Latitudinaria latitude in thought or conduct

Landolt, Sandra, Art, College of Fine Arts, UNSW January 2007 (has links)
Latitudinaria* explores and critiques the ambivalence between current technological progress and the consequently depersonalised social structures and systems. I am using the development from mechanical Automata to mass production juxtaposed to Charlie Chaplin??s film and Jean Tinguelys kinetic art, as examples for the change of the social condition from the industrialisation to the current post-industrial era. The change of social condition I refer to as the ??depersonalisation?? or ??dehumanisation?? effect supported by my working experiences in the health system. The ??medicalisation of the life span?? and the discrepancy of creating a sustainable future less profit orientated are two indicators of how far we have been removed from our bodies. These observations are supported by the writing of Ivan Illich??s Medical Nemesis and Frank Schirrmachers?? analysis of the change of the social structure using the family configuration as an example. These conceptual ideas are visualised by a selection of kinetic art works and video installations. In the heart of this body of work is the process-orientated documentation of Zero AGL project. The project documents the journey of a discarded airplane that was re-assembled and reanimated by myself and a group of volunteers supported by local businesses. The struggle of the group of people stands as a metaphor for the current dilemma of the restricted usage of public space. Further it reflects on my own limitations dealing with the Australian outback culture and the transition of my own sculptural practice from small scale art works into the arena of life size public Art. Those experiences shaped the process and the direction of the project. The motivation for the creation of the body of kinetic sculptures and video installation is to highlight the absurdity of social constructed categories and controlling systems in a post-industrial society. The subject matter focuses on the social construction of the categories of the ??Norm?? and the limitations of failure. Latitudinaria gives the audience a lateral view on how human betterment is not always essentially connected to technological progress but on transforming ideas and enhancing it from a different point of view. * freedom from normal restraints, limitations and regulations.

Within words, without words

Hartigan, Patrick, Art, College of Fine Arts, UNSW January 2007 (has links)
This paper centres in and around words. I have incorporated words into my recent work in a variety of ways including drawing, Letraset, sound and fiction writing. The philosophical questions which arise through any use of language and the various ways of adopting these questions and words within a 'visual art' context is considered in a number of ways. These include The Voyager Interstellar Space Mission which was humankind's first attempt to communicate with other hypothesized populations, conceptual word-incorporating artists, writers of fiction and philosophers within whose work can readily be found an extreme vigilance towards language. Alongside this word exploration I will consider other processes through which I've made and continue to make, works of art. These processes include drawing and film/video. My drawings (which sometimes include words) will be addressed in terms of a crossover between the drawn line and words found in Raymond Carver's story Cathedral. This story made me think about what it means to 'be led' by somebody and how I'm led (by myself or perhaps those mysterious 'populations' the Voyager team of thinkers had in mind) when drawing. It also marks an interesting point in my discussion of a state of being 'without words.' In addition to words an important focus in this paper are the windows through which I've spent a lot of 'my life' looking at 'life pass by' (which are in many ways a physical reality corresponding to the metaphorical 'frame of language'). The time I've spent looking out windows over the past few years has resulted in. several film and video pieces in addition to my latest work (presented as the appendix of this paper) which comprises of a series of short stories. The paper opens with a quote by German philosopher Martin Heidegger: "Language is the house of Being. In its home man dwells." The enigmatic broadness of this statement is appropriate to the apprehensive and cautious attitude towards words found throughout the paper (also it mentions 'house' which immediately brings to my mind 'windows')

Pele como tinta: o corpo entre gesto e vinco / Skin as ink: the body between gesture and crease

Mariana Katona Leal 25 March 2011 (has links)
Em Peles a estrutura do vinco é requisitada para compor os afetos e as construções que norteiam a escrita do e no corpo / Skin as ink: the body between crease and gesture discusses the gesture as a purposeless means within the concept of the artistic process, given the relationship of artistic practice involving video and intervention experiments carried out during the author's Masters course in Contemporary Art in works such as Auto-retrato, Tarja,Peles institucionais e Onde fica o Galpão? Among the gestures discussed here is the deterritorializing gesture in which the educationall institution is evoked as a space whose borders are treated as a way of thinking about the artistic process as well as the institution as a concept. Furthermore, the other work proposed here correlates video and frame in dynamic temporal textures. The ink gesture recorded on video is conditioned to a return of the fixed painting on the screen. In Skins, the structure of the crease is required to compose the affects and constructions that guide the writing on and of the body

Facing the World: The Unapparent Merits of Makeup

McCann, Ishbel A 01 January 2018 (has links)
The act of applying makeup is a ritual shared by many, often beginning at an early age. Though makeup is presented as a final product in the public sphere, the process of applying makeup can be just as, if not more important. This thesis acts as the theoretical basis for my digital art project, Facing the World. My work gives insight into the lesser understood motivations behind wearing makeup while shedding the stigma that wearing it is merely a superficial act or sign of vanity. The project Facing the World presents the makeup routines and personal narratives of seven women to uncover the merits of cosmetics as a means of identity creation, self-care, and mindful reflection. The work is exhibited as a single channel looped video of approximately twenty minutes with the corresponding subject’s audio portion played over headphones.

Abstract: Vital lily bud born in the inmost entrails of the imaginal and body elements, after long period of dormancy and good fight. Arduous and joyful testimony of an artistic - and spiritual life - creative process undertaken, resulting in the short film on video Natura fulgens, as part of the fruits, after intense dedication and cultivation of the psychic landscapes, here performed via Active Imagination 1 and Contemplative Prayer 2. The Spiritual Canticle of St. John of the Cross and the loving qualities of the Blessed Virgin Mary as Stella Maris, Pulchra ut Luna and Domus Dei 3 have been invaluable sources of inspiration, guiding stars. Improvisation in dance, body awareness practices and free course poetic writing, which gathered the images emerged, were parts of the process. In the short film, the theme of the soul's journey in search of a return to the Divine Presence, true source of Living Water, works together with the assumption of the creative body, like domus 4 of the Heart of God in time. In the theoretical incursions, the theme of the cross and redemption - of the human look, of the produced images, of the imagination - precedes and illuminates the realization. The web of Instants Fertile of Meaning, poetic, divine, in image and sound, revealed to the pious eyes of soul-and-heart, formed the core of the research. / Mestrado / Mestre em Multimeios

Répétitions et art vidéo : réflexions à partir d’une pratique vidéo / Repetitions and video art : reflections based on video work

Dragoni, Annick 01 February 2013 (has links)
Starting with a reflection based on plastic arts, this thesis aims at studying the links between repetition and video art. Repetition, considered as a process, is double. First, it is a composition principle which produces several effects. Secondly, it is a motif capable of interrogating a series of perception shifts likely to question our current psychic work. The aim of the first part, devoted to sound and image in a continuous loop and to feedback processes, is to study how the many processes of repetition at work in video art can orchestrate our perception of temporal objects. The second part will focus on the way these processes of repetition operate when they take place in videos with a narrative dimension. The narratives’ circularity, the processes of doubling and reduplication, the back and forth movement between texts and images act as ritournelles which undo the characters and their stories’ unity to try and comprehend a subject whose profound nature is today indeterminate.

The work brings to light the life and work of the artist of Brazilian dance Maria Esther Stockler. In partnership with José de Paula Agrippino ¿ author and director of the influential tropicalism - they focused their innovative scenic production from 1967 to 1970. Subsequently, the focus of her research starts beingin creasingly driven towards anthropological experiments in different places where she lived and traveled to such as Africa, Arembepe-BA in Brazil, Peru and Bali. Maria Esther prints theseexperiences into the shapes of her body in motion and supported by the creative video device, both held one of the first experimental productions combining theater and dance in Brazil. Counterculture representatives, sought to build its own aesthetic, but deeply tuned to theaspects present in the Western avant-garde art. The work puts the artist in the historical and artistic context of the time, which even at the margins of production of the arts scene, especially the dancing and a theatrical performances in short periods of time, played a role of reference in the ways of producing of a generation of artists of that period. There by, the research follows the traces of a peculiar figure in the history of the Brazilian dance, it creates a dialogue with the history of modern dance, and also debates the issue of a multiple body of influences, cultures and customs, which driven by the libertarian spirit articulated a distinctive, authentic dance / Mestrado / Teatro, Dança e Performance / Mestra em Artes da Cena

Experimentální film a video 2. pol. 20. stol. v didaktických souvislostech / Experimental film and video in the second half of the 20th century in didactical context

Černá, Tereza January 2017 (has links)
Černá, T.: Experimental film and video in the second half of the 20th century in didactical context. [Master's thesis] Prague 2016 - Charles University, Faculty of Education, Department of Art Education, 95 p. (Attachments: art work of pupils and my own art work on DVD). This Master's thesis is a theoretical study in which I explore the connections between moving pictures - experimental film and video art - and the developments in fine art in the second half of the 20th century. In the thesis I look into the topic of moving pictures, their specific characteristics and the distinctions between them, and I define the basic concepts. Based on selected key figures who linked experimental film, video art and fine art, I describe the key approaches and principles that emerged in relation to this field, both in the Czech Republic and abroad. The teaching section presents three projects designed for and taught in art lessons, based on the work of some of the selected artists. The projects test the theoretical insights from the thesis through art lessons taught to schoolchildren aged 11 to 15. The thesis also comprises an art project, reflecting the insights obtained from the theoretical study, which became the platform for my own videos.

The Materials of Traditions

Jensen, Victoria 31 March 2022 (has links)
The homes we grow up in have a great impact on the homes we create as adults. Many of the traditions I saw in my childhood home were expressions of love within our family. These everyday traditions helped not only to build bonds within my nuclear family, but also with the chosen family I have formed as an adult. Repeating these traditions, or at least my best memory of them, has helped me in building my own home now. The ways I interact with my friends often reflects those same traditions I learned from home. I brought a few of these traditions to the gallery for my show, making the space an extension of my home and the traditions shared there.
