Developing literary Glasgow : towards a strategy for a reading, writing and publishing cityDocherty, Paul J. January 2018 (has links)
Since the 1990s, urban cultural policy in the UK has been bound to the cause of urban regeneration. Much has been written in examination and critique of this relationship, but what happens when the direction of strategic attention is reversed and civic leadership seeks to regenerate culture itself? The city of Glasgow, having made capital of culture over many decades, has moved towards a strategy for the development of literary Glasgow. This thesis documents a search for those factors crucial to that strategy. The research focuses on literary Glasgow as one aspect of the city’s cultural sector; identifies and examines gaps in the relationship between the civic cultural organisation and literary communities; and highlights those elements vital to the formation of a strategy for development of the literary in Glasgow. An extended period of participatory ethnographic research within the Aye Write! book festival and Sunny Govan Community Radio, is supplemented with data from interviews conducted across the literary sector and analysis of organisational documentation. Through these a gap has been identified between the policies and operations of a civic cultural organisation, and the desires of those engaged within the literary community. This gap is caused, in part, by the lack of a mechanism with which to reconcile contrasting narratives about the cultural essence of the city, or to negotiate the variations in definitions of value in relation to cultural engagement. The interdisciplinary approach builds upon insights from existing work within publishing studies, cultural policy, complexity theory and organisational studies to construct an understanding of the dynamics of Glasgow’s literary sector. This reveals the need for a framework in support of a landscape of practice, a desire for the placement of boundary objects to facilitate engagement, and the significance of value in relation to participation in literary activity. This work informs a strategy for literary Glasgow and contributes to conversations on strategies for cultural development in other cities.

The Bonton and Ideal neighborhoods in Dallas Texas, developed in the early 1900s, experienced physical and social decay throughout the 1980s. Neighborhood organizations and resident activism were vital to the rebirth of the community in the 1990s. Current revitalization efforts taking place there have been a source of contention as the neighborhood continues to overcome inequalities created by decades of racialized city planning initiatives. This thesis focuses on how the structuring structure of whiteness has historically affected, and continues to affect, the neighborhoods of Ideal and Bonton, as well as acts to identify how black residents have navigated their landscape and increased their collective capital through neighborhood activism.

La ciudad post-traumática. Marijin Dvor y el monte Trebević, dos espacios urbanos en transición en SarajevoBorelli, Caterina 29 October 2012 (has links)
En este trabajo se analizan las transformaciones ocurridas en la ciudad de Sarajevo después de la guerra de 1992-95. En particular se investiga cómo los cambios ocurridos en los últimos 20 años en el nivel macro (eso es: la doble transición, post-socialista y post-bélica) quedan reflejados, por un lado, en la forma exterior que asume la ciudad (por lo tanto su modificación física, nuevos proyectos urbanos) y, por el otro, cómo dichos cambios afectan a las relaciones sociales, sobre todo las tradicionales relaciones entre vecinos. El céntrico barrio de Marijin Dvor, emblemático por la presencia de las principales instituciones políticas y económicas, es el terreno en el que se desarrolla este primer eje de la investigación. Ahí me he dedicado a desarrollar principalmente dos temas: antes que nada, reconstruir las modificaciones en el régimen de propiedad de la vivienda que ha supuesto la caída del socialismo y la instalación de mecanismos propios del capitalismo neoliberal; en segundo lugar, analizar la institución bosnia del komšiluk -las buenas relaciones entre vecinos pertenecientes a comunidades etnoreligiosas distintas- y las perturbaciones que ha sufrido por efecto de la guerra.
El segundo eje, antitético pero especular al primero, tiene como campo de observación una montaña muy cercana a la ciudad, el monte Trebević, que encarna un poderoso conjunto de complejos que afectan hoy a la sociedad sarajevita y bosnia en general. Antaño el destino favorito de las excursiones de los ciudadanos de Sarajevo, en 1984 sede olímpica (con todo lo que esto supone en un nivel simbólico), en 1992 fue ocupado por las tropas serbio-bosnias que lo convirtieron en uno de los puntos más estratégicos para el asedio. La montaña, de ser uno de los símbolos de la ciudad, se ha convertido en un territorio maldito al que ya no sube casi nadie. En este sentido, el espacio del monte es interpretado como una suerte de subconsciente urbano, allá donde quedan escondidos los traumas de ayer y los problemas de hoy, mientras que más abajo, en el valle de la ciudad, el nuevo capitalismo rampante, en su intento de asentarse establemente en Bosnia Herzegovina, se apodera del paisaje urbano y lo convierte en un escenario para el desfile de su poder y sus expectativas de cara al futuro inmediato.
El título de la tesis hace referencia al trastorno por estrés post-traumático (TEPT), del que se calcula que hasta un 60% de la población de Sarajevo ha mostrado síntomas. Aquí, el TEPT es de entenderse como una metáfora que describe el presente de la ciudad. En años recientes, la reconstrucción post-bélica y el crecimiento urbano, empujados por los nuevos agentes capitalistas, se dan como en un estado de excitación (rápidos, sin planificación, saltándose las leyes), como si semejante frenesí fuera una manera de dejar atrás el evento traumático y librarse de los fantasmas del pasado. Estos, sin embargo, precisamente porque el trauma no ha sido reelaborado del todo, vuelven en forma de –o son somatizados en- los lugares “malditos” de la ciudad, congelados en el tiempo como si la guerra acabara de terminar: un flashbacks constante de la tragedia para todos aquellos –la mayoría de la población- que no se atreven a frecuentarlos y hacen como si no existieran, cuando los tienen siempre ante sus ojos. / RESUME OF THE THESIS “POST-TRAUMATIC CITY. MARIJIN DVOR AND MOUNT TREBEVIĆ, TWO URBAN SPACES IN TRANSITION IN SARAJEVO”
The main aim of this work has been to investigate transformations happened in the city of Sarajevo after the 1992-95 conflict. Particularly, I focused on how recent changes in the macro-level (the double transition: post-socialist and post-war), on the one hand, are reflected in the external form of the city (therefore its physical modifications, new urban projects) and, on the other, how they affect its social fabric, specially traditional relations between neighbours belonging to different ethno-religious communities, and the mental maps of its inhabitants.
The title of this study comes from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): recent studies calculated that up to 60% of Sarajevo population has shown symptoms of this disease. Here, PTSD is to be understood as a metaphor which describes the present of the city, and also helps to better understand the relation between such different spaces, as the central district of Marijin Dvor and wild Mount Trebević, that constitute our observation fields. In recent years, post-war reconstruction and urban growth, boosted by new capitalist agents, were happening in a sort of frenzied state of excitement (quickly, without any planning, breaking or conveniently manipulating the existing rules, as it can be seen in Marijin Dvor, "Sarajevo's new financial and commercial quarter"), as if such acceleration was a way to leave the traumatic event behind, to get rid of the phantoms of the past. These, nonetheless, precisely because the trauma has not been fully reworked, come back in form of –or are somatized in the “damned” places of the city, frozen in time as if war just ended: Mount Trebević is one of them, the place for the hidden, the forgotten and the painful, a constant flashback of the tragedy for all those -the majority of population- who don’t dare to frequent them anymore and pretend not to see them when they’re always in front of their eyes.

Since the 1950s modernization theory predicted within the Third World a trajectory for social evolution and development mirroring perceived
social and developmental evolution in Western societies since the 17th
Century. Despite this theory being much discredited in both Western
societies and the developing world; this theory still forms the basis for
much analysis and policy formulation within post-1990 South Africa. This
thesis looks at various aspects of urban black South Africans' existence
and concludes that African tradition has found a place within an urban
existence due to it's flexibility in dealing with peoples' daily challenges.
An urban existence can thus no-longer be thought of as supplanting
tradition in favour of western influences, but rather as bringing about a
mixture of western and traditional influences - with positive and negative

Depuis le milieu des années quatre-vingts-dix, Bruxelles comme enjeu d’actions collectives, apparaît sous des formes inédites. Ce sont des lieux dés-affectés, des friches ou des lieux discontinus qui font, avant la constitution d’un quelconque programme politique, l’objet de mises en scène artistiques ou culturelles. Depuis celles-ci se nouent des alliances plutôt que des fédérations représentatives, se produisent des groupes et émergent des énoncés, bref se tisse un milieu culturel d’intervention urbaine au contact des hésitations d’autres milieux urbains plus institutionnalisés. Une Bruxelles rugueuse et fissurée tant d’un point de vue physique, social qu’institutionnel et politique y devient ressource de sens et d’action contre une ville dès lors qualifiée de lisse. Ces constructions de possibles s’appuient sur des figures d’Usager, de Créativité voire de Métropole, et se distancie ainsi d’une ville héritée des premières luttes urbaines, que des urbanistes-artisans auraient à rapiécer autour des Quartiers et des Besoins d’Habitants.<p>Cette thèse propose une description de l’émergence, de la constitution, des modes de stabilisation, de rigidification, de fermeture et de solidification de ce milieu à partir des situations hétérocilites qui le font autant diverger que tenir. Ces situations sont autant des actions culturelles, des actions de dénonciation, des plate-formes émergentes visant à peser sur le développement urbain, que des projets urbanistiques et architecturaux. Elle décrit les capacités dont se dotent des collectifs – parfois qualifiés d'alternatifs – à mettre la ville en problèmes ainsi que les effets de la capture de ces expériences sur la production de nouveaux dispositifs publics d'action urbaine. <p>C’est alors qu’est interrogée la constitution, à partir de nouvelles zones d’interventions publiques à Bruxelles, d’un nouveau pli institutionnel au sein de couches préexistantes héritières des premières luttes urbaines. Ce pli s’appuie sur une requalification des rapports entre créativité, attractivité urbaine, participation et action politique. Architectes et urbanistes jouent alors un rôle central dans la constitution d’un urbanisme par projet qui suppose à la fois une planification plus procédurale sensible à la spécificité des nouveaux pôles de développement et une nouvelle échelle de référence visant à situer Bruxelles comme métropole internationale. <p>Le milieu décrit oscille – et parfois se fragmente – entre des expérimentations de villes des possibles et constitution d’une ville par projet. Entre les deux, ce sont les effets de ce milieu qui font enjeu. Les frictions urbaines, les formes de créativité, les usagers, les interstices que ces deux acceptions partagent peuvent constituer de nouveaux mots d’ordre, des présupposés destinés à être digérés dans de nouvelles généralisations utopiques – une ville créative à appliquer sur des espaces pour des publics cibles à éduquer – ou alors devenir l’occasion de cultures interstitielles favorisant des reprises usagères de co-constructions de localités. In der hier vorliegenden Promotionsschrift wird ein von der Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie inspirierter ethnographischer Forschungsansatz angewandt, um, ausgehend von dem Setting des Studiokurses an einer spanischen Architekturschule, aufzuzeigen, wie Architekt:innen die disziplinären Logiken der Architekturausbildung und in weiterer Instanz die Schnittstelle zwischen Ausbildung und professioneller Praxis problematisieren und aus der Disziplin selbst heraus neu verhandeln. Hierbei wird beschrieben, (1) wie die Einheit von Architekturausbildung und der Bauwelt/Baupraxis aufgebrochen wird, (2) wie der Begriff des Grundproblems in der architektonischen Gestaltung selbst problematisiert wird und, (3) wie in der architektonischen Produktion, (lokale) sozio-politische Themen, die agency von nicht-menschlichen Akteur:innen und die ethische Verantwortlichkeit von Architekt:innen für die gebaute Umwelt, neue Relevanz gewinnen.
Basierend auf einer ethnographischen Feldforschung (zwischen 2017-2019), wird in dieser Dissertation eine neue Konzeptualisierung von Architektur vorgestellt: die ‚Architektur als theoretische Praxis‘. Diese eröffnet neben der ‚Architektur als Form‘ und der ‚Architektur als Entwurfspraxis‘ eine weitere Betrachtungsebene von Architektur, welche es ermöglicht die architektonische Produktion jenseits des Entwurfs von Gebäuden und Bauelementen zu untersuchen und aufzuzeigen, wie Architekt:innen in Gestaltungsprozessen Konzepte und Diskurse selbst bauen und so als Teil ihrer sozio-materiellen Praktiken umsetzen. Dadurch werden Parallelen zwischen der Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie und der ‚Architektur als theoretische Praxis‘ diskutiert und aufgezeigt, wie beide als (unterschiedliche) Formen einer „Anti-Theorie“ definiert werden können. / This dissertation explores from an actor-network theory inspired ethnographic research approach how architects do, challenge and problematize the disciplinary logics of architectural education and, in a further instance, the intersection between architectural training and the professional practice. Taking the studio courses at a Spanish architecture school as starting point, this ethnographic case study describes (1) how the unity of architectural education and building practices is suspended, (2) how the concept of the fundamental problem in architecture is problematized by architectural design practices, and (3) how (local) socio-political issues, the agency of non-humans and the ethical accountability of architects for the built environment gain new relevance in architectural production.
Based in ethnography research (between 2017-2019), this dissertation presents a new conceptualization of architecture: the ‘architecture as theoretical practice’. In comparison to an ‘architecture as form’ and an ‘architecture as design practice’, this new conceptualization opens up the possibility to examine architectural production beyond the design and construction of buildings and reveals how architects build or materialize concepts and discourse as part of their socio-material practices. Consequently, parallels between actor-network theory and 'architecture as theoretical practice' are discussed by showing how both of them can be defined as (different) forms of ‘anti-theory’.

The library as place : a study of the experiences and perceptions of community libraries users in the Moretele Local MunicipalitySepeng, Itumeleng 02 1900 (has links)
Bibliography: leaves 97-104 / In this dissertation I examine the public's use of two community libraries in the Moretele local municipality. My research focused on who uses the libraries, for what purpose the libraries are being used, and patrons’ perceptions of the libraries. Data was collected using three methods namely interviews, observations in the form of seating sweeps and written patron surveys. The data collected show that the libraries play an important role in the information and social needs of the communities. They are highly valued for the resources they provide such as study space, books and photocopiers. The libraries are also greatly utilised by local communities, especially UNISA students, and function as public and third places. As public spaces they offer the community a space to meet, work together and discuss issues that are of importance to the community. As third places, the libraries offer ideal places for people, especially the youth, to play and socialise.
