We analyse how these features vary across countries with different factor endowments, and across markets of different size. In this model we can obtain trade gains via two channels. First, when we open the economy, most productive firms start to export their product, then, they demand more producing factors and wages rises, thus, those firms that are less productive will be forced to stop to produce. Second channel is via endogenous mark-ups, when we open the economy, the competition gets ``tougher'', then, mark-ups falls, thus, those firms that are less productive will stop to produce. We also show that comparative advantage works as a ``third channel'' of trade gains, because, all trade gains results are magnified in comparative advantage industry of both countries. We also make a numerical exercise to see how endogenous variables of the model vary when trade costs fall.

The born-global phenomenon and the internationalization of Brazilian technology-based start-ups are very recent topics in the academic literature due to the phenomenon itself also being relatively recent. Not many studies have been made focusing on the Brazilian market, and the few ones that do focus on Brazil, have been made from a quantitative perspective. This study, on the other hand, aims to analyze start-ups qualitatively. An extensive literature review was developed to better analyze the foundations on which the study would be built on, reviewing internationalization methods, entrepreneurship in Brazil, and the born-global phenomenon in general. In addition, interviews were conducted with entrepreneurs in Brazil who have been through internationalizing their business models, in order to gather in-depth insights regarding the nuances of the Brazilian reality. The scalability of technology-dependent business models, internationalization triggers, criteria for selecting target markets, governmental programs, and the role of Brazilian start-ups in a global perspective, were also factors analyzed.

Pride and proliferation : Jane Austen meets zombies in a mash-up

Veras, Adriane Ferreira January 2015 (has links)
The present research brings an attempt to elucidate what I consider a phenomenon in literature, the mash-ups. Is the author still present in her text or the one who inserts, remixes and adds to the work is the actual author? This and other questions are investigated. With the theoretical approach of Sanders (2006), Shields (2010), Lessig (2004), and others, there is an investigation on adaptations, collage, appropriations and authorial rights. The novel analyzed here is literature no longer protected by copyright and therefore considered apt for tweaking, thus allowing for the juxtaposition which is at the core of the literary genre under scrutiny. This mash-up‘s tremendous commercial success goes to show that not only Jane Austen, but also the undead have become commodities, which leads the possible conclusions that Austen sells, and zombies sell, and they all give readers something they crave for, perhaps gentle manners, romance, mores and values long gone; and in the case of the living-dead, they explore themes that transgress and threaten our sense of cleanliness and propriety, particularly referencing the body, our identities, and our mortality. Through the point of view of Žižek (2008), and other thinkers, it is possible to infer that the book's success may be regarded as a tribute to the power of viral marketing, to the long lasting and continuous interest in Jane Austen, and to the current zombie zeitgeist.

Electronic States of High-k Oxides in Gate Stack Structures

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: In this dissertation, in-situ X-ray and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy have been employed to study the interface chemistry and electronic structure of potential high-k gate stack materials. In these gate stack materials, HfO2 and La2O3 are selected as high-k dielectrics, VO2 and ZnO serve as potential channel layer materials. The gate stack structures have been prepared using a reactive electron beam system and a plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition system. Three interrelated issues represent the central themes of the research: 1) the interface band alignment, 2) candidate high-k materials, and 3) band bending, internal electric fields, and charge transfer. 1) The most highlighted issue is the band alignment of specific high-k structures. Band alignment relationships were deduced by analysis of XPS and UPS spectra for three different structures: a) HfO2/VO2/SiO2/Si, b) HfO2-La2O3/ZnO/SiO2/Si, and c) HfO2/VO2/ HfO2/SiO2/Si. The valence band offset of HfO2/VO2, ZnO/SiO2 and HfO2/SiO2 are determined to be 3.4 ± 0.1, 1.5 ± 0.1, and 0.7 ± 0.1 eV. The valence band offset between HfO2-La2O3 and ZnO was almost negligible. Two band alignment models, the electron affinity model and the charge neutrality level model, are discussed. The results show the charge neutrality model is preferred to describe these structures. 2) High-k candidate materials were studied through comparison of pure Hf oxide, pure La oxide, and alloyed Hf-La oxide films. An issue with the application of pure HfO2 is crystallization which may increase the leakage current in gate stack structures. An issue with the application of pure La2O3 is the presence of carbon contamination in the film. Our study shows that the alloyed Hf-La oxide films exhibit an amorphous structure along with reduced carbon contamination. 3) Band bending and internal electric fields in the gate stack structure were observed by XPS and UPS and indicate the charge transfer during the growth and process. The oxygen plasma may induce excess oxygen species with negative charges, which could be removed by He plasma treatment. The final HfO2 capping layer deposition may reduce the internal potential inside the structures. The band structure was approaching to a flat band condition. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Physics 2012

Estudo teÃrico: UPQC-UPS monofÃsica com possibilidade de filtragem ativa utilizando a teoria p-q / Single phase UPQC-UPS with active filtering capabilities by using p-q theory

Dante Victor Shimoda Pereira 13 June 2013 (has links)
This work proposes the design of an UPQC-UPS high efficiency single phase 1.4 kVA with active filter capabilities throughout the parallel and series converters. With this topology, it is possible to obtain high efficiency and combine the advantages of both on-line and line interactive UPS systems improving, at the same time, the grid energy quality. The series/parallel compensation references were generated using the p-q Theory which defines a joint of power definitions to deal with electric systems under non-sinusoidal conditions. According to the simulation results, it was shown that the system input current has a low total harmonic distortion (THDi) and it presents high power factor. Also, the load voltage has a sinusoidal shape with low total harmonic distortion (THDv), both in its grid and battery mode operation. Such simulations were developed in the software PSCAD/EMTDC.

Contrôle de gestion et innovation produit : observation et interprétation des influences réciproques / Management control and product innovation : observation and interpretation of mutual influences

Dangereux, Katia 07 December 2016 (has links)
Innovation and management control are both considered as determinants of business performance. Yet, these two concepts appear at first sight contradictory, and some researchers have presented them as difficult to reconcile, advocating innovative organizations to have recourse to other modes of control. The issue of the role and influence of management control in innovative context arises and motivates this doctoral work.Beyond the literature concerned with the influence of management control on innovation, we use the theoretical and conceptual frameworks bearing on managerial innovation and organizational ambidexterity in order to deal with this issue of the link between management control and product innovation. The methodology is exploratory, qualitative and adductive corresponding thus to an interpretativist epistemological positioning. It consists of a two-stage approach : an exploratory study with nineteen start-ups and SMEs innovative and two case studies of SME which are both recently entered into an innovation strategy. The results of this research show that innovation and management control are far from being antagonistic. First, management control whether interactive or cybernetic type appears as favorable to innovation, but innovation also appears to impact the management control systems, pushing companies to develop tools of control on the one hand, tools which are reshaped and adapted on the other hand. Finally, we observe that product innovation and managerial innovation support each other, but also that management control appears as contextual ambidexterity support. Moreover, this study highlights the key role of the leader as hybrid or ambidextrous actor.
