The impact of disrupted family life and school climate on the self-concept of the adolescentGasa, Velisiwe Goldencia 06 1900 (has links)
This study was undertaken to determine whether a disrupted family life and school climate has an impact on the self-concept of the adolescent. This problem was tackled and investigated from different angles : factors
within the home, factors outside the home, intrapsychic factors, interpersonal factors and school factors. An analysis of the above factors and their impact on the self-concept of the adolescent was done by means of measuring instruments in the form of a questionnaire. The results of the empirical research indicated that the more positive the family and school climate, the more positive the academic, social and emotional self-concept of the adolescent. The educational implications of the findings of the literature and the empirical study are discussed to assist teachers and parents to identify and eliminate factors that cause adolescents from disrupted families to underachieve and have negative self-concepts. / M.Ed. Parenting styles and the adjustment of black South African grade I children in single parent householdsMoremi, Dikeledi Margareth 25 August 2009 (has links)
The present study examined the relationship between parenting styles and the socioemotional adjustment of children at school. A sample size of 90 research participants was selected and included black South African grade I school children aged between 6 and 7
years from single parent households in Pretoria Central. Factor analyses and Cronbach's alphas were determined in order to establish the validity and reliability (alpha= 0.89 and 0. 72 respectively) of the measurement instruments. In general, results were inconsistent with previous findings: The three parenting styles had no direct relationship with children's socio-emotional adjustment at school. Except for two links, non- significant relations between parenting styles and six subscales of socio-emotional adjustment were detected. However, maternal age, preschool attendance and gender of the child interacted in different combinations with four of the six subscales of socio-emotional adjustment. Future studies investigating parenting styles should take account of other areas of adjustment. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Learner underachievement in rural schools in Kwazulu-NatalDala, Ndwamato James 11 1900 (has links)
Despite educational legislation and school reforms to promote improved performance and quality
education, underperformance among secondary school learners is still the norm in the rural schools of
KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). This dissertation investigates the problem of learner underachievement by means
of a literature study and an empirical inquiry. The former provides an overview of the provisions for and
problems of rural schooling in both an international and local context and it is followed by a discussion of
learner assessment and learner achievement in the South African education system, with specific
reference to KZN's schooling system and the problem of learner underachievement. The empirical
inquiry investigates the experience of learner achievement in four rural schools in KZN and makes use of
qualitative data gathered during individual and focus group interviews conducted with a small sample of
underachieving learners and their parents, educators and school managers. Based on these findings,
recommendations for improvement are made. / Comparative Education / M.A. (Comparative Education)

Oorsake van leermislukking in die junior primêre fase van skole in die Windhoek stadsgebied / Causes of learning failure in the junior primary school phase in the Windhoek municipal areaCloete Hendrika 11 1900 (has links)

• moet onderwysers beter opgelei word
• moet die ouers meer bewus gemaak word van hulle rot in die leersukses van hulle kinders.
• is meer skoolgeboue en onderwysers nodig om kleiner klasse te bewerkstellig. / The purpose of this research is to establish the extrinsic and intrinsic causes of learning failure with specific reference to schools in the Windhoek municipal area and to make recommendations to counteract learning failure. Learning failure and grade failing are disconcertingly high in schools in the Windhoek municipal area. After the Ministry of Education implemented the semi-automatic promotion system, grade failing decreased, but learning failure increased because learners are promoted without achieving success in a prior grade. According to the literature study, the causes of
learning failure are to be found in the home, the school, the environment, and the learner. Similarities regarding the causes of learning failure were found in the empirical investigation
and the literature study. To counteract these causes
• teachers should be better trained
• parents should become more aware of their role in the learning success of their children
• more school buildings and teachers are needed to limit class sizes. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Spesiale Behoeftes Onderwys)

Investigating the needs and challenges of underachieving Grade R learners in a Mitchell’s Plain primary schoolFilander, Beranese 10 1900 (has links)
Many learners enter Grade 1 underprepared, because they have not had the chance to develop the necessary skills, values or attitudes expected of learners in this year. This results in academic backlogs and school underachievement, with many learners from poor socio-economic backgrounds in which poverty and unemployment are rife. Early identification of gaps in their learning as well as the support is crucial. Landsberg (2005, p.80) states that addressing early intervention implies not only a focus on the child and the needs of children but also facilitation of the environment in which they live. Against this background the study aims to investigate the needs and challenges of underachieving Grade R learners in a Mitchell’s Plain primary school. A phenomenological qualitative research approach was adopted, using purposeful sampling to obtain participants, and semi-structured interviews, observations and documents to collect data from two Grade R practitioners. A thematic document analysis of 20 underachieving Grade R learners followed to support the findings. The researcher argues that not enough support is being provided for these learners; hence the study seeks to determine their needs and challenges in the school. It is believed that the findings will contribute meaningfully by making recommendations for focused support for these learners. / Inclusive Education / M. Ed. (Inclusive Education)

Vad har hänt med pojkars läsning? : En sammanställning av svenska pojkars resultat i internationella läsförståelseundersökningar / What has happened to Swedish boys' reading? : A compilation of Swedish boys’ results in international studies of reading competencePetersson, Isak January 2014 (has links)
This study aims to compile results from international surveys of students’ reading competence that Sweden has participated in, with particular focus on the results of Swedish boys. The purpose of the study is to reveal trends in boys’ reading, and analyse how differences between Swedish boys and girls’ reading has developed over time. The paper also offers an overview of Swedish boys and girls’ general performances throughout all surveys. In total, material from ten major international surveys has been analysed. Foremost, data has been collected from the survey reports written by the Swedish National Agency for Education. In analysing the material it was found, among other things, that Swedish boys as well as girls significantly have worsened their reading competence since the first survey in 1970. Furthermore, the gender differences in reading have increased considerably, and in the latest survey, PISA 2012, Swedish students registered historically high gender differences, a circumstance that largely could be attributed to the deteriorating results of Swedish boys. In addition, it became apparent that Swedish students’ reading attitudes have worsened the last decade, a trend particularly salient among boys.
