Adoption of AI in Digital Design : A qualitative study about the effects on the profession

Edberg, Emelie, Beck, Lea January 2020 (has links)
The development of new technology plays a major role in today's society and several different industries. While some technologies have more or less an impact upon the whole working sector, one of the more recent and controversial technologies is Artificial Intelligence (AI). In recent years, this technology has evolved continuously and is spreading across several different industries. As it is clear that AI is reshaping the workplace, it is relevant to examine how and to what extent it is affecting the digital design profession. Purpose The purpose of this study is to gain insight into the current state of adoption of AI within digital design, including graphic design and web design. Furthermore, to explore the effects of AI on the nature of the profession, from the perspectives of professionals in the industry. While focusing on the creative process and the development of digital products, it investigates how the industry is experiencing the effects of AI in daily tasks and workflows. Furthermore, it examines if the implementation of AI has lead to the development of new work processes, or if traditional tasks remain but are carried out with AI tools as assistance. Method The research method is qualitative. Through literature reviews and by carrying out interviews with relevant designers currently working in the industry, the appropriate data is collected and analyzed. The interviews focus on understanding the participant’s perspective on the topic, their experiences of AI and what effect it has on their work. Through the interviews, the study identifies to what extent AI is used in creative processes, and sheds light on the general feelings towards AI, including expectations and concerns. Conclusions The findings show that the overall awareness surrounding AI is rather divided. AI is already implemented in various design processes and software, whether the designer is aware of it or not. It can thus be concluded that AI has affected the nature of the digital design profession. However, the effects vary depending on the specific role and the related tasks. Most are interested in learning more about it but natural skepticism and lack of knowledge about the technology remain an obstacle for implementing more AI in companies.

Typografie web designu / Typography of web design

Uhlířová, Martina January 2016 (has links)
Typography is one of the most important elements of web design and marketing. Good typography makes web design more appealing, which is important for readers in evaluating titles and the quality of text. The aim of this thesis is to provide a characterization of good and bad typography. I will use this characterization to identify modern typographical trends in a digital background. In the theoretical part, I will describe the basic features of typography. In the practical part, I will distinguish appealing typography and visual smog, and find specific examples demonstrating typographical trends in web design.

Animations Effect on Reading Comprehension in Web-based User Interfaces / Animationers Påverkan på Användares Läsförståelse i Webbaserade Gränssnitt

Nordahl, Sanna January 2016 (has links)
When it comes to web-based user interfaces and web design, one of today’s trends is to use informative and storytelling animations. They can be used as tools for communication, simplifying the interaction, or guiding the user’s attention. However, those animations used in a web- based user interface can slow down the interaction and the user flow and become a distraction for the user. Three popular informative and storytelling animations that are used in web design are: background video, animated slideshows, and parallax scrolling. In order to understand what effect these informative animations have on the users’ reading comprehension on websites — four prototypes were created in Adobe Muse. A user study in form of an A/ B testing followed by a questionnaire were conducted, showing that the three different animations affected the reading comprehension negative. While they at the same time also brought an entertaining feeling to the user experience (UX).

Define responsive design for web-forms using layout editor

Andersson, Robin, Hytönen, Jimmy January 2015 (has links)
There has recently been an emergence of new devices in which users can access the web. These devices have significantly smaller screen sizes than the more common desktop. This results in that the approach to designing web content has to be changed. The approach to design web content that adapts its visual layout to different screen sizes, is referred to as Responsive Web Design. Ida Infront is a company that develops systems and solutions for informationintensive businesses. They are currently examining how to design a layout editor that can be used to define responsive design for web-forms. The purpose of this project is to design and implement a prototype of such a layout editor, which will then be evaluated by Ida Infront. The project is divided into two phases, starting out with the research process, followed by the prototype design process. In the research process, the following is examined: structure of the XML file describing web-forms, Responsive Web Design techniques and technologies appropriate for the layout editor. In the prototype design process, a layout editor prototype allowing responsive design for web-form components, is designed and implemented. The responsive design configuration is added to the web-form XML file. We found that Bootstrap is a suitable technology to define responsive design of web-forms, since placement of web-form components can be translated into a Bootstrap grid system. The resulting layout editor prototype allows responsive configuration in Bootstrap. This is done by utilising the grid system as the underlying structure for placement of web-form components. The prototype also allows configuration for each of the four Bootstrap device classifications, named xs, sm, md and lg. Position and size of webform components are stored for each Bootstrap device classification. The resulting responsive configuration is added into the existing XML file for the web-form.

Designing digital instructions for setting up multi-device services

Lu, Yiwen January 2022 (has links)
Digital services are increasingly offered across multiple devices for a single user. A challenge for users is that multi-device services are more complex to use. While instructions are supposed to facilitate ease of use of the services, poorly designed instructions become obstacles themselves. This project explores considerations for designing digital instructions of setting up multi-device services. This is done through a user-centred approach by (1) understanding the user expectations and pain points when setting up a multi-device service, (2) designing solutions that align with user expectations and aid in overcoming pain points, and (3) a reflection of the design process and the resulting design solution. To conclude, a set of design recommendations are contributed for designers to arrive at intuitive instructions that facilitate users with setting up multi-device services.

Návrhové vzory pro webové aplikace / Design Patterns for Web Applications

Dudek, Jan January 2008 (has links)
With the coming of the web a brand new type of client-server applications based on standard web technologies has started to appear. These technologies are available on an overwhelming majority of client stations and don't need any additional software to be installed. As a result web applications have gained popularity among both users and developers and are currently deployed not only on the Internet, but also on company intranets. Considering present expansions of such applications it is important to summarize tested and approved approaches usable in their design. And it is this particular work that describes the chosen design patterns applicable in web applications development and demonstrates their usage on both concrete existent systems and a custom sample application.

Tillgänglighet för dyslektiker på svenska myndigheters hemsidor / Accessibility for dyslexics on Swedish authorities' websites

Hedeblom, Therese, Frisk, Rut January 2022 (has links)
Web accessibility is something that affects all public actors in society. In this research the focus is on dyslexic users and Swedish authorities and how they follow the guidelines according to WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines). Swedish authorities have an obligation to maintain good accessibility in conformity with the DOS law (Accessibility to Digital Public Service)(2018:1937). Having the diagnosis dyslexia means that the person has a disability linked to speech and writing, this is a common disability not only in the world but also in Sweden. In this study 20 Websites of Swedish Authorities have been checked against 8 of the guidelines in WCAG that are relevant for dyslexic individuals. It turned out that 50% of the authorities met all 8 guidelines and that 50% failed to meet one or more of these guidelines. There is a need for further work on maintaining good accessibility for the web, and further research to develop individual adaptations on the web for people with dyslexia. This can also provide conditions for increasing accessibility for all groups in society.

What about online store software solutions? : An evaluation study comparing the administrative side of two online store software solutions with criteria from web design, usability and online shopping.

Blomfeldt Olah, Paulina January 2022 (has links)
Online stores today need to be attractive to compete on the rapid growing market of online businesses. Standardized online store software solutions sold from IT companies to small businesses are also growing making it easier for anyone creating an online store. Less attention has been paid to how well these software solutions help the administrators to create a competitive online store regarding the administrator’s limited knowledge about usability and web design. This research intends to develop knowledge about how well two online store solutions perform from evaluation criteria within online shopping, usability and web design and how an online store solution for small businesses can benefit from a comparison with another online store solution sold to a larger range of businesses. The two products are evaluated and compared through Heuristic evaluations and A/B testing with 5 usability experience (UX) experts and analyzed with Trend analysis. The results show strengths in the solutions where they both were easy to learn, had easy access to help and good tools for creating loyal customers and weaknesses in inspiring, navigation and lack in mobile adaption. The findings suggest how the online store solution for small businesses can improve their statistics and design colors from the comparison of the larger product. A limitation in the study is that all evaluators come from the same team. For future work more cultural studies can be conducted for online stores in western countries, and user tests with administrators of online shops.

Accessibility Redesign and Its Effect on Purchase Intent and Customer Experience

Lindgren, Emmy January 2024 (has links)
Accessible web design is crucial for creating equal access to the internet for everyone. While numerous guidelines and standards exist to promote accessibility, it is often of low priority among professionals and unfortunately many websites remain inaccessible to people with disabilities. Accessible web design is often seen as a checkbox task, believed to decrease usability for people without disabilities, to result in less attractive designs, and be economically challenging to justify. Previous research has disproved some of these beliefs by demonstrating that accessible design enhances usability for all users. However, there remains a gap in research regarding the economic incentives associated with accessible design.  Therefore, this thesis aimed to investigate the impact of accessible web design on purchase intentions and customer experience. This was done by evaluating and redesigning an existing website for accessibility and subsequently conducting comparative testing between the two versions of the website.  The comparative testing consisted of A/B and user testing. Purchase intention was measured using statements derived from prior studies, alongside statements measuring concepts related to purchase intention. Furthermore, the customer experience was assessed using the After Scenario Questionnaire (ASQ), the System Usability Scale (SUS), and conducting user interviews.  The results show that accessible redesign positively influences purchase intentions and indicate that one possible primary contributor to this is an increase in information quality on the website. The customer experience showed no significant differences between the two versions, although user interviews revealed a small rise in user preference for the more accessible version.  In conclusion, this study shows that a redesign with a focus on accessibility increases user intentions to purchase while at the same time not decreasing the customer experience on the website. Hopefully, these results can contribute to creating a more accessible web for all users.
