove data at the start and end of the trip where the sensor could produce inaccurate results if aiming at land instead of water. Another issue was where the SAS Solar Tracker does not update its pointing angle fast enough when the ferry makes sharp turns and could result in inaccurate data. / Graduate
