A Device-Level FPGA Simulator

In the realm of FPGAs, many tool vendors offer behaviorally-based simulators aimed at easing the complexity of large FPGA designs. At times, a behaviorally-modeled design does not work in hardware as expected or intended. VTsim, a Virtex-II device simulator, was designed to resolve this and many other design problems by providing a window into the FPGA fabric via a virtual device. VTsim is an event-driven device simulator modeled at the CLB level with multiple clock domain support. Utilizing JBits3 and ADB, VTsim enables simulation and examination of all resources within an FPGA via a virtual device. The only input required by VTsim is a bitstream, which can be generated from any tool suite. The simulator is part of the JHDLBits open-source project, and was designed for rapid response, low memory usage, and ease of interaction. / Master of Science

Improving Field-Programmable Gate Array Scaling Through Wire Emulation

Field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are excellent devices for high-performance computing, system-on-chip realization, and rapid system prototyping. While FPGAs offer flexibility and performance, they continue to lag behind application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) performance and power consumption. As manufacturing technology improves and IC feature size decreases, FPGAs may further lag behind ASICs due to interconnection scalability issues. To improve FPGA scalability, this thesis proposes an architectural enhancement to improve global communications in large FPGAs, where chip-length programmable interconnects are slow. It is expected that this architectural enhancement, based on wire emulation techniques, can reduce chip-length communication latency and routing congestion. A prototype wire emulation system that uses FPGA self-reconfiguration as a non-traditional means of intra-FPGA communication is implemented and verified on a Xilinx Virtex-II XC2V1000 FPGA. Wire emulation benefits and impact to FPGA architecture are examined with quantitative and qualitative analysis. / Master of Science

Parallel Genetic Algorithm Engine on an FPGA

The field of FPGA design is ever-growing due to costs being lower than that of ASICs, as well as the time and cost of development. Creating programs to run on them is equally important as developing the devices themselves. Utilizing the increase in performance over software, as well as the ease of reprogramming the device, has led to complex concepts and algorithms that would otherwise be very time-consuming when implemented on software. One such focus has been towards a search and optimization algorithm called the genetic algorithm. The proposed approach is to take an existing application of the genetic algorithm on an FPGA, developed by Fernando et al. [1], and create several instances of it to make a parallel genetic algorithm engine. The genetic algorithm cores are interfaced with a controller module that will control the flow of data between them to implement the parallel execution. Both coarse-grained and fine-grained parallelism are tested and results collected to find the best performance when compared to the single core design. Initial experimental results show some improvement over the number of generations required to reach the optimal fitness level, as well as more significant improvement for the number of generations needed for the average fitness to reach the optimal level.

This thesis studies processor architectures suitable for embedded processors. This includes Transport Triggered Architectures (TTA). TTA is programmed by specifying data transport; operations are triggered as a side effect of data transports. In traditional Operation Triggered Architectures (OTA) requested operations are determined by program. Data transports are handled internally by hardware so it's impossible to control and optimize data transfer by compiler. This approach brings an advantage of hardware and software aspects. The aim of this thesis is to design and implement a sample TTA processor in VHDL followed by realization in FPGA. This processor is designed in a generic manner, i.e. customized by set of generic parameters such as data width, number of buses, etc.

Design of an Open-Source Sata Core for Virtex-4 FPGAs

Many hard drives manufactured today use the Serial ATA (SATA) protocol to communicate with the host machine, typically a PC. SATA is a much faster and much more robust protocol than its predecessor, ATA (also referred to as Parallel ATA or IDE). Many hardware designs, including those using Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), have a need for a long-term storage solution, and a hard drive would be ideal. One such design is the high-speed Data Acquisition System (DAS) created for the NASA Surface Water and Ocean Topography mission. This system utilizes a Xilinx Virtex-4 FPGA. Although the DAS includes a SATA connector for interfacing with a disk, a SATA core is needed to implement the protocol for disk operations. In this work, an open-source SATA core for Virtex-4 FPGAs has been created. SATA cores for Virtex-5 and Virtex-6 devices were already available, but they are not compatible with the different serial transceivers in the Virtex-4. The core can interface with disks at SATA I or SATA II speeds, and has been shown working at rates up to 180MB/s. It has been successfully integrated into the hardware design of the DAS board so that radar samples can be stored on the disk.

Measuring Soft Error Sensitivity of FPGA Soft Processor Designs Using Fault Injection

Increasingly, soft processors are being considered for use within FPGA-based reliable computing systems. In an environment in which radiation is a concern, such as space, the logic and routing (configuration memory) of soft processors are sensitive to radiation effects, including single event upsets (SEUs). Thus, effective tools are needed to evaluate and estimate how sensitive the configuration memories of soft processors are in high-radiation environments. A high-speed FPGA fault injection system and methodology were created using the Xilinx Radiation Test Consortium's (XRTC's) Virtex-5 radiation test hardware to conduct exhaustive tests of the SEU sensitivity of a design within an FPGA's configuration memory. This tool was used to show that the sensitivity of the configuration memory of a soft processor depends on several variables, including its microarchitecture, its customizations and features, and the software instructions that are executed. The fault injection experiments described in this thesis were performed on five different soft processors, i.e., MicroBlaze, LEON3, Arm Cortex-M0 DesignStart, OpenRISC 1200, and PicoBlaze. Emphasis was placed on characterizing the sensitivity of the MicroBlaze soft processor and the dependence of the sensitivity on various modifications. Seven benchmarks were executed through the various experiments and used to determine the SEU sensitivity of the soft processor's configuration memory to the instructions that were executed. In this thesis, a wide variety of soft processor fault injection results are presented to show the differences in sensitivity between multiple soft processors and the software they run.

Quadrature modulator (demodulator) is used in transmitting (receiving) part of many devices. Unwanted imbalance can influence amplitude, phase or DC offset of modulator (demodulator). Correction of imbalance was a main subject of thesis. Simulations of these methods were created in MATLAB and results were compared. Basics of methods were implement on programmable logic field by program Xilinx ISE. Development kit V2MB1000 with analogue board Memec P160 was chosen for this purpose. In the last part were compare simulation results with practical measurement.

Hardware bidirectional real time motion estimator on a Xilinx Virtex II Pro FPGA

<p>This thesis describes the implementation of a real-time, full search, 16x16 bidirectional motion estimation at 24 frames per second with the record performance of 155 Gop/s (1538 ops/pixel) at a high clock rate of 125 MHz. The core of bidirectional motion estimation uses close to 100% FPGA resources with 7 Gbit/s bandwidth to external memory. The architecture allows extremely controlled, macro level floor-planning with parameterized block size, image size, placement coordinates and data words length. The FPGA chip is part of the board that was developed at the Institute of Computer & Communication Networking Engineering, Technical University Braunschweig Germany, in collaboration with Grass Valley Germany in the FlexFilm research project. The goal of the project was to develop hardware and programming methodologies for real-time digital film image processing. Motion estimation core uses FlexWAFE reconfigurable architecture where FPGAs are configured using macro components that consist of weakly programmable address generation units and data stream processing units. Bidirectional motion estimation uses two cores of motion estimation engine (MeEngine) forming main data processing unit for backward and forward motion vectors. The building block of the core of motion estimation is an RPM-macro which represents one processing element and performs 10-bit difference, a comparison, and 19-bit accumulation on the input pixel streams. In order to maximize the throughput between elements, the processing element is replicated and precisely placed side-by-side by using four hierarchal levels, where each level is a very compact entity with its own local control and placement methodology. The achieved speed was further improved by regularly inserting pipeline stages in the processing chain.</p>
