This study, which is focused on addressing the rising prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in South Asians begins from the perspective that the development of diabetes has scope across public health and anthropology. The onset and progression are rooted within social determinants of health and cultural practices. Similarly, pregnancy—which is a crucial component of the life course—is a time where not only nutrients are shared between mother and child, but also when knowledge is exchanged, and cultural ways are imparted to the pregnant person from their friends and family. Within the South Asian community of Southern Ontario, recent public health evidence demonstrates a high rate of GDM where 1 in 3 South Asians will develop the condition. Babies born to GDM mothers are of higher birthweight and percent body fat than those of non-GDM mothers. Interventions to prevent GDM are important because GDM itself is a risk factor for postpartum obesity, diabetes, and atherosclerosis in the mother, and also because infants with more adipose tissue are more likely to become insulin resistant in adolescence and develop diabetes and cardiovascular disease as adults. Discussions to strengthen the public health response to this challenge can incorporate evidence-based counselling tools (e.g., easily scalable knowledge translation (KT) tools) that can be used by prenatal clinicians providing primary care. Given that diet and physical activity can be influenced not only by an individual locus of control, but also by familial interactions/networks and cultural/traditional foods and expectations, there is a need to better understand and weave in these experiences. I sought to better understand 1) the prenatal lifestyle counselling experiences of South Asians and their family doctors; and 2) the KT tools that have been designed and used in this population; then I used these learnings to develop and evaluate a conceptually-informed, evidence-based KT tool for pregnant South Asians and their family physicians. This dissertation begins with an introduction of patient and provider experiences with lifestyle change. I then present a systematic review and narrative synthesis of prenatal KT tools designed for South Asians. This is followed by a case report that outlines the process taken to develop a patient-facing and provider-facing KT tool (‘SMART START’). Next, I include the design and evaluation of a mixed methods pilot evaluation study of ‘SMART START.’ Finally, I culminate with an epilogue that ties in lessons learned and challenges that were overcome throughout the conduct of this work. Neste trabalho, apresentamos uma tradução comentada, do francês para o português, de parte de uma obra clássica de importância científica. O autor escolhido foi o médico e cientista francês Claude Bernard, que, entre os anos de 1843 e 1879, publicou dezenas de livros sobre sua prática como professor de Fisiologia no Collège de France, em Paris. Dentre eles, o escolhido para este trabalho foi Introduction à létude de la médecine expérimentale (1865), após análise de um grande número de obras desse autor e contando com a consultoria de especialistas nas áreas de Filosofia e de História da Ciência. O livro que nos serve de corpus é composto por uma Introdução, seguida de três partes: Do raciocínio experimental, A experimentação nos seres vivos e Aplicações do método experimental no estudo dos fenômenos da vida. A proposta de trabalho inclui a tradução da Introdução e da Primeira Parte do livro, trazendo uma série de notas de diferentes tipos, relacionadas tanto ao conteúdo científico quanto a questões de tradução propriamente ditas. A nossa opção de tradução na elaboração dessa proposta foi a de levar o leitor ao encontro do texto original, isto é, em direção ao autor, o que consiste em um procedimento de tradução denominado estrangeirizante (Venuti, 1995), que privilegia o estilo de escrita desse autor, a terminologia por ele utilizada e enfatiza as questões científicas do século XIX por ele abordadas, da maneira como as mesmas se inseriam no contexto da época, em relação ao século XXI. / In this study, we present a translation with commentary (or annotated translation), from French to Portuguese, covering a section of a classic work of scientific importance. The author chosen was the French physician and scientist Claude Bernard, who published dozens of books about his practice as a professor of physiology at the College de France in Paris between 1843 and 1879. Upon consideration of a large number of works by this author and with the experts` advice in the fields of Philosophy and History of Science, the book chosen for this work was Introduction à l\'étude de la médecine expérimentale (1865). The book that is our corpus consists of an Introduction, followed by three parts: The Experimental Reasoning; Experimentation in Living Beings; Applications of the Experimental Method in the Study of the Phenomena of Life. The proposed work includes the translation of the Introduction and First Part of the book, adding several notes of different types, related both to scientific content and to translation issues. Our choice of translation for the development of this proposal was to take the reader into the original text or to its author, consisting of a translation procedure denominated foreignizing (Venuti, 1995). Therefore, we focused on the author`s writing style and terminology, emphasizing the scientific issues in the context of the nineteenth century, compared to the twenty-first century.

Vom 02. bis 04. Februar 2017 wurde vom Institut für Slavistik der TU Dresden eine internationale Konferenz mit dem Titel Linguistik als diskursive Schnittstelle zwischen Recht, Politik und Konflikt ausgerichtet, die durch die Graduiertenakademie der TU Dresden aus Mitteln der Exzellenzinitiative des Bundes und der Länder gefördert wurde. Der thematische Schwerpunkt richtete sich auf differenzierte Analysen, die im Spannungsfeld zwischen juristischer Terminologie, Herausforderungen der Translationswissenschaft sowie der Konfliktlinguistik angesiedelt sind. Die Dresdner Organisatoren begrüßten anlässlich der Tagung Gäste aus Deutschland, Italien, Rumänien, Russland, Slowenien, Tschechien und aus der Ukraine, die die Ergebnisse aktueller Forschungsprojekte und themenbezogener Studien vorstellten.

Denna uppsats består av en längre översättning av förordet samt de tre första kapitlen ur den populärvetenskapliga boken The Forger’s Spell (2009) från engelska till svenska. Till det följer ett avsnitt med kommentarer på översättningsproblem som uppstod under processen. Syftet med denna uppsats är att etablera en lämplig översättningsprincip sett till faktorer som textens genre, position i polysystemet och stilistiska drag samt att skapa en målspråksanpassad översättning. Det översättningsteoretiska ramverket består av Even-Zohars (2012) polysystemteori, där översatt sakprosa befinner sig på en sekundär position i det svenska litterära systemet, vilket pekar mot en målspråksinriktad översättning. Vidare bygger det också på Nidas (2012) dynamiska ekvivalensteori, vars mål är att skapa en ekvivalent läsupplevelse för målspråksläsaren. Ramverket, tillsammans med en analys av källtexten låg till grund för översättningsprincipen som var att skapa en målspråksinriktad översättning. Något som framkom i processen var det faktum att denna översättning innebar en överföring mellan tre kulturer och några intressanta problem uppstod relaterat till detta. Syftet med uppsatsen uppfylldes, en teoretiskt förankrad princip etablerades och en översättning utformades nära utefter den, vilket resulterade i en målspråksanpassad, dynamiskt ekvivalent översättning. / This essay contains a longer translation of an excerpt from English to Swedish of the popular science book The Forger’s Spell by Edward Dolnick, with comments on translation issues that surfaced during the process. The purpose of the essay was to establish a translation principle, suitable for the book’s genre, position within the polysystem, stylistic features as well as creating a target language-oriented translation. The theoretical framework for the essay consisted of Even-Zohar’s polysystem theory, by which translated non-fictional prose has a secondary position within the Swedish literary system. This points to it being translated in a target language-oriented manner. It also builds upon Nida’s dynamic equivalence, by which the goal is to create an equivalent reading experience for the target language reader as the source language reader had. This framework, combined with a textual analysis performed on the source text laid the foundation of the translation principle, which was to create a target language-oriented translation. The fact this translation meant a transmission of three different cultures emerged during this process, and some interesting problems related to this needed solving. The purpose of the essay was fulfilled, a theoretically grounded translation principle was established, and a translation was produced closely from it which resulted in a target language oriented, dynamically equivalent translation.
