Meggers e Gregory Rabassa. / Intending to investigate the social and translational linguistic behaviors of two translators in face of obstacles imposed by cultural barriers in translation, we analyzed a parallel corpus of Social Anthropology of Civilization sub-area, composed by the works, O processo civilizatório (1968) e O povo brasileiro (1995), written by the anthropologist Darcy Ribeiro, as well as by their translations into English, performed by Betty J. Meggers and Gregory Rabassa, respectively. We also used two comparable corpora of Anthropology in Portuguese and in English, and a support corpus composed mainly of dictionaries of Social Sciences and Anthropology. The main objectives that guided this research were: to observe the translation of terms and expressions in Darcy Ribeiro’s works, to analyze the translational process concerning to the terminological Brazilianisms and neologisms produced by the author; to investigate the translators’ linguistic and cultural behavior through the analysis of resources used by them in their translations; to identify simplification and explicitation features in the two translated texts; and to elaborate two bilingual glossaries for anthropological terminology. With these purposes, we based our study on Camargo’s interdisciplinary proposal (2005,2007) adopting, for the electronic collection and processing of data, the theoretical and methodological framework of Corpus-Based Translation Studies (Baker, 1993, 1995, 1996, 2000), of Corpus Linguistics (BERBER SARDINHA, 2004, 2010, TOGNINI-BONELLI, 2001) and, in part, of Terminology (BARROS, 2004; KRIEGER & FINATTO, 2004, FAULSTICH, 1995, 2000). / In this study, we investigated the translation of cultural markers present in two works written by JoãoUbaldo Ribeiro: Sargento Getúlio, translated by the self-translator as Sergeant Getulio; and the other, O sorriso do lagarto, by Clifford Landers as The Lizard’s Smile. The choices of the self-translator and the professional translator were analysed, in the respective target texts, concerning cultural differences related to cultural markers in order to observe similarities and diferences in both pairs of texts. We also investigated features of explicitation and simplification found in the respective translated texts. The theoretical approach is based on Corpus-Based Translation Studies (Baker, 1993, 1996, 2000, 2004); Corpus Linguistics (Berber Sardinha, 2004), Camargo’s interdisciplinary proposal (2005, 2007), studies on cultural domains (Nida, 1945; Aubert, 1981, 2006), and on translation modalities (Aubert, 1984, 1998). For word extraction, we used the tools provided by the WordSmith Tools program, version 4.0, which enable us to analyse data in a broader and more dynamic way. The results obtained suggest that João Ubaldo Ribeiro’s output shows patterns more likely to be consciously reproduced on the basis of the source text. On the other hand, Landers seems to be closer to the normal patterning of translated English, in an attempt to make the translated text easier for the target reader. Esta pesquisa é parte de um projeto maior, o PETra – Padrões de Estilo de Tradutores, coordenado pela Profa. Dra. Os resultados encontrados nesta pesquisa mostram que a tradutora Irene Matthews tende a usar estratégias que podem ser identificadas como características de normalização / This thesis aims at analyzing the translation of words considered recurring and preferred in the novel As mulheres de Tijucopapo, by Marilene Felinto, as well as observing possible tendencies of normalization by the translator Irene Matthews in the translation to English: The women of Tijucopapo. This research is part of a bigger project, the PETra (Padrões de Estilo de Tradutores), coordinated by Doc. Diva Cardoso de Camargo. The methodology employed is that of corpus-based translation studies (proposed by Baker, 1993, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2004; Scott‘s study concerning normalization, 1998; and Camargo‘s research studies, 2005, 2007), and that of corpus linguistics (Berber Sardinha‘s study, 2003, 2004). We also base our study on Felinto‘s critical heritage (studies by Araújo, 2006; Bailey, 2010; Fiorucci, 2009; Gonçalves, 2001; Jacomel, 2008; Santos, 2005; Schmidt, 2009; Vieira, 2001; Wanderley, 2009, and Xavier, 2003). The research was carried out by means of a combination of semi- manual and computerized analyses. Initially, we used the computer software WordSmith Tools to obtain the frequency of the words in Felinto‘s book. Then, we went on to use the tool KeyWords to identify which would be the keywords in the author‘s novel. After collecting these data, we used Felinto‘s critical heritage in order to select five words that could be considered as recurring and preferred in Felinto‘s writing: 'homem‘ ('man‟), 'mulheres‘ ('women)‘, 'chuva‘ ('rain‘), 'amor‘ ('love‘) and 'égua‘ ('mare‘). Based on Scott (1998), we analyzed the translation of the five selected words in relation to nine normalization features. The results obtained in this study show that the translator Irene Matthews tends to use strategies that may be identified as features of normalization

Traduttori Traditori: The Tasks of the Creative “Traitor” and the Problematic of Translation (Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, José Martí, and Octavio Paz)

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: Every act of communication, and therefore, reading, are in themselves acts of translation and interpretation, as the reader creates a mental representation or reconstruction of the text, extrapolating meaning from it. Interlinguistic translation adds another dimension to these hermeneutic processes, and in the movement through space and time, constant re-interpretation, new translations, and, often, modern theories and perspectives, can interfere with or bring clarity to the meaning of the original text, as well as add to the myth-creation of the writers themselves. This study centers on some of the great literary figures in poetic and essayistic production in the world of Spanish-speaking letters: Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, José Martí, and Octavio Paz. These figures represent not only important literary movements going from the baroque to modernismo, to the vanguardia and to the creation of the self-conscious “modern” poet, but also are among the most well known Spanish-language writers in the English-speaking world. They are all self-aware creators, who, in distinct ways, join poetry, critical essays and theory that are at once an extension of and revolve around their personal poetics, projected toward the currents of their respective epochs. Finding problematic moments in translation theory and practice, and studying them in the context of the analysis of these great literary figures, at the same time contributes to a new understanding of translation theory itself. These ‘case studies’ expose certain key moments of existing translations, moments that later contribute to critical and interpretive dialogue in a type of hermeneutic spiral of influence. They also show the importance of translation as a contribution to cultural changes and literary movements. This ultimately aids in the understanding of the important points of contact between the many worlds occupied by these great writers and the ways in which they, and in turn, their translators, recreate the contexts in which they were produced. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Spanish 2016

Zora Neale Hurston & Their Eyes Were Watching God: a construção de uma identidade afro-americana feminina e a tradução para o português do Brasil / Zora Neale Hurston & Their Eyes Were Watching God: The construction of an african-american female identity and the translation turn in brazilian portuguese

Rodrigo Carvalho Alva 28 March 2007 (has links)
The present dissertation has two main goals. The first, in part I, is to analyze the construction of the female identity of the main character of the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston. Therefore, four chapters compose the first part of this work. In the first three, before the discussion, the text tries to bring the readers closer to the discussion still to come. In order to do this, these initial chapters aim to make the reader more familiar with the author, then with her work, and, last but not least, with the historical moment in the United States during the period of the African-American cultural movement known as the Harlem Renaissance. The second goal is to analyze the translation of the novel, Seus Olhos Viam Deus, to Portuguese and, if possible, to make suggestions for the translation crossroads and obstacles that the translator might have faced. By doing this, this dissertation aims to present solutions that may be used in future translations to Brazilian Portuguese of works by African-American writers. Therefore, the parts II and III of this work, which are composed by three more chapters, bring a literary review about recent translation theories and, through an innovative perspective, detach a few points which are going to be subsequently discussed.

A ação dos componentes da patronagem sobre a literatura infanto-juvenil brasileira: o efeito sobre a tradução de Do outro mundo de Ana Maria Machado / The action of the components of patronage on Brazilian children's literature: the effect on the translation of From another world by Ana Maria Machado

Veronica Suhett do Nascimento 14 March 2012 (has links)
O estudo se encerra com considerações a respeito da tradução de literatura Infanto-juvenil brasileira e as implicações sob o público-alvo / The aims of this research are, (i) verify the action of the components of patronage: status, economic and ideologic on Brazilian Childrens Literature translation in the hegemonic American culture and, (ii) verify if the translation of the Culture Especific Items from From Another World by Ana Maria Machado comply with the translation Norms of the genre, as Zohar Shavit (1996), which allow translators a greater freedom in adjusting the plot, characters and language to childrens knowledge and reading. The relationship between these objectives is found at Gideon Tourys affirmation (1995a, p. 13) that the position occupied by the translation system in the target culture directly affects the strategies adopted by translators and the composition of the translated texts. Based on the Descriptive Translation Studies (TOURY, 1995b), the concept of patronage introduced by André Lefevere (1992) associated with the remarks made by James English (2005) regarding the importance of the awards in the todays society are fundamental to understand the action of the components of patronage under Children and Youth literature. Another important concept for the purpose of this study is Cultural Specific Item (CSI) by Javier Franco Aixelá (1996). In the analysis of this study data I used Carla Bentes (2005) reformulation of the translation strategies classification of the items of Do Outro Mundo and its English translation From Another World. The corpus analyses procedures were based on the model of Lambert and van Gorp (1985) for literary analysis. I use from this model the preliminary data analysis and microtextual analysis for corresponding to the aims of this research. The study concludes with considerations regarding the translation of Childrens literature in Brazil and the implications for the target audience

Increasing Willingness and Opportunities to Communicate in a Foreign Language with Machine Translation and Instant Messaging

Tekwa, Kizito 05 April 2018 (has links)
Advances in technology over the last few decades have led to significant changes in the way we communicate. Technological innovation has been one of the reasons for the development of computer-mediated communication (CMC), which has had far-reaching implications in the private and professional lives of many people. Instant messaging (IM), which is one form of computer-mediated communication, has significantly gained popularity over the years and many scholars have examined its influence in areas including business and academics. Initially developed to enhance communication between users who understood the same language, some IM clients including Wechat (www.wechat.com), QQ International (www.imqq.com), and Skype Translator (www.skype.com) have integrated a built-in translation application that facilitates communication among users that speak different languages. The current research project explores the relationship between machine translation, IM, and foreign language (FL) learning. In particular, it investigates whether machine-translated IM could improve the willingness to communicate (WTC) of beginner FL learners and whether the IM translation tool offers learners opportunities to communicate (OTC) in the FL. To answer these questions, China-based beginner FL learners were recruited and paired with native and near-native English speakers based in Canada. China-based participants completed two questionnaires and also exchanged (machine-translated) IM on selected topics with Canada-based participants for a period of ten weeks. Some China-based participants communicated with the help of the IM translation tool, while the others communicated without the tool. After analyzing the data gathered during the study, we found that WTC increased more for participants with the IM translation tool than for participants without the IM translation tool. Our analysis also indicated that the IM translation tool offered participants OTC in English. This was illustrated in various conversation aspects including number of words and turns exchanged, synchronous exchanges, ownership, conversation enhancement, topics discussed, tasks undertaken, and requests for paraphrase, repetition and explanation. In the discussion of the implications of our findings, we outline how the research project reinforced our understanding of the concept of WTC in a technology driven FL learning environment. We also discuss the implications of our findings for machine translation (MT), FL, and translation studies. Our discussion focuses on the debate on the tools to use and content to teach in the translator and FL training environments as well as various concepts in translation studies including MT quality, writing for MT, fit-for-purpose MT, collaboration and MT post-editing. This project enables us to test the applicability of MT in a different context using a novel group of users. The project therefore contributes to ongoing research on the relationship between CMC (specifically IM), MT, and FL learning, as well as to our knowledge of applications and perceptions of MT.

Translations of the Caribbean: at words' end? : A Study of the Translation of Literary Dialect in A State of Independence

Sannholm, Raphael January 2008 (has links)
The aim of this study was to identify the strategies used to render the literary dialect in A State of Independence into the Swedish translation. In order to systematically study the translation solutions, a number of ‘coupled pairs’ consisting of source text ‘problems’ and target text ‘solutions’ were extracted from the original text and the translation. The ‘coupled pairs’ were then analysed in order to detect regularities in the translation solutions. The study showed that the major strategy used by the translator was the use of ‘eye-dialect’, i.e. non-standard spellings that simulate non-standard speech. Moreover, some passages in the translation had been standardised, whereas eye-dialectal spellings were found in other passages where the original did not contain any non-standard features. Finally, a comparative count of dialectally marked utterances in both texts was made. The count showed that the dialectal markers were in the majority in the translation, which might indicate that the translator has tried to compensate for the lack of equivalent target language features.

nÃo hà / Translation action is a complex task that involves a greater understanding of culture and must be performed critically so that there is a reflection on the meaning of words within a context and not just the handling of grammatical forms from a language to another. In this context, subtitle translation has emerged as a way of transmitting cultural values due to the fact that it is a tool that allows the interaction between different cultures. Thus, in this work the subtitles will be taken as reference, understanding them as a translation process that takes into account linguistic, technical and mainly cultural aspects. Taking into account the cultural aspects, this work aims to investigate the presence of cultural markers (CM) in the subtitles of five The Simpsons episodes related to North - American culture and analyze how these terms were translated, that is, which translation procedures (TP) are involved in the translation process of this CM. For this analysis, the Polysystem Theory, createded by Itamar Even-Zohar (1970), the Descriptive Translation Studies of Gideon Toury (1998), the domestication concept proposed by Venuti (1998) and the notion of TP offered by Vinay and Darbelnet (1995) were taken as reference. For the data collection, srt files were used with the original English subtitles and another file of the same format with subtitles in Brazilian Portuguese. Through comparative analysis, the CM were collected and subdivided into subcategories according to their characteristics to make the analysis systematized. This subdivision was developed by this work and does not represent a truth in itself, being susceptible of changes and critics in future studies. Therefore, six subcategories of CM were suggested: language, clothing, personal style, typical foods, arts and brands. In the second stage, these CM were organized into tables to be examined. Then, in the third stage of the work and for the analysis of the collected terms, an instrumental based on Vinay and Darbelnet (1995), Venuti (1998) and Ivacovoni (2009) were developed. After analyzing the data, the exposition of them was done through graphs. The study concluded that all the translation procedures indicated in the research literature were detected, however, it was necessary to include the TP of omission, since it appeared in some translations. It is concluded then that the analysis indicated that the translation of the subtitles chose to approximate the text to the culture of the target reader.
