<p>This study investigates how best to solve difficulties that may arise when translating bird literature from English into Swedish. The focus of the study lies on the translation of attributive adjectives and bird terminology. The text chosen for the translation, which serves as the basis for the analysis, is the section on general habits of the <em>Turdidae-family </em>in the comprehensive work <em>Handbook of the Birds of the World. </em>Translation theory that proved helpful in the translation process and in the subsequent analysis was primarily that of Vinay and Darbelnet (1995, 2004), Nida (1964a) and Newmark (1981). In most cases a literal translation could be perfonned, both in regard to attributive adjectives and bird tenninology, however, in some cases other translation procedures, such as transposition and equivalence, proved useful. Attributive adjectives that could not be translated literally, or that were preferred not to be translated literally, were translated through the use of transposition, into for instance: compound nouns, prepositional phrases, relative clauses and <em>that-clauses. </em>Bird terminology for which no suitable corresponding terminology could be found in the target language, was translated non-literally through the use of equivalence, into structures maintaining the equivalent semantic meaning in a natural way.</p>

The aim of this research paper is to analyze the peculiarities of grammatical translation transformations in modern English novel “Bridget Jones’s Diary” (1996) written by Helen Fielding and its translated Lithuanian version. To achieve this aim the following objectives have been set: 1. To present the theoretical background about translation as a science. 2. To represent the linguistic theory about the role of grammar in translation practice. 3. To explain the usage of grammatical translation transformations in the target text. 4. To reveal the distribution of pure and mixed grammatical translation transformations in the intended text. The structure of the work. The theoretical part focuses on the issues of translation. initiating. Namely, the development of translation studies, equivalence, methods, procedures and translation transformations have been presented. In the subsequent part, i.e. the practical analysis, the usage of grammatical translation transformations has been briefly analyzed considering the collected instances. / Darbo tikslas išanalizuoti gramatinių vertimo transformacijų įpatybes šiuolaikinėje anglų kalbos noveleje "Bridžitos Džouns dienoraštis" (1996)parašytos Helen Fielding ir šios knygos lietuviškame vertime. Pristatyti lingvistinę medžiagą apie gramatines vertimo transformacijas, grupuojant jas į sukeitimas, praleidimas, pridėjimas, pakeitimas. 3. Paaiškinti grynų ir mišrių gramatinių transformacijų pasiskirstymą tyriamajameme kūrinyje. Darbo struktūra. Teorinėje dalyje daugiausia dėmesio skiriama vertimui. Aprašyti: vertimo studijų vystimasis, ekvivalentiškumas, vertimo metodai, procesai ir transformacijos. The purpose of this paper is to discuss different translation strategies that may be used in translation from English to Swedish of a text on Country &amp; Western costuming. The focus will be on terminology, metaphors, and similes. In order to discuss the terminology, the metaphors, and simile, an English text has been translated into Swedish. To ensure a correct understanding of the source text, different dictionaries, encyclopaedias, various search engines and viewing services online have been very useful throughout the translation process. Corpora together with retailers’ web sites have also been valuable sources in providing variation and nuances to the translated text. Different sources on translation theory have also been reviewed; Newmark (1988) and Vinay and Darbelnet (1995). Terms have been selected out of their typical characteristic of being Western wear, and metaphors and simile out of their context to Western wear clothing. The results of the analysis show that a translator does not make use of one translation procedure when translating, but several. Which procedure that will be carried out is dependent on the context of the source text, the readership of the target text, the source text’s degree of specificity of the terminology, the source text’s imagery of the metaphors and simile, and the translator’s interpretation of the source text.

This dissertation seeks to test the proposition that public opinion is a driving force in integration, and thus examines the effect of euroscepticism on EU integration. Utilizing an understanding of integration as the process of European states achieving similar legal, social, cultural, political and economic policy outcomes while ceding greater policy power to European institutions, the relationship between aggregate level euroscepticism in EU member states (the United Kingdom, Germany, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden) and speed of compliance with EU policies is examined. More specifically, this dissertation examines the relationship between aggregate level euroscepticism in an EU member state, and the speed at which that state transposes EU directives. In testing this relationship a number of contextual conditions are examined, including the role of issue salience, domestic party systems, and electoral conditions. The findings of this dissertation suggest that the widely held belief that public opinion is driving European integration may be false.

Phage Mu transposes by two distinct pathways depending on the specific stage of its life cycle. A common θ strand transfer intermediate is resolved differentially in the two pathways. During lytic growth, the θ intermediate is resolved by replication of Mu initiated within the flanking target DNA; during integration of infecting Mu, it is resolved without replication, by removal and repair of DNA from a previous host that is still attached to the ends of the incoming Mu genome. Our studies show that the cryptic endonuclease activity reported for the isolated C-terminal domain of the transposase MuA, which is not observed in the full-length protein or in the assembled transpososome in vitro, is required in vivo for removal of the attached host DNA or “5’flap” after the infecting Mu genome has integrated into the E. coli chromosome. I have identified additional phage and host factors required for flap removal in vivo, which include an early Mu protein called Ner, and the E. coli protein ClpX. Ner regulates bidirectional transcription through the Mu transposition enhancer, while ClpX, a molecular chaperone, is known to interact with the C-terminus of MuA to remodel the transpososome for replication. The transpososome is a multi-subunit MuA complex assembled on the two paired ends of Mu. The enhancer DNA segment serves as an essential scaffold for transpososome assembly, and remains stably associated with θ strand transfer MuA complexes. I hypothesize that Ner-regulated transcription through the enhancer remodels transpososome conformation in the presence of ClpX, promoting activation of the MuA endonuclease, which resects flanking DNA during the repair pathway of Mu transposition. / text

This work attempts to analyze causes of divergent transposition of the Blue Card directive, regulating the conditions of immigration of highly-skilled workers from third countries, between individual EU Member States. The differences are analyzed on two levels. Firstly, in terms of timeliness and correctness of transposition, secondly, from a perspective of a different manner of transposition of the discretionary clauses entailed in the Blue Card directive (whether the Member States opted for an open or for a restrictive way of transposition of these provisions). Scholarly literature about transposition compliance and highly-silled immigration policies creates the foundation, by means of which the author identifies several variables and articulates hypotheses aiming at providing explanation of the divergent transposition of the directive in the respective Member States. The author classifies the Member States in groups and clusters according to their transposition performance and its results embody a point of departure for a subsequent analysis. From each group, certain number of countries is selected for a detailed country-level analysis in order to ensure universality and geographical representativeness of the outcomes. With the goal of creating faster and more efficient methods of generating unique Ac/Ds insertional mutants in a population of Fragaria vesca, various methods of seed germination, kanamycin screening, and the effects of varying nitrogen fertilization on diploid strawberry have been examined. Seed germination was improved to 42% in B5 liquid medium compared to _ on MS solid medium. Kanamycin screening during germination was most effective in liquid B5 medium as well. A readily discernable phonotypic difference between sensitive (necrotic radical) and resistant (branched roots) seedlings was observed in the B5 liquid medium and the frequency of escapes was reduced from __ on solid MS to __ in liquid B5. Although there were few phenotypic differences due to nitrogen application over the tested treatments (25-300 ppm) runner initiation was suppressed and chlorophyll was increased in the high (300 ppm) nitrogen treatment. There was limited evidence to suggest an increased rate of transposition in the high (300 ppm nitrogen) treatment level compared to those plants receiving lower levels of nitrogen. The selection efficiency and greater germination of the B5 liquid medium over MS medium would be expected to reduce the cost of screening thousands of seedlings because of the need for fewer disposables and medium transfers during the 5 week germination process. The use of B5 liquid medium, as well as treating plants with high levels of nitrogen (300 ppm), may be facilitate high throughput production of transposon tagged mutants in a population of F. vesca. / Master of Science
