A phenomenological study of four students' experiences of voluntary counselling and testingSefularo, Tebogo Veronica 19 November 2008 (has links)
Voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) has become a vital process in combating the spread of HIV/AIDS. Yet little has been published on how students experience the process of VCT. This study sought to describe and understand the experiences of voluntary counselling and testing among four students at Tshwane University of Technology. This research project focussed on students’ experiences when reporting for voluntary counselling and testing. The results were used to make recommendations for strategies to increase the accessibility and uptake of VCT by students. Using a phenomenological approach, tape recorded interviews were conducted with the four students of Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). The data were then categorised into five themes relating to the experience of VCT: emotions, perceptions, actions, thoughts and desires. The results showed that the students were mostly dissatisfied with the VCT clinic’s procedures and the counsellor’s attitudes. Also evident from this study was that counsellors’ professionalism, peer support, and a service that offers both pre- and post-test counselling play a significant role in students’ use of VCT. The findings of this study suggest that the following could be used as strategies to motivate students to utilise VCT services of VCT: (1) increase access and acceptability of VCT for students; (2) ensure access to factual information in the form of counselling; (3) make counselling a priority. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Psychology / unrestricted

The impact of the merger on the employees of Tshwane Univerty of TechnologyLalla, Vedhna 12 April 2010 (has links)
The goal of this research was to explore the impact of the merger on the employees of Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). The objective of this study aimed firstly, to conduct a literature review to measure the impact of the merger on the employees of Tshwane University of Technology; and secondly, to explore the impact of the merger on the employees of Tshwane University Technology through an empirical study. The research question for this study is: “What was the impact of the merger on the employees of Tshwane University of Technology”. This study utilised a quantitative descriptive research design to analyse the data using statistical procedures. All the data was statistical in nature. The sample comprised 72 respondents from the TUT Gauteng community, i.e. TUT Pretoria campus, TUT Garankuwa campus and TUT Soshanguve campus. The research tool utilised to conduct the study was a self-administered questionnaire. This was hand delivered and collected from the respondents. The findings of this study revealed that mergers definitely impact on people from both a personal and professional perspective. The study further revealed that the merger had a negative impact on management relationships, job security, job position and promotion, communication, performance standards and some elements of collegial relationships. Further research is suggested with regards to the communication breakdown and how it affected the merger. This study indicated distinctly that there was a breakdown in communication as a result of the merger. However the researcher believes that this area should be investigated further to allow others to discover what mechanisms to put in place so that communication during a merger is transparent and consistent. The researcher is also of the belief that further research is necessary to determine whether responses participants had given concerning to the impact of the merger were in any way affected by their own level of maturity and resilience. The practices that have allowed farming to be separated from the city, with the resultant food security concerns, are being globally challenged.
Simultaneously, low levels of employable skills in South Africa are magnifying unemployment levels in the country.
Concurrently Pretoria has embraced urban programmes to unify urban areas which were previously effectively fragmented by apartheid’s Group Areas Act.
This dissertation finds its genesis in this context of multiple concerns where the concurrent issues provide architecture with a unique challenge to interpret and to respond to the revised relationships:
•
between farming and the city,
•
between citizens and their cities, and
•
between unemployment and economic development.
This dissertation undertakes the multi-function of addressing these conditions not only in terms of technical intervention, but more importantly by the examination of the changing urban context and by re-embracing food production within the city.
The situation created by the crossroads in which the world, the nation and the city of Tshwane find themselves provides an unprecedented opportunity for an architectural expression which is influenced by a fresh re-assessment of local, national and global concerns.

I föreliggande studie har nio socialsekreterare intervjuats i syfte att undersöka hur de ser på socialtjänstens bemötande av våldsutsatta kvinnor utan permanent uppehållstillstånd (PUT). I studien är det socialsekreterarnas föreställningar om våldsutsatta kvinnor utan PUT och den hjälp de kan få som står i centrum. Intervjumaterialet har analyserats utifrån ett intersektionellt perspektiv. I studien skildras kvinnor utan PUT som särskilt sårbara när de utsätts för våld. Denna sårbarhet kan både förstås som ett uttryck för kvinnornas våldserfarenheter och det faktum att de inte har rätt till samma stöd från socialtjänsten som andra våldsutsatta kvinnor.

The man and the creation : an inquiry into the modern fascination of king TutankhamunDoerr, Sarah A. 01 January 2008 (has links)
With each generation arrives at a new understanding and specifically creates a new representation of the ancient pharaoh Tutankhamun. My study analyzes the role of Tutankhamun in American media and popular culture, especially the changing depictions of the Pharaoh over time. My thesis discusses the historical Tutankhamμn and the how this differs from the "Golden Boy" Tut popularized in modem times since the discovering of the tomb by Howard Carter. His discovery launched an Egyptomania craze periodically resurged over the course of the century~ particularly in the years immediately following the find, 1978t and in 2005-2007. My analysis further explores why American society fashioned particular representations of Tutankbamun, and Egypt as a whole from his tomb that contained insufficient connections with the historical King Tutanlqiamun. The study concentrates on three time periods distinct by heightened fascination - the opening of the tomb and the first and second museum touring of the Tut exhibits in the United States. The created images are exploited for monetary gain by the media while driven by Western society as a measure of our own cultural self--definition. Each modification of the Pharaoh reflects the changing culture of American society.

The new South Africa is encouraging multilingualism. The Department of Education has given a mandate to promote African languages. The Department of Higher Education came up with higher education language policy in 2002. All the higher education institutions have to choose indigenous languages to promote. Tshwane University of Technology has decided to promote Setswana and siSwati as their primary and secondary languages, respectively, to be used within the university.
This study is about assessing the implementation of the Tshwane University of Technology’s language Policy. The researcher uses mixed methods to conduct the research. A survey and observation were used as tools to collect data. The researcher observed the implementation of the language policy at Tshwane University of Technology (Soshanguve Campus). The researcher also reviewed the language policies for Higher education and the Tshwane University of Technology’s language policy. The signage, marketing tools, billboards, directions and university documents were observed. This research was based on promoting the indigenous languages. From the data collected, Setswana is not used to convey the message within the university; therefore the indigenous languages are not yet implemented or promoted / African Languages / M. A.
