Nothing serious? Candidates' use of humour in management training

Grugulis, C. Irena January 2002 (has links)
Yes / This article explores the use made of humour in three different private sector organisations. It draws on observations of managers working towards a management qualification and, from the jokes they exchange, it argues that studying humour may offer insights into sentiments not easily articulated in `serious¿ conversation. Humour¿s ambiguity enables contentious statements to be made without fear of recrimination. Equally, constructing jokes by juxtaposing two different frames of reference provides a glimpse of alternative (and shared) perceptions of `reality¿. This sensitivity to complexity makes humour a particularly appropriate vehicle for conveying ambitions, subversions, triumphs and failures and this article considers some of the `serious¿ messages underlying the jokes.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Ana Paula Barbosa.pdf: 1171389 bytes, checksum: 01ce85e1c34627b7ef1efa98225d692e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-08-27 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / This research had the objective of recognizing the meanings of the Educational Employees of the public basic school, formed at the Instituto Federal de São Paulo, Campus São Paulo, regarding the education process in the Technical course of the School Secretary of the Profuncionário. The individuals for the first phase of the research were the 2014 class students and for the second phase two students chosen from this group. The procedures to produce information were: questionnaires sent to the class students and interviews with two students chosen based on the answers to the questionnaire, which were recorded and transcribed. The two participants were chosen considering the diversity between the responses, as one agreed with most of the statements while the other participant opposed them. The research is anchored on the assumptions of Socio-Historical Psychology, based on the theory of Vigotski, his followers and other contemporary authors. The data analysis was performed using the procedure called Nucleus of Meanings (AGUIAR; OZELLA, 2006, 2013; AGUIAR et al., 2015). The analysis reveals the need for initial and continuing education for the Educational employee; confirms the relevance of public policies for valuing this employee, such as education, minimum wage and career plan; infers, for the real recognition of the employee as an educator, the need for the educational employee to recognize himself as an educator, as well as the school community and society; indicates the course under analysis provided the understanding and respect for diversity, therefore improving the quality of the relationships. However, it points out the need for attention to affectivity in the planning and development of teaching-learning processes, especially in distance learning courses and to a better articulation between theory and practice, developing the praxis, in that it allows the reflection about practice / Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo apreender as significações de funcionários da educação da escola básica pública formados no Instituto Federal de São Paulo, câmpus São Paulo, sobre o processo de formação no curso técnico de Secretaria Escolar do Profuncionário.

: A comparative survey of opinions about Från ord till handling – på väg mot en nationell bibli- oteksstrategi [From Words to Action- towards a national library strategy]

Eriksen, Veronika January 2019 (has links)
In this two year master’s thesis, I examine the views of library and information science (LIS) students at Uppsala University and The Swedish School of Library and Information Science at the University of Borås. As a method for collecting their thoughts on the matter I chose to create a Webb-based survey. By having them answer a 35-question survey I gathered their opinions on the new Swedish library strategy. As a part of the process of writing the new national library strategy the authors have asked the concerned parties to give their opinions on the first draft of the strategy Från ord till handling – på väg mot en nationell biblioteksstrategi [From Words to Action- towards a national library strategy]. In addition to the survey taken by the students I have compiled and analyzed the 82 views sent to the National Library of Sweden by the library community. This master’s thesis has been done to examine if the university students of library and information science is of the same opinion as the rest of the profession concerning topics such as education, children’s learning and minority languages. The results are presented in figures and quotes and then discussed with the help of a theory of professions. By applying this theory it becomes clear that the students of LIS are introduced to the views and norms of the profession early on during their education.

QCF qualifications as a catalyst for learning and performance : an investigation into the link between vocational qualifications and skills

Tuckwood, Debbie Ann January 2012 (has links)
During the 2000s, the former UK Government introduced the Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) in an attempt to increase the relevance of qualifications and the qualification level of the UK labour force (HMSO 2006). However views about the value of the QCF and qualifications generally are contested. Through longitudinal case study research, the thesis finds a vocational purpose for qualifications that supports a culture of continuous improvement. This results in models that contribute to thinking about vocational learning and the role of qualifications, and provide a conceptional bridge between paradigms of workplace learning and concepts of organisational excellence. The thesis explores common understanding of learning and skills to explain issues relating to National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) and the QCF. In particular the thesis identifies significant implementation problems for the QCF due to differing ontological and epistemological understanding of the meaning of skills and their measurement, and requirements for different delivery and assessment models. In addition, the study identifies that rapidly changing organisational arrangements and regulation hinder the establishment of a more diverse and inclusive QCF. The thesis concludes that the QCF best fits Hager’s (2002) concept of learning that encompasses learning of many different kinds. Also the QCF is valuable as a flexible framework that establishes a degree of order in complex, rapidly changing learning environments. However the qualifications require broadly specified assessment criteria, and links to external communities of practice and associated learning packages.

Investigating the viability of a national accreditation system for Australian piano teachers

Gwatkin, Jan January 2009 (has links)
The Federal education system has 12 nationally accredited and portable qualifications issued by the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) which cover three sectors; Higher Education, Vocational Education and Training (VET) and Schools. A mandatory minimum bachelor qualification together with education units, state registration and ongoing professional development is imposed for all classroom music teachers. In direct contrast, however, Australian studio piano teachers and school instrumental teachers may or may not have formal qualifications, registration with professional associations, or ongoing professional development. All teachers must be registered with State registration boards for Working With Children (WWC) but no monitoring controls exist for studio teachers. Qualifications are available from public examination boards, private enterprises and state Music Teacher Associations (MTAs) but these are not recognised within the national system and consequently have no status or portability, although they are used and recommended within the industry and higher education institutions as course prerequisites. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether a National Accreditation System (NAS) for Australian studio piano teachers could be a viable system, adding unprecedented professionalism to the field and drawing upon the existing systems of government, private industry and educational institutions. In the thesis, current systems of accreditation, education and training available for classroom music teachers, school instrumental music teachers and other recognised professions such as lawyers, engineers, accountants, health professionals and sports coaches were reviewed as a comparative basis upon which to assess similar contexts for studio piano teachers. Results are combined with a survey of Australian piano teachers' perceptions, from which the study ascertained the extent to which studio piano teachers' needs were being catered for and met in available systems of accreditation and training.

Dahlström, Peter January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to get an insight into what it is that hides behind the statement to have an eye for something and an aptitude for something. In this study i have been in contact with two male truck drivers who have a long experience from truck driving. In the study they told me what knowledge they see as needed to be seen as a competent and skilled truck driver. The knowledge that the truck drivers brings out is to have an eye and an aptitude for the profession. The study showed that truck drivers had a hard time putting into words what they mean by having an eye and an aptitude for the profession.   The results of the study showed that when it comes to having an eye and an aptitude for the profession that stems from Aristotle's concept of knowledge, techne seen as skill knowledge and phronesis seen as familiarity or intimate knowledge.Within skill knowledge fit to have an aptitude for something, you have the ability to perform an action. This ability develops with practice and experience, and it is not possible to predict how long an individual's ability can develop. Within familiarity knowledge fit to have an eye for something, you can see patterns or behaviors that can be interpreted.   But, you can´t have a look for something you have not experienced before. The knowledge is based upon what you have accumulated over time. The knowledge interacts with each other to different degrees depending on personal characteristics, and the specific situation they face.
