Previous issue date: 2013-06-07 / This study is about translation procedures in A Midsummer Night´s Dream by William
Shakespeare on its five translations published in Brazil by Carlos Alberto Nunes
(1955), F. C. Medeiros Mendes and Oscar (1969); Beatriz Viégas-Faria (2001);
Heliodora Barbara (2004) and Erick Ramalho (2006). Our intention here is also
verifying in these translations, comparing to the source text, speeches that report the
development of the women‟s profile in Shakespearean work in analysis. From the
assumption that each translator has his own characteristics and style, we have
checked in this study the translation strategies which had been chosen and used by
each author in their translation process. We know that each translation was produced
in different social and historical contexts, however, for a greater comprehension of its
specificities, this study had as a theoretical basis, the methodological model of
Lambert and van Gorp (1985), thereby, justifying with greater accuracy and efficiency
the choices of each author‟s translation procedures. This analysis had been
developed in three stages: (i) identifying fragments that address the woman‟s profile
in Shakespeare work, (ii) checking fragments (in the target texts) of each possible
statement or word, previously highlighted, about woman‟s profile, (iii) analyze the
translation procedures observed before, and the general effects they may cause in
different translations, in order to analyze how the translations may maintain,
attenuate, intensify or omit, among other things, discursive aspects about the
construction of the female profile once verified on the source text. Therefore, this
study followed the scheme of strategies developed by MárciaParedesNunes (2007),
it consists of translation strategies relevant for this research. Our theoretical
referential is based on the Descriptive Translation Studies, about theories and
approaches from authors such as Even-Zohar (1990), Toury (1980, 1995, 1998),
Lefevere (1990) and Venuti (2002). We have noticed that all translators have tried to
be as faithful as possible and keep in their translations the original proposal, always
looking for equivalent terms between the source text and the target text, and worrying
about the lexicon, the semantic and with the linguistic varieties present in the
Shakespearean text, they also (re)create the play‟s scenic aspects. Whereas, the
translation studies are still recent in Brazil, this research does not stop here. New
studies will come contributing to the increase and diffusion of this new field of
scientific and academic research. / Esta pesquisa versa sobre procedimentos tradutórios em Sonho de Uma Noite de
Verão de William Shakespeare em cinco traduções publicadas no Brasil, por Carlos
Alberto Nunes (1955); F. C. Medeiros e Oscar Mendes (1969); Beatriz Viégas-Faria
(2001); Barbara Heliodora (2004) e Erick Ramalho (2006). Pretende-se aqui,
também, verificar nessas traduções, comparando-se ao texto original as implicações
de discursos que marcam a construção do perfil da mulher na obra shakespeariana
em análise. Partindo do pressuposto de que cada tradutor possui suas
particularidades e estilo próprio, ocupamo-nos das estratégias de tradução
escolhidas por cada um deles. Como cada trabalho se deu em contexto históricosocial
distinto, adotamos, para melhor compreensão das especificidades, como base
teórica neste estudo, o modelo metodológico de Lambert e van Gorp (1985) para,
desse modo, acessarmos, com maior rigor e eficácia, a escolha dos procedimentos
tradutórios de cada autor. Este estudo apresenta-se em três etapas: (i) identificação
de fragmentos que retratam o perfil da mulher na obra de Shakespeare; (ii)
localização das traduções (nos textos-alvo), de cada possível afirmação ou palavra
sobre a mulher, previamente destacadas nos fragmentos e, (iii) análise dos
procedimentos tradutórios observados e os efeitos gerais que estes provocam nas
diferentes traduções, a fim de verificar em que medida as versões mantêm,
atenuam, intensificam ou omitem os aspectos discursivos relacionados à construção
do perfil feminino antes percebido no original. Para tanto, nos apoiamos no esquema
de estratégias elaborado por Márcia Paredes Nunes (2007), constituído por
estratégias tradutórias relevantes para esta pesquisa. Nosso referencial teórico
funda-se nos Estudos Descritivos da Tradução, com base nas teorias e abordagens
de autores como Even-Zohar (1990), Toury (1980, 1995, 1998), Lefevere (1990) e
Venuti (2002). Observamos que ambos os tradutores buscaram da maneira mais
precisa possível serem fiéis e conservar em suas traduções a proposta do original,
buscando sempre termos equivalentes entre o texto-fonte e o texto-meta,
preocupando-se com o léxico, com o semântico e com as variedades linguísticas
presentes no texto shakespeariano, além de (re)criarem os aspectos cênicos da
peça.Considerando que os estudos da tradução ainda são recentes, no Brasil, esta
pesquisa não para por aqui. Novos estudos virão no intuito de contribuir com a
ampliação e difusão deste novo campo de investigação cientifica-acadêmico.

A proposta desta pesquisa consiste em um trabalho de Linguística Aplicada que proporcione uma reflexão empírica sobre o fazer tradutório, em especial no que tange ao tratamento dado aos marcadores culturais linguisticamente expressos no texto original. A análise será desenvolvida a partir do cotejo do conto The Gold Bug do escritor Edgar Allan Poe no original em inglês com três traduções do texto original para o português brasileiro. O cotejo será executado aplicando-se a ferramenta de descrição das modalidades de tradução (Aubert 1998, 2006a, derivados dos procedées techniques de la traduction, de Vinay & Darbelnet (1958), como forma de identificar questões culturais e linguísticas, discutindo as soluções adotadas por cada um dos tradutores para trechos culturalmente marcados e dificuldades léxico-gramaticais. Pretende-se, assim, compreender as relações de equivalência entre as línguas, bem como suas diferenças e convergências culturais. Com tal intuito, serão invocados os Estudos Tradutológicos com auxílio da Linguística, bem como o auxílio pontual da Literatura Comparada e da Antropologia (Estudos Interculturais). Como resultado final, espera-se que o mapeamento das soluções tradutórias faculte generalizações sobre os métodos de tradução adotados. / This investigation is proposed as a piece of Applied Linguistics offering an empirical review of the translation process, particularly in what concerns the treatment of cultural markers as linguistically expressed in the source text. Our analysis will be conducted based on a comparison between the short story The Gold Bug by Edgar Allan Poe in its original English version with three different translations of the original text published in Brazilian Portuguese. The comparison shall be carried out using as a descriptive tool the translation modalities (Aubert 1998, 2006a, as derived from Vinay & Darbelnets procedées techniques de la traduction (1958), so as to identify the cultural and linguistic issues involved, discussing the solutions offered by each translator for the culturally marked passages and for the lexicalgrammatical difficulties encountered. In this fashion, we expect to shed light on the equivalence relationships between the languages, as well as on the cultural differences and convergences. With this purpose in mind, we will fundamentally resort to Translations Studies with assistance of Linguistics, and with the accurate assistance of Comparative Literature and Anthropology (or Intercultural Studies). As a final result, we expect that the survey of the translation solutions will enable generalizations on the translation methods employed.

Comparaison semi-automatique des traductions en langue française de l’Odyssée d’Homère (1547-1955) / Semi-automatic comparison of French translations of Homer’s Odyssey (1547-1955)Reboul, Marianne 05 October 2017 (has links)
Cette étude explore l’ensemble des traductions de l’Odyssée d’Homère en langue française depuis la Renaissance jusqu’à nos jours. Elle participe à la constitution d’une histoire des traductions à partir du nouvel outillage technique et conceptuel offert par le numérique, qui permet d’envisager à nouveaux frais l’histoire des traductions d’un texte fondateur de la civilisation occidentale. Notre hypothèse, selon laquelle le tournant dans la manière de traduire Homère s’effectue entre la fin du XVIIIe siècle et le début du XIXe siècle en France, avec les progrès de l’archéologie et de la philologie, a pu être vérifiée tout au long de cette étude, grâce au programme que nous avons construit. Cette étude a donc pu retracer à la fois l’histoire des traductions de l’Odyssée et se rattacher à l’histoire plus large qu’est l’histoire des traductions. Notre étude a aussi pour but de rendre accessibles à tous les résultats que nous avons obtenus. Nous avons numérisé et rassemblé toutes les traductions de l’Odyssée en langue française dans un format XML enrichi. Nous avons traité 26 traductions de l’Odyssée, dont 23 sont intégrales. Hormis les textes sous droits, tous les textes sont en libre accès sous cette forme. L’outil numérique que nous avons créé de toutes pièces n’est pas seulement un instrument destiné à faciliter le travail du chercheur : il permet de trouver des phénomènes qui sont indécelables à l’œil nu, et d’obtenir des résultats qui ne peuvent pas, même avec la plus grande rigueur, être obtenus par un humain. Nous voyons ainsi la double fonction de l’outil informatique, qui sert à la fois d’outil de vérification et de découverte. D’une part, l’outil informatique permet de rendre vérifiable les intuitions de la philologie qui sont opérationnalisées et parfois visualisables de manière pédagogique. D’autre part, des phénomènes inattendus peuvent être rendus visibles par les expériences, comme des inflexions que la longue durée ou la quantité de textes auraient masquées. / This study goes through the whole of the French translations of Homer’s Odyssey from the Renaissance up to the XXth century. It is a further step in the study of the history of translations, based on a new technical and conceptual tool, using a wide range of new techniques in the field of Digital Humanities, which should help us enhance research about such a major text in Western civilization. Our hypothesis is to locate the turning point in the ways to translate Homer at the end of the XVIIIth century in France, with progress made in archeology and philology, a hypothesis that has been verified throughout this study, thanks to the software we made. We have studied both the history of the translations of the Odyssey and a wider history, that is to say, history of translations in general. Our study also aimed at giving access to the wider public to the results we got. We digitized and gathered all the French translations of the Odyssey in an enriched XML format. We have dealt with 26 translations, within which 23 are complete. Except for copyrighted texts, all our texts are open source. The digital tool we made does not only exist to ease the scientific work, but it also allows us to see new phenomena that would be impossible to spot with a human eye, and obtain results that cannot, even with rigorous expertise, be obtained by a human. We see there the double function of a digital tool that can both confirm and help discover. Firstly, the tool can allow us to confirm philological intuitions that can be operationalized and visualized in pedagogical way. On the other hand, unexpected phenomena can be found and visualized, such as changes that might have been hidden due to the wide period studied or the quantity of texts analyzed.

Comment définir un professionnel de la traduction et de l’interprétation judiciaire ? Aujourd’hui le métier de traducteur et d’interprète judiciaire en France et en Espagne est en voie de professionnalisation. Les structures professionnelles – formation, associations, régulation de l’État – contribuent à cette transformation de même que les attitudes favorables à la professionnalisation des praticiens, autrement dit le professionnalisme. Nous avons constaté que les travaux en traductologie n’ont pas développé la notion de professionnalisme et ont accordé une place centrale à la formation, laissant souvent de côté les aspects attitudinaux. Par ailleurs, la formation se révèle comme un critère de différenciation des traducteurs et interprètes, distinguant ceux qui sont diplômés en traduction – qualifiés de « professionnels » – de ceux qui ont acquis des compétences en traduction par la pratique – qualifiés de « natifs » (« naturels » ou « non-professionnels »). Cette thèse interroge cette dernière distinction et propose un modèle pour l’étude du professionnalisme centré sur cinq dimensions : l’idéal de service, l’intérêt pour les associations professionnelles et pour la qualité-efficacité dans la réalisation des tâches, les souhaits d’amélioration des conditions de travail et enfin les références en principes éthiques. Par le recours à ce modèle, notre travail explore les différences de professionnalisme entre traducteurs et interprètes judiciaires « natifs » et « professionnels » travaillant en France et en Espagne à partir d’entretiens biographiques. Les résultats avancent que l’interaction entre les acteurs interviewés et les structures professionnelles autres que la formation, détermine la définition du professionnalisme et du professionnel de la traduction. / What defines a professional on the field of legal translation and court interpretation? Nowadays, France and Spain are in the process of professionalizing this field. Even now, professional structures like a formal education, organizations and state regulations are contributing to this transformation, as well as demonstrating a favorable attitude towards the professionalization from its practitioners. In other words, professionalism. We have noticed that translation studies do not have a notion of professionalism, but keep a central role in formal education, which in effect neglects its attitudinal aspects. Furthermore, a formal education becomes the differentiation between translators and interpreters, distinguishing those who are certified in translation (qualified as “professionals”) from those who have acquired their translation skills through practice (qualified as “natives”, “naturals” or “non-professionals”). This thesis draws into question the above differentiation and proposes a model that studies professionalism focused on five aspects: the ideals of service, the interest for professional associations and quality-efficiency in task completion, the desire to improve working conditions and finally the standards in ethical principles. Through the use of this model, we performed biographical interviews to explore the differences in professionalism between “natives” and “professional” legal translators and court interpreters who work in France and Spain. The results indicate that, the interaction between the interviewees and the professional structures, other than a formal education, determines the definition of professionalism and of a translation professional.

Orientador: Diva Cardoso de Camargo / Banca: Lídia Almeida Barros / Banca: Tony Berber Sardinha / Resumo: Com a presente dissertação, estudamos características da tradução juramentada na direção inglês.português, no que concerne a semelhanças e diferenças no uso de termos simples, expressões fixas e semifixas mais freqüentes encontrados em contratos de compra e venda. A pesquisa situa-se no campo dos Estudos da Tradução Baseados em Corpus e no da Lingüística de Corpus; ainda recorre, em parte, ao arcabouço teórico-metodológico da Terminologia. O corpus de estudo de textos traduzidos no modo juramentado contém: 34 contratos de compra traduzidos por dois tradutores; compilamos, também, um corpus comparável de textos originalmente escritos em inglês e português, referentes a contratos de compra e venda. A pesquisa conta com o auxilio do programa de computador WordSmith Tools versão 4.0 para o levantamento dos dados, tendo sido utilizadas as ferramentas WordList, KeyWord e Concord. A partir dos dados gerados, criamos um glossário de termos simples, e de expressões fixas e semifixas mais freqüentes, presentes no corpus de estudo. Os termos simples levantados constam de dicionários; no entanto, não se encontra registrada, na maioria da obras, qualquer referência quanto ao uso. Por sua vez, a maior parte das expressões fixas e semifixas não se encontram nos dicionários. Com a utilização do corpus comparável, foi possível localizar aproximadamente 70% dessas expressões fixas e semifixas. Além do levantamento léxico, a descrição de características da tradução juramentada, de seus aspectos legais, e da forma de apresentação do texto podem ser de grande utilidade para o tradutor aprendiz. Pode-se perceber o emprego de traduções literais, o que permitiria inferir o uso de uma linguagem mais atrelada ao original, de inserções em português de construções sintáticas, e de expressões da linguagem contratual...(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The present study aims at observing features of sworn translation in the English.Portuguese direction, concerning similarities and differences in the use of the most frequent simple terms, fixed and semi-fixed expressions present in sales contracts analyzed. This study has its theoretical basis on Corpus-Based Translation Studies, on Corpus Linguistics and on some theoretical concepts in Terminology. Our corpora of study comprise 34 sales contracts, translated by two sworn translators. We also compiled two comparable corpora of sales contract: one originally written in Portuguese and another in English. We used three tools of the software WordSmith Tool 4.0 in order to extract data: WordList, KeyWord and Concord. Based on the lexicon found in sales contracts corpora, we built a glossary of simple terms, fixed and semi-fixed expressions. Although the simple terms were present in the dictionaries of our support corpus, there is no information concerning their use. Regarding fixed and semifixed expressions most of them were not found in these dictionaries. The Portuguese comparable corpus showed approximately 70% of fixed and semi-fixed expressions. Also, descriptions about features of sworn translation, its legal aspects, and the text layout can be useful to the learner translator. The occurrence of literal translation, reveals a tendency to use a language closer to the style of sales contracts originally written in English. In addition, we observed a tendency to translate errors in clause numbers as well as imprecise adjectives and adverbs. Another important feature observed is the use of less lexical variation, which is confirmed by the standardized type/token ratio difference (2,29) in relation to the comparable corpus in Portuguese. This result also indicates that in the sworn translations studied, there is a tendency to use more repetition of words than in the analyzed sales contracts originally written in Portuguese. / Mestre

O objetivo da pesquisa O aspecto rítmico na tradução de cinco poemas de Ingeborg Bachmann é realizar traduções dos poemas \"Die gestundete Zeit\", \"Anrufung des Großen Bären\", \"Alle Tage\", \"Erklär mir, Liebe\" e \"Was wahr ist\" de Ingeborg Bachmann (1926-1973), as quais considerem o aspecto rítmico como fator fundamental do processo tradutório. Para tanto, serão analisadas as estruturas internas do ritmo nos poemas escolhidos à luz de reflexões teóricas acerca de o que é e como se manifesta o ritmo. A partir de tal análise e das reflexões será proposta, por fim, uma estratégia de trabalho tradutório que privilegie tais estruturas rítmicas no texto de chegada. / The purpose of The rhythmic aspect on translating five poems from Ingeborg Bachmann is to translate the poems ,,Die gestundete Zeit\", ,,Anrufung des Großen Bären\", ,,Alle Tage\", ,,Erklär mir, Liebe\" and ,,Was wahr ist\", so that on translating them their rhythmic aspect will be of cardinal importance. To this end, the internal rhythmic structures within those poems will be analysed under theories which state what the rhythm is and how it displays itself in a poem. Based on this analysis and on the theoretical reflection I will then propose a translating strategy in which these rhythmic structures are the priority in the target language.

A \'hipótese da retradução\' pelas modalidades tradutórias, nas traduções para a língua inglesa de A paixão segundo G.H. / The retranslation hypothesis verified by modalities of translation, in two English translations of The Passion According to G.H.Julieta Widman 30 September 2016 (has links)
O principal objetivo deste trabalho é verificar quantitativamente a chamada hipótese da retradução de Berman (1990), através do Método das Modalidades de Tradução (MMT), elaborado por Aubert (1977, 1998), derivado do modelo pedagógico de procedimentos técnicos da tradução de Vinay e Darbelnet (1958), num estudo de caso de duas traduções para a língua inglesa do livro A Paixão Segundo G. H., escrito por Clarice Lispector em 1964, traduzido por Ronald W. de Sousa, em 1988 e retraduzido por Idra Novey, em 2012. A fundamentação teórica discorre sobre os conceitos de domesticação e estrangeirização, segundo Venuti, e sobre o percurso da retradução, desde 1990 até nossos dias. Também são comentados a vida e a arte de Clarice Lispector, bem como seus dois tradutores. Os trabalhos de Hélène Cixous e Benjamin Moser são relacionados aos possíveis motivos para a retradução. O MMT é apresentado e explicado. A comparação intuitiva sugeriu que as duas traduções pareciam muito literais, com algumas diferenças possivelmente devidas à subjetividade dos tradutores e exigências dos editores. Entretanto, o MMT, em uma amostra de 542 palavras, mostrou que a quantidade de domesticação na tradução foi estatisticamente mais alta do que na retradução, não rejeitando, portanto a hipótese de Berman. / This dissertation aims to quantitatively verify Bermans hypothesis of retranslation by describing and applying Auberts (1977, 1989) Method of Modalities of Translation (MMT), derived from Vinay and Darbelnets pedagogical model of technical procedures of translation (1958), in a case study of two English translations of The Passion According to G.H., by Clarice Lispector. The original was written in 1964, the first translation was made in 1988 by Ronald W. de Sousa, and the retranslation in 2012 by Idra Novey. The theoretical framework presents Venutis concepts of domestication and foreignization and the history of ideas on retranslation, from 1990 to the present. Clarice Lispector, the woman, and the writer, as well as its translators are described and commented on. Hélène Cixous and Benjamin Mosers works are presented as related to the motives of the retranslation. The Method (MMT) is presented and explained. Both translations seemed very literal with some differences possibly due to the translators subjectivity and demands of the editors. However, in a sample of 542 words the amount of domestication in the translation was statistically higher than in the retranslation and therefore in line with Bermans hypothesis.

O objeto de estudo deste trabalho é a tradução de Os lusíadas, de Luís Vaz de Camões, feita pelo poeta escocês William Julius Mickle e publicada na Inglaterra em 1776. Essa tradução foi um sucesso na época de sua publicação e no século seguinte, tornando-se, ao longo dos anos, a mais lida e citada de todas as traduções da obra para o inglês. Pretende-se mostrar que a tradução de Mickle reflete a intrincada rede de convenções, normas e interesses vigentes no Reino da Grã-Bretanha no final do século XVIII, e que as grandes liberdades tomadas por Mickle com o poema original se articulam a fatores históricos, sociais e econômicos, assim como às normas culturais da época, uma fase de transição entre o Neoclassicismo augustano e o Romantismo. Mickle adaptou o épico camoniano para o público britânico do final do século XVIII, rotulou-o como A Epopeia do Comércio e acrescentou paratextos de cunho ideológico. Manipulando o poema original tanto no aspecto poético quanto ideológico, Mickle transformou Os lusíadas em uma narrativa a serviço do Império Britânico e contribuiu como outros poetas de sua época que celebraram o crescimento da riqueza e do poder britânicos para forjar uma identidade poética e cultural para o Império Britânico. / The object of study of this work is the translation of Luís Vaz de Camõess Os lusíadas by the Scottish poet William Julius Mickle, published in England in 1776. This translation was a success in its time and in the ensuing century, having become over the years the most widely read and quoted among all the translations of Os lusíadas into English. It will be shown that Mickles translation reflects the intricate network of conventions, norms and interests prevailing in Britain in the late 18th century, and also that the great liberties he took with the original poem are connected to historical, social and economic factors, as well as the cultural norms of the time, a transitional period between the Augustan Neoclassicism and Romanticism. The thesis to be demonstrated is that, in his translation and paratextual elements that accompany it, Mickle reenacts and updates the medieval concept of translatio imperii et studii the idea that not only imperial power, but also knowledge and culture, were transferred from East to West. Mickle adapted Camõess epic for the late eighteenth-century British audience, labelled it as The Epic Poem of Commerce and added ideologically charged paratexts to his translation. By manipulating the original poem both poetically and ideologically, Mickle transformed Os lusíadas into a narrative at the service of the British Empire and contributed like other poets of his time who celebrated the growth of Britains wealth and power to forge a poetic and cultural identity for the British Empire.

Cette thèse est le fruit d’un projet de recherche qui mêle la pratique et la théorie de la traduction. Divisée en deux volumes, elle étudie des questions liées à la traduction de l’argot tel qu’utilisé dans des oeuvres de fiction. Le premier comprend un commentaire critique composé de trois parties, et le second une traduction en anglais du roman Moi non (P. Goujon, Gallimard, 2003). L’intrigue du roman se déroulant en banlieue parisienne, le commentaire explore la façon dont les jeunes adultes marginalisés peuvent s’exprimer par l’emploi de l’argot, une variété linguistique non-standard. Cette variété est souvent représentative d’un lieu précis et d’une identité particulière, participant à un ensemble de formes d’expression qui sert à distinguer la jeunesse marginalisée de groupes dominants. Une telle utilisation de la langue soulève des questions concrètes et abstraites quand on décide de la transcrire et de la traduire dans une oeuvre de fiction. Souvent, le traducteur a recours à l’emploi d’une langue standard ou à l’utilisation d’un argot dit « équivalent ». La traduction proposée de Moi non s’inscrit dans une méthode alternative qui s’inspire d’un style informel ainsi que de procédés créatifs que l’on peut notamment employer dans le rap et dans l’élaboration de nouvelles expressions argotiques. Préférant éviter de situer la traduction dans une aire géographique spécifique, cette traduction invite à explorer les points communs de l’ensemble des parlers jeunes du monde anglophone. Ce projet représente ainsi une opportunité de vérifier la cohérence et la logique de cette démarche alternative de la traduction de l’argot d’un roman, et de la comparer avec l’approche empruntée par les traducteurs de textes similaires. / This thesis is the fruit of a research project which marries translation practice and theory. Separated into two volumes, it explores questions related to the translation of slang in fictional texts. The first volume is a critical commentary composed of three parts, and the second a translation from French into English of the novel Moi non by Patrick Goujon (Gallimard, 2003). Since the plot unfolds in the banlieue of Paris, the critical component investigates the way in which marginalised youth can express themselves through slang, a variety of non-standard language. Often representative of a specific place and identity, slang constitutes one of many forms of expression that contribute to setting marginalised youth apart from dominant groups. Such use of language raises a number of questions, both concrete and abstract in nature, when one decides to transcribe and translate it in a work of fiction. Translators often employ standard language to render this voice in the translated text or otherwise make use of an “equivalent” slang. The proposed translation of Moi non embodies an alternative method inspired by an overall informal style of writing, as well as by the creative devices employed in rap lyrics and in the creation of slang words and expressions. In an effort to avoid suggesting a specific setting outside of the banlieue, this translation seeks to identify and harness features of English shared by young people throughout the Anglosphere. This thesis thus represents an opportunity to ensure the coherence and the logic of this alternative approach to translating slang in an entire novel, and to compare this approach with that adopted by the translators of similar texts.
