Análise de imagens de alguns livros didáticos de italiano como língua estrangeira / Analysis of images from some Italian textbooks as a foreign language

Alves, Danielle Fernandes 22 September 2011 (has links)
The image is a resource frequently used by foreign language teachers. May be in an illustration, a picture or a film, these elements work like a link between the foreign language and the student, because they establish a connection with what he already knows (images are universal) and what he doesn´t know (foreign language), for he is being initialized in it. Kress and Van Leeuwen, creators of the visual design Grammar, affirm that images can disseminate speeches and ideologies, and that it´s why the individual must take a critical look at the visual language. It is in this sense that it emerges the need of techniques that help the image viewer to decode it. The visual literacy it one of those tools. The same way we use inferences, analogies and our world knowledge to interpret texts, the visual literacy is a reading resource that helps to interpret messages underlying to the images, decoding such images in all its aspects (social, cultural, economic). Taken that for granted, this research aims, from the visual literacy, to do a reading of some images present in textbooks in Italian language used in Italian on Campus of the University of São Paulo and in language courses open to the community (CLAC), in Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, in order to verify whether that images have ideological or stereotypical messages between its lines, checking, moreover, whether they were used in a coherent way to the teaching unit and whether they are contextualized with the dialog the text and the listening.

Investigações sobre a leitura através do cinema na universidade: o letramento crítico no ensino de inglês / Investigation of the reading of images by the university student: english teaching´s critical literacy

Ferraz, Daniel de Mello 18 September 2006 (has links)
The main objective of this study is to investigate the reading of images by the university student. This analysis took place in the English classes in two universities, a private and a public university of the state of São Paulo. The importance of the studies of reading of film imagens comes by their influence regarding social reality. We perceived that these studies could be inserted in education literacy studies, so to speak in an educational posture where interests are committed to social change, cultural diversity, economic equity and political enfranchisement (Luke & Freedbody 1997:1). Such literacy studies were initiated by Freirean theories. Freire is recognized as one of the founders of critical pedagogy. Similarly important were the studies on the philosophy of language which compounded the basis of this research. They also provided more comprehension for the analysis and interpretation of the data. Some theoreticians were fundamental provided that they contributed enourmously for the thoretical framework of this research: Derrida, Foucault, Bakhtin, Bourdieu, Giroux, Luke, Morin, among others. The first chapter consists in analysing the discourses of teachers and students regarding their comprehension of reading. Through the analysed discourses, we also debate their views of pedagogy and literacy. The second part analyzes the processes of rupture provided through students´ meaning making. The last chapter focuses on the reading of images by teachers and students through their representations of what reading images could be. For the investigation and analysis of events, an ethnographic research is applied which means that some of the premises of the ethnographic research are respected and some others are not utilized. The partial conclusions reveal that both universities 1. call for a re-evaluation of an education within new concepts such as literacies and critical pedagogy 2. that in both universities positivistic paradigms prevail when reading practices are concerned 3. students and teachers often tend to reproductivism (Bourdieu 1982) in a criticalreproductivism (Saviani 1990) 4. throughout the courses some other circumstances revealed that teachers and students searched for processes of rupture through meaning making

Ensino de bioquímica no curso de nutrição em uma instituição de ensino superior da rede particular: diagnósticos e intervenções / Teaching of Biochemistry in the Nutrition course in a Private Higher Education Institution: diagnostics and interventions

Scatigno, Andreza Costa 10 March 2011 (has links)
In recent years, it has been observed that life science students in both private and public universities have great difficulties in learning biochemistry. This problem is due mostly to the lack of abstract thought, required for understanding phenomena at the molecular level, accompanied by lack of basic chemistry knowledge. Therefore to improve the effectiveness of biochemistry teaching it is necessary to adopt measures that address the main students\' difficulties The analysis of biochemistry teaching in the Nutrition course of a private university is considered essential given that their student output is superior to public universities\'. Despite of this, academic research on the actual teaching & learning conditions in private universities is limited. The current research used the teaching of biochemistry to Nutrition students of a private university as a case study. Profiles of the institution and students were drawn and questionnaires and tests carried out to investigate the main difficulties faced by students. We concluded that students have great difficulty in understanding symbolic representations, have problems in understanding new vocabulary and interpreting texts and graphs. Therefore, students were subjected to exercises aimed at developing the understanding of symbolic representations and text and graphics interpretation, with the meaning of each new word explained. Chemistry concepts were discussed as required. Assessments were held in small groups, to provide students the opportunity to actively discuss the issues being presented. To evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions the students were subjected to the same tests used to evaluate their difficulties . The visual literacy test showed considerable improvements in graphs interpretation and new vocabulary. A comparison of before and after evaluation sheets pointed that students were more satisfied with the learning experience following the interventions. Therefore we conclude that it was possible to significantly improve biochemistry learning, paramount to a Nutritionist\'s training

Fiegenbaum, Maicon January 2017 (has links)
Postage stamp: an artifact with a double communicational role. On the one hand, it communicates legitimizing the circulation of correspondence. On the other hand, it communicates through its imagery-verbal elements. In spite of the undeniable attractions that modern media offer to young people, one can not fail to notice that these little notables can be used in the teaching of Geography. The search will answer the following question: the postage stamps have the potential to be used as alternative and enriching teaching material to the teaching of Geography, and how would the use of postage stamps in the classroom allow the construction of geographical knowledge? The text references the historicity of the postage stamp, establishing the relationship of this historicity with contextual interpretation of geographical space. It addresses the postal stamp as a methodological possibility for the construction of knowledge in the classroom, articulated from six structuring concepts that will be discussed theoretically based on authors of the teaching and teaching of Geography, in order to clarify to the reader the intersections of this tool - the Postage stamp - with the pedagogical practice in Geography. The various images that extrapolate from this communicational technique allow the teacher to use it to awaken the enchantment by studying the landscape. The text recognizes not only the relationship of communication with temporality but also the relation of this communicational element to the teaching of Geography. The work aims to enable the construction of basic skills and competences for the reading of images, based on the elaboration of pedagogical proposals that articulate the use of the postage stamp and insert it in the context of pedagogical practices in classes of the 6th grade of Elementary School.

Changing mindsets: A study of Queensland primary teachers and the visual literacy initiative

McDougall, Jenny Kay, j.mcdougall@cqu.edu.au January 2004 (has links)
'Changing mindsets' is about how teachers are engaging with ‘visual literacy’ — the practices involved in understanding and creating visual texts. The concept of ‘visual literacy’, like other ‘new’ literacies, has arisen in response to changing communication practices in developed, capitalist societies like Australia. This study addresses the ways in which teachers in primary schools are engaging with the visual literacy initiative in the context of the new arts syllabus (Years 1-10) in Queensland. Using a broadly poststructural approach, this thesis explored the changing mindsets implied by this curriculum initiative from three perspectives. The concept of ‘preservation of self’ (Nias, 1987, 1993) was used to examine the personal dimension of change; the concept of ‘trendy theory’ (Goodson, 1988, 1994, 1997) addressed the social and political agendas that drive curriculum reform; while the concept of ‘multimodality’ (Kress, 2000a, 2000b, 2003a, 2003b) drew attention to the cultural values ascribed to different modes of communication. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 26 primary teachers from 11 government schools in a regional centre in 2002. The discourse analysis method was used to analyse the data resulting from these interviews. The data showed that the official discourses featured in the new arts syllabus did not match the discourses used by practising teachers. Although there was some recognition of the significance of the visual mode, most teachers in this study were not aware of ‘visual literacy’. Significantly, the agency exercised by teachers in curriculum reform was shaped not only by their personal identities, but also by the levels of support that they experienced in their working environments. These findings have crucial implications for policy-makers in implementing curriculum change, particularly in the context of the new arts syllabus.

Changing the Traditional High School Photography Curriculum: Integrating Traditional and Digital Technologies

Cooper, Julie A 30 November 2010 (has links)
This thesis presents a photography curriculum for a beginning high school level photography class. It is designed as a teaching guide to structure a photography class that incorporates both film photography and digital photographic technology. One of the biggest challenges for teachers of photography is how to structure a curriculum with a limited number of enlargers and space in the darkroom, while incorporating digital technology with limited computer access for students. The curriculum presented here includes three major parts: a traditional photographic film component, a digital photography component, and a concepts component where students will experiment with different photographic techniques of manipulation as well as tackle photographic history, criticism, and visual literacy.

Use of integrated technology for teaching multicultural concepts for children in second grade

Bruning, Merribeth J. January 1993 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to determine if instruction with or without the use of integrated technology made a significant difference in the mean scores of second grade children in a unit of instruction concerning multicultural education and if there were any gender bias. The unit for Multicultural Education was created by the researcher. The researcher designed the Multicultural Cognition Assessment I (pretest), Multicultural Cognition Assessment II (posttest), and Child Preference Inventory instruments. The school corporation chosen as the site for the research had two elementary schools in neighboring towns with two sections of second grade each. Each school had a racially homogeneous population (Caucasian) and similar technology available. One class from each school received lessons with technology, and one class was taught without technology. There were 90 students in the study with complete data available for 78 students. After an initial observation, the researcher conducted the study on Wednesdays for six subsequent visits.ResultsA repeated measures analysis with one within-subject factor (pretest, posttest) and two between-subjects factors method (showing the difference between the use of technology and without technology and gender) was used to test Hypothesis I and II. Hypothesis I concerned the method of instruction and resulted in p = .445>.05. Hypothesis II concerned the effect of gender and resulted in p = .075>.05. No significant differences were found. Both hypotheses were accepted. There was no interaction effect between method and gender. There was a significant difference between the overall mean scores in the Pretest and Posttest analysis at p = .007<.05. A one sample t test was applied to determine if the mean of the overall preference was zero on the Child Preference Inventory. The result of the one-tailed t test resulted in t value of 13.32 with p = 0.000, indicating a positive response toward technology. / Department of Elementary Education
