Flinders Street Station in Melbourne, Australia currently serves a dual purpose, providing both a transient space that links the city to its suburban roots and creating a physical barrier between the city and its watercourse. Ultimately, the existing station denies Melbourne the fulfillment of its need for centrality. Historically, the Yarra River was a source of life and sacred feature of the Australian Aboriginal landscape. A renewed interest in the riverfront as the new focus for Melbourne, an emerging global city, has turned the area into an urban destination following years of neglect. Flinders Station stands at the new centre of Melbourne on the North Banks of the Yarra River. The geographical isolation and entrenched suburban nature of Melbourne has led to the celebration of train travel as a cultural phenomenon. Twice daily Flinders Station filters Melbourne's commuters en route between the city and suburbia. The integration of a new public space as a commuter thoroughfare into the existing rail station introduces a transitory space between the disconnected urban/suburban landscapes of the commuter experience. The train station is seen as a fascinating place of cultural significance where the world of fast movement is intermittently juxtaposed with that of dwelling and leisure. This thesis redesigns Flinders Street Station, filtering travelers through a new public landscape to activate the connection between city, river, and suburbia while heightening the sense of urban arrival and departure.

Air Pollution Distribution under an Elevated Train Station (A Case Study of Silom Station in Downtown Bangkok)Charusombat, Umarporn 01 January 1999 (has links)
To solve traffic congestion in Bangkok, the Bangkok Mass Transit system (BTS) constructed an overhead rail system with 24 stations. The BTS train station, S2, in this study area covers Silom road and obstructs the air pollutant dispersion in a congestion area. The 1: 200 physical model of the buildings along Silom road with the train station, S2, was simulated in this research to determine the air pollutant dispersion in the train station area. A tracer gas (CO₂) was emitted from a simulated line source with emission rates of 0.383, 0.681, 1.293, 2.586, 5.177 and 10.77 mg/min to simulate actual pollutant emission rates. The CO₂ gas was sampled at 55 locations in the model. The Kriging method was used to interpolate the data in the study area. . Emission rates were used to make the difference between measured CO₂ in the model area and ambient CO₂ large enough to be differentiated. Regression Analysis was used to relate analytically the mass emission rate to the CO₂ concentration. The results indicate that the maximum CO concentrations exceed the 30 ppm Bangkok standard along the Southeast side of Silom Road at the passenger platform level. Drivers will acquire more harmful levels of CO than pedestrians at street level, especially near the Southwest end of the train station. NO₂ concentrations do not exceed the standard (0.17 ppm) at street level. The highest predicted VOC is 1.05 ppm. These results may be used in the future for numerical modeling study. / Master of Science

These, along with the theoryfor the design of train stations, were the basisfor the design program.The compiled touristic aspects cover the areasof design, information, culture, art,functionality, and social aspects and aredesigned to be applicable to all small-scalestations linked to tourism. The design programis divided into three parts: the station area,the station building and the platform. All threeareas have been renovated and adapted to bemore accessible and functional based onexisting guidelines and to meet the touristicaspects developed.The design program embodies the practicalapplication of the touristic aspects and theexisting guidelines for functionality,accessibility, and design. The thesis is about the programmatic exchange and confluence between production processes, public transportation and people. The proposed intervention would be developed to fit in with the City of Tshwane Spatial development framework and an industracity vision and framework for the location in Pretoria West, developed by the framework group. The new intervention will deal with both production process and public activity in the design of a train station and intermodal freight warehouse. The site location is in Pretoria West, a mixed use suburb with restricted industry, business, retail, flats and single residential areas. The site is the Pretoria West Power Station an intersect fir existing infrastructure and public transportation routes. The aim of the investigation is the integration of public functions with industrial functions in ways that contest monotonous urban environments, preserving the heritage of the site in the outcome. The research questions what can be done to facilitate the return of lost production, increase the interaction of people and processes and address the decaying historical fabric of the Pretoria West Power Station. The study examines the history of production and railway stations, uses descriptive survey methods, precedent studies and architectural and urban theory to inform the intervention. The aim of the design is to transform an industrial site into a vibrant integrated environment, introducing programmes that will attract people , but keep the industrial character intact. The character of the site will be conserved through the introduction of new light industries, keeping the memory of process. The design concept links into the idea of electrical input and output exchanges of a power station. It focuses on the exchanges of energy, physical and visual exchanges between heritage, people and products, service exchanges and exchanges in function between freight and passengers and in context - heritage and production. The design objectives are to extend the railway line as a suspended platform to provide access and exchange for freight and passengers and to depart from the introverted nature of the existing buildings to encourage public interaction with the history of the site and the production processes.
